Whenever I'm in the area, I think of heading to this spot. Max's is a Filipino restaurant that has always delivered in food tasting and quality, giving great reminiscence to the restaurant chain in the Philippines. This time around I came here with my girlfriend and there was a special for a new dessert they had!!! The ube leche flan shake was advertised and although the price is quite high for a drink ($9), it's no ordinary drink and is perfect to share between others!!! I loved the sweet pair together and enjoyed the texture differences between the leche flan and the smooth ube cream. Highly recommend!!! Other orders we got were the famous whole Max's fried chicken and the plate of lechon kawali (fried pork belly). They have a huge variety of dishes, including their world famous fried chicken which is juicy and crispy. I told them I was bringing them to a place where they can feel transported to another country with food that was going to tease, play and satisfy their palate. They have a good size parking lot. For Glendale where parking is a premium these days that's good. Service is on point. We were greeted immediately. Even though not all our party was present they showed us our table so we could start with some refreshments. When I looked at the menu, the higher pricing was a little surprising. Looking around at the setting it was lovely. I did feel like I was in a modern Filipino restaurant. My friends were pleased with that agreeing they felt transported. We started with the lumpia ubod which is heart of palm. You wouldn't think this to be such a delightful treat with the peanut dipping sauce. There's only 2 on a plate. We ordered 2 of these for our party of 5. I didn't eat one so they could all try it. The garlic rice came. It smelled divine. The chop suey of stir fried vegetables, pork, squid and chicken was savory and tasty. The rice soaked up the sauce lingering the taste and flavors in my mouth. Next up the pancit balabok was hit. They had noodles before but nothing like this. I had them squeeze some lemon and soy sauce to give it that extra kick into the next level. The kare kare, peanut stew pork, didn't go over well with everyone. They could eat it but it's not something they would order. Noted. For me I loved it. So I get to eat more of this than anything else. lol The crispi pata was a big hit. The price now for that is $30 but it seem like the portion was double the size. Max's of Manila in Glendale is just a staple, truly! If you know, you know - this place has, without a doubt, the best fried chicken I have ever had in my life. It's not breaded, just fried wonderfully, with so much amazing flavor. Add a little banana ketchup to that, and it's just delicious! This location is super spacious, with tons of room, but heads up: on Sundays and holidays, especially after church, it can get really packed. So, definitely try to check in on the Yelp waitlist before you arrive to snag your spot as soon as you get there. There's free parking across the street at the mall, or you can valet right at the restaurant. I highly, highly recommend the fried chicken, obviously! Also, definitely try the fish sisig, which is also known as bangus sisig. And you absolutely have to get loads and loads of fried garlic rice. My girlfriends and I decided to see each other after not seeing each other for a year and one suggested to eat lunch at Max's. We didn't have to wait since we got there early and they had a lot of vacant tables. We were told to add ourself to the waitlist which showed it was close to an hour wait. It didn't make any sense. We ordered: daing na bangus (fried milkfish), pork sinigang, crispy pata, calamares and of course their fried chicken. I got to taste all of it and they're all good in my opinion. I've been coming here with my family since I was a little girl. I remember loving this place so much because their chicken is so crispy and eating it with garlic rice and banana ketchup was even better. Back in the days, the wait would be up to an hour or more! The wait time has definitely lessened and unfortunately, the service, and quality of their food. The interior is very nice now that is newly remodeled. There is more open seating and the lights give it a much brighter ambiance. My family came here for my Dad's birthday and we ordered: fried chicken, shanghai lumpia, kare kare, pancit bihon, and garlic fried rice. My favorite Filipino dish is kare kare and it is delicious here to pair with the rice. Our chicken was very salty... we were not too happy about it so we told our server, and he was more than happy to replace it. It was still salty the second time around, but we kept it to eat. Although the food was kind of expensive, the portions were on the larger side. FOOD ORDERED - Chicharon Bulaklak ($11.99). I wasn't sure if I would like ruffle fat (membrane around intestine), but it didn't have an offensive flavor. It mostly offered texture. Deep fried without batter, the ruffles were shatteringly crisp. The circular black rim on each piece was chewy. I liked dipping each piece in vinegar and adding a drop of Tabasco. - Max's Half Fried Chicken ($14.99). The chicken skin was super crispy and the meat fell off the bone. However, the meat was dried out -- even the dark meat. The quality of the chicken also wasn't the best, as the texture of the meat was soft and lifeless. Adding palm vinegar from the chicharon bulaklak improved the taste. - Classic Pork Sisig ($14.99). The chopped head meat with onion was rich and tasty. Although the dish was already vinegary, a squeeze of lemon helped cut the fat. - Garlic Rice ($5.99). Max's garlic rice was light on the garlic and oil, so it didn't make me gassy. That's a plus. Unfortunately, the rice was too soft and clumpy for me. DESSERT ORDERED - Mango and Coconut Jelly in Cream ($7.50). Tasted AMAZING!!! The creamy coconut milk solidified into fine little beads from the cold vanilla ice cream, which enhanced the texture. The mango pieces were just okay though. Fresh mango would have been better. This is a one branch of the iconic Filipino owned business , its logo being "The house that fried chicken built! " Met up with a group of longtime schoolmates for dinner. There were only five of us but we seemed to have ordered enough food for three times as many! Personable and very courteous staff welcomed us and were attentive throughout the dinner. Many traditional entrees and the fried chicken of course. This is not the usual heavily breaded American fried chicken or the heavily sauced Korean style of chicken. It's marinated then simply deep fried till golden, keeping the chicken quite tender and crispy on the outside. My friends showed me to eat this with a mixture of banana ketchup and Worcestershire sauce - I ate mine plain, lol. These other dishes were also delicious: Nilagang Baka or beef soup had tender pieces and cabbage plus potatoes. Also got both pancit bihon (thin rice noodle) and pancit miki bihon ( mixed egg and rice noodles) with chopped vegetables, chicken pieces and shrimp. Laing or sauteed taro leaves in coconut milk -very mildly spicy. Kare kare (tender beef plus vegetables in annatto peanut stew). The traditional dish uses oxtail but I think this version had beef cubes not oxtail. Lumping ubod (sautéed bamboo shoot in a crepe) was a miss for me, the wrapper was simply too thick to be enjoyed. Garlic fried rice also delicious and generous servings. All dishes are meant for family style sharing. Dessert was quite satisfying: halo halo came served in a bowl large enough for sharing. I got the mango sago topped with ice cream - it was in a tiny parfait glass, we thought we could also share but this was definitely a one person serving. The portions are small and The price is steep. We ordered four entrees: Famous Max's Fried Chicken ($19.99 for whole chicken) - it is not how I remembered the taste and quality in the Philippines Kare - Kare (Beef Peanut Stew) $21.99 - I agree with a fellow Yelper that the taste isn't enough. My friend's is way much better. The portion for the price is not worth it either. Too small. It is good for 1 - 2 people. Not much meat too. Pancit Bihon (Egg Noodles) $15.99 - it was okay, nothings great about it. Chicken, the one thing that Max's makes its name off of, was dry. Utterly dry. Kare kare had a couple scraps of meat and mostly bone and some veggies. Even more egregious, the sauce was watery and didn't even taste like peanuts. Y'know, the main flavoring in kare kare's sauce. Your sinigang na baboy? Where was the baboy? You've got some nerve charging the prices you do for the quality and quantity that you give. Your tables are also too small. Don't cramp a big party in one table and pile all the food on that tiny platform. What's wrong with you? Absolutely shameful. Could use more flavor, salt, etc. but this is a Filipino classic and easily fixed with patis or salt. If you're having rich food like lechon kawali then it's probably best not heavily seasoned so you aren't overwhelmed. Pinakbet: meh/10. My significant other loves this veggie medley, especially the bitter melon as a pallet cleanser but me personally, not really a fan of okra or bitter melon. But if that's you're thing then you'll enjoy some fresh veggies. Buko Pandan: 10/10. Creamy, delicious, and sweet. We thought it was going to be a long wait because there were so many people waiting, but it turns out there were a few large parties waiting so we were seated almost immediately I would say Max's is good for groups, if you're willing to wait. -We got the Crispy Pata (Pork Knuckle), a generous portion served with vinegar. I really liked the pickled vege they serve with this dish. -Pancit Bihon (Rice Noodle), this was similar to some Chinese stir-fry rice noodle. We added our leftover crispy Pata to this and it tasted good. On its own, the flavor was very mild/a bit bland. -Kate-Kate (Beef Peanut Stew), this was a bit disappointing. Strong peanut flavor but pretty bland. I know you're supposed to eat it with the shrimp paste they gave on the side, but I didn't really like the flavors together. Vegetables included some greens and eggplant. This was probably my least favorite dish. I do want to try the Sigsigs and their desserts in the future, but I'm not sure if Filipino food is my fare. Our party of 6 got there right in the nick of time...they started filling up like crazy right after that and they don't take reservations. The food was all great and the wait staff was incredible. The food was on the table only about 15 minutes after the order was submitted. We were celebrating a birthday and because we were so nice, they even accepted a big piece of the birthday cake in exchange for not charging us a cake fee. I personally like Max's because they offer one dish that most Filipino restaurants do not offer, and that is Laing (taro leaves in coconut milk.) I was visiting my cousin and her family and they decided to take me to Max's. It's been years since I walked into one. This one had nice ambience. Perfect for families. This is Filipino soul food! Highly recommend the Kare kare, sisig bangus, bicol express and the laing. The fried chicken was delicious but you can get fried chicken anywhere. Parking was easy. Jason, our server, was absolutely wonderful. Had lunch here with my family who were visiting from South America two days ago and I can't stop thinking about this amazing meal. read more
