After one visit I'm a fan. Got the Mexican Plate (under platillos section) along with a side of chips and guac for almost $15. Everything was tasty! The Mexican Plate comes w/ rice & beans, 4 corn tortillas and two choices of meat. I went with the barbocoa and cochinita pibil which were flavorful, but not at all spicy or salty. The rice and refried beans were also good. If refried isnt your thing they do have black beans. The chips were good, could have used a bit more salt for my personal liking, but good. Same for the guac which had tomatoes (I like it that way) and no spice (suitable to all palettes). Lastly I'll add that the garnish bar has a mix of garnishes and salsas. I order here frequently since I work in the neighborhood and live reasonably close by. I always order for delivery. I've always found it to be a decent solution for myself, but after receiving a burrito for my vegetarian kid that included meat for the SECOND time I won't be giving them any more of my business. You can't even get them to pick up the phone to give feedback, and DoorDash customer service was beyond useless. Super disappointed. read more

Probably the best Mexican food I've had in Minneapolis. The menu is pretty massive, but so far I've only tried the tacos and tamales. Choose your meats and toppings and they'll serve up your food fast, cafeteria style. I opt to put on my own toppings, as there a station that's stacked with all the goodies--cilantro, onion, pickled carrots, guacamole, pico de gallo and several different types of house made salsas. And some of the salsas are seriously super spicy! So be careful. The atmosphere is fun and inviting, too, with several different areas themed differently. There's even a large bar area in the back. I love this Maya Cuisine location on Central. They've got a lot going on inside: cafeteria-style ordering, dining area that feels like you're in a Mexican courtyard, a more formal dining area with full service, and a full bar. Most importantly: hot tamales. Maya serves authentic staples from pozole to tacos to tamales. You can order items individually or as plates with rice and beans. All the variety! There are so many proteins to choose from, and I personally love their carne asada because it's grilled to order, and their cochinita pibil, which is slow roasted pork shoulder. Their tamales are soft and spicy. Like, really spicy! I love them. I also like their salsa bar which is basically like a buffet of sauces and fixin's, including pickled veggies and corn salad. The line can get long during peak hours and ordering can be overwhelming your first time, but def give them a shot if you like authentic Mexican eats. read more

I finally got to try this place out. Unfortunately I didn't think it was that good. Apparently, there's two sides: a fast casual chipotle style side and a restaurant/bar side. We went to the restaurant side. The service was decent, given how busy they were. They serve complimentary tortilla chips and a range of salsa/jalapenos. They were pretty good. The orange spicy salsa was the spiciest of them all. They were all solid salsas though. As far as the main dish. I got the pork in green chili with sides of rice, tortilla and beans. The porn in chili was not good in my opinion. It was one of the 3 plates that they recommended me. The pork was tough and dry. Quality or the way they cooked it was not good. The rice and beans were fine. Portions were good as well, but taste of the dish was not good. It's sour as expected. So if you don't like sour, don't get it. My girlfriend got this thin steak one, but it was not good. It was tough and had no taste. It just tasted salty. I would try the fast casual side again, but probably won't. read more

I've had dinner at their Rosedale location (thumbs up), but my friends and I met up here for their Sunday brunch buffet and it was really interesting. This was not typical brunch fare; I found it quite exotic! And there are TONS of options. They had a whole section with four or five different kinds of meat, just stewing in yummy spices and very tender. I don't even know what kind of meat it all was but it was nicely prepared! There was also a section that had some different combinations, and I should emphasize that they were already-combined combinations, of tortillas, cheese, eggs, sausage, onions, and potatoes. Just, like, different dishes of that kind of thing. I filled my plate with a few of those options and yum. There is a salsa bar with a lot of different sauces (the orange Maya salsa was popular at our table, and pretty fiery), and a section with different kinds of hard-shell tortilla thingies, including tostadas with some toppings on them, and some meat and queso and salsa topping for those. There's also an American-style waffle maker station. You really have a lot of options here! The ambiance is pleasant, although there really wasn't very much room for us at our table. And although we got there right as they were opening and were therefore not crowded at first, we didn't see much in the way of employees bussing tables or anything. It was about $15, paid up front. First time here and I left happy and impressed with not just the service, but also the food. When you enter, they have a chipotle like service in the front where you can choose to build your own taco, burrito, taco salad or whatever. Then, you head to the back by the bar where they have table seating for dining in. They also have an outside patio as well as a full bar. The decor in the restaurant was all just perfect. Very much everything I would picture a Mexican restaurant to be decked out with. They had a great selection of Hispanic music playing as well. The ambience and the lighting of the restaurant were subtle and casual. Food: They bring you a plate of chips and salsa when you first get seated then, the waiter comes and asks you for drinks. I had their mango y chamoy margarita and it was delicious! Huge drink and you can definitely taste the liquor in this drink. Lol. I drunk on an empty stomach so 10 minutes in I was already feeling the drink as I ate. The elote was delicious. Tacos were bomb too and so was the chicken enchilada I had. Salsa was on point. I asked for a spicier salsa in which I believe is a habanero based salsa with avocado. It definitely had a bite if you like spicy! Overall, great experience. Wonderful waiter. He helped me out allot with what to get regards food since it was my first time there. Super friendly. Great space and definitely great for groups! Excellent food! This female-owned restaurant is one of our favorites. We love their tamales, and their guacamole. I only wish they had my favorite, fish tacos! We recently got takeout, and it was wonderful. I tried one each of the vegetarian tamales, they were all really great. Before the pandemic, we visited inside the location, and that was awesome as well. The margaritas were really good, and the ambience felt very authentic. Definitely one of our go to places in the neighborhood. read more

When you're hungry right now and need food right now, going through the cafeteria line at Maya is a great option! The staff is great and get your food going quickly. They have plenty of entree items, meat and vegetarian options, and so much salsa! The food overall is pretty good and you won't really regret what you pick. If you can't decide, go with a platter so that you can have a little mix of everything! The hot salsa is very hot. And we like spicy. We were happy, even with our mouths on fire. And when they say that a certain meat option is spicy, they're not lying. Again we will really enjoy spicy food but if you are someone that only likes a little spice - I would stick to medium! The best part of this place is the salsa / toppings bar! There's a wide range of salsas with varying spice levels. The meat quality was just okay. The al pastor wasn't cut from a spit, but was just laying in the cafeteria style container. The carne asada they grilled on the spot, but the flavors for both meats were just kind of lacking for me. My boyfriend ordered the Mexican plate with the house meats and said it was rather dry. His stomach was upset after eating here. We got here around 7 last night and it wasn't busy at all. They had $5 margaritas and she made me one with pineapple and coconut- 10/10 delicious! The chips and salsa were wonderful- and my food when it did come out was great. I ordered fish tacos and I would get that again they were heavenly. I also tried their flan- OMG+YUM. Service was s-l-o-w...I would say the tacos took an hour, 20 mins to get the drink. With that said I think this is a new fav spot, that's how good the food and drinks were! read more

Went in to get some food and asked pretty clearly I didn't want any spice on my elotes, just extra mayo and cheese, (paid for the extra) they didn't put ANY mayo barely any cheese and spice on every single one. Ordered chicken quesadilla with NO vegetables and Ilsure enough there was a bunch of vegetables paid for lettuce on the side and what do you know when I got home there was no lettuce. I am honestly pretty upset because now I am 59$$ in and cannot eat a single thing I ordered. Never going back . Place was pretty empty so it's not like they were swamped because than I would understand and not be upset whatsoever but I was the only other person than 2 more people one already seated one ordered after me. I'm visiting from out of state. Decided to try one of the local Mexican restaurants. Maya Cuisine sounded awesome based on the reviews. They have a front section which you walk up to order and back section where you have a server. We sat in the back. They had a buffet going on but we wanted to order from the menu. Spoiler alert: we should have sat in the front section. Our server was terrible. Inattentive. Barely stopped by our table. He took my glass to get me a refill and never came back with it. We had to flag him down to get our check. I wish I had the heart to stiff someone. Oh....maybe the food was so spectacular that I could overlook the terrible service. Right? Wrong. This has to be some of the blandest Mexican food that I've ever had. Chorizo is supposed to have flavor! The cheese was not good. Nopales (cactus) was good. Hard to mess that up. The pozole was decent. The lime helped with that. My tamale was soggy. Salsa lacked flavor. I had high expectations. This place was far from meeting that. I should mention the elote was good. Throw some positive in there. I wish we would have sat in the front. At least there could be no complaint of horrible service. I just don't get how this place is rated so high. Maybe it's people who haven't had great Mexican food. Edit: Rarely do I feel compelled to change the rating of a restaurant without it being after a second visit but I'm making a special exception. I'm changing my original rating from a 3 to a 2. Why? After having a great dining experience before we left the area, it only highlighted how bad the experience was here. YUM! Best brunch ever last Saturday! Think of a Chipotle style ordering but more authentic. You can either choose to dine in or a order at the counter and sit down and eat. The menu is pretty simple, located as a tri-fold pamphlet right in front of the glass. You tell the nice lady what you want and go from there. NOTE - there's a buffet at the end too where you can add additional salsa, hot sauce, and pico. With that being said, there is no fixins such as cheese or guac. Extra guac is around $2 something. There is also two water dispensers with cups at the end along with napkins and eating utensils. We ordered: Single Beef Tongue Taco - Corn flour was fresh at first but after a few minutes on deciding what toppings you want, as soon as you sit down the tortilla gets cold. The meat was not bad, I just wanted more. Ground Beef Taco Salad - Ground beef needed more seasoning, it was very bland. I needed to add all kind of fixins, to spice up life a little. THE TACO SHELL was very crunchy and you can tell it was fried that morning. I think that was one of my favorites part of our lunch! Horchata - Wasnt the best I've had, but did the justice of wanting something sweet towards the end of your meal. I will be coming back, that's for sure! read more

We're new to Minneapolis, from L.A., and my wife and I wanted good Mexican. Maya Cuisine checked a lot of boxes for us. Service We're vegan and many restaurant workers have no idea what that means. The man at Maya Cuisine did. He calmly walked us through the dishes that were either vegan or could be made vegan -- no rush. He went on to tell us about the sauces and salsas at the salsa bar and how the sauces became progressively hotter if they were on the lefthand side. This man behaved towards us as if we were the only customers he had that day. Impressive. When it came to ordering our food, he was quick to customize each meal for us. He prides himself on this, and rightly so. Later while we were eating, he came to our table, asked us how the food was, and talked about his roots in southern Mexico and coming to Minneapolis sixteen years ago. The Food My mother-in-law got the beef quesadilla, and while the quesadilla was BIG and my mother-in-law is small, she ate the whole thing. Including the salad and avocado side dish. My wife tackled three vegan tacos, and I opted for a pinto bean burrito with fried peppers and onions, corn, and salsa. I can only speak to the food I ate -- and it was mouth-filling and satisfying. The beans could have had more salt, but this is a quibble. The kitchen is open, a rare thing anywhere, so there are no secrets. A glance at it told you the owners keep a clean and orderly place. The Ambience The three of us came to Maya Cuisine a little after 1 p.m. on a Friday and the establishment was quiet (perfect if you have an 81-year-old elder who doesn't hear well! ). If you like to talk with your friends and family while eating, I recommend this place at this time and day. At the entrance are 5 or 6 booths. Farther back sits a spacious dining area with a bar. The place is deceptively large, bright, clean. It is not candlelight and violins, but you knew that from reading other reviews. Would I go back? In a sec. It's a rare thing to find vegan Mexican, and even more rare to find good vegan Mexican. While my vegan burrito was satisfying, I leave it my non-vegan friends to weigh in on the meat dishes. read more

This place used to be a strong 5-star contender but with its expansion and opening of the bar, Maya Cuisine has lost its charm. It used to be my FAVORITE restaurant in the cities for Mexican food. I used to get Mexican plate (rice, side of black beans, fajita, chicken medium and hot) here almost twice every week and their consistency in taste and portion size were its strengths. However since 2 months, the same servers who were once polite have lost patience and become cold to customers. The portion size has also become smaller. The last time I went here, the food didn't taste the same either. If the trend continues, I'd prefer going to chipotle to get a bowl for $7 than to get a similar sized Mexican plate from here at $11. read more

Maya features tasty and authentic Mexican cuisine with friendly staff and a nicer-than-expected restaurant interior ambiance. The experience here is a bit confusing if it's your first time. The first half of the restaurant is more casual (order at the counter, then eat your food in a booth cafeteria-style). Meanwhile, the second half of the restaurant is more upscale (order from a menu, table service, etc.). The flexibility is nice - you can pick whichever experience you'd prefer - but it makes it a bit confusing as a guest. Also, keep in mind the menu options are completely different for the two halves of the restaurant. I've been mostly to the casual half. There, they offer tasty tacos, burritos, alambres, platters, etc. You can pick from a variety of meats and toppings to fill your carrier of choice. They also have a great salsa bar for adding flavor and heat to your dish. The prices here are fair for the quantity you get, and the quality is better than most casual cafeteria-style Mexican eateries. On the whole, Maya is a nice place to visit for a customizable Mexican cuisine experience. Stop by if you're in the area. read more

This place is so pretty inside, very colorful and unique! I always thought that when I owned my own house, every room would be a different color, and this place is pretty much like that, and very bright happy colors too. When you get inside, the way you order is similar to Subway and Chipotle, wait, but not. It's more similar to Jimmy Johns. Well, it's a combination of both. When you get down to the end of the long buffet looking lane, you pay for your food. There isn't fountain drinks, but there is a small soda selection behind the "pay station". There is also a little mini buffet where people can get their toppings or condiments if you want any. There are also a few "Water jugs" to help yourself too. One has limes inside the water, the other is just plain water. I had the Quesadilla, TT had a taco bowl, and JT had a Sandwich looking thing, but I can't remember the name. My apologies. Anyway, the food was delicious! Nice and hot, some spicy some not, we were all pleased, which was fantastic. Clearing our table was a little issue. We didn't know where to bring our trays, but also didn't want to seem rude and just leave them there if that wasn't what we were supposed to do. We did see two other tables leave their trays at their tables. It just didn't seem right to us, so we decided to ask before doing anything. there is apparently a "Dumping" station at the front where you come in and order. So we did do that, which it would have been nice if there was a sign or something, but no harm no foul. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place, the food was delicious, and it was a very reasonable price. roughly 35 plus tip for 3 people, plenty of food (leftovers) and beverages. May is a is a very authentic Hispanic restaurant. Just read some of the great reviews about Maya for yourself and you'll get a good feel for what it has to offer. However, there seems to be one AMAZING thing that is left out that you NEED to know about: Sunday Brunch They have a Sunday all you can eat buffet. I ate stuff I've never even heard of, and everything was incredible. My suggestion, if you're going to try Maya, try it in a Sunday morn/early afternoon. read more

They serve authentic Mexican food. Most dishes are ready to be served and anything you order will be delicious and fresh.

Maya is great if you're looking for some decent Mexican food either quickly at their order at the counter part or their sit-down area in the back. There is a weekend buffet as well but we haven't opted into that yet. There are 2-for-1 Margaritas for their happy hours which are huge (not strong in tequila). Their enchiladas are my go-to item to order as well as their tamales. The tamales are the best item on the menu in our opinion. The nachos are nothing to write home about so skip those. You get free chips and salsa which is nice but don't fill up on them. =) read more

Looking for a quick lunch time stop. Try Maya for a great grab and go option. The place is a sit down restaurant but also has a easy ordering counter as well. The portions are big too. I love their chicken quesadillas. This place is definitely not lacking sides. They have a special area just for all the fixings near the cashier. Every type of salsa for you to try with little cups to put them in too. The restaurant sit down area is also fantastic. They have a huge menu and the service here has always been very attentive. I was in the area for work and almost missed discovering Maya Cuisine. It's quietly located right on Central but could easily be missed if you don't peer inside or know any better (like myself). First impression is deceiving if you are strolling past this place. Luckily, I always trust Yelp to find me a tasty spot on the fly and when I hear my stomach growl. Once you walk in, you find yourself inside a large Mercado style bustling space complete with a cafeteria style counter, a "buffet" style sauce and condiment station, small bench seating right up front and a huge area with table seating and the rest of the restaurant and bar nestled towards the back of the space. The food choices are a plentiful! Traditional Mexican cuisine including pozoles, all sorts of tamales and of course your typical burritos and tacos. I went with their much touted "award" winning Taco al Pastor (Tender and plentiful delicious pork), a lengua taco (a little tongue action never hurt anyone) and a chicken medium spicy tamale (corn masa and savory chicken not the sweet corn,I tend to associate with Mexican tamales) which was nicely wrapped in a banana leaf. I opted to make mine a meal with added rice and refried beans and also added an Orchata (rice water beverage with cinnamon and sugar) all for under $15. The chicken tamale was delicious, the masa moist and the chicken nicely flavored. It reminded me of the Salvadoran tamales that my Grandma used to make. And no one can compare to Abuelita. The Taco al pastor was also yummy and I can see why it is award winning! The Lengua or beef tongue taco was ok but I was kinda disappointed that the meat was not crispy. Lengua is popping when it's nice and crispy and caramelized, as far as I am concerned. If not it can taste rubbery and bland. That being said, my meal was worth planning for me to come back and next time dragging my hubby with me. The service was speedy and friendly too. read more

On a plan to eat at every Hispanic restaurants on central ave in North East Mpls. For this challenge, to keep things consistent, i only be sampling tacos and the condiments at each restaurant. Barbacoa, al pastor, and lengua is what I ordered today. The tacos were topped with onion, Cilantro, avocado sauce, corn, pickled onion, red sauce (moderate hot), and guacamole. The tacos came with black bean. Barbacoa, not impressed since it was bland. I wanted the tripa, but has to settle with lengua since they don't offered tripa. The beef togue texture was good: tender. The seasoning was bland and you don't taste the tongue flavor, which was strange. The al pastor was seasoned well and the Pineapple added a sweetness to the spices and fat. It was disappointing that the al pastor was made out of grounded pork instead of the tradition thinly sliced pork pieces. The bean was cooked tender, but has no flavor and bland. They could of made it better by just adding salt/pepper. They offered a huge selection of condiments, which was awesome and saved the meal for me. Horchata: I missed drinking this, so I had to grab a cup. The sweetness level was perfect for my liking since most restaurants tend to put too much sugar. I didn't need to add ice to dilute it down. You could taste the rice and cinnamon flavors and nope was over powered another. The restaurant has plenty of room for patrons, the design was unique since it incorporated plenty of South American arts and flares. The bar was inviting and the salsa and bachata music was great. Alright y'all, we know by now that I'm big into brunch and this one felt like a stretch, even for me. But we're running out of brunch buffet places in MSP (if you know of one, let me know!) so this floated to the top of the list. I am sorry I waited so long to try it. Holy. Cow. The food was so good! And for a buffet, I was expecting mediocre and it far surpassed my expectations! I was also impressed by the variety of foods they had - so much to choose from, and it was all delicious. I felt like I could have sat there for hours. It's a little bit of a strange setup - you pay before you sit down, and then you're left to your own devices. I couldn't figure out where to find water, so I resigned myself to the mango juice instead. Still amazing. They stop by occasionally and clean up the table, but that's about it. Super hands-off, which is nice since I was able to avoid the judgement/shame of eating 4 plates full of enchiladas. I will absolutely be back, and now that I'm a pro (and can find the water), I imagine this will be a whole lot better. read more
