Came in recently with my grandparents and had a great evening. Gracie was professional in her table service which made the evening besides the food. Before our appetizers came out, we were brought these tasty cheddar croissants with honey butter. That there set the tone for the rest of the meal. French onion soup was spot on. Perfect temperature that was not overly hot where a moment on the table is all it needed. Grandparents had single party burgers. They looked delicious and medium rare as they should be. My pork chop was not over cooked and has a great bite to it. Was a display for sure with all the garnishes on too. The side dish that came with it was yummy. Don't remember what was in it but I ate most of it before even touching the pork chop. No dessert for once. We were all stuffed! Much better experience than my first one. read more

The dark wooden booths and rich leather create an aura of refinement. Our server was very helpful when we had lunch at Max's Tavern on a chilly Thursday. We ordered fish & chips and chicken soup and a Rueben. The presentation was delightful and the food was served with a flourish by two servers at once. We ventured to check out one of the many max restaurants for a special occasion. All I can say is all the Max establishments know how to do it right. From the start to finish and our server was right on and provided great service. This is my 1st time coming here to this location in the basketball hall of fame area in Springfield. We started out with the jumbo shrimp cocktail for an appetizer and it came with 4 shrimps. They were so yummy & fresh. For my meal I went with the seared scallops and the presentation of my dish was beautiful. The taste was so divine. My friend had the grilled pork chops and he said they were cooked medium and perfect. I went with the pink pony club cocktail which was similar to a martini and it was so delicious. I am traveling for work and the team members that I met with today recommended this place. Max's did not disappoint! I requested an outside seating and they accommodated it even though I'm a party of 1. In the beginning, it took a bit to get my water or attention from my server but after we were able to connect, it was better. The server made great menu recommendations that I followed. I had the filet and a stuffed baked potato. The filet was perfectly cooked. The baked potato was good but I'd try something else next time. Loved the outdoor seating. I have been a long-time Max restaurant goer Tonight was hands down the worst experience. Starting with the check-in, the hostess walked away and did not come back for quite some time. Then somebody else walked away and did not come back again. When we finally sat, no one came by our table for at least 10 minutes until I grabbed somebody and asked for a server. The server that came over, we gave our order for drinks and an appetizer. Another 10 or 15 minutes passed when I asked about my order from another server. They politely returned and said nothing had been entered into the computer, and there were a few new people. They took our order, and the appetizers finally came out. The buffalo cauliflower was not very good. I ordered the scallops, which were over $30, and only had half a dozen scallops on it, and the taste was not very good We ordered the specialty dessert, which was tiny and dry. The coffee was twice as long as the dessert and came out cold This was an extremely negative experience, and I won't be back to this Maxis anytime soon read more

To start when we walked in for our reservation no one was at the front to greet us and we waited 5-8 minutes before someone came over. The person that sat us looked like they had the worst job in the world. Our waitress was quick to get us water but that was it, after the meal was delivered we didn't see her till it was time to clean up and pay the bill. We asked for desert menu and waited at least 5 minutes before we got up and grab on ourselves. I can see the delay if it was busy but it was not. We've always enjoyed the atmosphere and cleanliness of Max's. Its one of the few higher-end restaurants in town, and we dine there a few times a month. I've been going since the 1980's in Hartford. Lately we've been disappointed with our entrees, but the starters have always shone through. In the end, we leave less than thrilled, but on the average, satisfied. The appetizers were good (Shrimp cocktail ($20) and crab cake ($19)). I ordered the Filet Mignon ($52). As the menu is ala carte, I also ordered a loaded baked potato ($11). The steak arrived on an empty plate, literally. No garnish, only a obviously overcooked piece of meat (It was ordered medium rare). The first cut confirmed it was brown all the way through. My wife's salmon was slightly overdone, but not worth complaining about it. I can't tell you how many times I've complained about a meal, maybe twice (including this) in the last 25 years? When presented to the waitress she asked me to cut the steak in the middle. When I did, there was somewhat pinkish in the center. By all accounts it was cooked to medium well or well (Remember--medium rare was ordered) Not wanting to appear picky, or worse, wait 30 minutes for for a replacement, I cheerfully relented and kept it. On my first bite, I was shocked. It was just terrible-inedible. The texture was leathery--well beyond just being overcooked. It lacked any seasoning or flavor, save an unpleasant metallic taste that hinted at the meat being old or spoiled. Spurred on by some hopeless optimism that it could possibly improve, i managed 2-3 bites. I was not rewarded. When the waitress stopped by to check on us, I politely explained this to her. She said "I'll pass it on". Typically, the chef or manager would approach the table and offer a discount, dessert, or a glass of wine. Even an apology and a promise to do better next time would have been some comfort. Disappointingly, there was no further action on behalf of Max's Tavern save offering to clear a nearly uneaten meal from the table and presenting us with the bill. The Filet was $52, the going rate for a restaurant of this caliber. For the money, its not selfish to assume that the food is shown some attention in both preparation and presentation. What was served was an inferior piece of unseasoned meat, cooked into a brick, and slapped joylessly onto a bare plate. It was the most disappointing and perfunctory culinary performance I've ever experienced. A meal this bad at this price point is inexcusable, but how they addressed the situation was far worse. We paid, (about $200), tipped in full, and left doubting we'll ever return. read more

Unfortunately this place has gone way downhill. It's sad. Used to be great. My son got a steak (most expensive thing on the menu) and it comes à la carte. $59 and nothing else?? Nothing else on the plate. He had ordered a baked potato which looked like it had been cooking all day way overdone. Burnt and couldn't tell what the black pieces of bacon were. My scallops were just ok. No flavor and came on a small plate of salad?? with maybe 3- 4 small potatoes. It was the most odd presentation and didn't taste good. My husband ordered a dinner salad with a steak and again not great and small portion. Calamari not good. Kids meals came with bananas that were black and carrots that looked like they had been sitting out all day. Bread for the table tasted frozen. Terrible. Will not return. I always give gift certificates to Max's Tavern to a relative for Christmas. Last year, I purchased it the day after Thanksgiving and received a $20 gift card as a promo. I attempted to use it on 9/29. The waitress tried to redeem it and I was told that there was no money on it. She tried numerous times. I contacted Max's the next week and they never responded. That is terrible customer service! I am a repeat customer. Shame on them. I'm taking my business elsewhere. They were also out of the appetizer we wanted. read more

This is in a commercial site next to the NBA Hall of Fame, and the concrete jungle on the outside gives way to a relaxing interior. I got better service than I expected, with my needs met, our party's allergies taken care of, and when I dumbed down the pronunciation of "mercimek" to avoid misunderstandings I was corrected with what I think is the proper Turkish pronunciation. And it was a respectable dish as well; I don't know that the Turks serve their lentil soup with crispy kale or pumpernickel croutons, but judging from my gustatory experience, they should. Obviously this isn't a huge vegetarian place, but the grain bowl I got was a worthy offering marked by some delightful little maitaake mushrooms. The non-alcoholic ginger-based beverage I got was satisfying, as was my cinnamon tea and a single profiterole with strawberry ice cream that had a significant amount of strawberries in it. I found their chairs uncomfortable for my dodgy back, but from a food and service perspective, they provided a good experience, better than I expected. read more

Rarely do I get upset enough to write a review about it. But my experience at this Max restaurant put me to the test. Ambience was on point and the calamari but pretty much else was a disappointment. First, they could not even get a basic order right for my daughter's cheeseburger - cooked medium rare as opposed to well done. They politely recooked a new one only for my daughter to ask where the cheese went. Scallops was the next to disappoint - overcooked and bland to taste. They had kindly offered a dessert on the house, of which the black sesame cracker was my favorite of the food tonight. We were glad they seemed family friendly with plenty highchairs and coloring for the toddlers. However, did not make sense to have a kids menu and coloring with no changing table in the restaurant. The night had topped off with my youngest having a much needed diaper change but ended up a struggle since we had no where good to. This was terrible. I walked in STARVING and it wasn't until about an hour after we ordered we got our starters. Also there were no food options. The place was super small and crowded. Tonight specifically had noted on the reservation it was for a birthday and there was no acknowledgment. They sat us in a table where almost every time someone walked by one of our guests had to move their chair to let them through. 3 out of 5 of us ordered the prime rib special and it looked and tasted as though it had been sitting for days. I ordered the special, pasta. I was very disappointed. First it lacked any flavor whatsoever. Second, the pasta was all stuck together. And third, it was cold. It was supposed to be a seafood dish but it looked like a can of tuna smashed up in a can of unseasoned crushed tomatoes. Awful. We had lunch at Max's again yesterday and found two awesome new dishes. They had a new autumnal version of the Garganelli pasta with a very subtle pumpkin sauce that was so rich and creamy best intentions to "bring half home" were lost. I just checked and the online menu doesn't seem to be updated to this version yet (I believe this is the third version I've seen there this year). The new version doesn't specifically list a protein (like the old version that came with prosciutto) but instead our [very competent] waitress asked if we wanted another protein, including chicken, beef, tofu and maybe a choice or two other. When she mentioned we could do blackened chicken we picked that immediately and it was a perfect combo. The tofu poke bowl was also as good as ever. We also also finished with the flourless chocolate torte which we split two ways - delicious! This was less dense than some flourless chocolate tortes so an interesting twist on the idea. Remember to make sure you ask for the cheesy bread rolls. And they still have outdoor dining! We still only eat outdoors for now and just carry an extra sweater. They do appear to have heat lamps, though they weren't needed or on while we were there. read more

This was me and my family's first visit and everything was perfect. Josh was our server and he was pleasant and attentive. We started out with an appetizer. My son doesn't eat seafood, so he opt out. My husband and I had Colossal Shrimp with Horseradish cocktail sauce and also a Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. It came with Watercress, orange, fennel salad, cajun remoulade. For our entree, my husband and son had a Tavern Burger with Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled onion, lettuce, tomato, and french fries. My son doesn't like tomatoes or onions, so he had everything on his burger but that. I ordered the Garlic Ginger Shrimp. It consisted of Sauteed shrimp, campanelle pasta, kale, tomato-ginger butter sauce, roasted garlic. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese and it was cheesy and delicious. For our drinks, my son and I had a soft beverage. We really enjoyed our food. I didn't eat all of mine. I was really stuffed from the appetizer, so I took mine home for later. We will definitely be back when the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame opens up late March, since that was the reason why we were in this end of Massachusetts. read more

I'm traveling for work and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, so decided to give this a try based on proximity. Being by a tourist attraction, I did not expect this to be anything special but I was proven wrong. I sat at the bar because I was alone and received excellent service from the bartender, Matt. I ordered a glass of white wine from the happy hour menu and then ordered the chili that was on the fall menu and a chopped salad with steak for my meal. They brought me bread with my chili and it may be the best thing I've ever had. It's like a cheesy biscuit with a sweet honey butter and it was divine. The chili had sweet potato in it and was delicious! I ordered a glass of red wine to have with my chili and steak and it was a perfect pairing. When my salad came I was actually already feeling full from the chili and bread but the salad looked amazing with fresh veggies and a perfectly cooked steak, so I continued to indulge. It was a really large portion so I couldn't finish it, but literally was the best meal I've had in long time. I enjoyed sitting at the bar, watching sports and chatting with some of the locals. Service was excellent and attentive. Food was some of the freshest I've had in awhile and hit the spot. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area. So she didn't use it. Home fries were great. Sandwich was good just mixing bacon and somehow a tomato was on it she just took it off. I got the grilled chicken breast sandwich. Not many restaurants with outdoor seating in the area. This was actually a really good option for lunch with a decent kids menu too! My little one got the hamburger and fries, devoured it pretty quickly too! I got a turkey club sandwich without the bacon and my hubby got the grilled chicken caprese sandwich with the pesto on the side (which was REALLY good, but not his thing). The pickles that came with each dish were delicious and since I'm the only one in my party to eat them I was SO happy! They also put these awesome cheese biscuits on each table that were a real treat! One thing that we weren't happy with were the fries... literally the smallest fries EVER!!
