Cute place on Park Ave! I went for a facial, which is not something I do regularly. I was greeted upon arrival by the staff. Georgia was my facial expert! She walked me through everything she was doing to my face from the cleansing to the exfoliating to the blackhead removal. She honored a silent appointment which allowed me to relax and actually fall asleep! The hour went by so fast! As someone who is NOT great about keeping up on haircuts, manis, etc - I was absolutely thrilled when I discovered Maxim. I have utilized the salon for their porch pedicure, blow outs, and the walk-in cut & blow dry deal. Here are some highlights: 1) Great rewards program! I love that they track your services and offer real, substantial (hello spa mani!) rewards for being a loyal customer. 2) The affordability of the services offered is the main reason I keep coming back. I know it's risky to do a walk-in haircut, but every stylist I have worked with has done beautiful work. I have gone to other salons and paid upwards of $100 for a cut and dry - only for them to not measure up to the quality I get at Maxim for $15 (before tip). 3) Location! Treat. Yo. Self. to a porch pedi with wine this summer then bop over to any of the 10 nearby/walkable Park Ave restaurant for lunch. I indulged in that routine this summer and it was *wonderful* Parking on Park Ave can be a pain, but there's typically street parking on that stretch, so long as it's not a dinner rush or a sunny weekend day. I had the urge to chop off many inches of hair and this salon supported my decision. They had an appointment for my sudden desire to shed a few pounds of hair--and were enthusiastic in guiding me to the right length and style. I easily found street parking for a quick walk to the shop--cute and small. They have options for manicure, pedicure and spa services as well--my stylist was named Ashley and she was kind and did a great job. They were also taking walk-ins from what I could see. Unexperienced staff members.. honestly could've done their services myself. Nail techs don't even fully service hands or feet, blotchy nail polish, didn't even clean up the cuticles. The lady that I had said she didn't eat in 2 days like it's my problem when im there to relax. I couldn't even get through what I wanted for myself because it was frustrating at how unprofessional the staff here was. I even tried to give them the benefit of the doubt because of the previous reviews I read prior to coming here but nope all the 1 stars are true. 100% would not recommend coming here if you're trying to pamper yourself.. My daughter had her nails done at the salon. The website clearly shows the price for the nails and removal of $75. So we booked it However when the service was complete the total was $120 * The explanation i was told was the website is "under reconstruction " and the price at the desk is different. No where on the website does it say that and regardless you honor the price you put out there when people are booking online appointments which they would not. I went in for a spa pedicure which was suppose to be an hour. The whole service lasted maybe 30 minutes. The girl who did my pedicure can't be very experienced. It was suppose to come with a massage and all I got was her barely rubbing my feet and calf area. It was not even close to being worth the money. No way I will ever go there again. Had such a great time getting a mini manicure with my kiddo! Booking was easy, staff were really friendly, from the front test to the experts doing our nails, and the space was warm and inviting. They have a point system where you can get free services from earning points by referring customers, checking in on Yelp or Facebook, or booking services. The polish options are more extensive for gel than standard polish, but we each found a color we loved (lots of blues and greens for kids!). We had a lovely time and will be back. read more

I've been here twice but only once for services... One time I saw the outdoor sign for "Walk in's Welcome" problem was I just wanted a blowout right than but they couldn't I had to wait for three hours.. um no.. sorry not interested I was in the area and I was not gonna come back. Than I filled out my form, had my water and waited a few minutes. I must have been in a haze as some one said "Jenny" I think I may have been surprised or something as I swear I did not get her name. Our first meeting was slightly awkward than as I was getting shampooed and I seemed to relax. Due to the fact I have super blonde hair it seemed like I was washed (my hair) about four times. Yes I'm sure she used a toning shampoo or whatever it was nice and I was relaxed. As others have said it's a nice little place no pretentious attitude. My stylist was Lenzie she was lovely and did a nice job doing my blowout. But my bad I should have said "I'd like my hair to look like this. That's on me, she just asked me where I parted my hair. I wished I said something my hair looks fabulous and sleek but I wanted more umph. Like I said that's on me! I asked for her card I get $5 off my next service & $10 off a color. That's cool, I'll keep her in mind for another blowout and I'll speak up about what I want. My blowout was $35 not bad but I have short hair? Whatever, but the real test of a stylist is doing a blowout if they can't do that well that can't do your cut or color well. Just a tip from me. Give them a shot, I'll be back. DONT COME HERE. These people are awful. I got sick with Covid Tues/wed and had to cancel my Saturday July 6th appointment. Missed work of course bc of it. Tried to cancel within 48 hr via email, but it was 4th of July holiday (they were closed) two days before my appt. I called the next morning when they opening Friday July 5th to cancel and they charged me $175!! I understand charging $20-$50 for lost time/business for late cancellation, but seriously? The full price of the appointment? And i just didn't want to spread Covid. Times are tough and this just really hurt my bank account. I wanted to get my nails done bc I haven't been able to in months, and if I liked the people I was going to get a haircut here too since it's an all in once salon. Definitely not anymore. I went in over a month ago to have my hair styled for event. The stylist was new and seemed confident. I showed a picture of what I wanted. They were curls that would be done with a wand, so they would be big and wavy. What I got were curls that started half way down my head and were done with a curling iron and attempted to be brushed out. There was so much product in my hair, my hair barely moved. I was rushing for the event so I didn't have time for them to re wash and do my hair. I had to go home and wash it quick myself and quickly do a style to make it to a work event. I was charged $50 for a service I hated. I have reached out MULTIPLE times now about this and to get a refund but no one seems to have the respect or time to answer an unhappy customer. When the same thing happens at a Spa, you are starting to figure things out - life balance. No, I am not a Maxim Platinum Elite, but I visit pretty often (Shhhh,..). I like the character of Maxim and Park Ave in general. There is nothing pretentious about it. No haute folks to stare, no marble floors and no sissy slippers and robes required. It's kinda cozy and I like the old house feel. Most importantly, I like the Maxim staff. All are professional, knowledgeable and friendly. And for services, one of the best massage professionals in the area works at Maxim. The Estheticians are also excellent. Predictable, Repeatable, and No surprises is what I like. I used to go to this salon back when I was in college, and on a recent trip to Rochester, I decided to stop in for an "emergency" manicure and pedicure. It had been a few years since my last visit, but I was pleasantly surprised when they still had my name in the system and they treated me with excellent service. They were pretty busy (it was a Friday afternoon), but they managed to help me out. I only had to wait in the seating area for a few minutes, but they offered me wine, water or coffee in the meantime. The esthetician that took care of me was very friendly and gentle. One of my toenails recently fell of, but she didn't act grossed out or anything. Instead she asked about it and was extra careful. Yay! They don't have nail dryers (that I'm aware of), but who's in a rush to leave! I'll definitely try to visit Maxim the next time I'm in town. P.S. They do great waxing too! read more

I am giving them a one star review because I was not giving a reminder for an appointment made over two months ago and when I did not make it to my appointment (because I am human and forgot) I was charged $260. They would not allow me to reschedule without the fee and processed my card without acknowledging the fee or informing me they would be charging me at all for the mix up. They aren't fancy, which some people like. They do offer a ton of services though which I would be willing to go back to try. Went for a pedi from a gift card I rec'd and Tatyana did a wonderful job and was very friendly, however, the salon was not informed I had gel polish and emailed me 3+ hours after my service to ask if they can charge my card for the difference and did not even mention what that difference was! The thing about student deals is they are wonderful as long as you're getting a quality product at the end. I didn't feel like that was the case after my hair cut at Maxim. My roommate had told me they did $15 hair cuts for students which seemed really appealing as I usually spend around $70 when I go back home on Long island. Appointments are on a walk in basis and around 4:00 on a Tuesday I had no problems getting right in. In fact, the entire salon was empty. The woman cutting my hair was sweet as could be, very sociable but unless I'm getting a good hair cut, kindness really doesn't mean too much to me. I said I wanted very little cut and that I was in the process of growing my hair out and just wanted to get rid of the dead ends. My hairdresser seemed to understand exactly what I was asking, even went as far as to say, "The only way to get your hair to get long and strong is to come in every 5 weeks for a trim." Well that wasn't happening, but I knew she got the idea of what I wanted. She started looking at my hair and used the comb to measure and wasn't cutting anything. LITERALLY didn't make one cut. She kept combing it, looking at it and then going to another section of my hair. At one point she actually said out loud, "I feel like I'm not cutting anything!" Yeah, it's because you aren't. She trimmed my "bangs" and that was it. There was nothing on the floor. I couldn't believe it. I got home and my hair was FULL of broken dead ends. My bangs looked great and everything else looked dead and in need of a cut. In a situation like this, I would rather spend more money to get a quality cut. read more

I really like Maxim for its Gelish nail manicures. Gelish is similar to Shellac, in that it's "set" by a light (LED instead of Shellac's UV), and the polish stays on your nails for 2-3 weeks. This isn't a super regular pampering for me, but before a special event it's a great way to treat yourself! The salon itself is in a big 'ol house on Park Ave and has a very Martha's Vineyard style about it - large porch, hardwood floors, homey atmosphere. It's not city-chic and there's something so appealing and comfortable about it. They even do pedicures out on the porch! The girls are super friendly and the manicure is $35. When you want to swap out colors a few weeks on, it's $20. If you're thinking about nails this summer, Maxim is a great choice. read more

So Im traveling cross country and platinum blonde super short pixie had grown out intolerably. I make a miraculous last-minute appointment with Jennee (pronounced Zjen-AY, not Jenny --for when you call to request her, because trust me, you want to). When your hair is as short as mine, and you need that bleach and heat so close to the skin, you expect a certain amount of blistering and burning. But I didn't get that with her because she had a trick up her sleeve to reduce it. My cut and color were exactly what I wanted - which is pretty amazing since she didn't know my hair and had never cut or colored me before. My go-to spot when my hands need attention! Stephanie is a magician with the gel polish. She always gets close to the cuticle, so there is minimal gap between the polish and the cuticle and you don't leave with what looks like a week's worth of growth. She helped me find my favorite nude combo shade, and turns my ragged cuticles into a thing of beauty. And for $20 for just the gel polish, it's reasonable to go in every few weeks to have the color changed. The space is pretty basic, but very comforting and welcoming. They've turned an old house on Park Ave into a salon I can walk to, and for that I am grateful (and so are my hands)! read more

In my opinion, my hair stylist had the perfect amount of chatty - not too intrusive but very talkative and able to have a good conversation. What a great first experience! I was in desperate need for a haircut and a friend told me about their discount walk-in cuts for $15 for students (only $18 for non-students). I decided to try it out since it was such a great deal and there was nothing to loose really! I went on an afternoon during the week so I was immediately paired with Andrea. She was SUPER sweet and really listened to what I was looking for before getting started. I truly trusted her after our chat and felt 100% comfortable with whatever she suggested to make it look best. The cut came out amazing and I opted to get a blowout for an extra $10. In my entire life, Andrea is the first stylist to actually blow out my hair in a way that I like! She finished it off with some texturing and a little bit of straightening - which I almost always go home and do myself after a cut. Besides the service itself, the ambiance of the salon is very welcoming. It's quaint and relatively small, but this encourages all the employees and customers to chat together. In town for a few weeks for work...a very physical job. I made an appointment with a massage therapist I found on yelp and the dude totally flaked and was a no show. With very little time to get work done, I went on here and found Laura who works at Maxim. Holy crap is she awesome. I live in NYC and get massages all the time...if I could bring her back with me I would. She focused on the areas I requested and was professional, down to earth and very easy to communicate with when I felt like communicating.
