Thank you Douglas L. for letting us know that NTB is now Mavis. I was trying to find the Needham St. location on the NTB website and was super confused when it would not show up. But when I popped over into Yelp, there was Douglas' post, explaining it to me! Another nail, and yet another tire bites the dust... make that three since the tread on them were found to be too worn. But you can't go odd, so four it is! And a 'new' spare tire to rotate into the trunk. (Please carry a spare. My PSA of the day. I hear new cars may be sold without these days... Don't know if this is true or not. But get yourself a spare tire if your car doesn't already have one. (And maybe a long handle wrench.) It is just a good idea.) So new tires for the 2020 pandemic winter, but then, safety first! They also change oil here for $40 if your car is needing that. NTB's website mentions curbside service. But Mavis does not offer this. You have to go inside - mask required. The store still looks the same from the outside, so look for blue and yellow stripes and the old sign (NTB National Tire & Battery) on Needham Street. 2020 pandemic visit *** 2021 pandemic visit A look back and my eye caught sight of something sticking out of my tire. Ugh, it is a nail, and by the curve of the tire, so not likely patchable. Fortunately: 1) the tire stayed inflated and we managed to get home safely (so no need to call AAA) and 2) we had paid $12 per tire for their Road Hazard Policy insurance (free patching, but if it deemed unpatchable, based on how worn the tread is, the replacement tire is prorated) last year, when we replaced all 4 tires. [Note: According to their website, a typical flat tire repair will cost $14.95, including rebalancing, for most cars with rims under 18 inches] Mavis got a tire in (they gotta match!) the next day, and were able to get the tire mounted and balanced on my car by the day's end, all for $35 plus change (which included the $13 insurance for the fresh free replacement tire, since we haven't been driving all that much during the pandemic). I brought 2 cars here for tire replacement. Everything was going well and they worked with me to cycle the cars through and get the new tires mounted and balanced. On the positive side, both cars have no vibrations as a result of the mounting and balancing, unfortunately, they screwed up both jobs. On the first car, after we got it back home and took it on the highway it, pulled hard to the left. We had declined the $90 "alignment" service because the car had always been tracking straight. Somehow they were able to make it have a very bad alignment issue after the new tire install. Not sure if it was deliberate. On the 2nd car, they dented in 2 of the 4 center caps on the wheels. I talked to Giovanni the manager there. He agreed to replace the 2 center caps with used center caps. He did not call back to follow up. After a week, I called him for status and he did not return the call. I just bought the 2 new center caps myself to replace the ones damaged by NTB. I won't return there. read more

The manager, Joshua, was extremely helpful and thoroughly examined my tire and could not find a reason that would have produced a tire air leak. I wanted to pay for his time, but he said it was a courtesy. Because of his kindness, I will take my car to this location for any service that is not part of my warranty. I was not happy with my latest experience at Mavis (NTB). I have now waited two months so please understand, this is not a sudden upset review. The power steering on my car suddenly went one day, and I managed to drive it to Mavis (NTB). It is convenient since I can walk there from my house. They told me that my water pump went which effects all the other items that run on the belt. It would have been fine if that was all that needed to be done, but then they told me how my brakes/pads were all gone, and the struts needed replacing, and the sway bars, along with some other work. The car was not running, so I could not just take it somewhere else, but in hindsight I should have had only the pump done and then taken it to another shop. I did not because I had a good experience at Mavis (NTB) the last time I was there and I thought I would give it a try again. It took two days to get the work done, but I was ok with this, it is COVID times and I did not need my car right away. However, after I picked up the car, I noticed it making a high pitched scraping noise as I am driving it home. So I go back to Mavis (NTB). I even recorded the sound, so they can hear it. I was told to leave it and they would take care of it. I was later told that the new brakes are rubbing and making that sound, which is not good since it is wearing down the new brakes, and it is bad for mileage. The next day I came back again, picked up the car, and within a couple of blocks I can tell it is making the noise again. I go right back and this time they tell me they cannot take the car, I should bring it back tomorrow. I come back tomorrow and I am told the person I need is not in, come back the next day. I also noticed at this point that there is a strange thunk noise coming from the back of the car every now and again, like driving over a nut at low speeds, and when driving fast, like a tank shacking up and down. I told them about that too. I bring the car back the next day, leave it for an hour or so, when I get it the high pitched scrape is not noticeable, but the thunk sound is there the moment I back up. So I had one of the mechanics ride with me in the car so I could point out the sound. He hears it right away, and they take the car back into the shop while I wait. About 30 minutes later they call me in, ask me to go into the garage area and look at the car from underneath. They start banging on the tires, the muffler and say look nothing is loose and ask me what I would like to do, as if I would know what to look for under the car. I was told there is nothing they can do, I should go to another garage, maybe they can find the problem. This is now after a week trying to get the car fixed, and going back and forth to the store 4 times. So now, it is two months later, my car makes lots of noises from the back and sounds like something is going to brake off, especially when I go over speed bumps. Plus I noticed that when I make turns, the high pitched scraping sound is back. None of these noises were there before I brought the car to the Mavis (NTB). They are also not related to the reason the car had a problem in the first place, the water pump. Every day I drive the car and hear these noises makes me more unhappy with my service and that is not even counting the amount of money I paid for the service. The only reason I gave them 2 stars instead of 1 is because their manager John seems like a nice guy. He was friendly and he really tried to offer good customer service. However this is the separation between customer service and the actual work done on the vehicle. They are very nice people, but the work that was done leaves a lot to be desired. read more

I got brakes serviced on my 2012 Honda Accord at NTB. My daughter picked up the car, and after a few miles it started to make some noise. She was going to drive from Boston to Providence, RI that night, but instead because of the loud noise, we took at to a mechanic that I've worked with for more than a decade. The mechanic said that the driver's side front caliper was loose because there was bolt missing. He also said that had my daughter driven the car that evening, there was a very good chance that the break would have failed, possibly resulting in a fatal accident. NTB would have easily noticed this issue had they simply driven the car around the block after servicing my car. I went back to NTB to bring up the issue, and Johny, the store manager, was very belligerent in his interactions with me. Not just unprofessional, but incredibly rude and nasty. I couldn't believe that someone who acts like that could be in charge of a store and customer interactions. One of the worst experiences I have ever had in a professional settings. The shop and waiting areas are huge so it is particularly good (for workers and customers) during COVID-times. I am in need of tire repair service and was dismal that they are listed as closed here; until i found out that they have changed corporate ownership to Mavis. IMPROPER VEHICLE REPAIRS BY NTB IN UNION CITY GA. I took my van to NTB in Union City GA. to see what was causing the brake light to come on. I specifically told them my concern was the break light. They told me they would inspect the brake system and tell me what it was. Later in the morning they came back and said I needed over $1500.00 of work done on the front brake system to fix the brake light issue. They said I needed new brake drums, calibers, brake pads, system flush.... Because the brake light was coming on before I went to them, I had replaced my front pads myself a few months before and didn't see any problems with the brake assemblies when I checked them myself. I reluctantly agreed to NTB agreement and signed to begin work. When they finished all the work they told me to pay. I did and left the office. I crank the truck and the light came on in the parking lot. I called complaining and they said they could not get the light to go off and I should call Ford. I told them they charged me and the issue was still there and I wanted it fixed. They took it back in the next day and said they would replaced the master cylinder. But, the light was still coming on afterwards and they said they was not going to do anything else. I called NTB Customer service and was assigned Mrs. Lane-Walker and was told to take the truck to Ford, have it inspected to verify the brake light cause and the issue would be settled. I took it to Ford and they said it was a electrical issue and fixed it for $198.00. Ford also said the front wheel bearings were damaged and needed replacement another cost of around $400.00. After sending Fords information over to Mrs. Lane-Walker at NTB customer service, she began to dispute Fords finding, criticizing the written estimate and saying NTB did nothing wrong. NTB failed to identify the real cause of the brake light issue, repaired and replaced the wrong components and is not taking responsibility. I have used them in the past and gave a five star review (when they were still National Tire: looks like they have gone downhill since Mavis). My car had an issue this weekend. I called about 8am this morning and they said come right down to Newton. I get there, the place is closed and dark and locked. Other customers with appointments were waiting and giving up. I called several times, and they said they would look into it. I got disconnected twice trying to talk to customer service. They finally admitted opening would be delayed but could not tell me when. They finally said 11am. Meanwhile the website still says opening at 8am. It turns out when you call, you go to a call center (even though they answer as Newton), and are not talking to people at the actual branch. I was also told the opening was delayed due to weather: however, the storm ended Sat at 7pm and the weather is fine. My main anger is that I called for an appointment and was sent to a closed shop. My car is being fixed elsewhere. I will not use Mavis again. Update. My car was fixed in less than an hour someplace else for no charge and no appointment. This, while Mavis could not even open. Also, one of the Mavis employees said they would call me back. They never did. Never got the callback promised even after a day. read more

This place is a dump....trash all over the ground as you walk in and inside is not much better. Went in for there 29 dollar oil change and walked out paying 60 bucks, oil removal, extra oil, new sneakers for the oil changer...HOOD had hand prints all over it..., they just do not give a ...much... about clean, so if this is the place you wish to go to...I recommend it. Myself I will go to Firestone, or Sullivan, or the dealer. Same price I am sure when you drive out. Attitudes in customer service guys to....makes you feel that you were interrupting there quality time. Can I help you...means WTF did you come in here and bother me. Whatever you do, Do Not take your car to Mavis Tires & Brakes in Newton Ma. Every aspect of dealing with them has been horrible. Their quality of parts, their workmanship, their value, and their customer service have been horrendous. I went to Mavis to purchase two front tires. I was upsold to four tires and a strut replacement (both of which it turns out I did not need) My bill had more than quadrupled, requiring two visits of more than 3 hours each. and at that point I was okay. The following week a new noise developed and then my new tire went flat. I purchased fix a flat - pumped it up with air and went back to Mavis for review. Again, several hours later they fixed the tire - it had a faulty valve - and they charged me for a new valve and a rotation because I did not purchase the tires extended warranty. It was a week old and was their defective part. Worse yet after three hours of waiting they told me they could not check the new noise because they were understaffed. I came back a week later only to be told that the entire staff had moved to another facility because they had many complaints. Then, after sitting there for two and a half hours I inquired on the status and no one had even looked at my car. Finally, the 'mechanic" wanted to show me the problem....BUT, it wasn't my car that he showed me. An hour later they told me the good news is they did actually replace the strut, but, the bad news was the part they used was defective and they did not have the part in stock. They informed me they would get the part and call me the next day. No one ever called. Three days later I called them and left a message - no one called back. Then the next day I called again. The individual I spoke to Frans (who had a worse attitude than I did at this point) said the store manager was at lunch and she would call me shortly. Franz refused to give me her name. Four hours later, I called them again. This time I asked for the Store Manager and Franz told me he was the Store Manager. Then he clarified saying he was the Assistant Store Manger and "I had to be patient and she would call me when she could". Its the next day and still no call.... THE BOTTOM LINE This place virtually stole hundreds of dollars from me by upselling something that was not needed, by very poor quality workmanship, by installing second hand/defective parts , by providing no warranty of their service, and most of all by providing horrendous Customer Service. To all perspective Mavis customers - do yourself a favor go somewhere else. I am now escalating this to their corporate trying to get my money back which I realize probably will not work. This is a terrible operation. It is no longer an NTB - they were bought out by Mavis Tires in early 2020. I used to totally trust the crew at NTB Newton, especially Giovanni and Jay. Those guys are gone. When I went in this past November to have my winter tires mounted and an alignment performed under the 3 year alignment plan that I had previously purchased, I was informed that they (Mavis Tires) would no longer honor any alignment programs previously purchased by NTB customers. When Mavis bought NTB, they bought all the existing liabilities and contracts of NTB, so this policy is both unethical and probably illegal (the MA Attoney General would probably be very interseted in looking into this fraud). Additionally, they tried to charge me some CRAZY price to mount my snow tires, approxiately twice what NTB used to charge. We finally agreed to a price that was more in line with what NTB had previously charged for this service. When I went to pick up the car, they told me that I also needed a new battery. I informed them that my Ford dealer has just installed a brand new battery the previous week! They looked sheepish and quickly dropped the subject. Again, more fraud. (Just to make sure, I went back to my Ford dealer and they confirmed the battery was new and in excellent condition). To make matters worse....I noticed that the car had not been performing well in snow and ice while driving in Vermont this winter. After taking a good look at all the tires, I realized that Mavis had incorrectly installed one of the front tires. Basically, they ignored the rotational arrow on the sidewall of the tire and installed the tire backwards, with the tread pattern facing the wrong direction. That explains the bad peformance in ice and snow this winter. They probabaly also decreased the lifespan of that tire and possibly made the car dangerous to drive. At least they quickly re-mounted the tire free of charge when I brought it to their attention today. However, they did not apologize, let alone offer me a refund of their incorrect mounting job last November. Needless to say, I'm never going back to this business. I'll be taking my future tire and alignment busines to VIP Tires and Service. You've been warned. read more

One think that most people don't know about NTB, they will beat a competitors lowest price by 10%. Also, if you need service they are usually the slowiest Tue and Wed. If you go any other day, expect to wait, they are the only full service tire, service, battery guys around that I trust and by the number of people in the waiting room I'm not the only one that feels this way. revised................... One of my tires had a slow leak. I've been through this many times--usually it's a bit of corrosion on the alloy rims. I dropped the wheel off at NTB Newton and asked them to remount the tire after cleaning things up. They called back and gave me a story about there being "bad rubber" inside the tire and they would not repair it. And they told me the brand of tire was no longer sold, so I would need a full set of new tires so that they would match. I looked up the exact model of tire on the web and multiple sources are still selling it. I went back and picked up the tire. It was on the rim, but not seated, so I could not see this "bad rubber" but neither could I use the wheel. I brought it to Direct Tire in Watertown and they fixed it and all is well. This was not the first time they gave me the runaround at NTB in Newton. Beware. Edit: (November 2012.) My son needed a new battery in a hurry. Forgetting that I had sworn off this place, I sent him to get the battery there, figuring "how could they mess that up?". Well somehow they tacked on an $89 charge for "Power steering fluid change". This is NOT a procedure that is recommended in the manufacturer's schedule of maintenance for this car, and is widely considered to be a bogus money-making procedure. Meanwhile, they FAILED to notice that the brake fluid was low, so clearly their attention to the power steering fluid was not part of an overall safety check I guess I need to explain the facts of life about NTB and their ilk to my son. :-) Beware of NTB in Newton. Edit again (June 2016): I had a flat and the nearby Mobile said they could not put a plug in it because the nail went into the sidewall. Needed a new tire. I live right near this NTB, and I'm lazy and obviously not a fast learner, so against my better judgment I went back. I brought the wheel to NTB (i AM smart enough to not let them put the wheel back on my car and tighten it so much that you need a 6 foot wrench to get it off). They put on a new tire. Great, how can they screw that up.?Well they did not balance it. I guess I needed to tell them BALANCE THE WHEEL after you put a new tire on it. So next time I'm on the highway it's a vibrating mess. While it's been largely bereft of significant problems over eight years, my car goes through tires like crazy. Actually so does my bike. So maybe it's me, not the vehicles in question. At any rate, since i've lived in two places that are walking distance away from this NTB, i've been there probably six times. i don't know much about tires or cars, really, but i've never found the cost to be exorbitant, and the service is always very quick, even when they're very busy (which they almost always are). Of course, maybe it wouldn't seem so quick if i had to wait there, since i just walk home. At any rate, the employees are polite, thorough, and patient (especially considering how swamped they seem to be). I've usually work on my car for basic maintenance and only go to a shop when it's something too big for me to handle. I have a BMW 540i that I'm very finnicky about and have brought my car to multiple shops for alignments because the alignments were always sloppy, including the dealership. I bought a alignment from NTB last year that came with 3 years of coverage and the alignment came out acceptable enough for me to drive on. After a year of Boston potholes, I brought my car into NTB again for another alignment and I was impressed at the alignment spec sheet. The tech, Raymond, actually aligned my wheels symmetrically on both sides of the car (usually, techs just align it so that each wheel is in spec). I knew this was a tech that took pride in what he did but I was SHOCKED pulling out of the lot. My car drives better than when I first bought it 2 years ago. Props to Raymond for the spectacular alignment and thank you Dave for the great customer service! read more

STAY AWAY!!! Went in for tires and an alignment, told me that my tie rods were seized and weren't able to do the alignment and was going to cost $400 to fix them. I said no, went to my local trusted mechanic and he said the tie rods were fine and were not seized at all. Went back to NTB, Told them the tie rods were fixed and they proceeded to do the alignment no problem at all and never said anything about the tire rods being seized. I was told by my local mechanic that the mechanics at NTB get commissions for finding extra problems with your car, do not go here, This place is a scam! These people are criminals! read more

I need to resolve some issues with NTB because I had bought the tire installation to give me free lifetime rotation and balance. I didn't realize that NTB in our area got sold to Mavis Tires. Was disappointed that Mavis won't be able to honor that agreement (we plan to take this up with NTB national), but I really appreciated Olivia and the store manager for giving me a free rotation today. I came over here yesterday to get a new tire. like a total moron i blew out my rear tire, and like an even bigger idiot i don't have the "key" to get the wheel locks off my tires. awesome! after a horrific morning dealing with AAA (3 hours later...) I was towed to NTB where they let me buy only 1 new tire (my honda dealer kept telling me i needed 2 new ones for $200 and i wasn't buying it). the store manager Jay was great to work with though he tried to upgrade me to some crazy $23 dollar tire service charge when there is a perfectly reasonable $11 dollar service. when i requested the latter he was quick to accommodate. I don't think changing a tire should have taken over an hour, but at that point it was a drop in the bucket of hours wasted so i didn't get riled up about it. 1 new tire, everything included came to $81 and I'm glad I spent it at NTB instead of the dealer. read more

Prompt, quick service. My boyfriend's tire got punctured last weekend and he had no time to fix it. And the tire shop near his office is always swamped when he calls. So I looked this place up through Yelp and gave 'em a call. Turns out they were having a slow day, so I brought it in and they fixed me right up. Tires = a little more expensive than I thought, but it might just be my bf's car, which is relatively new. No pressure or upsells on other products though, so that's nice. read more

I waited 5.5 hrs to swap my snow tires and adjust my alignment. Then they charged my $75 for the work even though I bought the tires at the same store under the name NBT last year and they included tire rotation for free. They said the balance the tires. Tires do not need to be balanced that often! They could have just put the new snow tires on! They also did not apparently adjust the pressure in the tires as far as I can tell as they register 6 lbs under what they should. Employees are nice but waiting such a long time is and paying for something that should be free is a problem! read more

Bought a set of new tires. Checked the pressure on them myself and it was 25 psi instead of 33 (as recommended by manufacturer). Called them and apparently their pump was "off by a bit". The manager was very apologetic and ended up giving me a free oil change to make up for the tire pressure mixup. I don't understand how a tire shop can mess up something like inflating tires, luckily I never trust mechanics and checked it myself. They also left a bit of dirt from the shop on my driver's seat, apparently they don't use seat covers when they move your car. Despite the attempted correction, I don't think I'll go back and use the free voucher. Not worth the risk to save $30 or whatever. At least the thought was there, so it would appear they are at least trying to improve their customer service. I'm just hoping the new brakes they put on for me work :) read more

I came here because it was located conveniently. I needed a new tie rod and control arm on the front passenger side in order to pass state inspection. They had the nerve to tell me that this would cost $997. I knew that this was vastly overpriced just from a simple Google search. Luckily a friend was able to recommend his trusted mechanic who was able to do the repair for $400! They did a good job and I was able to get my car inspected and passed. If you can avoid it, do not go to this chain for Repairs. YOU CAN GET IT CHEAPER. I learned that this week. read more

I drop my car off Saturday morning 9:30 am to have new tires put on mu car and was told it would be ready by the end of the day. I go home and 1 hour 10:30AM later get a call from NTB that the car is up on the lifts and that I need front and rear brakes. I declined because I didn't need new brakes. I call back at 3PM to check on the car and they tell me that they are working on it now and it would be ready in 30 minutes. There was noway they had inspected my car for brakes at 11aM and then didn't change the tires at that time.. What a dishonest operation... beware!! read more

I have two cars at home. Less than 6 months ago, I bought 4 brand new ties from this location for the car that gets only about 6,000 miles a year. At the time the manager told me "when you buy four tires from us, we will give you free tire rotation with your $19.95 oil change". I took the car in today for an oil change and the "free" tire rotation. But they told me one of the tires is off a little bit so if I want a rotation I have to get an alignment which obviously is not free. This company has a culture of misrepresentation and bait abs switch. I will never go there and will tell everyone about them. read more

I chose NTB, Newton, to install my tires I bought from Tirerack.com because they were the cheapest. - I brought the car in at 5:10pm on Wednesday 12/16/2009. There was 1 customer waiting in the waiting area. I got my keys back at 8:15pm. The only good thing about the experience was that my tires were done cheap. The moment I walked in one of the managers was sitting on/in my 4 stack of tires that had just been shipped (Unprofessional I thought). Meanwhile the man at the front desk was being bombarded with phone calls, and some how remained calm. My keys were taken and I sought to kill an hour or so at the local Starbucks. When I returned I could see my car on the lift, but no work had been done. I ended up waiting over 90 minutes more before my car was returned. While I was waiting I talked with a woman who also was restlessly waiting for her car to be done. It turned out that she came in the week prior to have 4 new tires put on her daughter's car. When she returned home her husband noticed that the center wheel caps were missing along with 2 lug nuts. When they came back to resolve the mishap, NTB offered her a free oil change for the "inconvenience". Now she had returned for that oil change and ended up waiting the 90 minutes with me. I change my own oil and can do it in 15 minutes. The last time I had tires mounted and balanced on my vehicle I had it done at Sears Auto Center- they did a good job in under an hour. Had I known that I was going to loose my evening waiting for my tires to be installed I would have planned to leave my car all day. Had I known that they forgot to put lug nuts back on a wheel, I would have taken my business some place else. Use caution with this place. They don't practice good customer service and their employees don't look happy - Poorly understaffed. read more

Thieves. Do not go here. They will try to rip you off by selling services that you don't need on parts of your car you never asked them to look at. When I declined the additional service they refused to do the work I asked for and started yelling at me to leave. read more
