The worst breakfast I ever had, the cook doesn't know how to make eggs over easy or scrambled eggs. He cooks on a dirty griddle. That's pretty bad. Felt bad for the waitress, she tried to please us. Also the home fries were greasy and the toast was burnt. This was on Saturday morning at 7am. Have to find another breakfast place for my way down the shore. The owner needs to look under the service refrigerants looks like it hasn't been swept in years. read more

If you are traveling to Cape May from Gloucester, Salem and Camden counties you have probably driven past the Maurice River Diner and seen a parking lot full of cars. After a recent business meeting in the Wildwoods I decided to see why this isolate diner is so busy (And, ask a local how to pronounce Maurice it definitely does not match the name you might be familiar with.). This modern diner shines inside and out but what really matters is the warm welcome, excellent service and awesome diner food. Yes, there is the classic overwhelming menu but I decided to go with the Italian Trio Special, which came with soup and dessert in addition to chicken parm, a meatball and lasagna (Complete you know.). I asked my friendly waitress about the Navy Bean Soup and she admitted to having tried it but she said it was popular. The "cup" of soup comes in a large bowl chock full of ingredients with a taste that rivals any diner's bean soup that I have ever had. I could eat this soup almost every day (No one eats Navy Bean soup every day.). The corn bread square and roll were fresh and yummy! My trio presented me with three options as to where to begin and I am glad that the chicken parm was facing me because it was perfect! The chicken moist under crisp breading with just the right amount of melted cheese and a sauce/gravy that was rich in tomato flavor. The large meatball matched the chicken parm in flavor and its as large and made me happy. The lasagna was so-so because the noodles were very soft and almost melted in my mouth whereas I prefer a chewier pasta. It's meat also did not reach the heights of the parm and meatball so I would call it average. Thankfully I ate the parm first but I would not hesitate to order the Trio again. I had no room for dessert but my delightful waitress said, "I'll wrap up a rice pudding for you to take home." Boy, am I glad she did. It was a large serving that had to wait to the next day but it was really good rice pudding. So, if you are traveling down Route 55 or up Route 55 and your car takes you onto Route 47 in Port Elizabeth be sure to travel hungry because you definitely should stop at the Maurice River Diner!! read more

First off I know it's a diner. That being said diners come in all shapes and sizes some do diner well some don't. We think the MD does it well first off very welcoming walking in it looked busy but there was a booth open the diner vibe it was packed but plenty of room and we were sat immediately. Our server Kennzie was kind, attentive and helpful letting .my wife know breakfast served all day, always happy to get breakfast at dinner time got eggs turkey sausage links not patty and home fries. I on the other hand am a dinner person I went all in with the hot Turkey platter switched out the mashed for fries and added coleslaw second veggie. It was a worthy size portion and hit the spot. Cole slaw was that perfect shore slaw. Came with a salad mixed greens not just your mothers iceberg salad a roll and cornbread. I didn't have room but went to the counter and checked desserts got the chocolate mousse cake. Was huge Kenzie thoughtfully brought two forks so my wife could dive in. Came here for breakfast and ordered an omelette, which I never usually do. BEST omelette I've ever had. Our waitress was very attentive, super sweet, and made sure to check on us. Bacon was perfect and diet soda was bubbly. Also very homey vibes. Loved it here. read more

Took a friend here for breakfast and it was ok. I had scrambled eggs and scrapple, while my friend had an omelette. My scrapple was not Habbersette's, which has been the brand of choice in the Philly/S. Jersey for 100 years, and it tasted like it was deep-fried. My friend said his omelette was "ok". Ive had decent meals here but last night I had a few things I am putting on my never order list. The crab soup is just thick white cream with no flavor. Not sure if I was eating noodles or fake crab meat. I got chicken croquettes. No flavor or texture. Was like eating a tasteless stuffing meatball. Wife got a French Dip. Very nice size and was good. Her only complaint was the huge onion chunks. She just took them off. I liked them. Place is always clean and comfortable and servers are nice. Food was fine but we left a pair of RayBan men's sunglasses on the table. Called 20 mins later and miraculously no one could find them. So the busboy didn't see them on the table????? They said the next customers might've picked them up, which I highly doubt as we were all the way in the back and it was midafternoon, no one was waiting for a table. We pass this diner all the time on the way to the beach always looks busy, Saturday before Mother's Day we were heading home and it didn't look too busy and stopped in for lunch/ dinner we were seated right away the waiter was very friendly I ordered land and sea which came with a salad w/ Cesar dressing and to my surprise it was house made and was very good land was a 10oz NY strip steak with crab stuffed flounder with coleslaw and other veggies, everything was great took 1/2 home I would have done 5 Star but the nagging flies for this time of year was disturbing maybe because they are near a river /wetlands but they were annoying.... read more

5/16/24 I highly recommend this restaurant. My friend has dined here many times so we stopped on our way to beautiful Diamond Beach for dinner. I ordered the Tour of Italy entree for just 18.99-it came with lasagna, a meatball and chicken parm. It was outstanding. Along with that I got a bread basket, salad, and dessert all included. The only disappointment to me was the salad and dinner rolls-there was slightly rusted lettuce. It was so minor I did not bring it to our server's attention. The cornbread in the bread basket was almost like a dessert!! Sweet and moist. I had planned to take the rolls home but they were stale- hard and dry. My friend ordered the chicken cordon bleu panini. It was crammed with lots of blue cheese. It sure looked decadent and she enjoyed it very much. With my dinner it came with jello or pudding. Pudding was rice, tapioca, vanilla or chocolate (and maybe one other)?! I got the rice pudding to go. I've not tried it but it sure looks great. Jimmy was our server. Excellent service. He was friendly and personable. I'm glad I tried Maurice River Diner- I would certainly go back. I have driven by it more times than I can count! The diner is classy and clean. Soup was served cold, soda was flat and watery, fish and chips seemed precooked and warmed up. My husband loves a certain type of soup they serve and it was completely different and not nearly as good. read more

The waitress was outstanding. My husband's dinner special chicken pot pie was outstanding. I ordered broiled Sea scallops, which were sent back. Cut up, slimy bits of scallops, certainly not broiled,nor whole like they should be....looked like they were floating in some kind of watery broth........changed to the meatloaf special.....that was just as bad if not worse. I asked for the gravy to be on the side, when My plate was brought out, gravy on top of everything, veggies, mashed potatoes and meatloaf....I was hoping that the meatloaf "Special" was homemade, but was clearly a restaurant supply chain pressed patty of beef parts, disgusting.....well, my tossed salad was good.....the meatloaf will hopefully be enjoyed by the turkey buzzards that fly over our farm. We have had breakfast and chicken salad sandwiches, grilled cheese in the past, all are good, but stay away from any fancy specials, you will be wasting your money. read more

Gosh, I miss these sort of diners. We don't have many of them in Charlotte. A menu the size of a Bible with everything from fried fish to spanakopita and breakfasts from pancakes to benedicts. I was warmly welcomed on a Sunday morning at 7:45 am and shown to a table immediately. The place did start to fill in over the next two hours or so and when it started to look like people were going to be waiting, I took my laptop and headed onwards. Breakfast this morning was a ham and cheese omelet. Perfectly assembled, a large portion and yes, I did eat one or two bits of the excellent potatoes on the side. Very disappointed, we used to frequent here a lot but since the new owners have taken over it has went downhill. Our last visit will be it for us, as we were sat close to the bathrooms that were either backed up or had a broken pipe. The whole one side of the restaurant stunk like sewage. Thank you Maurice River Diner for being the only Diner that I know of in South Jersey that I'd give a 5 Star Rating! Our family stops here often while traveling on RT. 47 on our way to the Shore, today it was just my wife and I traveling to the Shore. We only went down for a few hours, to starting getting the house ready for the summer. My wife sent the kids a text letting them know to DoorDash whatever they wanted because we're stopping at Maurice River Diner on our way home. The lawn and landscaping is always well kept and the building is welcoming. When you walk in you notice that the inside is modern and clean. MRD has a classic Jersey Diner Menu just about anything you may be in the mood for you can get it here. Breakfast, Lunch or Diner are available all day. Immediately upon being seated we were greeted by our waitress, she was very pleasant as she took our drink order. She returned quickly with our drinks and we placed our dinner order. My wife ordered Tomato Crostini Soup (think bruschetta as a soup, forgot to take pic but I found one on the web that I'll post) and Chicken Piccata I ordered the Crab Bisque and the Veal Parmigiana. We didn't wait long for our our soups. Good news is we both enjoyed them very much, bad news is we ate them so fast I forgot to take a pic! In true great Jersey Diner fashion our dinner was served right after finishing our soup. You're not waiting for food at MRD. My wife enjoyed her dinner very much she told me she ranks the MRD Chicken Piccata in her top 2! She found it to be flavorful and filling. For me it's difficult to find very good Veal Parmigiana if I'm not at a Mom and Pop Italian restaurant. But, remember I said in the beginning that, "MRD is what a South Jersey Diner should be" and that means the have large menus and everything on that menu is good! My Veal Parmigiana was perfectly covered in sauce and cheese, it had just the right about of breading to Veal and I enjoyed that slight crush I got in every bite. The size was old school big, it took up half of the large plate that it was served on. I typing this review at home, we ate just 3 hours ago. I was stuffed when we left but typing this review makes we want to go back, tomorrow! MRD has a beautiful dessert selection and I never leave without ordering cheese cake but today I was to stuffed so I ordered a slice for the road. If you travel RT. 47 to the Shore and you've never made a stop at MRD you are missing out. Do yourself a favor and plan for a little extra time and give MRD a try, I'd be very surprised if you don't leave full and satisfied. read more

Classic diner, nice and clean and bright inside. We stopped here for brunch en route to the East Point Lighthouse during the Lighthouse Challenge Weekend. We had French toast and a blt. I've passed by this diner going to and from various shore points since the late 90s and tonight I thought it would be great to give their food a try. We were not disappointed in the least. New Jersey is often called (and rightfully so) the Diner Capital of America.  And one of my favorite diners is a diner I pass often en route to the Jersey Cape from Philly.  It's in Down Jersey and it is appropriately named the Maurice River Diner after the nearby Maurice River. It is great. First of all, it is quite large with several dining areas.  It is kept so clean.  The menu is extensive and always up-to-date.  They have free WIFI.  The service is efficient and friendly and (drumroll) perhaps best of all - the food is tasty! Recently I did stop en route heading down to Strathmere on the Cape and I was well rewarded.  The beef barley vegetable soup was a perfect starter - only perhaps a few degrees hotter would have been my preference. The meatloaf, cheese, and spinach ciabatta sandwich board totally hit the spot and I highly recommend it.  It also comes with creamy cole slaw, pickles, and a generous serving of French Fries. Gus my waiter hails from Northern Greece so we could discuss missing Europe together.  He was excellent as a server as well.  And on Sundays they have something I have never tried but I hope to someday called Pot Roast.  Can't wait to see what this dish reminds me of. The Maurice River Diner is a complete winner in my book and worth a stop if hungry going to and from the shore. read more

Came here for breakfast with friends. This is a big diner. It was pretty busy when we came on a Sunday morning but we didn't have to wait long for a table. They have a large menu with breakfast along with other items. I ordered the cinnamon French toast with a side of bacon. Both were delicious. Prices were reasonable. Service was just average, one of the people in our group's meal was supposed to come with toast and they forgot it and we didn't get a chance to ask for it again. I saw other reviews with issues with cleanliness but it wasn't a problem when we were here. Overall this was a solid diner and I would stop here again for breakfast. They also have a selection of baked goods up front as well. read more

I am a big fan of clean diners with good service and fresh tasty food. This one gets all 5 stars from me! Normally when I'm here we have to go to Larry's II but we happened to be in a different area when hunger struck this time. MRD fit the bill and my friend and I enjoyed a very satisfying lunch here on our way to doing errands. There is of course a beautiful parking lot and the facade of the building is almost historical looking. I'm so glad I got to try out a new diner this time and I look forward to returning. Maurice River Diner is a well lit and always clean diner. It is a regular stop for us on the way to our from the Jersey shore. I have not once been disappointed. Their omelets are wonderful. The bruschetta burger is a very tasty. Wraps are good and varied. Basic sandwiches always good. One of the best things when they have it is the roasted red pepper soup. I wish it was a mainstay on their menu. I've had more than I can remember to name in this review on our many visits here. Prices are reasonable. Portions are very generous...if you're stopping on the way to the shore, take an extra cooler to hold your leftovers and you won't have to cook when you get home, or save them for the next day!
