Mavi is a great spot. If you're looking for good Mediterranean, skip Alexandros and come here. The food here is terrific. The staff is very nice. The kebabs are very good and full of flavor. The bulgar rice is delicious as well. I had my wife's college grad party there and it was a really good time. I always start off with hummus when I go to a Greek/Turkish place as a litmus test for the rest of the meal. I mean, if you can't do hummus right, then wtf else is going to be good?!? It was delicious and the rest of the food as well. They make their own baklava on-site so it is fresh and delicious unlike some other places which get it shipped from some places in Queens. Great addition to the area... The Mt Sinai / Miller Place / Rocky Point / Sound Beach area has such a small variety of casual restaurants, its the right type of food in the right location. The cuisine is typical turkish / mediterranean. Well prepared... we weren't disappointed with anything we ordered. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Best baklava on Long Island! I will be back just based on dessert and the beautiful dining room. However, I also enjoyed the red lentil carrot soup, falafel, and hummus. The babaganoush was unusual - made with sour cream? Not my favorite dish of the night (did I mention the baklava?). Would have expected the servers to be knowledgable about ingredients & spices. From other reviews, it seems the owners are off on Mondays (deservedly so) otherwise I'm sure they'd have been more forthcoming with details. All in all, a welcome neighborhood option! Can't wait to try other desserts and entrees. Would vote to remove the pasta dishes from the menu. Just seems so unnecessary. read more

I returned to Mavi and was so happy I did, the food was excellent, well priced, and run by an incredibly kind and hospitable husband and wife. I'll be honest, I had been here awhile back and hadn't had the best experience, I later learned it was because the owner/chef was out of town handling family health issues. If you're like me I can assure you it's worth it to give Mavi another try, with the owner cooking it was so far from the previous meal and service I had - in the best possible way. In other words, I humbly learned to not judge this place until you've had a proper meal served and cooked by the owner and his lovely wife. So if you've been before, try them again! Easily the best Mediterranean food in the area, and to add to the perfection it is BYOB. I'd recommend eating in, it's a quaint and cosy restaurant with great service, plus like most food it tastes far better if you eat it right from the kitchen. This is a neat little place in Mt. Sinai, clean, friendly and nicely located. Right from the restaurant sign, to the menu, it appears the restaurant owner(s) took pride in setting this place up. The service is nice though if you get seated on the table in the front porch when it is busy, you could be forgotten for short times. Hey, outta sight, outta mind! I don't hold that against them as they offered to move us back in once the restaurant emptied but with the appetizers on the table we preferred not to have an interruption. The food comes nicely arranged, however for me this restaurant broke a cardinal rule for most of the items we ate: no matter how well the food is presented, it must always taste better than it looks. Here, while it looked great, the taste did not have any oomph! We ordered the White Bean Salad appetizer which was very good. One of the main entrees, the Beyti Kabab was also very good however the accompaniments the grilled vegetables and the Bulgar rice were so so. The vegetables had been been slightly over grilled and mushy and had too much of rosemary. Also, the grilled long peppers were rather dull and did not fit into the meal. The Bulgar rice, usually a favorite of mine, was surprisingly dull. The second entree, the Chicken Kabab tasted bland and dry, like it had been grilled for too long on low. I like it grilled on high, slightly charred on the outside but moist and juicy on the inside. The Chicken entree came with an identical set of over "rosemaried" veggies and rice and again the whole entree ensemble though pretty to look at, just did not excite the palate. Far from it. So in all: Service: 4 Stars. Great except if you get the the bleachers seating Ambiance: 3.5 stars. Neat place setting but the interiors are a little bare, but hey I came here for the food Food: 2.5 - 3 stars depending on what you get. Higher, I guess if you love loads of rosemary on your veggies, or if you lean more on looks than taste. read more

One of the best Mediterranean restaurants in the area. Unlike most, the spices in the food aren't overpowering. It's also important to note that the service is great and oh yeah..BYOB and they don't charge an obnoxious corking fee! Gyro plate and kafte plate are both delicious. Calamari is cooked perfectly, light but crisp. If you're with a group, grab the Mavi delight appetizer as well, which is basically tapas-sized portions of 5 different appetizers (all of which are tasty). All meals come with soup or salad, go for the chicken, rice and lemon soup (avgolemono soupa as its called in my house) which rivals my own Yaiyai's cooking! The place is small, so you might want to call ahead during dinner time (especially weekends). Not sure if they take reservations, but I doubt it. read more

Was here Saturday night with a party of four. The other 3 people have been here at least on 1-2 other occasions. The food is delicious. Fresh, tasty, well-prepared. We had a few appetizers which were excellent. Most of us had the chicken kabobs with Bulgar- delicious and one person had a mixed grill. We had Baklava for dessert which was superb. The place is fairly new and has a nice atmosphere. The only criticism is that that the pacing of the food needs further attention. The entrees came out way too quickly. Went recently with friends and will definitely be coming back! The food was outstanding and the service was the friendliest I have ever experienced. They opened the wine we had brought and were prompt with everything and just so nice. I can't speak for the meat dishes as I am a vegetarian, but the felafel, hummus, etc were incredible. Excellent! The food is delicious. It is small but the size doesn't really matter when you taste the food. It is top quality. If you order a meal with an option of soup definitely choose the red lentil. The menu could be better organized because there is a takeout menu and a dine in menu which is less detailed and has less options. I would recommend them just making both menus the same. Sinai across from the Fire Department. A great dining experience combining value, delicious food and an inviting casual atmosphere make for a real treat! The place is small and very "homey". Everyone is so friendly, and the food was fantastic! The Shrimp Shish Kebab... Sooo Good. MY husband John had the Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup....Delicious! and the Lamb Shish Kebab...Yummy! Had dinner on a Friday night. Liked the decorations and ambiance. Small place, few tables, family oriented. Food was good, large portions. I had the mixed grill and came with a salad. Food came out quickly, it was hot, and nicely seasoned. It's a BYOB place and they said no charge for opening. Turkish coffee was good! I didn't give it 5 star because staff was not friendly. When I first saw something new opening up at this location, I first had my fingers crossed for it to be something like an independent coffee shop, mostly because I thought it would be the most 'exotic' addition to the area. (I'm slowly learning since moving here that sometimes a restaurant that isn't Italian, a pizza place, Chinese food, or a sushi restaurant is something 'exotic'). Boy was I wrong (and gladly so). This place is awesome. I've gotten take-out from here quite a few times, and I've tried to sample the menu as best I can. Appetizers: I tried the babagonoush right on the tails of my failed attempt at making my own; considering I pass by this place daily, if I'm ever in the mood for baba, I'm just going to stop here, as it's pretty great (and comes with a nice big stack of pita). The calamari is great -- I may not have the most sophisticated palate when it comes to this stuff, but it was a great texture, wasn't overcooked, and had a nice flavor. Sandwiches: the doner pita is more than I could have hoped for -- all the mildly greasy (in a good, not gross way)-yet crispy deliciousness you would hope for, wrapped up in a nice pita that is incredibly filling. The kofte pita is also great with some amazing spices mixed in with the lamb and beef. The fries were not super crispy, but that was most likely because of getting them as a takeout. It's nothing a little ketchup or yoghurt sauce can't handle. (Plus, by the time I get to the fries, I really shouldn't be eating anymore anyway, because the sandwich was so filling). If I have inadvertently made you afraid of the fries, their rice is great (which I'll get to in a second), and you can always pay extra and sub a salad... Kababs: First and foremost -- if you think you're still hungry after having one of their salads and the full kabab plate, you're either an athlete, haven't eaten all day, have a ridiculous metabolism, or in need of rethinking your dietary choices. Both times I've gotten a kebab plate, it's turned into two meals. (And this stuff reheats nicely). I first tired the iskender kabab because it sounded interesting; I did for some reason think it was going to come out looking like a Turkish version of nachos.... not quite. It was essentially pita cut into small strips that may or may not have been fried, but given the giant pile of doner meat with the tomato and yoghurt sauce on top, crispiness did not stand a chance. It was delicious (though I still think Turkish nachos would be an awesome idea... just sayin'). The doner plate (and I'd imagine any of the other kababs that come with veggies and rice) is pretty epic. You have your rice (which is very flavorful and moist, half of it is white, the other half is some other seasoned rice-type deal that is quite flavorful), with your meat piled on top, and then some wonderful mixed grilled veggies on the side. There is also an almost small salad with thinly sliced red onions with seasoning on the side, and a big grilled pepper (which is wonderfully spicy) and a grilled tomato. Dessert: The baklava... well, it's baklava; you have the slightly syrup sodden phyllo balanced with the still crispy phyllo with pistachios inside. The pieces look small, but they're dense, just like baklava should be. The staff: They are incredibly pleasant and kind people; even if they're bustling around getting things done, they make sure not to ignore you. I've had to wait a little longer than expected when I ordered takeout, and they were incredibly apologetic; but, it's not a big deal, the food is totally worth it. My two favorites are the chicken kebab and the chicken panini (their paninis are served on pita bread, which I thought was a unique take on the toasted sandwich as I had not had that before). 3.5 Stars. Super clean new little Mediterranean place on North Country Rd in Mt. Sinai. It's on the way home for me, so I couldn't help but stop in one evening. The restaurant is a small operation with just a few tables but it is sparkly new on the inside. The staff are nice and friendly. The food is pretty straight-forward Mediterranean and Turkish (y'know, gyros, falafel, chicken wraps etc), but they also have fish and other plates on their specials board. Everything is made-to-order on the spot. I took a chicken wrap with fries and a falafel plate to go. No surprises here. Since I love falafel, I will make this my new go-to spot.
