I have NEVER left a negative review in my life but this experience was too ridiculous not to share. I met two friends who had already ordered drinks at the bar. After we were seated and ordered food random drinks and shots started showing up at our table. We politely explained they weren't ours and sent them back. This Happened twice. Then when my friend tried to order a drink, the trainee and another server told her she was "cut off." None of us were intoxicated and she had 1 drink that entire night. When questioned they explained "they were trained to identify impaired behavior"......that explanation was comical and ridiculous. I spoke with the manager expecting her to recognize what was clearly a mix-up, especially since drinks had been mistakenly delivered to our table multiple times and the server was new BUT Instead she doubled down on the servers' story. I also tried to explain to her who orders drinks and shots twice and then sends them back if thats what you ordered ????? To make matters worse, they won't cook a steak to your requested temperature because the chef decides how it should be prepared for you .......then they drop the bill and say "don't worry about signing anything" and they added an automatic gratuity to the bill even after all this ..... One of the most bizarre and poorly managed restaurant experiences I've ever had in my life and i eat out ALOT . they have more rules then items on the menu. This place is known for their wagyu Philly cheesesteak. It was very tender and good meat quality. The onions and big pepper went well with a kick with a quality all around the ingredients. The sesame roll has a texture that reminds me of a Chinese sesame ball which makes it extra chewy and not jaw breaking. The staff is really nice and make good cocktails. I had the a la Louisiane that had absinthe wash and it was strong, herbaceous and good. I paid 36$ after autograt and tax which is pricey. Wanted to try the famous bar-only wagyu Philly cheesesteak and it was phenomenal. We had the bar salad to start which was fresh and loaded with grated parm which is never a bad thing. But the sandwich came out piping hot, the sesame bread was so crispy but not rip the top of your mouth hard. The pepper is a bit spicy if you can't handle so I would recommend taking it out and cutting out all the seeds then adding back in if you need. We came here for lunch to get the cheesesteak at the bar and it was soooo yummy!!! Wasn't crowded at all & we didn't have to wait (there were 5 of us) which I was surprised about! The service was ok - it took a bit longer than expected but it was honestly so worth it for how amazing and life changing this cheesesteak was. The portion was big, meat was so so good and fresh, the peppers added a perfect kick and it was so warm and delish! I recommend getting with a side of chips too because those were nice and fresh as well! Since we sat at the bar it was a lot more of a casual vibe and since we were there for lunch, but I'd love to come and try their dinner as well. We went right for the Matu' dinner for 2, so we could try a bit of a few things since it's 5 courses. Never tried the garlic bread before but sounded good while we waited and it's that same delicious bread from the steak sandwiches so we were super happy. Course 1 - Bone broth which is tasty but feels like a throwaway to call it a 'course' but there was plenty of food coming Course 2 - Tartare was perfectly seasoned and the right portion as you really can only eat so much Course 3 - Thought he said short rib (menu says beef cheek) was amazing, as it was ridiculously tender. Perfect portion with a bit of red sauce on top of celeriac puree that we thought was polenta (so creamy and delicious) Course 4 - Filet with their '47' salad. Perfectly cooked wagyu with just the right/light amount of seasoning alongside a little salad similar to a light caeser Course 5 - We went ribeye (you can choose NY Strip) along with grilled broccolini Same as the filet, perfectly cooked and enough seasoning to let the flavor of the meat come through. My husband and I finally came to Matu Kai for their famous cheesesteaks and WOW. They did not disappoint!!! We both ordered one each. I also had an espresso martini (delicious!) and my husband ordered an old fashioned I believe. He seemed perfectly happy! The cheesesteaks are huge. I was so happy to bring half of mine home and have for lunch the next day - i heated it up in our toaster oven - and it was just as good. The chips it came with were also so tasty. The only downside was the lack of reservations for the bar (which is allegedly the only place you can order the cheesesteak). Ahh...so. First, I've been to the Beverly Hills Matu location and loved dinner there. Truly, five stars. Matu Kai, in Brentwood? I had high expectations, though I took a different route. It is technically first-come-first-serve, and so you have to order it before they run out for the evening. With that said, while it was a popular order I don't think they run out too quickly. It was good, yes, maybe delicious even, but calling it wagyu feels either like a stretch or a waste, and the price point feels appropriate to Brentwood but not to the food. Finally tried out the newest concept by the same restaurant group that founded Kazunori, Sugarfish, and Uovo, and it would be a mid-STEAK not to give it a try! Definitely recommend making a reservation to come here, especially with how busy the restaurant gets. If you arrive a bit earlier, they have a small indoor and outdoor lounge area where you can enjoy cocktails and wine before being seated. While we were waiting, we ordered the Cherry Blossom and Old Fashioned cocktails, which were made well and surprisingly strong. For our meal, we ordered their 24 hour bone broth, spiced tahini Caesar salad, short rib ragu (from Uovo), picanha and rustic ribeye. My favorite dish was definitely the short rib ragu, and while the steaks were good, as someone who prefer medium rare, I would recommend asking for the steaks to be cooked beyond their standard of warm and red in the middle (more like rare). Pacing of the food also needed a bit of work, since we spent quite a bit of time waiting for the next dish after we already finished the dishes served to us. I would expect to shell out a pretty penny for this experience, especially considering they have a mandatory 18% service fee (instead of taking tip/gratuity). I was also a bit disappointed that we were charged for our birthday dessert, since most places usually give that out for free, especially if you've already spent $400+ on a meal. Hadn't been to Matu since 2022, so when I saw that Matu Kai was opening in Brentwood with a larger space than the original Beverly Hills location, it was only a matter of time before I came here. Helped that the friend group agreed on Matu Kai as our annual holiday dinner venue! The one thing that I REALLY wanted to try was the Matu Philly Cheesesteak, but I was informed beforehand that it was only available at the bar during dinner hours. Well, I am then thankful that the Lock, Stock & Barrel menu ($115 pp) exists because it literally served the cheesesteak as "dessert." A rundown of everything on the menu below, with all beef as 100% grass-fed wagyu from First Light Farms in New Zealand: 1. 24-Hour Bone Broth: Always a good starter here. Very clean, not too salted. 2. Garlic Bread: Solid, had some nice toasted cheese on top. 3. Shrimp Cocktail (Kauai origin): I mean, it's really hard to mess up shrimp cocktail. The horseradish sauce had a kick! 4. Tenderloin Carpaccio: The only dish that I felt was underwhelming. Didn't have enough flavor, which is surprising given the high beef quality that they have to work with. 5. Steak Tartare, Japanese Accent: As usual, one of Matu's best dishes and easily the most photogenic. The wagyu quality really shines here. Absolutely fantastic dish. 6. Hand-Cut Fries (from HiHo), Beef Tallow, Parsley: Matu and HiHo Cheeseburger have the same owner, so it makes sense they'd import the fries here. These were actually some amazing fries! Perfectly crispy and the beef tallow adds a ton of flavor. 7. Maltagliati (from UOVO): Was bemused that there is even a pasta dish on this menu, but I guess if UOVO is part of the group why not? It was a very good pasta. 8. 8-Hour Braised Beef Cheek: Now we're getting into the good stuff! The only shame is that there wasn't more of this. Super tender and flavorful. Enjoyed the celericac puree it came with. 9. 7 oz Center Cut Filet: Matu's whole deal is that you trust them to cook the steak at their signature "warm red," which is a medium rare center. They know what they're doing. Great filet! 10. '47' Salad, Little Gem Lettuce: A break from all the meat! Really fresh lettuce, might have had more cheese than necessary. 11. Tenderloin Satay, "Crying Tiger" Sauce: I don't really have satay enough to comment on how it compares to real satay, but this was good enough. 12. Ribeye/NY Brochettes, Harissa Spice: Can't really go wrong with these skewers with the meat quality. Spice added a nice kick! 13. Ribeye: Can't come to Matu and not have their trademark ribeye. So so so damn good. That wagyu cooked in "warm red" really shines here. 14. Maitake Mushrooms, Thyme, Butter: Crispier than expected, but paired well with the ribeye. 15. Matu Philly Cheesesteak & Chips: The cheesesteak that we all wanted and ended up getting! This was as advertised. The wagyu beef mixed with the Cooper Sharp cheese was perfection! The artisanal sesame roll is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Philadelphia-style Long Hot pepper did get to me, that thing is really spicy! Honestly, this by itself is a worthy meal and a candidate for best cheesesteak in the city. Only thing is that it was a bit hard to enjoy because we were so stuffed by this point! 16. Arturo's Panna Cotta (Café Con Leche, Strawberry, Passion Fruit): Had three different kinds of panna cottas. The strawberry one was definitely the favorite, but café con leche and passion fruit were good as well. Service here is great. The starters came out pretty fast, but they slowed the pace down once the big ticket items starting coming out. Overall, very friendly and welcoming. There is absolutely zero dependable street parking here. Valet parking is right outside the restaurant and is $15. Ambience is what I hoped for. Very warm and cozy environment inside. Tables were spaced well. Not too loud at all. The bar area seamlessly fit in. Great work designing the space! Overall, Matu Kai delivers on every single mark. I visited Matu Kai for Valentine's Day and enjoyed the overall experience. We had a reservation made in advance and would recommend you do as well as they get very busy and there isn't a large seating area. The ambiance overall is nice however, they attempted to seat us in the back area which contained seats that were very close to one another. We immediately asked the host to seat us elsewhere which they were happy to do. I honestly prefer the Beverly Hills location for this reason; their layout and seating is a bit strange. Upon ordering our food and drinks, it took about an hour to get any of it. The overall speed of service was pretty slow, but it was Valentine's Day and they were booked and busy. That being said, our meal was great! We had ordered their garlic bread, beef tallow fries, pasta, ribeye, and passion fruit panna cotta. However, I love that they have the option to order the sandwich during lunch time thru Postmates for delivery or pick up! The sandwich itself is to die for. Have to say, I much enjoy this Matu more than the location in Beverly Hills. Has a reservation for 6pm on a Sunday but when we got there we decided we wanted to share the cheesesteak, among other things, so we decided to wait for a seat at the bar. To start, service was kind & they promptly seated us soon as a bar seat opened. The ambiance at this location is much better than BH. The bar is bigger & vibier and the whole space is just much nicer and feels like an elevated but not too pretentious steakhouse. We sat down and ordered our Matu usual, extra dirty martini w/ blue cheese olives. Excellent always. We scanned the menu and decided. We went with one of their steak meals that comes with bone broth, shrimp cocktail, meatballs & steak w/ salad. Cheesesteak to share, no long hot & the short rib ragu. The starters came out first, excellent Kauai shrimp cocktail w: extra horseradish (love that). The meatballs were so tender and just a great sauce. This was so good to pair with the garlic bread that came out with our pasta, which I think is a total sleeper in its own. You don't usually go to a steakhouse and order pasta but this was easily one of our favorite dishes. The steak came out and considering we had sorta ordered a lot, this was perfect to share. Great salad in the side too (I don't like their Caesar at the BH location). Lastly, cheesesteak came out. We were pretty full so we ate half & took the other half home, which I love. Makes for a great meal later, just wrap in foil and throw in the oven. Instead of dessert we got an espresso martini and wandered down to salt and straw for their Thanksgiving menu. Hubby and I celebrated our anniversary snd ordered the Matu Ribeye meal for two, garlic bread, baked potato and passion fruit panna cotta. Kinda wanted the phiilly cheese-take but glad we didn't as what we ordered was perfect. Pricing wasn't too bad for all the dishes we had. Dipped my garlic bread in the bone broth and it was good but there were too many sesame seeds on the bread. Filet was delicious and the ribeye was perfect! Cons: Jenny the hostess was kinda bitchy!!! Was not friendly or inviting. I requested a table for 4 and her response was not welcoming, unfortunately that stayed with me. I did see her at the bar and serving folks so maybe she had too many hats at the restaurant and had a bad night. But that shouldn't occur in an establishment like this. Last con: would be nice to have 2 halves of the baked potato as 1 was lonely looking. Get it they probably took the innards of the other half to top off but 1 didn't look right. I had been looking forward to Matu Kai for weeks! Let me start by saying the food was spectacular. Every single dish was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. The steaks are quite literally insane, thinly sliced bites of perfection. I was disappointed to see that there were not many vegan options. This makes it tough to go out with a large group that has various preferences. The most upsetting part of the night was the service. I expect places like Matu Kai to have exceptional service. This means a server that smiles and offers good recommendations and conversation. We didn't have that experience. Our waitress was dry and cold, and honestly just seemed like she hated her job and didn't want to be there. The place is also extremely dark. I love dim lighting, but this was too dark and simply not comfortable. My final complaint is the ridiculous rule that you cannot order the cheesesteak unless you sit at the bar. It really disadvantages the people that plan in advance, pay a ton of money for dinner, and are denied the only real thing Matu Kai is known for. I have tried having this cheesesteak on three different occasions and each time, I'm given some excuse as to why we can't order it. I love when restaurants create consistency. Anytime I'm at Beverly Hills, there's already people waiting in line and it can become chaotic. When I walked into Matu Kai, I immediately noticed the decor. It's so much more spacious and I absolutely love the color palette. I also appreciated not being stressed about whether I would make the bar spot since it's much bigger than BH. Now, the cheesesteak. It tasted equally amazing to the BH location. I expected the all-wagyu meal to be too much. I haven't even been craving red meat lately, but a friend chose the place so I didn't really think too hard. I also don't always prefer wagyu -- it can be overwhelmingly fatty. Since I didn't know what to expect, I wasn't even looking forward to it much...yet I left thoroughly convinced. Everything was done delicately. Thin slices, perfect textures, varied presentations and flavors. Refined, not overwhelming. This was wagyu done right. We got the largest menu (Lock Stock & Barrel), which includes their Philly cheesesteak as "dessert," then ordered actual dessert on top (best one was the strawberry panna cotta btw). I didn't even feel disgusting afterward, I felt refreshed somehow. Maybe it helped that dinner was early, and I arrived fasting lol. Highly recommend that too. Our group of 8 loves our super long dinners. I liked that they offer more selections than the original bev hills location, which is also smaller. Everything on the larger menu was a total delight, even the salad with its delicate dressing. The only thing I felt was underwhelming was the carpaccio, which was probably underseasoned. The maitake mushrooms were a bit salty, but it kinda balanced nicely eaten w/ the ribeye. The food here is phenomenal! The cheesesteak is really where it's at, served at lunch and during the first hour of dinner. You simply can't go wrong with anything on their menu, I suggest coming with a group of people and ordering one of their preset menus for four or more. The quality of their meat sets them apart from anywhere else, everything is so tender and perfectly executed. Fancy Brentwood restaurant nestled into LOEWs hotel. Open during lunch at Bar seating only. Friendly staff! Nice decor! I visited Matū Kai primarily because it was closer drive for me than going to Cheesesteak by Matu in Pasadena. Overall the cheesesteak was nicely cooked, toasted sesame baguette / hoagie and super spicy pepper (I took one bite and it almost burned (spicy that is) my taste buds off (they did warn me) "ghost pepper spicy". For all the hype - it wasn't all that. I could get a nice bun at a nice bakery deli and make my own Waygu cheesesteak. Let's break it down..for my buddy and I it was about $90 for 2 x cheesesteaks, share salad and 2 x fried up chips. I know a bunch of fantastic $12-15 sandwiches plus $7 fries. I'm not a fan of mandatory 18% tip (albeit my server is as awesome!) $90 for 2 x sandwiches or $90 for 2 x KBBQ AYCE including Galbi, etc.. and dessert? It's a good sandwich! Not worth $90. Anyone rating this less than 5 stars is either a certified hater or a liar. I had one of the best meals of my life here for my birthday, from the service to the food to the drinks to the ambiance. Everything is a 10/10. I went with my usual when I'm trying to somewhere new, a little bit of everything. I personally got the Picanha Wagyu dinner, which came with 24 Hour Bone Broth, Shrimp Cocktail, Meatballs with Pomodoro Sauce, and 5-6oz of Center Cut Picanha with '47' Salad. The steak was obviously the star of the show but I was pleasantly surprised by the meatballs, some of the best I've had anywhere! I also tried the Branzino (which is wood-fired), Broccolini, and Twice Baked Potato, and I'd order every single one again. The waitstaff was so kind and didn't rush us at all, explained everything well, and went above and beyond by bringing out a Panna Cotta with a candle in it for my birthday. The perfect light, fruity ending to the meal! Truly nothing else to say other than this place is amazing and even just walking in made me smile because it's so perfect. read more

Delicious! The hot pepper was a bit overpowering so maybe a smaller sliver would be better. The meat was tender and juicy but not enough to make the roll soggy. Delicious! Bummer it's only 1 per person as I would've ordered another to-go!! read more

Had the chance to check out Matu Kai on the opening weekend. Amazing food, wonderful service and gorgeous venue. You can't go wrong with any of their menu items. I've had the Philly cheesesteak in the past, delicious. Tonight I decided to try one of the prix fixe menus. Specifically we had the ribeye dinner for two. Everything was delicious, but i have to say the stand out was definitely the ribeye brochettes. I could've eaten five more of these. The service was absolutely excellent, almost to the point of them being overstaffed, a good problem to have. The manager Ryan also went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of. Can't wait to come back again. It's about time Brentwood has some fun new hot spots. read more

All around a lovely meal. Service was quick. Ambiance was dark and romantic. No bad bite in terms of the food. I do think it would be awesome if they could incorporate an elevated chicken option similar to that of their sister Hiho. Great for date night. Looking forward to coming back. read more
