As a frequent commuter to Maui, this past year I rented a vehicle 70 times this year as I took 70 round trips flights for year 2019. Majority of the time, I've been using Avis Rental Car, as I have have been a loyal customer of Avis since the 90's. Recently, my employer sent us a notification to start using National Car Rental should we need a rental car for travel. Apparently, by signing up with National they put us into this so called - "Emerald Club" and I must say the 1st time I got a rental from National, I totally gotta give them "props" as the process of getting my rental car was so easy! After booking my flight to Maui via Hawaiian Airlines, then going to the National Car Rental website to book my car rental, I was given a confirmation for my rental on the day I was to be on Maui. After arriving on Maui & getting off of the train, I immediately headed towards the National Rental Car desk which posted a sign to just head on down an escalator to the National Car Rental area. Upon taking the escalator down to the National Car Rental area, I wasn't too sure if I had to check in, or do something else (like I said before..........I mostly used Avis). Suddenly, I saw two girls who worked for National Car Rental that were standing by a podium desk, so I walked up to them explaining I had a car rental reservation. Less than a second, the girl just tells me to walk up this aisle of cars to my right, and pick out whatever I wanted. You're kidding me, right? All I saw on that aisle of cars were either luxury vehicles, or sports cars..........hell yeah! So I promptly secured a Cadillac, as I wanted to be "BIG PIMPPIN'!" that day! Lol! I must say National's cars are well kept, clean, and the process of getting my car was painless, as there was no wait time! Upon returning my rental car later that day, the process was just as smooth...........upon pulling back into the airport depot, the clerk processed me right away, gave me my receipt, and I was off to catch my train back to the airport check in area. Easy peasy! Looks like I will be doing more business with National Car Rental, very happy to make the switch. read more

Fast Friendly Service with Clean and Diverse Selection of Vehicles Had a last minute need for a weekly rental on Maui for vacation. Researched rates across all partners, even though i had membership in the Emerald Club, Hertz Gold, Avis, and others. National provided the best options and prices for our trip. By itself, this wouldn't justify four stars, but the service of the counter staff, parking/checkout team, and the check in process made it seamless. You always appreciate people ready to help you when you arrive at the rental return (vs having to look for someone to check you back in). The National team was out front dancing and waving us through the rental funnel with smiles on their face (even though it was 95 degrees). A nice young lady checked out our car, gas, etc. and we were off and running. Thanks National for a good visit and we look forward to visiting your team again. I have called numerous times trying to get ahold of Someone at the OGG location and sit on hold forever then get hung up on when I am connected. Then trying to call the regular customer service number for national doesn't work because of the time zone difference. We stopped at a rest stop on the road to Hana, get back to the piece of crap Cherokee that would not start. There was no service so we waved down a police officer to drive me where I can make a call. I had to leave my family at the car. I called National back and forth for 8 hours. They were not able to coordinate the tow truck or a pickup. I had to call the police department back and they were the ones who finally took care of us. I will not trust National Car Rental with my family ever again. read more

Wasn't really planning on writing a review but for once had a great experience renting a car. When we arrived there was no lineup. The attendant was very nice. Upgraded our vehicle for no charge. Also did not try to up sell us with additional insurance or a "better" car. The car they gave us was a BMW convertible with just 1000 miles on it. Drove great. I've used National for a while since the Emerald Aisle is the most efficient way to get a rental car and start a trip, but I've never had an experience great enough to warrant a review. A couple hours after picking up the car, we got out for lunch only to hear a loud hissing noise coming from one of the tires. I called National right away, and the agent was super helpful in getting a tow truck out with a new car (same make and model) to exchange. The entire exchange was done before we finished lunch, with frequent updates from National. What could have been a vacation ruiner ended up being a minor hassle. And best of all, since the tire only needed a patch, we weren't charged anything for the tire or tow truck. I liked National before, but now I think I'll be loyal to them. read more

As an emerald exec picking up a car has always been easy. Just walk up to the exec aisle and pick whatever. This time around when we landed there were several maximas, a couple of blazers a challenger, a camaro coupe, and a mustang and a camaro convertible. They had a navigator and a camaro ss convertible as an upgrade. Not the best offering I have seen in years past, but certainly better than I was there a couple of years ago. I just returned from Maui where I rented a car from National for 8 days. Picking up and dropping off the car was quick and easy. Taking into consideration the COVID pandemic and anecdotal stories, I was expecting an hour wait. However, I was very pleased that there was no wait for both the pick up and drop off. As an Emerald member, I was able to "grab and go" from the Emerald Aisle. There were several cars for me to choose from in the Emerald Aisle. I booked an economy car but received a free upgrade to a sports car (Dodge Challenger) since no economy cars were available. I did have a minor issue with the car. The passenger side door appeared "sticky" and was difficult for myself and the resort valet personnel to open. I had to yank it very hard to open. It was easier for the driver to open the passenger's door from the inside. All in all, happy to have been able to secure a car rental during my Maui vacation for a relatively reasonable price and to have received an upgrade (especially during the car rental shortage)! Would definitely rent with National again. read more

I happen to rent here often and its time for a review. First, when you arrive at Kahului Airport, turn right out of the baggage claim and walk to the car rental shuttle area. National shuttles arrive every few minutes with nice drivers. If you are not a member of the Emerald Club, please stop now, join, and return to this review. Wow, that was quick! Now get off the bus and walk down the sidewalk on the right side of the building. No need to go inside, you are an Emerald Club member so go straight to the lot and grab whatever car you like, the key is waiting inside. Now for me, this is the proverbial "kid in the candy store"...Dodge Chargers, Nissan's, Kia's, Lincoln's, Ford's and even BMW's. If its parked in the Emerald Club lot, its for the choosing. Get something comfortable or something you have always wanted to try. Sync your phone, or use the navigation system that's available in most rentals these days. Then crank the air if you so desire (get comfortable with all controls prior to driving off the lot!), hand your license to the accommodating folks in the exit booth, then they hand it back, the gate swings up and Maui is yours to discover! The added bonus is upon return. Just follow the signs to the airport and rental return. Stay in the right lane just as you pass the original shuttle area and follow the signs. The young folks that check you back in are super friendly and efficient. Then over to the National building a few steps away and the shuttle will have you to the terminal in minutes. I suggest getting gas in Kahului prior to return to avoid exorbitant refueling charges. Plus Da Kitchen Cafe and Krispy Kremes are in the area and close to the gas stations. Emerald Club rules! Take the shuttle from the airport to the National rental center, pick your ride, go to kiosk, provide your DL and CC, and you're good to go. Ten minutes tops. My experience was no different at the Kahului National, freaking sweet! My only complaint - halfway through the trip, I figured out that I should have added S.B. as a driver, so we could both drive. When I called to take care of this, they said it would cost $50 extra and we would only be able to complete the paperwork in person. Hmph! I would rather play than spend 2+ hours driving back and forth to the airport from Kapalua. What a pain! read more

It was so fast. They have a separate area to themselves to the right of the rest. We are Emerald Club members. This time we reserved a luxury tier and it was a Cadillac Xts. Very nice and perfect for cruising. We loved the customer service. Before we exited the lot, they ask for your DL and who's the main driver. Then what option we wanted for the gas. We opted for them to fill it up. Easier and good pricing. We had a great time in Maui. Return was easy as well. The attendants came up to us in the Drop Off line and we were all set within minutes. My family arrived in Maui for a family Christmas vacation and due the size of our group, rented two vehicles on Dec 20, 2019 and one vehicle on Dec 23, 2019 using my valid corporate discount. Each vehicle was picked up on The Emerald Aisle in the dark. When I pulled up to the checkout gate a female employee was watching a male employee and made some comments about damage. I got out of my car to ask what was going on and she stated that their manager was coming down on them for not documenting vehicle damage and this guy had missed documenting some of the damage. She had told the gentleman walking around my car to document a passenger side front fender issue where someone must have gotten the car stuck on a curb. She also noted some scratches by the trunk of my vehicle. They said they would enter them in the computer so I'd have no issue when I returned the car but never gave me documentation so I took a few pictures just in case. During the time that I had the car rented from 12/20/18 to 1/2/19 the car was infested with ants. We found them crawling all over the exterior and on passengers inside the vehicle and had the car sprayed a couple of time with insect killer. When I returned the car on 1/2/19, I was asked how the rental was and mentioned the ant issue. The guy checking me in, Oli, said he was a manager and apologized and took 1 weeks rental cost off the vehicle which satisfied me at the time. National sent me a survey and I provided Oli with glowing feedback about his customer service and resolution to my issue. Yesterday, my daughter was contacted by my company because National Rental Car had filed a claim against my company and her for damage to the vehicle that she had rented on 12/20/18. Again, in her instance she arrived at The Emerald Aisle in the dark and asked an employee which vehicles she could take. The employee directed her to a Jeep that had been backed into a spot. She and her boyfriend and my grand daughter all noticed some damage to the rear of the vehicle but were excited to get such a nice vehicle. The damage was not identified and she was not given any documentation on existing vehicle damage at the time of rental or during her return. Based upon these two experiences, it is pretty clear that this location is having issues with vehicle damage and employees/customers not documenting existing damage. It appears that they are looking to pin damage on someone and my daughter drew the short straw. This is going to be a very complex matter now involving my corporation and insurance companies over an issue that we did not cause. I will change my review of National Rental Car - Maui, if they handle this situation properly. I the mean time, everyone renting a car from this facility should be aware that there is pressure from their management to find someone responsible for any damage to vehicles and it appears customers may suffer. read more

OGG made great updates to their car rental section. There is a trolley that takes you from the terminal, straight to car rental terminal. It is very organized and reminds me Vegas. The facilities are very clean and organized. There are restrooms and vending machines on every floor. read more

Worst customer service for any car rental place that I have visited in the United States. When I book online and bring the printed confirmation and you say...we do not have any cars left in your price range and you are 30 minutes late. Then the female manager on duty asked me to call American Airlines to verify that the flight got in late just to say...we will offer you a more expensive car $400 more for the week. I said that I would not pay for this, and want a shuttle back to the terminal. She refused and told my wife and I walk back to the airport...we do not want your business.
