If you're looking for an unforgettable dining experience in Houston, look no further than Max's Wine Dive on Washington Avenue! Having frequented this gem for over a decade, I can confidently say that their food and service (for the most part) have been exceptionally consistent throughout. The quality of their food is truly outstanding, from their legendary collard greens to my personal fave - the mouthwatering Cracklin' Chicken. Everything is delicious! The atmosphere is vibrant, sultry, and upscale, blending chic and cozy perfectly. The entryway is a standout, featuring amazing lighting and lush seating, making for the perfect photo op. Their wine selection is top-notch, and their service is impressively speedy without sacrificing quality. They are incredibly accommodating, and truly made my last visit feel special. Their prime location combined with ample parking ensures convenience for all guests. Whether you're there for a casual evening, Wednesday Steak Night or a grand celebration, Max's Wine Dive never disappoints! My only feedback is towards service and management - update the menu with what's actually available. The lead waitress basically told me when I picked a Chardonnay out of stock she would just select something comparable for me. I asked if it was house Chardonnay but didn't receive a clear answer. That was off putting, this is a wine themed restaurant and I want to know exactly what I'm drinking. Also, if I ask for the notes in a wine, I expect the waitress to be informed or find out but my question was brushed off.

I met up with a friend and his family for dinner on Saturday evening. I'm unsure if they made a reservation but we were seated promptly and provided water. We were also informed that the menu was available via QR code. Our waitress came shortly after (maybe within 5-10 minutes) and took drink and food orders. Some of us hadn't been ready to order drinks yet since it's on a different tab than the dinner menu online. It took a while to get her attention to come back, but we eventually flagged her down. The drinks and food came out promptly and our waitress checked on us a few times to ensure orders were correct. I got the OG cheeseburger (no pickles) with truffle fries. The burger was pretty solid but a little on the salty side. The cheese (actually, unsure if that was cheese now that I think about it) on the fries were a little hard and honestly unnecessary. The fries themselves were delicious though and I appreciated that they provided the mayo and ketchup separate so you could add it yourself or simply use it to dip the fries. I've been here once before for brunch so this was my first time for dinner. The music was nice and the decor was cohesive. I didn't go to the bathroom so I can't speak to the cleanliness. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good experience and I plan to return for happy hour in the near future.

This was an interesting experience with mixed reviews. The 2for Tuesday deal was amazing. A drink and selected entrees for 20 bucks. The deviled eggs were amazing. The chicken had absolutely no seasoning. However it was perfectly crunchy, which was weird. The empanada was delicious. This is not a bad happy hour for Tuesday. I wouldn't mind going back. Service was also a little different but overall, I enjoyed my experience.

As you can see from the pictures the food looked great. Well it tasted great as well. The chicken and waffles were both chewy, and crispy at the same time. The waffle batter was sweet and the chicken flavored for my taste buds. The service was ok but maybe that was because of how busy they were. I didn't enjoy the way the place is set up because you don't have much room to move around.

Our friend suggested this place so he knew the food was good. We stopped in on Friday and I was surprised that they were serving brunch. The music was good and fit the brunch ambiance, but I felt the music was slightly too loud because it was a group of us. It seemed like it was blaring on that side of the restaurant. It's not brunch unless you can find chicken and waffles. I mean the legit chicken and waffles with fried chicken not chicken tenders. I not only found chicken and waffles with fried chicken but also the "hot" one that's more like Nashville hot. I was pretty impressed with the size of the fried chicken and how perfectly cooked and not dried out! I'd give it a 9/10 just for the perfect crispness and how moist it was. The chicken was nicely marinated or brined. The only thing lacking was more heat and flavor on the "hot". I love spicy so the waitress suggested collard greens because it has a little kick to it. I tasted the little heat, but was too sour for my liking. I've never had collard greens cooked with vinegar for that sourness before so I wasn't expecting that. I found out from my friend that it's the southern way and every place makes them different. It was cooked just right but I'd prefer them prepared without that flavor. I'd definitely be back for the chicken and waffles.

I've been coming here for years and it truly used to be one of my favorite neighborhood spots. The service was always great, the staff was warm, and the prices felt fair for what you received. It had that comfortable, local vibe where you could relax and enjoy a solid meal without feeling like you were splurging. Unfortunately, my recent visit was really disappointing. For three pieces of chicken and two sides, my total came to $44 -- for one person. That pricing feels completely disconnected from what the dish actually is. What made it even more surprising is that the cost of that simple chicken plate is now the same as some of the newer menu options like crab legs and crawfish. That just doesn't make sense. On top of that, the ambience has shifted. What once felt like a cozy neighborhood restaurant now feels more "upper echelon," and not necessarily in a way that enhances the experience -- just in a way that justifies higher prices. I understand that costs go up and businesses evolve, but longtime customers notice when value changes this drastically. I truly miss the balance this place used to have between quality, service, and reasonable pricing. I hope they can find their way back to what made it special in the first place.

Not too crowded on a late Saturday evening when we came for a late dinner/drinks. My friend who used to work here always talked about the delicious fried chicken so I was very much looking forward to trying it.. Got the Chicken waffles, fried chicken and tried out a few appetizers like the brussels sprouts and truffle fries. The food was okay, the portions were great though- very generous. The chicken tenders were massive and seasoned well. I could barely make a dent in my waffles and we both had to get to go boxes.. (Waffles are not your typical Belgium waffle in that it seemed more buttery perhaps with the buttermilk recipe) I was not a fan of the "frozen kool-aid", not sure why it was recommended by the waitress but it was literally just champagne and kool-aid pre-mixed, not sure what I was expecting lol, but in my sober state would not opt for any pre-mix high sugar cocktails. I will say the wine list here is extensive, and if we hadn't been already drinking liquor I would've opted for a glass here and enjoy the vibes at the bar. It had the feel of a sports bar more than wine with some TVs showing games and somewhat louder ambiance. Overall it's an upscale comfort food place, good for brunch and a few glasses of wine, they also have happy hour on the weekdays from 3-6 (check out the menu!)

This was my second visit at this establishment, first visit wasn't it. Glad I came back to try their brunch. Everything was phenomenal. Casual restaurant. Service was attentive. Mimosas were mimosing and food was outstanding. Can't wait to return.

I visited Max's Wine Dive when I was in town with my sorority for our international conference. My sorority sisters and I was trying to locate a place that would allow all of us to kind of sort of sit together. Max's made great accommodations for us to do this, and they didn't have to. That made the visit decent in my book. This visit was a minute ago but I can say that my food was good. I know some people in my group had a mix up with food and the amount of time it was taking for some people's food to come out. Our mimosas were good. I don't see what the big deal is about the chicken....it was fried chicken. Maybe because I'm from Georgia I've had better. No tea, no shade. I visited Max's Washington location for the first time in yearssss! I was pleasantly surprised to see the quality of food and the vibes were still on point. Eh I am not impressed at all but will give it another try another day maybe. Waitress was not friendly and seemed bothered to wait on us, gave no info about anything on menu. Tried the Southern fried chicken and it was cooked perfect just not much flavor. My daughter got the spicy option and it wasn't very spicy but did have more flavor. We started with a charcuterie board that was ok but nothing special for the $27. This was the perfect brunch spot. The restaurant is a bit on the small side, but they take reservations, so don't wait for a table! I ordered the chicken and french toast (they let you sub the waffle for french toast with no up charge), but I also got to try the honey butter chicken benedict. Mine was better, by a long shot, but to each its own... The chicken wings were crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with more meat than what you'd expect from a wing; and, the french toast was fluffy but also moist. I also had a glass of their grapefruit mimosa, which was SO good. The reason for the 4 versus 5 stars is because of the price. $18 for "chicken & waffles" seemed a bit much, but the mimosa was only $5, so I can't complain too much. :) read more

I went here because they were supposed to have one of the best fried chicken according to reddit. Do not waste your time. Chicken is juicy, but not much more. I would have been more satisfied with KFC or Popeyes for the price. Also the place is so loud and the wine bottles are really up charged. read more

Date night with the Hubby. Nice quaint place great wine collection and service was good. Music was good and so was the over all vibe in this place. Nothing but smiles and good times. We love the food here but the service can use some work. When we arrived we didn't have a reservation. However the place was empty, and the hostess said that she could not seat us at a table because of the reservations. She wasn't welcoming or warm. So we sat at the bar, and kept our eyes on the tables. (They were not hard to miss with some being empty the entire time we were there.) the hostess told us if they did not show we could have a table, and when I asked her around 6:30pm about the people that were supposed to be there at 6:00pm that never arrived she seemed to have an attitude. We just said screw it and stayed at the bar. Luckily the food made up for how ridiculous we thought it was to turn tables down to people when so many were and stayed empty. Last week we stopped in but unfortunately my phone was out of battery so I asked for a paper menu. No dice, the restaurant arrogantly insists on everyone scanning a QR code and then navigating their horrible interface to read the tiny print. Where do I begin... We made a reservation for 10 people for 11am (opening time) several days in advance. When we called before we arrived, the Chef answered the phone and said he saw our reservation. When we arrived the Hostess/Server didn't know about our reservation and told US TO MOVE THE TABLES ourselves. First problem. She told us she was new, which is an issue because as a previous server, a new server shouldn't run a 10 topBlaine. She handed us the Brunch menus, we placed our order, only for her to return to say they ARENT offering Brunch... We changed our orders and waited an additional HOUR AND A HALF to eat; keep in mind people who came after us were not only eating, but finishing up their meals long before we got ours. My fries were cold, my bun was even colder, and my cousin's chicken was uncooked. To put the icing on the cake, when my cousin asked the server if she could put the appetizers on her check so she could treat us, the server had already split it amongst everyone without asking. The server YELLED "OH MY GOD ITS ONLY MY FIRST DAY". I'll just end it right here. Needless to say I won't be returning. read more

Not too bad. I think I like the Max's in Midtown a tiny bit better. Food was good. Service was okay. It was not a very busy night due to the weather so the lack luster service kind of baffled me. Angel was out server/bar tender. She was okay. Seemed very distracted in the beginning and was chatty with hostest. Anyway, the other bar tenders hopped to it and made it up for it. Towards the end everyone got better on being attentive. Probably won't come back to this location. The Midtown location is just more fun and the food is much better. read more

Hm. I had heard a lot about this place, but it seems a tad overhyped. Everyone now claims the one in Austin is much better. For some reason, GPS takes you to the back. Anyway, it's a pretty small location--let's say intimate. We ordered some mimosas. The regular ones are $5 a piece and don't seem to have much champagne. The menu leans more towards buying bottles instead. I had the honey butter Benedict. It was actually really good. My friends had the wing and waffle. Comes with 3 wings and a big waffle for like $18. My friend asked for a extra wing and was told it's $5. For one wing. That's a joke. She was also charged $9 for truffle fries. I will say there are locations in town that are more well known that will give you the same food or better and double the amount of wings. Just saying. Service was actually really good & hold it if you have to use the restroom. read more

I had the best Brussels sprouts and beef short ribs I've ever had in my life. I'm from DC and came to texas for my birthday, I was not disappointed. The size of the restaurant is rather small but the food was pretty good. We went for brunch during Houston Restaurant Week. I ordered the Red Velvet Waffle and Honey Butter Benedict. Waffle was good but a little stiffer than I prefer which kind of threw the taste of it. The Benedict was delicious! Nice sized piece of chicken and the eggs were cooked to a nice running consistency to get a sauce that adds a layer of flavor. The home fries were also delicious. Great flavor that didn't need to have anything added (I did anyway though lol). Got an orange juice that was slightly high to me for OJ. Nice customer service and the place seems to pack up easily. MAX's wine dive used to be a great place to go. I've been to this restaurant numerous times since 2014 but over the years the quality of the food has become so terrible to the point where I would not come back after my last visit. One of my favorite meals was the famous southern fried chicken and I will put the emphasis on "was" because the last time I ordered this meal the chicken appeared to be fried without any batter. I tried to get the order replaced which was not a problem I was immediately given the option for a full refund but instead I just wanted the meal that I ordered. I was completely dissatisfied and disappointed with the results. I ultimately ended up throwing the meal away and gave up any hope of ever going back. Eah - The place is small, service once it started was good. We got there on a Friday about 7. The place was slow not very busy. We sat at the table for a while and watch the waitress walked past us multiple times. Finally the bartender came from behind the bar and waited on us. He was a nice guy and did a good job. We ordered the sticky ribs to start with and no they were not sticky and did not have much flavor. My guest had the shrimp and grits which did get a good review. I've been a patron of this restaurant since I first moved to TX nine years ago. The chicken, collards, truffled mac w Texas toast was always my go to. In the last two years I've noticed a steady decline in product and service. I go back hoping to get great food and service bc that's what I've come to expect from MAX's Wine Dive but the last 4 visits have been pure disappointment. Last nights stomach reaction to what I believe was undercooked chicken was the last straw. I'll give this restaurant a fair rating due to the food and ambiance having been good in the past. But no no no something has changed. Check your food internal temp before serving and our waitress was lovely especially for it being after midnight. (They close at 2am) I took an instagramable photo of my food. Didn't look at it, just put my phone down and continued to eat in the dimly lit restaurant. Well I wish I would've checked my photo because I would've noticed the pinkish color in parts of the chicken. I ended up with a small case of food poisoning that night. They've also changed the Mac n cheese recipe into something awful. It has too much liquid now. I have zero urges to go back. Hope it gets back to the place most of us really enjoyed. read more

Started our 40th Anniversary with lunch at Max's. I had the pineapple mimosa which was good but not the wow I expected. It lacked pineapple flavor I ordered the chicken and waffles which were excellent. The syrup was not anything special. A good maple with a few herbs added would have elevated it or possibly maple peaches with a bourbon sauce. Just my opinion. The seasoning on the chicken was perfect. I love the sourdough bacon and egg sandwich but skipped it this time. I also highly recommend the Brussels sprouts. My Honey got the Southern fried chicken. He got Mac and cheese instead of collards. Great idea! The Mac and cheese is the best EVER!!! Next time I'm going to try the Mac and cheese with the fried lobster. We were using an OpenTable reward to dine & it kept getting declined. The manager on duty (Cody) showed no empathy and made no attempt to make us feel good about the situation - he made us feel like we were scammers or criminals. We've been coming here sporadically for years. Every time we do visit, we wonder why we didn't come back sooner. For the first time our service was 'less than' - hence the missing star. Although it wasn't busy our waitress didn't seem interested in introducing herself, engaging with our party, or trying to get things right. Out of 7 orders 3 weren't correct. The food though? Fried chicken & spicy chicken were banging! Egg sandwich made a member of our group swoon. A picky, picky eater ate more of the short rib dish than I think I've ever seen her eat in one sitting (although the rest of us found the sauce cloying). Salad was good but the dressing was flat out weird (who makes a CREAMY champagne vinaigrette?!)? The pasta dish was heavy but tasty. Universally we all hated the greens though! Our server informed us it would be about 30 - 40 mins and she was right and it wasn't terribly busy at the time either. Cooked low and slow - worth the wait - piping hot, crispy, juicy deliciousness! I didn't take any photos but I went to MAX's for a long, four hour, brunch reacquainting with an old friend. It was awesome. Even though it is a small place we never felt rushed. It was crowded but not overly noisy. Our server was great. We loved the Froze cocktail. We shared a charcuterie and chicken and waffle. It was so good and huge portions. Today is my second visit; 1st visit was not long after they opened so, it's been possibly 10 years ago. There's not much ambiance at Max's; the bar decor is cheesy to null. It needs an upgrade...cool lighting fixtures, cool candles, more of an industrial feel to it. Hang large white bulbs across the length or width of the place. Take down the cartoons from back of bar...they're stupid and don't fit the vibe at all. It's a Wine dive...keep it simple but not tacky On the sunny side...it has a great wine selection. Good food. It was after a Yelp Event when my sisters, mom and I had the late night munchies. By "late," I mean 10pm. I called only minutes before to request a table for eight. As soon as we arrived, our table was ready and situated way in the back - much appreciated because we had a lot more celebrating to do. It was Sister No 3's 30th birthday. Our server helped us pick out a few bottles of bubbly and red to pair with our assortment of food - ranging from fried chicken to grilled cheese. I've had just about everything off their menu ... or so I thought. Now I'm not really an egg person. If anything, I stick with egg whites. But something led me to order The Fried Egg Sandwich. And let me say that this sandwich was so magical, I'm almost convinced that Jesus himself made it. Imagine three fried eggs drizzled with truffle oil and layered with applewood-smoked bacon, gruyere, lettuce, tomato and black truffle aioli and ciabatta pugliese. As soon as our server presented this plate before me, the entire table swooned. We could smell each and every rich ingredient, especially the gruyere. Ahhh. I'm having flashbacks. Right. Now. It was mighty in size, so fortunately, I shared this, along with the standard Nacho Mama's Oysters - with Sister No. 1. Since I now realize there's so much more on the menu that I've yet to try, I do plan on coming back soon. Especially for brunch. What often happens in my travel life is that I have fast turn around trips and recently I found myself in Houston for a short time-- 24 hours total. I knew I could get to two of my yelp bookmarks and I decided that Max's should be one of them. The two reasons for this were: the Famous Fried Egg Sandwich and the wine. I mean... really? Knowing what I wanted, I ordered immediately and the food came immediately. With this egg sandwich masterpiece, you smell the gruyere first, then the truffle mayonnaise and bacon. It is delightful. Even the chips that came with it were really fresh. I ended up getting the happy hour special of the sandwich, which is 1/3 of the size of the normal one and is totally enough food. Writing this review now, I would give a lot for the other 2/3 of that sandwich right now. I am telling you that much. It is CRAZY good. Where the overall prices are slightly high, the happy hour pricing is completely reasonable. What wine pairs with a fried egg sandwich? Moscato? I don't know. I wanted something bubbly and got a glass of cava (Argam 'Reserva'). It hit the spot p e r f e c t l y before heading to the airport. Yes, Max's parking lot is nuts and the environment is a little mixed (not exactly being a date place and not exactly being a hang out place, it is probably the closest to a get together with friends place) but, all in it is great. You should make an effort to head over here, if you live in Houston or are just in for a day. read more

Dined here today for Brunch and to celebrate my good friend's belated birthday. I showed up 30 min before my reservation but was seated immediately. Check One. The waiter came over and introduced himself and immediately offered me a choice of mimosas. I selected the caramelized pineapple by the bottle. Tasted delicious. Check Two. I wish they gave us more bread with the cheeses and preserves. The four cheeses provided were slices of a five-year aged Cheddar, Oveja Anejo, Tomarashi, and Gruyere. I enjoyed the Tomarashi the most. It is a bit pricey for what you get, but very sharable and a great starter. Shady Acres Pizza with prosciutto (3.5/5): I really don't like getting thin crust pizza that isn't crispy, and unfortunately this was a soggy thin crust pizza. The toppings themselves were very flavorful, and the end parts were crispy enough. 5 Cheese Calzone with chicken (3.5/5): Whew, five cheeses makes for a salty calzone. The side marinara sauce provides a good balance. It's very filling. Chicken might have been a good addition because prosciutto might have made it too salty. It was larger than expected which was nice for sharability. Service was kind of iffy. They were pretty rude with not providing us utensils and seeming almost angry that we asked for some for the cheese board. They mixed up our order (we asked for chicken on the pizza and prosciutto on the calzone and they flipped it) and seemed almost apologetically serving us afterwards. Overall, would recommend as a relaxed date spot at a reasonable price. I paid via inKind and applied referral credit with no issues. Would come back with inKind credit, probably not at full price.

J opted for a cab while I decided on a couple to sample before ultimately choosing a red blend. I appreciate that they're more than happy to give you a taste before committing to a glass. You can choose between 3 or 6oz pours, or a bottle. We also decided to share a cheese board with the Willoughby cheese which was soft and delicious! We sat at the bar and the server took our order. I got a sweet wine and we split a small board. I got the brie with prosciutto and she got cheddar with salami. They do charge extra for the prosciutto cut. The jam that comes on the board is her favorite and it's delicious. We chatted with each other and with some gentleman that said they were regulars there. It was a good pour, not too little or too much and the taste was deep, well balanced and smooth. Since the event took place around dinner time I also had a Fig and Speck flatbread. The fig, prosciutto and other toppings complimented each other well. The flatbread dough itself was ok but could've benefited from a little more flavor such as some garlic, butter and herbs. I also would've liked it a bit thinner so I could taste less of the bread and more of those delicious toppings. Don't get me wrong it was good and I ate all of it but these are small suggestions I'd recommend to bring it to perfection. I could see parking and seating being tricky. I was fortunate to snag a parking spot on the side of the building near the auto place and once inside I found a seat at a table with a lovely couple, another couple joined us soon after. Many of the guests who arrived later stood at first and then halfway through the event, made their way to the floor where they sat cross legged. All in all, The Library was a nice establishment and although a little out of my way, I'd return for another event or if I were in the area again.

I might have just found one of my new favorite restaurants in Houston. What a great experience!…read more Recently, a good friend dined here and immediately called me to tell me how great it was. She then text our friends group and said we all had to come together and we did just that. She made reservations in advance as this place is popular thanks to recent Michelin Bib Gourmand awards as well as many other accolades. Walk ins are welcome as well. Our reservation was later in the evening so after a night of bar hopping, we ride shared in which I think is one of the best options as parking is limited here or you have to find street parking in the neighborhood. This place is literally a house turned into a restaurant. Inside is just multiple rooms with a couple of tables. It makes for a unique, intimate dining experience, perfect for a date night. In our case, we were a group of nine so we got patio seating. The patio is spacious and well kept, and if the weather cooperates, a great place to hang. One thing that really stood out to me is the amazing ambience of this place. I was told that the bartenders pick the music for the night from the owners extensive vinyl collection. Once the album is in, they play it in it's entirety. The sound system was systeming and on top of the great company and food, we were totally vibing with the music. Customer service was amazing. Every staff member we came across was so friendly, especially our server. The menu here changes. There are some mainstays, but they like to change things up. Their website shows current menus daily. We were told that family style is the best way to experience this restaurant. I am one of those people that will always listen to the staff and go with their suggestions. Our group went through quite a bit of their menu from apps, entrees and desserts. I loved that our server and staff brought our food out one by one in what they thought was the best progression so we could take a culinary journey. We started off light with their popular Dilly Bread. Best bread I've had in awhile. Next was the Texas Tartare. It was my first ever tartare and it was delicious. We then moved on to Fingerlingin Good which was a crispy potato dish with chili crisp and mascarpone. It was potatoes elevated to the highest level and so so good. Next up was Beer Battered Sweet Tots. I didn't think sweet potatoes could be that good. Our first entree was a vegan dish called the Carroty Kid. I could seriously become a vegan if all dishes tasted like this. It was curried. A bowl of jasmine rice would've made it a complete meal. Next we tried another famous Nobie's dish called Nonno's Pasta. Handmade, perfectly cooked tagliatelle with a delicious bolognese. I wouldn't share this next time. Ok, I will, but it was that good. On to the heavier dishes. First up was the Jamon With Your Bad Self. This came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. It was favorite heavy entree. It was high quality, iberico pork steak with shaved brussels and all kinds of other tasty ingredients that when combined made such a tasty bite. We then went to the sea with the Drops of Grouperter. It was good, but not something I would order again. It was a little too smoky for my liking. Our biggest dish that came market priced was the Kick His Ass Seabass. This was a whole fish that was presented beautifully on a platter with all the accouterments to make your own elevated fish tacos. We left no morsel of fish behind. It was absolutely delicious. One of the things this place is really known for is their pies. This was the part I was most excited about. Just like their menu, their pies change up. We got all their offerings that night which they presented on one big platter of goodness. Their main stay and I believe always on the menu is the famous Olive Oil Cake. It's not a pie, but I can see why this is such a popular dessert. I can't even describe it, you just have to try it to understand. The pies we had were the Black Bottom Strawberry Pie, Banana Rum, and the Peanut Butter Pie. I would order all of them again. We all had a difference of opinion on which was the best, but my fave was the Banana Rum. Overall, I was highly impressed with this place and kind of mad at myself for waiting so long to make it here. It had made it's way to the top of my list of favorite restaurants in Houston. The chicken dinner was definitely the winner--fresh, juicy breast, crispy skin...don't be cute, you won't finish it unless your party has at least 4 in it! The flies were ruthless! Very annoying! They were acting like the geekers that come bother you just outside your favorite fried chicken joint in south Dallas! Our waitress brought out a table fan so that made the experience a little more tolerable. The chocolate peanut butter pie tasted like a salt rock and the lemon chiffon pie had great flavor but not lemony enough for me. All in all this place is a bit pricey but truly a gem! GM Kevin, should review the footage of the private party event that happened yesterday for the table of 17 & definitely reprimand, retrain, and reconsider some of this staff. Once he left, the night appeared to go downhill. The food was absolutely delicious. The live music in the background was also quite impressive. The service on the other hand was horrible. I took several out of town clients in hope of showing them a great time. When we arrived, there was no hostess, so we went to go sit at a table. The waiter said we can't sit there, because only a hostess can sit us at an empty table (there were several empty tables). Apparently the hostess was no where to be found. 5 minutes later, after standing next to an empty table, they came back and said it was ok for us to sit there. Our server was extremely rude and condescending. She treated us as if we were not good enough for this establishment. It was all of our first times there, so obviously we didn't know what we wanted to order just yet. So we started with water and looked over the menu. She did make some great recommendations on which food items to get, but that was about the extent of her politeness. Once our food arrived we decided to order some wine, but as we were looking over the wine list, she came and took the wine list to give it to the table next to us, without even asking if we wanted anything. Apparently, my guests by appearance, were not the upscale clientele that she prefers. The worst part was at the end, when we paid our bill. We paid in cash and tipped well, but she took it, didn't even ask if we needed change, and never returned to the table. She just assumed that all of it was for her. (It was, but it was still the simple principal of practicing good customer service.) All of my guests felt extremely upset and unhappy with their experience. I will not take the chance and bring clients to this place again. If I return, I'll go by myself and just sit at the bar, as the food was indeed amazing. read more

My husband and I came to Max's during happy hour. I ordered the chicken and champagne sandwich and he had the wings. Both were surprisingly interesting and tasty, and very reasonably priced at $6. The plates aren't huge, but it was enough food for me to consider it my dinner. (Husband might have eaten again later that night.) I would recommend Max's in two situations: (1) A first or early-on date. I'm not a huge fan of the Washington Ave. vibe, but this place has a good "date" atmosphere. The interesting food choices, open kitchen (best seen sitting at the bar), great people watching, and the sheer volume of wine choices make for plenty of conversation. Just be warned that if either of you is drinking wine the tab will climb fast- making this less appealing to a married person like me who would rather cook a nice dinner and open my own $7 bottle at home. (2) If you're not out to impress someone- i.e. long-term relationship out for a routine meal or with a friend- come here for Happy Hour and order food and $2 Lone Stars. read more

Max's is our go-to Sunday dinner location. We prefer to sit at the bar which on Sunday nights there is almost always an opening. Its fun to watch the chef's prepare your meal right in front of you. The waiters and bartenders here are some of the best and will give you some enjoyable conversation. We typically start with a cheese place (Currently the cheese is from Mairy Maids in Houston). We then almost always split our main meal (This is comfort food). We typically split one of the large plates such as Kobe Burger, Fried Chicken, or Grilled Cheese which usually comes with soup. Our favorite menu item, Cowboy Sushi, has been removed. Cowboy Sushi was cheese and peppers rolled in a thin slice of grilled tender beef. I've been to Max's several times actually, and I love the place. The food, first of all, is fantastic. From seasonal entrees (wild boar pasta) and small plates (crawfish hush puppies), to their year-round dishes like fried chicken and kobe burgers, I've never had a 'miss'. Delicious, fresh and relatively affordable for the caliber of food. The wine list evolves often at Max's and they are more than happy to let you taste a few until you get the right bottle or glass for you. We've discovered some very affordable wines tasting at Max's, and the best part is you can buy retail at super-competitive prices right from the bartenders to take home! love max's wine dive. have been there about 10 times over the past few years. they have awesome staples like the sliders, mac and cheese, fried chicken and burgers. and they mix it up every now and then with a new menu every season. the mac and cheese and fattening as can be but delicious. I get it with the cornbread. the fried egg sandwich is money but i ask for the truffle oil on the side b/c it gets to greesy. my only compliant is that i wish there were more options for wine drinking by the glass. the have only one or two to choose from from a few varieties of grapes if you want a glass. I love the food at this place, I am an Uber Eats delivery driver and also a customer, my favorite is their CRISPY DEVILED EGGS , and Jose just made me aware of their fries - truffle drizzle with parmesan shavings. I was just in there tonight ordering for myself and picking up an order for a customer and I got the whole treatment from JOSE the Food Specialist manager, ANGEL the pretty hostess and Corey - the Culinary Creation Specialist. Jose and Corey not only presented me with my food but gave descriptions that were mouth watering and compelling. (Healthy food) I had been recommended this spot by a few friends and thought this a perfect opportunity to try it out. Definitely wasn't disappointed! The food here is pretty good and service is okay. I came for brunch only and I'm not sure how other times of the day are. The wine recommendations are great! I had a glass of Pino grigio and a glass of cab...both recommended by our super nice waitress, I was not disappointed. Finally, really good fried chicken in Houston. We've been to most of the high rated places and quite frankly, I would think the Houston could do better. But, at Max's the fried chicken is great. The collards are the best I've had. We didn't have reservations so we sat at the bar. Not complaining at all, we sit at the bar by choice a lot. The service was very fast and friendly. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with scrambled eggs and cheese grits. The place was very crowded and there is usually a wait if you do not have a reservation. Once seated the waiter was prompt getting drink and food orders. Food arrived in a timely manner and was delicious, the cheese grits were not as good as the rest of the food. We've visited Max's Wine Dive several times and each time the food is delicious. I like how they only offer wine and no sodas. If you want a coke, well, you are out of luck here at Max's. Personally, I think that is a good idea. The negatives... it is a bit noisy at times. I found myself having to shout at the person across the table to be heard. Also, the seating is very close together and when it is crowded you will find yourself sitting very close to a stranger at the next table or bench seat. read more

Every time I'm in Houston, I always have to do Sunday brunch here just for the chicken fried lobster and creme brûlée french toast! Oh my! Had a great time at Max's! The food was absolutely on point--the bang bang shrimp and Cracklin' Chicken were both A+. Huge shoutout to Kyri, who was our waiter/bartender--super attentive and makes some seriously good drinks. The vibe is upscale but still welcoming, and to top it off, the owner came by to chat after I complimented everything and even treated us to shots. Our waitress, Theresa, was FABULOUS! She gave us the inside scoop of mixing and matching on our menu and we were able to try a few items! The Max n cheese was delicious! We will definitely try adding the bacon and jalapeños next time. The real winner was the fried chicken! We had the wings and they fell off the bone! Theresa gave us great service and made us laugh and have a GREAT TIME!!! read more

Incredible! Awesome. One of the best places in town to eat. My husband and I came here the other night and we will definitely be back. Not the biggest menu around, but the food is absolutely perfect. The restaurant itself is on the small side, but it's got a very quaint feeling to it. The staff is wonderful and very helpful when picking out the perfect wine to go with your dinner. read more

Taste: Max's has a pretty cool and unique tasting menu. The portions are huge and the wine selection is nice. Feel: The place is small and crowded. Parking is never available and valet seems to be the only option. It's loud and has a lot of energy. Cool wine bottle lights and nice millwork. Bang: Can get expensive but it's a very cool experience for nice occasions. read more

Waiter's t-shirt said Chicken & Champagne, Why Not? Why not indeed! The friend I was dining with said they were famous for their chicken so that is what we ordered. Chicken and champagne. Food, service and atmosphere were fantastic. It is a small place so do make reservations or visit during a non-peek time. Will definitely go back to try something else on their menu. read more
