Hands down one of the best places in the area. The outside you wouldn't expect them to serve such amazing food both myself and fiancé ended up here because the Applebees wait was ridiculous there was no wait here. we get nervous sometimes trying new places having had bad experiences but Maurice is something else I cannot say anything but nice things about this restaurant. We liked the setting. It's like eating dinner at home, it's cozy. The service was excellent, she checked on us just enough. Not too much, but not too little. The food was good, not great, but on the high end of being good. The chicken cordon blu was a little dry, but the cheese inside made up for that. Scallops were tasty and our friend's steak was excellent. The prices were very respectable, and that was nice surprise. I'd recommend this place to friends. read more

This is an old school favorite. We have been coming here for 40 years. Ownership and chefs may change but not the menu. I would have given Maurice 3 stars, but my husband said 4. On the plus side: very nice and efficient waitstaff, very reasonable prices, server brought us a pitcher of ice water on request (it's amazing how many restaurants refuse this simple request!), husband's dinner special (haddock with feta, artichoke hearts, and olives) was very good, temperature was comfortable (not the unfortunately frequent frigid cold AC), and the tables were spaced a good distance apart, making it easy to talk due to the quiet atmosphere. On the negative side: the lighting was very bright and harsh. Not at all appropriate for a fine dining establishment. This could be fixed so simply by just switching the ceiling light fixtures to a lower wattage bulb. My entree of steak with shiitake mushrooms and scallions was served with an unpleasant excess of melted butter. The vegetables (carrots and green beans) were overcooked. read more

We planned our mothers 80th birthday celebration at Maurices. The guest list fluctuated multiply times and Cory was so good natured and happy to help with every change. From the moment we arrived until we walked out the door every need was attended to. The menu had something for everyone. The best praise I can give is how wonderful Cory was about working with us on a family member that has a large amount of food allergies. Can I say hidden gem? This is a spot for a special occasion. Our second visit was for our 26th anniversary. Very special! The staff was friendly and helpful. Ambiance quaint and subdued. We had a leisurely fabulous dinner. Mrs had a pasta dish which she enjoyed. I had the small cut top sirloin with brandy sauce. WOW! The wife had a taste and was immediately envious. Perfectly cooked and there was enough gravy to go with the mashed potatoes. The good thing is that you have lots of options to compose your dinner as you would like. Example: 4 kinds of potato, different vegetables, 2 cuts of top sirloin and 6 sauces. I wanted to have 3 of them! We will be certain to go back when anywhere nearby. read more

Visiting friends in ME and attended a Wine Tasting dinner last evening. The owner was attentive, the food was great - and there was no skimping! They accommodated my Vegetarian friend seamlessly with delicious alternatives. Service was efficient and friendly. Wines promoted from Spain and South Africa were delicious and affordable. This was my first time to Maurice's. The hostess and waitress was friendly . The decor is nice ! Very clean . Romantic atmosphere ! Pretty table settings ! Quiet. Tables filled quickly. We started out with coffee . They brought out a basket with warm French bread and butter . I had a cup of clam chowder and my guest had the salad . Both were very good ! We then had warm spinach and cheese dip with toasted French bread . That was very good ! We both had baked stuffed haddock with scalloped potatoes and green beans . Both of our sides were cold but the green beans tasted good . My guests haddock had bones and was missing lemon . I could not find the clam stuffing . I wonder if they gave us the Boston haddock instead ?! In the hour and a half we were there no one checked on us to see if we would like a coffee refill , a napkin or butter for our green beans . We had to flag down someone. We had two different waitresses. One took the order . One brought the food . It was nice to not be rushed but we didn't see anyone again until it was time for the bill. We got dessert to go. They were ok. It seems like a nice place . I'd try again for lunch or breakfast . I was hoping they had some kind of crepes on the menu and French press coffee instead of regular. But the coffee was good. I'd try a different entree next time. I heard the steak is good. I have to say I checked out their Facebook and website before I came. It would be very helpful if it was updated a lot more often . The website has not been updated since the fall. read more

This was our second visit to Maurice's. For the area, this is considered fine dining. We made dinner reservations and were seated promptly in between two parties with an infant and a two year old respectively. The infant cried once or twice and his family took him outside for a breather, which was fine - we've all been there. However, at the other table the two year old screeched uncontrollably every four minutes like clockwork and her mother had absolutely ZERO control over her child. What a real fine dining restaurant would do is relocate the clueless mom, the useless boyfriend and the little screecher to a part of the restaurant where they would annoy only themselves and not paying guests. Unfortunately, the waitstaff and the hostess did absolutely nothing, just let the little miscreant take her tantrums and screw everyone else. Worse yet, it seems like the clueless mom was a friend of half the waitstaff, including our waitress. I don't believe that they even paid for their meals! I do however know that they ruined the dining experience of the paying guests at the establishment. It took over 40 minutes after appetizers to receive our main courses, which broke down into 10 additional tantrum serenades by the 2-year-old-from-hell. The wine was served at kitchen temperature (80F) and had to be chilled to appropriate cellar temperature. The food this time was also not up to par. My pork chop wasn't properly seasoned and had little flavor of apple. My wife's chicken sat on top of a greasy bed of overcooked fettuccine. The stuffed clam appetizer we ordered was all breading and no clam (apparently clams as well as baby sitters are impossible to find in Western Maine). When we were ready to leave, we asked the waitress to pack up one of our meals to go. She returned with an empty meal container and left it next to the meal to be packed up. The message was clear, "pack it up yourselves." This is what I expect from a Sizzler, and not a fine dining establishment. If I hear that the waitstaff has been shaken out, the kitchen has returned to order and Maurice's has piled up the kid's highchairs in the parking lot and set fire to them, then and only then would I take another chance. My wife and I absolutely love this restaurant. My wife insists on stopping by every time we're in town. Two must have's are the French Onion Soup and the Escargot. The escargot melts in your mouth, and I have yet to find a comparable french onion soup. They display local artists work on the walls, and the ambiance is very nice. If you're in the Oxford Hills this is definitely the place to stop for a great meal. read more

My favorite place when I am in town. The food is always fabulous and I absolutely love the table side Caesar salad, where they prepare the dressing right there. It is so good!!!! During a week to 10 day stay, we visit at least twice. The prices are reasonable and they have a full bar. Lots of good wine to choose from. I normally order a seafood dish, but have never picked a favorite, since they are all so good. Service has varied, but Lena is the best! She has always given us top rate service, but she has been there a long time. Have lucked out with their specials before, which are always top notch. We have never had to wait, but have also called for reservations at times to insure we get seated. Give it a try! read more

Stopped here for lunch on our way from Montreal to Vermont. Decent little diner style spot. Service was great. I stuck with some basic stuff, I had the chicken and fries, fries came with gravy. The gravy was great chicken was pretty good. Meant to order poutine, but maybe next time. Decided to go out to dinner with some family members and we ended up at Marcel's. The couple we went with had been there several times before. In fact, one of them had grown up in the area and has been a Marcel regular for many years. The evening we decided to go was probably one of the coldest evenings of the year and we couldn't wait to get there and find a comfortable seat, which we did. Upon arrival we were promptly seated and like clockwork our drink orders were taken. Soon after we're were provided menus and given several minutes to make our dinner selections. Our company ordered the 2 for $25 special and both got the 7 oz steaks, which they both enjoyed. There meals came with soup or salad and they both decided on soup, with one ordering the potato leek and the other getting the French onion. I ordered the chicken codon blue and I also got the French onion soup. The chicken was delicious, cooked perfectly with just the right amount of ham and covered with a cheese sauce the complemented the dish. The best part of the meal was the French onion soup. Th we e was a small surcharge, but well worth it. The soup was a warm broth loaded with onions, cheese and a bread bottom. It was the best French onion soup I have ever had. My wife ordered the cheesy shells with lobster. She was a bit dissapointed with her dish. She was expecting a bit more lobster than she received and the dish turned out to be a over priced mac & cheese. Other than the lack of lobster in the shells lobster and cheese, the rest of the meal was excellent. Service, on the other had was a tad slow. The waitress was a bit stiff at the beginning of the meal, however became much more friendly as the evening progressed. read more

Recommended to us by the innkeeper as her favorite restaurant, we decided to go to dinner there while in South Paris, Maine for the night. I had scallops (mistake) and my friend had the Haddock, which was all over the menu in a bunch of different preparations. I should have done the fish. She enjoyed her food very much, while I thought that the scallops tasted like a chemical. My side dishes were just fine. Don't think there's a lot of choices in town, but other than my choice on the menu, it was good enough. Stick with the fish. read more

Was treated to Maurice's after conducting the school district's Honor's Orchestra Festival. The venue is really inviting. The lighting was just great, the music wasn't annoyingly loud. The waitress was really calm and she checked on our party just at just the right interval. I had the duck which was really good! Then dessert I had a blueberry bundt cake. Ummmmm.. We visited Maurice's for the first time last night for a birthday celebration and we had an absolutely lovely time. The food was fresh and delicious. The potato leek soup is fabulous. We both had scallop dishes (petite) portions which were plenty. Try the caramel bundt cake for dessert. Our server was polite and gave us time to enjoy each course. Food was really good (portions are large), but this seemed like a local favorite- we had a big table of loud golf enthusiasts behind us, and the waitress was chatting them up a bit. We had to flag her down twice for water refills. The ambiance-killers are what knocked a star off of this review. I think the other rooms of the restaurant were a bit softer and quieter, which we would have enjoyed. Between courses, they give a champagne and sorbet palate cleanser. I told the waitress I was pregnant, and the kitchen made me one with a lemon lime soda instead, which I greatly appreciated. read more
