The cutest shop! Came with my daughter for dinner. Lots of sandwich and drink options. The staff was so kind and welcoming. I got the Reuben which was outstanding!!! I've tried to give Maxey's in Powhatan every chance. I live nearby and genuinely like supporting local small businesses, so I've gone back five or six times hoping it would improve. Unfortunately, every single visit has been disappointing, and today was the last straw. The food has consistently been bad, buns and bread falling apart, food either cold or burnt, and sloppy enough that it literally drips all over you. Today I waited nearly half an hour in what felt like a total circus inside the restaurant, only to be served one of the worst meals I've had anywhere. The fried chicken sandwich was burnt to a crisp, honestly something that should have gone straight in the trash instead of being served. The fries were colder than ice cubes, like they'd been sitting out forever. I've tried their regular menu and even gone on some of their special food nights that get hyped up locally, but it never lives up to the hype. No matter when I've gone, the experience ends up being the same: long waits, chaotic service, and food that just doesn't deliver. For what they charge, the quality is completely unacceptable. I kept giving this place another chance because it's local, but after five or six attempts, it's clear the same problems keep showing up with no sign of improvement. What makes it even more frustrating is that it feels like the owners want to buy up half the town and run multiple places, yet this one clearly isn't being run well at all. Maybe focus on doing one restaurant right before expanding. Because right now, the basics, food quality, consistency, and organization, simply aren't there. At this point you'll get a better meal and better value at McDonald's, which honestly says a lot. I was only able to manage to eat about half of what I ordered, and honestly I only ate that because I was absolutely starving and hadn't eaten anything all day. I really did try to support this place. I gave it chance after chance. But after today, I'm done. This was my last visit and it will be the last meal I ever have there. read more

Dined in for lunch on a Thursday afternoon (party of 2) after hearing about it a few times over the past week. We placed our orders at the counter and the cashier was very pleasant and helpful. I had the double smash burger and bacon and it was delicious. It was cooked perfectly. My friend ordered the Rachel (swapped coleslaw for sauerkraut) which she enjoyed. Our french fries didn't appear fresh as they weren't hot. The indoor seating is kind of limited but all food is packaged to go and they even have premade items. The store itself is beautifully organized. We walked through and saw a lot of products local to the county and state of Virginia. I'd absolutely return for another lunch and to shop! read more

Just a gem of a spot where you least expect it. Local products and great food all under one roof. The smash burger is amazing and the reuben even better. The beers and other beverages were great, and the products all throughout the store were not only cute but led to an adorable Rural Virginia ambiance. Heard a lot about this place and decided to try it out. In Powhatan central, it is both a store and a sandwich shoppe. I got the turkey pesto sandwich. It was a good sandwich, although not sure it was worth the price I paid for it. Sandwiches come with nothing on the side - a la cart options of chips, fries, potato salad and onion rings available. My friend had a salad (prepackaged) and some chicken salad to add protein. Open floor plan with limited seating outside (cafe tables and picnic tables) and inside both downstairs and upstairs. We went to Marie's Saturday at around 6:25. My nephew walked in about 2 minutes before us and ordered his food and then we walked in and got behind him in line to order. The girl at the register said we can't order they're closing at 7pm. I said he just ordered and we were standing right behind him and she said sorry. WTF we weren't eating it there so why couldn't you make 2 more burgers? There were probably 10-12 people sitting down eating and we wanted ours to go. My son and I ate lunch at Maxeys. He had the double smash burger and I had the Reuben. We split some onion rings (that were great). We ate upstairs as it was busy down stairs. Both sandwiches were good, the pastrami on the Reuben was excellent. They seem focused on quality verse lower cost/value. Very nice place for a lunch in Powhatan! read more

Great atmosphere, comforable seating inside and out, and cool pictures of the original store along the walls. Very friendly. Enjoyed a generous cup of Richlands coffee oreo ice cream and purchased a delicious slice of chocolate cake roll for later. Great wine selection, fresh watermelon slices and enticing deli foods (crab cakes, sandwiches...). Glad the old store was remodeled and definitely worth a visit. Plus great historic building around the town to see as you walk off the ice cream. read more

Maxeys is such a great establishment. I love their black bean burger and their dill potato salad...delicious. The butcher selections are top notch. It can get busy during lunch but I usually sneak upstairs away from the noise. Can't say enough good about maxeys. Great to have them in our community. read more

Enjoy the food there. The menu is very limited for me since they took off the chicken salad dish. Not a big fan of the other things Hamburger is good and they do have really good onion rings as long as they are cooked fresh. Last time they must of been sitting because they were very soggy. Maxey's is a fabulous spot in the village of Powhatan. It's a restored building embodying charm and history. The owner has curated a lovely blend of fresh meats, seafood, wines, cheeses, Kombucha, etc etc etc. There is plentiful seating both inside and outside and it's nice enough, without being pretentious, that I would feel as comfortable there for a date night as I would eating with my children. All the dishes I've tried have been top notch. The soups are rich and decadent, the ingredients fresh and tasty. The owner is helpful and approachable, making great suggestions on food and the suppliers. You can't go wrong with Maxey's, be sure to give it a try. read more

I went to Maxey's last night for supper and ordered their smash burger. It was wonderful. It was the greatest burger that I have had in a long time. What a nice hidden gem. The Gentleman who waited on me along with the young girl who was assisting at the counter acknowledged me immediately. I will be bringing my family along with my out of town friends there.
