This is my fave lil cafe in Bed-Stuy. The spicy congee is actually spicy (read: they use sambal). But the prana chai is the showstopper. It's the best masala chai that I have had in a non-Desi space. My wife and I stopped at Maya on a whim after visiting some daycares in the area. We saw a sign for Vietnamese coffee and I had to stop in to try a cup. Fortunately, I took a look at the menu and saw that they also served congee. I ordered both to share with the wife and both were delicious. The coffee was nice and strong and the congee provided a modern twist on the classic rice porridge dish. The service was extremely friendly and welcoming. I'll be back to try out the sandwiches. As for the Chicken Congee, I think it's best not to order it for delivery -- by the time it arrived, the quinoa had soaked up all the liquid and it was more jello vs. congee consistency, and it needed some salt. I think I'll have to come in-person and eat it fresh, to get a better sense of how it's supposed to be! And I do love that they have some Asian grocery items available via delivery (too). read more

Stumbled upon this place looking to grab a bite that we could eat in Herbert Von King park and we were pleasantly surprised! First of all, there are so many cool goodies and specialty ingredients to buy that we will definitely coming back just to shop. We got two sandwiches (one vegetarian and one chicken) and they were phenomenal! The chicken one was particularly mind blowing and the veggie one kind of tasted just like the chicken so there's no need to get both but my partner was eating meat free. Maybe the aesthetics of this eatery may not be impressive but their food is awesome. The simplicity of BSP is what makes this small, laid-back restaurant surprisingly attractive. I came here during lunch time and didn't think they were open. Luckily, I tried to open the door and it was open so I walked in. No one was around and I yelled out hello. I could've started singing the Acapella version of "Hello" since I didn't think anyone was there but the staff came out, lol. She was very friendly. I asked her if they were open today and she said in a chipper voice, "Of course!" Everything on the menu looked good. It was hard to make a decision. Finally, I decided to try the crab slider, steamed veggies and chamomile tea. Even though the wait was a bit long, it was worth it. The crab slider was fresh and rich with flavorful seasoning. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and had the breakfast congee bowl with pork, the pork sandwich, and Vietnamese iced coffee. The congee was really good and a bit of a thicker consistency than others I've had. Though the pork had a kick I thought there bowl could use a bit more hot sauce. Pork sandwich was solid on a nice sesame roll. Both were more than enough food to share between two people. The iced coffee was OK, I would probably get a regular coffee next time and skip the condensed milk. They have lots of goodies in the market too if you need a refresh on specialty sauces or rice. I have been drooling over the photos for this place for a week and made it my business to come over for a 'Sando'. The decor was relaxed, simple, clean and homey with a few seats of different groupings of 2 (high window seats, couch with 2 cafe tables, etc.) The counter was decorated with baked gooods granola, coffee and oat jars. The smile and greeting from Kim (the owner) I received at the door was the best in a long time. The sandwich I chose was only for spring, so she subbed the spread for wasabi mayo and the Swiss was switched to provolone. I swear to you, that grilled chicken sandwich..... was the best I've had thus far in all of the 5 boros! It's actually hot, grilled to order, fresh and juicy. The avocado, tomato and lettuce were also fresh and well balanced, no single ingredient overpowering the other. I came late in the day with my mind on the sandy I ordered, and was unaware that many of the popular items were sold out (people came in for sloppy Joes and pretzel sandos, this place has a lot of regulars). We chatted until the shop closed out for the day, making this one of the nost pleasant afternoons in a long time. Needless to say, i will surely be back. Oh... ps. Had a latte and avocado breakfast sandwich. (They have oat milk!) Staff was very nice. They forgot about the sandwich so instead of having enough time to eat it there, I had to grab it to go. Unfortunately, while I really want to support local businesses and love(d) that there was a fusion Filipino/Vietnamese/Chinese-American congee place in the neighborhood, the food & drink at Maya Congee Cafe are simply not satisfactory. I ordered the pork congee bowl to get a taste of what I assumed to be their signature dish, and a flat white to enjoy meanwhile. The congee itself was gummy and not very warm which, when it met the cold, raw, and unseasoned carrots and cold, unseasoned broccoli florets on top, further dropped the temperature of the dish so that at best the dish is lukewarm. The pork itself, while cooked down well, was also not properly seasoned. Finally, the egg that I paid an extra $2 for was confusing - I'm not sure if it's because they forgot it at first, but I paid $2 for a "soft egg," but after the mistake they added a normal hardboiled egg. A hardboiled egg is just not worth $2. Congee is meant to be a warm, indulgent, umami-inspiring dish, and this place really fell short. The flat white was also not at the standard of the usual New York coffee place. That said, I did notice that they carry a number of authentic Asian spices & seasoning inside the store that would be hard to find without making a trek to NY Chinatown or Flushing. So, for any people in the neighborhood who use/appreciate authentic Asian flavors, this place just might carry some of those provisions. Just curious that they themselves don't cook well with any of those flavors. read more

I've never sought out congee. In fact it's not something I've ever really thought about. But today I was under the impression this was one thing when in fact it was another. That's what you get when you use other sources outside of Yelp to check out the menu. Congee is rice porridge. My mother's side is from Charleston SC so I have rice eating in my blood. The toppings are what make this dish versatile and customized to how you're feeling that day. It is literally the most amazing comfort food I've had in a long time. I didn't even know I had a choice like this in my neighborhood. I feel blessed and honored. I went for the vegan mushroom and tofu option. I was smart enough to add the kimchee. Boy was that brilliant!! It's a small place but really laid back and comfortable. I absolutely loved it. And the Matcha was superb too! Please go to this place. Happened to stumble upon this place and boy am I glad I did! In terms of price, quality & taste this place has got it all! It truly is a mini Chinatown right in Bed Stuy. Even if just stopping buy to pick up some noodles and Asian seasoning, or sesame oil and chili crisps you'll find a nice assortment of products with some delicious food and drinks to back it up. I tried the whitefish sandwich and "Gone fishing" whitefish congee bowl. Wow! A surprisingly amazing twist to a rather Americanized bagel favorite. The sandwich is on a sesame hoagie roll, thats been toasted and gives it a nice firmness that holds up to this hearty sandwich. It's loaded with whitefish, & a broccoli slaw mix. Also some furikake thrown on there that really packs on the flavor. The congee bowl was equally delicious. And super hearty! It was my first time having congee and it reminded of a savory fish and grits kind of situation. The rice was in a porridge consistency that coupled with some quinoa. A nice base for the whitefish, veggies, kimchi, & fried onions piled on top. Swallowed this down with a Vietnamese coffee. Will definitely be returning. Bed-Stuy Provisions recently revamped their menu and I was so excited to try it out. Last time I got a sandwich from here must've been an off-day because everything was perfect today. They have updated their menu with both new items and reimaginings of some of the old items (for example, the pork belly sandwich is now a pork confit sandwich and they've added a few different versions of congee!). Soooooo! Delivery congee near me IN Bed-Stuy, YES PLEASE. Congee and jook and any form of rice porridge is the perfect food and BSP has such a cool/delicious/flavorful/fun take on it! I got the GONE FISHING BOWL - congee bowl topped with smoked whitefish salad, broccoli, kimchi, edamame, crispy shallots. The whitefish salad was genius - it added a delicious smokey flavor and they did not skimp on how much they give you. All the other toppings were perfect - I loved the broccoli because it was super finely minced. Also, the edamame was delish and a great addition. Can't wait to try the other flavors and their new pork sandwich, which mentions turmeric in the description (drool!!). Glad I got to try the new menu!! read more

I've stopped by Bed-Stuy Provision twice now and I am hooked. I think it's a little known fact that the guy who was behind Scratchbread (I still think about those grits daily) is now involved with this place! But that means the food is unique, creative, and super good. I first visited on a Sunday after seeing the mouthwatering pictures Bed-Stuy Provisions posts on their Instagram account. I've lived in the neighborhood for two years but never wander over this way and I'm glad I finally did. I like the mix of restaurant/cafe and the specialty goods shop. On my first visit I had Spicy Pork Congee Cup and it was hearty and filling. If you love grits and their texture, congree is for you. On my second visit I had the Breakfast Sando, which is another excellent choice. It came on fresh, crusty bread and I opted to add avocado and pork confit. Don't sleep on this! There's plenty of seating inside but I could see the space filling up during a rush or busy morning. The counter staff was friendly and warm on both of my visits. Here's the thing: I love this place. I love what it used to be before their menu change. The "breakfast" sandwhich was sparse, cold, and honestly unattractive. The meat options may be better but the vegetarian option was disappointing. Two slivers of avocado, a cold hard boiled egg cut in half, and a mix of sauces that I can't even tell what they are. The bread was decent. $8. You would be better off walking to the corner bodega and ordering a Sandwich there. At least it would be hot. Best sandwiches in Bed Stuy, for sure. My 2 current favorites are the PBLAT (Pork Belly Lettuce Avocado Tomato) and the Sloppy Joe. PBLAT has an Asian kick to it with the mayo and Siracha spread. I really feel like I could eat that everyday sometimes... I sense there are some neighbors who do. It was even amazing the second day when I popped it into my sandwich press. The Sloppy Joe is so comforting - the potato roll is chewy, the jalapeños give a great kick. I am sure that would have been great the next day in my sandwich press, but my daughter and I finished that the first day. I have also tried a special sandwich of Berkshire pork with goat cheese and cranberry, and as you can imagine, it was also just as delicious as it sounds. Bed Sty baby! Thank you so much! I had Congee before and fell in love all over again with this yummy rendition. First, it is in BK and a very built-up part of town. Due to the Rona and I'm sure prior parking is always a hairy situation, so do the merry-go-round that is NYC parking. Decor-wise, it is a small cute joint. I love all the variety of veggies and yummy pickled things they have laying around. The service was pleasant and the lady who cashed us out was friendly. They do have a table or two for outdoor dining but I feel like this is a to-go spot. I'm not sure how people make it pass the street without decor their food though. I haven't had any of their non-congee dishes but I cannot imagine any of it being subpar. The porkduckin' congee was an explosion of flavors. It is a great dish!
