Maui is, unfortunately, another subpar south of Boston Chinese restaurant. I went here with friends to go to Nick's Comedy Stop, held on Saturday nights in the function room (separate review). We were the first people in the room and the waitress immediately took our drink orders. Drinks were decent, but no prices were listed on the menus (tropical-style drinks ended up being about $6 or $7, not bad). There are many choices on the menu, but nothing stuck out at me, and that was a bad sign early on. I ordered beef curry from the ala carte menu. I asked the waitress about a side of the fried rice, and she said I could do that with the pork. In the end I was charged full price for the rice, as if I had ordered the full portion. The curry was very mild and fully of slimy celery and water chestnuts along with the beef and onions. The fried rice was dry. I also shared some crab rangoon with the table; they were pretty standard. Other people in the group mainly got appetizers. There were over 100 people in the function room to watch the comedy show, but there was probably one waitress in there all night, so service was sporadic after we received our food, particularly on water refills. In addition, she left the food on the table all night and then wrapped up everything after the show ended (after which our unfinished food had been sitting out for an hour). This place does appetizers like pu pu platters really well. The spare ribs on the bone were meaty and good. The pork strips were excellent too. I was less impressed with the fried rice. This is our go-to place when all we want is chicken fingers and spare ribs. Sometimes you just want some good appetizers. I would avoid anything more exotic that the Polynesian usuals here. Let me preface that I haven't experienced the night life/dine in and I am strictly reviewing the food and service. They food is good American Chinese food, they actually have a decent lunch combo plate and it's not too pricey. I recommend Lunch Combo #1 where you can pick 4 items for $9.85! On Thanksgiving Day we were painting the interior of our new old house. No turkey this day. Around 2pm we needed something to eat and I thought I could just pop down to McDonald's. Absolutely EVERYTHING was closed. Even the Chinese joints. But the Maui was open. I hesitated because I ate there a few years ago and vowed I'd never go back. But today it was Maui or nothing. I've lived 15 minutes from this place for over 12 years and never tried it until about 2 months ago. It is now our favorite chinese restaurnat for take-out. We used to have several places around that offered quality food but most have closed and new places have opened that are offering some of the worst chinese food I've ever tasted. About 2 months ago my family and I were looking for somewhere to get take-out and a guy I work with recommeded this place. I never knew it existed but I decided to give it a try. The outside of the restauraunt was a bit sketchy and when I got inside it looked like it hadn;t been updated since the 70's. But when I got home with the food we were surprised at how good it was. Everything from the appetizers (best egg rolls and dumplings ever) to the main meals were increadible. We have since gone back 4 more times and each time it has been as good. The general gau chicken is very similar to one of my favorite places I used to go to as a kid so finding this place has been awesome. If you plan on eating inside the place, don't let the crowded parking lot fool you. The place is pretty large and everytime I've gone there the lot was full but most were there for take-out. Recommended to me by a friends older brother who frequents the Maui, i ended up there late one night looking for good food and a good place to chill. And that was exactly what i found. The bar was packed (as is usual i guess) and we were seated all by ourselves in the dining room and attended to by a very helpful waitress. From the outside it looks like a pretty generic chinese food place, and lets face it the inside isnt much better. But damn is their food good! One of the best chinese food places ive ever had. I'm giving Maui 5 stars solely on the food....which is the best Chinese I've had from anywhere near! The place hasn't changed from when I had been 20+ years ago, definitely needs updating! But still in much better condition than Yangtze! They really could use a more friendly, personable staff. The waitstaff are terribly impersonal....really cold! I've found this place to be hit or miss. The service is mostly good, some of the wait staff are funny, some quiet but very efficient. The drinks are pretty good. The food really varies. Ive ordered the same thing one time to the next and it seems like different meals. I used to absoluetly love Maui and would make a trip which was not close numerous times I felt I was a regular until they forgot some of my food during one order and upon going all the way back due to expensive prices and hungry children I was confronted like a criminal as if I was trying to steal an appetizer after spending over fifty dollars! Maui has been an institution to Brockton, MA for so many years now that it should be a historical landmark. I have not lived in Brockton for many years but I never ever when I am home miss a chance at going to Maui EVER. I have on occasion driven it back to my home in VA before for my other family to enjoy who live here with me. I have bought friends from out of town to Maui and they all have loved it. The only problem with Maui is that it is not 24/7. Any of you who take it for granted, try moving to another state far away who have never heard of a pupu platter or chicken fingers and you will see what I mean. Make sure you keep count how many drinks or beers you have! They always add a couple to your bill figuring you lost count. This happened on a few occasions had my usual 3 beers got charged for 5! The last time me and my wife counted. I had 3 beers she had 2 drinks...we got charged for 5 beers and 3 drinks! When I noted error to bartender he got mad blamed me etc! Rude wait staff. But the food, while good is very overpriced and the portions are quite small compared to other restaurants. Substitutions will cost you a pretty penny ($1.25). Due to the limited combo choices (other places give you way more options), substitutions any combo meal could end up costing $14. That's a lot for the area, rude waitstaff, and atmosphere. Also, when the waitress brought my change to our table, my bills were soaked from the cognac shots she placed on top of my change and spilled. This was probably the worst meal I've eaten in years. We ordered a pupu platter for two. Where to begin with how bad it was? First, the items. ONE egg roll in a pupu for two. NO shrimp. Four tiny chicken fingers. Four skimpy teriyaki strips that were so old that my dog wouldn't eat them. The food was not fresh and the portions were tiny. We also ordered the rice and it was so mushy that it might as well have been mashed potatoes. That tells me that the rice had been sitting in a vat for a couple of days. Wonder when the last time the Brockton BOH toured their kitchen. They seem to be renovating which must be where all their money is going because it's not going into the food. I have been in Maui many times over the past 20 years, the food is always good but the service not so much. I have been there twice in the past few weeks because they have new waitresses. The one I have had the last two times is a blonde middle aged woman named Annmarie and she is sincere, and does an outstanding job making you feel welcome, getting your order to you in a speedy yet accurate fashion. We have been coming to Maui since it opened many many years ago. The food is great. Now that we've moved away it is a stop we make every time we return home for visits. The owners and servers are the same as when it opened and they are very kind. When they hear we are bringing food back for our plane ride home they always offer to give us more cookies and other things than we order - very sweet but not necessary. They have the absoulte best general gaus chicken I have even had in my life. I swear it stays crispy even though it sits in sauce and stays crispy even if u put if it in the fridge over night and eat it for lunch the next day, unlike other general gau chickens I've had. If you like chicken wings with more hair on them than on your own head, go for it!! It's disgusting really, and the chicken chow mein looks like something I feed my dog.. they claim that unless you request to have the crunchy noodles separate they put them under the chow mein so it's soggy! YUCK!! The lady that answers the phone and takes your order needs a class in customer service...she's so rude and acts like everyone is trying to steal (use a bad card)... I grew up in Brockton and I can tell you that every time my family and I go to Brockton we get Maui's this is the best chineese food in the entire world. I live in TN now and I have to admit they suck at food here. I love that Maui's will ship food to us where ever we are and it is worth the cost of the shipping. I have been eating here off and on for thirty years and to sum up the freshness/quality/tastiness of their food I can put it in one phrase-- "Hit or Miss". My best experiences with their food have been when we eat in the restaurant on Thur, Fri or Sat afternoons and evenings. Because they have such a large number of customers during that time period, they have no choice but to cook the food FRESH and serve it. Other times of the week (especially Mondays) they serve leftover which are either re-heated or re-dipped in oil and taste like cardboard. The worst take out time is from about 11:20 pm to about 12:45 am if you stop in and order take out. The other night I was CRAVING chicken fingers at about midnight and I called them and they told me that after 12:15 am to 1:00 am that I could walk in and order the take out (they do not take telephone orders after 12:15 am). We ordered Large chicken fingers and Small Pork Fried Rice and the price for two items was 19 dollars (CRAZY HIGH PRICE !!). We got them home and they were the WORST chicken fingers I have ever had -- they had to have been triple dipped in oil and they were cardboard (my husband hurt his tooth!) and the rice was dry and hard. Both were CLEARLY leftovers. When I called to complain they were closed -- so I called the next day and they wanted us to bring the chicken fingers and rice BACK to them (they have no system to credit a customer towards their next order in situations like this, which is ridiculous). We had already thrown them away and I am sure they know that -- it is how they serve you crappy late night take out and get away with keeping your money. SO, PEOPLE -- I suggest that you do not order take out from them after about 10 pm and completely avoid the restaurant on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays when they hit you with leftovers. It really is too bad because in general, their food is awesome when it is cooked fresh and served fresh. But MONEY is more important to them and they have been a HIT OR MISS place to get Chinese food in Brockton for the past 30 years. I would probably order from them more if I could be assured that my food would always be fresh and if it was not fresh, that I could get a CREDIT for the bad food over the phone (even if it is midnight and no matter where you are traveling from, they will not give you a credit unless you bring back the bad food -- they do this because they know that most normal people do not want to travel again after midnight to return bad food and so they probably laugh at you when they take your money and hand you a bag full of leftover hard chinese chicken fingers that they probably would have thrown away in another few minutes if I had not been stupid enough to actually buy them from them). The sad part it that they actually know me and my family there because we have been going to them for so many years and if you cannot offer a credit when you serve bad, leftover, overcooked food to your regular steady customers then its time to make sure that I go to Mee King or order a pizza instead of calling the Maui again (over the years my patronage of them has dropped off because of these issues and I have complained a few times to management and they simply do not care). read more
