I have been coming here since 1990, the service in the 90's-early-2000's was ok but this past year has been horrible and worst. Today was the worst experience I had in Max. We came at 11:04 am and ordered 4 different dishes for take out. Around 11:15-11:20 am, people started coming for dine in where I can see these seated customers across me where my mom and I were seated in the lobby for 1 hour already. I noticed the customers who came later started eating and only waited for their food for 15 minutes tops. We have been here over 1 hour and still waiting for our food! The front desk and this waiter guy about 18 years old chubby dude didn't even care after I complained and I asked why these customers just came and always got their food way before us. No one even fucking care after I already complained! We waited for our take Out for 1 hour and 15 minutes while the seated customers who just came and ordered their food here only Waited 20 minutes!!!!! We put our name on the waitlist in advance so when we got there we had no wait and were seated promptly. Valet parking for $5 in their parking lot is the easiest option. As much as I love this filipino restaurant as I am a Filipino myself, I regret to have this review but I think this is to teach this branch to have accountability and improve their cleanliness. We ate there on May 15, 2024 at around 4pm, family of 5. While dining in, we found a strand of metal inside the lumpiang ubod and told the server. He gave us a new one and we told him to just have it to go. I didnt make it a big deal as they apologized and gave another one. I checked right after we arrived home to make sure there's no metal, unfortunately this time we found a cockroach in the sause instead!!! I called them immediately to report, Donna answered and said to send an evidence, like a picture or video, which I did, then after that called them again and asked foe the manager, she said they don't have manager for already 2 weeks as he or she is on vacation. It is always enjoyable visiting the Americana at Brand in Glendale to see the grandeur of the dancing fountain and enjoy the beautiful outdoor type mall. It's always uplifting to see this spectacle of Xmas there too with its giant Xmas tree and lighting. So after a trip there we went out for dinner at Max's Restaurant for some good old fashioned Filipino cuisine. This is actually a very nice sit down Filipino restaurant, which is always better than the "turo-turo" joints which serve precooked dishes that you select from, cafeteria style. Here you order from a menu and the food is prepared fresh. We ordered a new dish Sizzling Tofu which we've never had, nor have we heard of this as a Filipino dish, so perhaps it's some newer fusion type dish? We ordered the more traditional dish called Sinigang na Baboy which is a sour soup of pork and vegetables, perfect for cold weather and highly recommended! And of course crispy pata which is a deep fried pork knuckle- the dish to order if you wish to indulge, but remember to do 2-3 days of cardio or weights after ‍. We also ordered garlic rice as Filipino food is best enjoyed with rice. Without rice is akin to eating a hamburger without the bun, which to me is a travesty! I haven't encountered any Filipino fusion type restaurants though I'm aware there are some. No matter, this cuisine is closer to the home cooked meal my parents and grandparents would have made. Consider it comfort food. Good for the soul. I give this restaurant a good 4 stars for food quality and ambience. Give this place a shot. Max's of Manila needs to work on a few things. We ordered the Sagot Gulaman, Chicharon Bulaklak, Half Max's Fried Chicken, Regular Steamed Jasmine Rice, and Kare-Kare. The Sagot Gulaman was not good. In my opinion it was overly sweet. It tastes like they put way too much vanilla extract in it. I thought the Chicharon Bulaklak was delicious. I love the crispy pork fat dipped in vinegar. The vinegar really cuts some of the fat and allows it to have a perfect balance. The Max's Fried Chicken was really good. The seasoning was delicious and added perfect flavor to the chicken. Though, I found the seasoning to be inconsistent. I would bite into one piece and have an explosion of salt in my mouth. Though, the other bites tasted good. Though another flaw is that the chicken is very dry. I recommend dipping it in banana ketchup or worcestershire sauce. The skin was very delicious and crispy. The fries that came with it were honestly disgusting. Not warm at all. It was more cold than warm. It was not crispy, and not flavorful at all. The Kare-Kare was very average, if not below average. I found it difficult to taste any of the peanut flavor in their kare-kare. It honestly tasted bland and lacked flavor. The texture of the sauce was good, but it needed more flavor. Now the meat was very well done. I believe they used oxtail. It is very tender and falls off the bone. They did a good cook on the meat for the kare-kare. The other veggies complimented the dish well. The bagoong brand they use is very good and pairs well with the kare-kare. The kare-kare needs more flavor. The rice was good, but it's hard to mess up rice. The quality of the food was really good. Mostly everything tasted fresh. I believe the sagot gulaman is premade. The only quality issue I have is with the fries. I'm not sure how long they were sitting in the kitchen for. They used quality ingredients for most of their dishes. The presentation came out mediocre. The sagot gulaman is very attractive to the eye. The chicharon was just scatted on the plate with a side of vinegar. The fried chicken was placed nicely, but with scattered fries. The kare-kare and steamed rice came in nice bowls. The portion to price I have an issue with. They do not give enough sagot gulaman for what they are charging. You can easily finish it quickly. In terms with the flavor of it, the sagot gulaman is not worth the price. On the other hand, the chicharon bulaklak is. They give a very large amount of chicharon for a fair price. I just wish they had a larger container for the vinegar. The size of the fried chicken was ok. They gave one piece of the two that seemed fairly small. The fries again are an issue with the portion. Looking at the picture, they barely give enough fries. Therefore the fries were cold, tasted gross, and were not given a big enough portion. They need to add more fries to the plate to make the price fair. The kare-kare I find expensive. Feeding one person with rice, it'll come to $23. I find that really expensive, not only because of it's small portion, but because it did not taste amazing. If they are charging that much for kare-kare it should be delicious, not bland. The rice is a fair price for its portion. The service I would say is kinda bad. Our server was nicer towards the end. Though, at the beginning he did not introduce himself and gave a notion as if he was impatient. He just came to our table and pretty much said "what will you have." Then after we placed our order he gave the common "by the way my name is... and I'll be taking care of you." He seemed very rushed for our table. We received our food at a fair time. We got our appetizer first, then the mains immediately followed within 5 minutes. The ambiance of the place is very nice. They have nice decor, and nice seating areas. The place was a little dirty. They need to sweep. The chairs and tables also need to be wiped down, there are stains on them. Parking is an issue and got me upset. It is valet only, and they charge $4. I hope I am not wrong, but I assume valet parks your car and also pulls it out when you leave. I made the mistake of self parking and then finding out it was valet only. I walked up to the booth to pay the $4 even though I self parked. The name of the valet service was I believe carlos valet service. I paid the $4 and tried handing the valet my keys so he can pull my car out after I finish dining. I figured if I'm paying for valet he should at least take my car out. He told me to keep my keys. I thought the point of valet was also to bring my car out, so it's easier for me to leave? So you're telling me I paid $4 just for the parking lot. I thought the $4 I paid for the valet was to park my car and take it out. I am confused on what I paid the valet $4 for. Not to mention he also seemed rude when he told me to keep my keys. Max's used to be pretty good. What happened ? Ordered for food to be delivered. Their "famous" chicken, some Kare Kare and garlic rice. What we got was some poor, small, not even sure you can call them chickens. The Kare Kare had a lot of sauce but very very little if anything else. To quote my Dad "The best part is the bagoong!" If this is the best of Max's Chicken, I'd suggest you remodel your menu now that you've remodeled your restaurant. Disappointed doesn't quite express the let down. Gave 2 stars for at least getting the food. Time to find a new Filipino place with real food. read more

I have to say... The reason this place really gets 4 stars is not just the food but the service. This place feels like home. My friend who invited (also Philippino) said the food here is "Philippino soul FOOD. And she wasn't lying. The beef soup was my favorite. You can order it with a fish instead. Everything about Max's is always consistently yummy! My family and I try not to go here on Sundays because of the long wait times, but an early Saturday afternoon or weeknight is a great time to go! Their customer service is 9/10 times great. Staff is friendly & authentic. Their fried chicken is obviously the winner here...so get it! Place was really loud inside. Definitely, the owners did the interior cheaply and did not incorporate sound attenuating panels. Food was not exceptional; just good enough. Smaller portions. Decline in quality over the last year. It just happens to be a Filipino institution that's why people come here. Service was acceptable but chinsy. Just giving you a little container of lechon sauce, or lumpia sauce, when this condiments are crucial to the dish. These are cheap stuff yet they're so cheap. Best would be put bottles of the stuff on the table to knock yourself out. Chinsy ways show it still hasn't adopted American ways of being a good restaurant. Please. Don't be cheap.
