Hearing all the good news about this place, we rushed uphill for our first experience. Basically a cookie and cake place, with the cake samples out to taste not putting forward much showing. We had an almond bar and coffee. OK, but nothing special. What seems to be special here is that it is the only bakery on the PV peninsula, and therefore a captive if wealthy audience. Tables were fine for downing your selection, but nothing to compare with the white table cloths and superior service of a German or Austrian pastry shop. Seemed for like a place for moms to bring kids for a fast fill-up to stop whining, rather than a spot for a relaxed afternoon carbo and sugar rush. If you live in San Pedro, as we do, absolutely no reason to go out of your way to come here. Stick to Ramona's with far better pastries. read more

The absolute worst customer service ever received by the owner of the store! Per their guidelines I was in the store 48 hours ahead of time to order a birthday cake for my son's upcoming 6th birthday. I was informed by the owner that since they are overwhelmed by the holidays, they cannot take an order for a photo cake and have it available in 2 days, nor where they able to pipe the design on a cake. In fact, they were no longer taking orders due to the Christmas Holiday. No where in the store or on the front windows does it state there is a last day to place an order for the Holidays. There were only 2 revised Holiday Store Closure Times posted by the front door. My son's birthday is 12/26, a date they are closed, so i was already going to be picking up a cake 2 days ahead of time. Had I known that I was unable to place an order on 12/22 for a 12/24 pickup, I would have ordered earlier. The owner could care less that I had been a loyal customer of Mayer's Bakery since 2002 and (I know they haven't owned it since then) is completely aloof to any principles of customer service. read more

I very rarely write reviews, but feel all should know. This is a bakery I frequent often as I live close by and never had any issues. Today I met the owner who wouldn't make an exception on an $18 charge to add a few icing balloons to an already made cake($39). Mayers already adds the writing at no cost. I even offered to pick it up the next day so the decorators wouldn't have to stop what they were doing to add the decorative icing balloons. Instead of making the exception, the owner lost the sale and now lost my business and any future referrals he would have gotten. I'm guessing it would have taken all of 5 minutes to add the balloons. Maybe 7 minutes. You tell me... is 5-7 minutes plus materials worth $18? Is not adding it for a frequent customer, worth losing a sale and future business and recommendations? read more

What a disaster... They overcharged me for cookies that I did not receive. I was thinking of ordering a cake for my son's birthday, which is coming up a few weeks but now I'm not so sure... I am going to call tomorrow to see if can get the price adjusted since I never got some of the cookies I really wanted. This woman came up as a girl was assisting me and sent her to make a drink as opposed to letting her finish with my transaction, which I where I believe the confusion stemmed from. Seriously, though? I go here every week for breakfast with a fairly large group of friends. Despite the large group, the staff is always incredibly friendly and accommodating, and they don't seem to mind us taking over a couple of their tables each week. Wonderful atmosphere, great safe place to hang out, and amazing food! Highly recommend the combo breakfast burrito if you're going for breakfast, but everything I've ever tried off the menu is to die for! Meh... Cookies & the piece of cake I got (forgot what cake it was, it was that unforgettable) were not good. They tasted dry, cheap and overly sugary. The ingredients used seemed of low quality. Mayers bakery has been a well known and well liked quality bakery for as long as I can remember, I've frequented it since my childhood40+ years. So, I went into Mayers for my son's birthday cake, and got a carrot cake since he doesn't like chocolate...and the cake we experienced was greasy and had the taste of shortening. My husband didn't think I got it from a bakery, he thought I got it from the grocery store. The next day, I called up the bakery to speak with the manager, she was completly unhelpful! She basically said that's what our carrot cake is like, and that's it! No offer of my money back or even a replacement option. I hung up with the intent of never returning to that bakery again! After years of great experiences there, the management must have changed and now it is a sub-par bakery....so very sad! read more

This past Saturday, I received a call from one of my best friends. It was her wedding day, and she realized she forgot to pick up the (ceremonial) wedding cake. The wedding planner, and wedding party forgot, in the chaos, as well. The well known Los Angeles bakery didn't call to remind them, nor to tell them they were closed for the 4th of July holiday. She was standing in Gelsons, crying, with a Independence Day cake in her hands. I told her that I knew of a local bakery, called them and they were open. They said they could, in the matter of a few hours, make a cake and have it ready to go by noon! She called, ordered and I was a hero. The cake was beautifully simple, delicious and we all owe a debt of gratitude to the entire Mayer's staff. Ordered three full-sheet cakes from them. I'm not going to lie, the cake was good. But the service was horrible. The owner has some kind of attitude problem. She absolutely does not make eye contact or engage with any of her customers. The staff is friendly enough, but definitely are not trained to handle large orders. They were very unhelpful in explaining the different options available for the cake (filling, frosting, etc.). They insist on standing up and having you complete an order; what they should do is politely take you to the side and explain the different options available and suggest ideas. We had to ask them for everything (suggestion books, pricing, frosting colors, etc), which was definitely not what my family was expecting after paying a couple hundred dollars. When the cake finally did arrive, our family member's name was misspelled on both cakes (even though we spelled it for them in-store AND in follow-up emails), and punctuation was left out on one cake because they ran out of room. We received no apologies. Basically, my advice is: If you have a sweet tooth and want a cookie or donuts go here. IF you have any kind of serious order (READ: plan to spend upwards of $300 for a graduation or wedding cake), you're better off going to Porto's. Much friendlier and more competent customer service. I've ordered 2 cakes from this bakery over the years. Not the best but they looked okay and it was convenient. I went in there today to see if I could order donuts along with the cake/cupcake order I wanted to place for my daughters 1st bday party. I asked the girl behind the counter (who was nice) if I could possibly get the glaze donuts that had chocolate frosting with another color that they already have along with my upcoming order for the birthday party. The answer from the girl behind the counter was a strong NO. This was after she went in the back to see if the owner would okay it. She told me I would have to get the donuts that come with the white or pink frosting. Apparently it is too difficult for Mayer's to add an already made frosting to a different donut. I guess they'd rather lose a 300 dollar order instead of go out of their way just a little to help a customer. read more

Came here to get a cake for my Mom's birthday, ordering a week in advance. I was quite disappointed. The inside of the cake was fine: little dry but flavorful. The outer portions of the cake were terrible though. It was hard and nasty: all the texture of chocolatey tar. The worst part is, when I brought up the issue, their "reference cake" of sorts was completely different in texture yet they denied that it was any different. Worst experience in any bakery in my life. Not only do they not care about you as a customer, they lie and try to milk more money out of you. If you make an order for cookies, make sure they put every single detail in writing. If it isn't written "decorated" then they will leave your baked goods totally plain when you pick it up. Even if you had a discussion prior to purchasing, every detail must be written or it will not be honored. Do not let them do anything or promise anything without written proof. They will try to charge you for every little thing. No sense of customer satisfaction, and the owner is seemingly a major penny pincher. Had it been our mistake, it would have been fine. The issue is that the product and price was misrepresented, and we were still being asked to pay up or go home. Lesson learned. Just avoid this place. Highly NOT recommended. read more

WORST. BAKERY. EVER! I was from out of town and in the area for my wedding. This bakery was recommended as a good local bakery to get a wedding cake from. I emailed them a picture of exactly what I wanted and they confirmed and assured me they could make the cake. It was a simple layer cake with three colors of frosting for each layer in our wedding colors. Nothing fancy as my now husband and I are more modern and don't favor cakes that look like hat boxes. They said there would be no problem and to pick it up the day before. When I arrived at the bakery the cake they gave me looked like the work of a 13 year kid! It was 8 layers tall, leaning, and they has used a frosting that melts so all the colors were running together. The cake looked like it was crying. They set it in an open box with no top to protect it and had had it sitting out for a while. The woman at the counter said it would need a refrigerator and must be kept cold because the frosting melts, which it already was because of the running colors. Needless to say I was shocked! Who is the world makes a wedding cake with frosting that can melt and run!?! Not one person from the bakery ever called me to discuss using a frosting that melts and it was not what we talked about on the phone when I order the cake nor was disclosed when I emailed they the picture. They never said they were having trouble with the design, which was really simple. I had to prepay the cake for them to make it, so was forced to take it because they refused give a refund. My MOH and I tried to figure out how to make the thing work, but couldn't as it got worse and worse without a refrigerator (again I was from out of town and at a hotel), so we gave it away to some homeless people on our way to the grocery store. The vanilla cupcakes we got at there were a lot better than the wet mess that cake was, but it certainly wasn't the wedding cake I had envisioned. Please let this be a warning to future brides to be very careful with this bakery. They employ armatures and they don't communicate. They will steal you blind. They continue to make quality cakes and bakery items I grew up with in the 60's and 70's. Mayer's is a family bakery and has that small town feel, you can come in and order cookies for your child's class and pick up a fresh croissant for yourself as well. Sunday morning is usually a good time to have a donut! Mayer's prior reviews seemed impressive enough...so here I am. Even before I get in the door, I have two groups of people "cut me off" on the sidewalk just to get in the door ahead of me. So sad that people can be in a needless hurry. Why do I say needless? Simply because once they are inside and are being helped (and I'll use that term loosely), they just stare at the showcase filled with (stale) baked goods. It's like they were in a trance. Not one customer, not two customers....3 customers....just staring. It was like something out of a movie where time stands still. The 3 groups finally make their decision. The first group decides on a cake. The clerk totals the order and "oh wait" can I have a cookie. The clerk totals the order again and "oh wait"...(this happened 5 times!). Turning to the second party that wasn't ahead of me until she cut me off at the door, they're still deciding...and after 5 minutes, "I want 1 chocolate cupcake". Hey, where's the "please"? And as soon as her order is filled, the clerk turns his back on me - knowing full well I had been waiting patiently whilst that prize chocolate cupcake was being chosen - then he waits on another party who just happened to walk in the door. Well, after all, he was at the far end of the counter where the door is. Why would he want to walk all the way back (7 steps) towards the rear end of the counter to take my order? Sure enough, he serves ANOTHER party who walks in the door before coming back to me, however, finally he asks me what I want. (After I left, I realized that he and I didn't have the same ethnic background - and that all the customers who he served before me and after my arrival were all of his ethnic background. Hey, this is 2012! Was I being racially profiled in a Bakery? I mean, yes, I certainly look mediterranean - and have been mistaken by TSA as being of Eastern Mediterranean descent and have been pulled over by airport security for a second screening - however, this is still just a Bakery...and I only want some donuts! Being that I worked and traveled around the world for most of my career, I rarely see people as ethnic anymore - everyone looks the same to me...I'm thinking that is why it didn't occur to me til now that I was being profiled...OH well - I digress! I place my order: 1 Raised Glazed Donut - 1 Raised Chocolate Frosted Donut - 1 Cranberry Muffin. The clerk asks again, "What kinda donut?" 1 Raised Glazed Donut and 1 Raised Chocolate Frosted Donut"...and "A Cranberry Muffin, please". He replies, "Is a bag OK?", Me - "Yes please". Clerk, "Uh, what came after the glazed donut?" Me - "1 Raised Chocolate Frosted Donut and 1 Cranberry Muffin please". Clerk reaches under the counter for a donut and says, "2 donuts. Anything else?" ME - "YES PLEASE! 1 Cranberry Muffin - PLEASE". He reaches into the showcase again and closes up the bag. He rings it up and announces, "$3.50". I hand him a five and place $1 in the tip jar as an act of good faith (obviously there was some bad karma in the bakery and that was my way of getting it turned around.) Clerk glares and hands me my change silently to my words, "Enjoy your afternoon". I come home to a gleeful pair who are excited to dig into the donuts and muffin. The donuts are stale!!! We are talking DAYS old - not the 1 day old special. And the muffin is a rock hard very stale "CHOCOLATE CHIP". Yes, it's out of the way, however, Mayers is getting a visit later today....with the returned baked goods (or should I say baked-bads?) That will be my final visit to Mayers (unless they take the opportunity to provide me with a gesture of excellent customer service....). Stay tuned! read more
