First experience eating Filipino food, with the exception of lumpias at a potluck before. My boss, who is Filipino, does an annual Christmas lunch and usually picks Filipino food. Parking was easy as it was a lot with valet. We had a group table and my boss just ordered a few popular dishes and we all shared. I got the Calamanis Juice, which is a Philippine Lime juice. It was good but pretty sweet. The table shared the famous fried chicken, fried pork, fried fish (lotsa fried foods), fried lumpia as well as two soups, one peanut based and the other tamarind - which was good but sour and rice as a base. Overall the food was delicious and unhealthy and the service was good. We shared a few desserts as well - good but very sweet! They have a lot of Filipino pride as shown in the decor. Max's Fried Chicken and other Filipino dishes are consistently excellent. But the Glendale restaurant is a class on its own for its highly trained staff who have mostly been around for decades. Service is always cordial, efficient and with the Filipino hospitality vibe. The restaurant has undergone renovation and the dining area got bigger by getting rid of the bar/karaoke corner. What I like about Max's is their ability to showcase Filipino food to America. Of course the quality and taste compared to the Philippines is different because of the ingredients' sources. It's like expecting Jollybee to taste the same here as in the motherland. Anyway, I feel they've "Westernized" the dishes so they aren't too salty, too fatty or too exotic of flavors. Some examples are the Kare Kare lacks peanut taste or the Nilaga lacks salt and beef flavor. This isn't bad per say but a Filipino/a who can cook this better at home (*ahem* mom) has much to say. Now I don't come here to eat Filipino food I can make at home. I'm usually here for a party, a family dinner with friends or I'm craving the one thing that reminds me of Max's from the Philippines...the taste of the Max's manok (chicken in Tagalog). It's definitely a go-to here. Try it with Jufran Banana Ketchup or some Mang Tomas sauce if you're new to it. Most of the menu here isn't too bad and is much better than Chow King or the fast food Filipino spots. It was pricey this time around probs inflation. Halo halo was friggin delicious in this heatwave too. Must try. They did some major renovations since the last time I was here. Now they have PLENTY of indoor seating with no outdoor seating. Parking is now valet only $5 (then again I went on a weekend). You can save $$ by parking across the street in the galleria parking lot. Finally stopped in a couple weeks ago on a Saturday for a late lunch. Place was busy but the staff were hustling to keep up and clean up. The Ambiance was a bit loud but it was tolerable. Parking is valet with a $5 service charge. We ordered the Bistek Tagalog, lumpia, garlic fried rice and lechon kawali. Everything was great except for the lumpia...it just had a weird after taste. I've definitely had better slams I'm a bit of a lumpia snob any way. Will definitely be back to try the sinigang as I heard it is good here. read more

Their signature Max's chicken is $22 and it's really tiny for its price. They are marked as whole chicken but it's really just spring chicken. All the other food such as sinigang, nilaga, and all that, comes in very small servings as well with a steep price. Never get the mango sticky rice, it doesnt take good, it's like someone played the menu. Also, server Rex is not cut out for the job or could be trained more to at least fake it. read more

We ordered the famous fried chicken, kare-kare and crispy pata and were not disappointed. It felt like we're transported back to Manila as they tasted exactly how they were served in the Philippines. The restaurant is conveniently located beside the famous Glendale Galleria and has its own parking space. On weekends you might want to come in early to get a slot but no need to reserve a table really. They welcome private parties which they cater in one big room. To be honest, I LOATHE to give any restaurant such a low rating, especially one that is from my home country. Max's had always held a nostalgic place in my foodie heart since first eating there back home in the Philippines when I was growing up. Part of me was very sad when one by one the SoCal branches started to close and only this one was left which is pretty far from where I live. My family and I arrived at 7:35pm after checking Yelp and the restaurant website that stated they closed at 9:00pm. On the door was a sign saying the same thing (See my Tip picture). There was PLENTY of time. So imagine my disbelief when the hostess turned us away because their last seating was 7:30pm. When I responded that their posted closing time wasn't until 9:00pm, she apologized but said that was their policy. ARE...YOU...KIDDING ME?! Again, NOWHERE was it posted that they had a "last seating" time. None on Yelp, their own website, not EVEN ON THE DOOR. I've been at high-end restaurants that have this policy but they make it very, very clear that they have one. I thought it was just us until three more parties came and were told the exact same thing. At this point I was quite hangry and it took all I had not to snap. I asked if the to-go orders are also closed and she replied that they could take the order. I really debated whether or not to just walk out but figured that we were already there. While I appreciated how fast our to-go orders came out, it made me more irate with the no-warning "last seating." If they can pump out orders that quickly then why the last seating with such a long span between 7:30pm and closing time of 9:00pm? We ordered the following: Steamed rice (large, $5.99) Garlic rice (2 large orders, $6.99) - The only item that was a value for the money Max's Fried Chicken (whole, $16.99) - The portion was incredibly disappointing for what you get. It looked only slightly larger than a cornish hen. No way would this scrawny chicken feed more than one person. Costco serves a larger chicken for 1/3rd the price. And where were the "banana ketchup and Worcester Sauce. Comes with French Fries" that their website mentions? Ours didn't come with any. Lechon Kawali Sisig (2 orders, $15.99 each) - Though this was actually my favorite and was very tasty, the portion was small for how much they're charging. There was almost an equal ratio of onions to the pork. The food was delicious (though overpriced for the portion you get) however it was overshadowed by restaurant policy that they are not even informing potential customers of. We did not order the fried chicken. What was I thinking? That's their specialty, and therein lies my biggest mistake. Instead, we ordered chicken adobo, beef caldereta, fresh lumpia and garlic rice. First off, the chicken adobo tasted old and dry--the sauce tasted like it was thickened with corn starch, meaning, not at all juicy like it should be. And it was lukewarm. The caldereta had a nice flavor, and that's about the only dish we enjoyed. The fresh lumpia was smothered with gravy, so it turned soggy. We ate half of it and wasted the rest. Meanwhile, the garlic rice, the most basic comfort food of Filipino culture, was a huge let down--mushy and so not fried as it should be. We finished off with halo-halo. I figured how could I go wrong with that. Thank god! Lastly, the service was very dismal--we were constantly hunting down our server. Luckily, the waiters are in generally good disposition--friendly and humble. And so at the end of the day, my take on it is, being a Sunday didn't help. They were packed and busy and discombobulated. I am disheartened--so let down by this once great brand. But like all other Filipinos, I will likely come back because it's what we do, as a community. We had our mom's 80th birthday party here, with a guest list of 40 people. Got a separate room, complete with a large TV and microphone. They have a party package that is per person and includes appetizer, drinks, dessert, chicken, pork, and pancit. I cannot thank our coordinator Maria enough for doing such an amazing job. She not only kept in touch with me during the planning phase but also served as the MC for the event, hosting the various games and introducing family members. She brought a tremendous amount of energy and was definitely one of the party's highlights. Several of our guests are already planning events with her. The food was tasty and came in large portions. Everyone was able to take home leftovers afterwards. Customer service was outstanding; they handled the numerous late arrivals we had without any issues. Parking is $5 for valet and we highly recommend you use it because that area of Glendale can get pretty busy. read more

This is several reviews put together into one. Max of over the years has changed drastically especially after the remodel but one thing remaIns the same is the food and service. The food in my opinion no matter which establishment you go to whether here in the states or in the Philippines food is always good. I think for the most part I tend too ok order the same things. On to the food. The crispy pata is always good, fresh hot and crispy add some vinegar and man do you have some delicious comfort food. Another popular in that always order is the crab fried rice, can't go wrong with this dish. The sisig is always onE of my favorites as well, some times it's a little a little more mushier than I like but the taste is always good. There are other dishes worth eating but I would say these are the top ones. Over all great comfort Filipino food. read more

Let me start my review by saying over all I give 3/5 stars the 4th star was bc of the halo halo special. If we didn't order that or if it was terrible I'd have put 3. I haven't had Max's since visiting the ph years ago in 2018 so I was especially excited to eat here because I had a good time eating at the one back home. We don't live nearby so it was a good 1 hour drive in traffic. It's a large restaurant space inside and the parking lot is alright. The servers were nice and had recommendations. The prices for the drinks such as the sago or calamansi juice were expensive for the small glass filled with mostly ice and no refill and they were okay at best. In my opinion, a canned soda might've been better. Starting off with the lumpia, it was not very flavorful and you could very well tell they're the frozen lumpias you can get from the Filipino grocery mart. They were crunchy and hot which made them tolerable but the inside was a soggy mess. Now I have words about the pancit palabok. I've had a LOT of different ones in my life and this was one of the worst. The red flags was the lumpia and pancit palabok came out within less than 10 minutes of ordering. That was too fast to be quality food. The noodles were undercooked, there was no meat and the sauce was not it. I don't know if I just hold pancit palabok to a higher standard bc I've had the best of the best home made by family members and by me. So for the insane price of the palabok, it did not live up to the hype. The kare kare was a good 8/10 but for the price they put like 5 small chunks of beef . Same with the pinakbet, mostly veggies so it was kind of a rip off. Personally the prices do not match the quality and taste writing . The Max's specialty which is the fried chicken was a 10/10. She was nice and crunchy and we ordered a whole chicken which made for leftovers. It's great with mang Tomas which for some reason is handed out in tiny plastic cups instead of a bottle just being left on the table like how the banana ketchup is. That's not a bad thing, just an observation and suggested improvement. If it wasn't for the chicken I would've really regret coming. Overall liked the kare kare, fried chicken, and halo halo. Next time I will give another chance to try other things like the crispy pata and other dishes. The halo halo was the star of the show, it's hard to mess up on something like that so ending with a nice halo halo for dessert sort of made up for it. Now listen- take my review with a grain of salt, some people will enjoy what I did not enjoy. We always order online because they won't allow phone orders it seems. When you call, the message will said to send you a link to order on line. People at the cashier are not very friendly and prompt when you pick up order. Repeatedly asking for you name, taking time to check but there were only 2 orders sat there. Max's has always been a nice place to go whenever I'm craving some good old fashioned filipino food. However, the prices and service has really gone down hill. Just to give an example, a bowl of Halo Halo is around $10. Keep in mind this consists of 1 scoop of ice-cream, and the rest is made up of some toppings and shaved ice. The service is also super slow. The servers were pleasent and friendly but it seemed to be 1 server for almost half the restaurant. I had to ask for refills on water several times before the server was able to get around to doing it. I also had to ask for sauce several times before the server got it. What can I say, after our pandemic hiatus from Max's the food still hits the spot! Late lunch and it was worth it! The newly renovated interior is brighter and modern. They basically scrubbed the 90s motif off of it lol. The weekend jumpin' karaoke bar is no more The humongous Max's history wallpaper is gone, and the wooden brown color scheme is now replaced with an eggshellish off-white color scheme in which natural light pings off it and makes the whole place actually light up. Clean, chill and delicious! Just check out the pictures of our order and believe me it taste twice as good as what you see! Anyhoo, we were just "galit-galit" when we got our order. I killed that outrageously delicious and crispy fried chicken along with pancit, garlic rice with healthy dabs of banana ketchup! To drive back and forth from the valley to Glendale is not worth! Max can keep the money! Please make sure to check your order before leaving, or just look for a different place to order your food. If I could give negative number I would. I ordered online for the convinience of picking it up and not to wait anymore. If my Dad is not begging me to have their pancit I would cancel my order altogether. I put in the order online at 1pm and it says ready to pick up in 30-45 minutes, arrived there 1:45pm only to find out they have not even put the order in. Legendary for its whole fried chicken that originated in Manila, Philippines. Fried Spring Chicken, flavorful, golden, crispy skin, well seasoned and moist all throughout, served with a side of banana ketchup. The sweet, spicy and tangy sauce compliments and balances it well. Shrimp (can be pork ribs or beef) "Sinigang" (sour soup base), a traditionally paired with a fried dish. Topped with blanched Asian green beans (sitaw), sliced daikon, & Anaheim chili. The soup base is suppose to wake up your appetite. We crush the Anaheim chili in a saucer filled with fish (patis) sauce and serves as a dip for the protein (shrimp, pork or beef) of choice. The sour taste is from either tamarind or lemon. In the Philippines, unripe tamarind is commonly used. The aroma of the soup brings back memories from my childhood. So comforting. Used to go there with my wife and son, but must be new ownership. Yesterday we went and they wanted 5 dollars for parking, "valet" lol who charges a customer for parking? The food was so salty I could not eat the Bistek which was $18.00. It had more onions than beef and the rice was not included.It was an additional $7.00 and was cold. My wife said the Daing na Bangus was ok but so salty. The only thing enjoyed was Halo Halo for my son and he eats anything. Needles to say after getting the bill of $99.00 I dont think I will ever coming back there. That $5.00 for parking could have gone to a nicer tip for the guy serving. John was good.
