I used Mayer's Bakery 16 years ago for my daughter's baby shower cake. The cake was fantastic, as I remembered it, so of course, I was excited to walk in and find some sweet treats to take home. I spent around $30 (more than I planned on spending) on little treats. I was surprised that I didn't enjoy much of my selection. I rarely eat sweets. Not for any reason in particular, I just don't crave sweets like that, but when I do, it had better be good. I bought a sugar skull cookie. Normally, I shy away from cookies like these because they're super hard and taste terrible. These were no different. The girl helping me was really nice and she said she liked them, especially the icing. So I went ahead and got one. I took one bite and tossed it. It was not good. At all. I also bought some Italian Wedding Cookies. I think they called them something else, but they were cookies covered in powdered sugar. They weren't that great, either. I only bought three. Took a bite of one and tossed the remaining two and a half in the trash. I bought a pound of pecan cookies. These are not regular sized cookies, but half dollar size. I asked for a pound, but a pound of these small cookies equates to a dozen. I didn't get that. Twelve equals a pound?? It seems like you'd get more of these smaller cookies. But okay...either way, they were good, but I didn't love them. Although they were the best thing out of what I bought, they weren't my favorite. I could only stand eating a few and into the trash those went to join its other friends from the bakery. I also got what I thought was a chocolate lace cookie that was rolled. Imagine my surprise when I bit into it and tasted some kind of coffee flavored filling...disgusting!! And I like coffee, but this filling was so nasty! The girl didn't tell me that they were filled with something. I tried to eat the cookie around it, but it was too much trouble. Into the trash they went, too. What pisses me off is that they were the most expensive item, at $10 for 4 of them! I wish the girl had told me the price, because when you look at them, there's no way they're worth that much, let alone when you taste them. Lastly, I bought a slice of strawberry cheesecake. I thought that I could not go wrong there...ugh! God help me...wrong, again! It was super hard, even when I let it sit out at room temperature for 4 hours! I make cheesecake and mine is soft and creamy. I can't imagine why this one was like a hard slice of cake, not cheesecake and it was still hard after 4 hours. That makes me think it was old! I was truly disappointed in my selection. None of it was worth what I paid for it and as other Yelpers have said, it's expensive. The cupcakes are a fave at my work place. Whenever I bring these in, they're gone significantly quicker than cupcakes from anywhere else. They are fluffy and moist and the frosting to cake proportion is perfect. Not overly sweet either - has people coming back for seconds and even thirds. They come in chocolate or vanilla cake with chocolate or vanilla frosting. You can either get ones that have rainbow non pareils on them or ones that are decorated according to holiday. I was in Meyers for the first time since last Valentines. I was SOOO disappointed! I try not to eat sweets, so I have stayed away all year, but my daughter needs her fix of their wonderful Valentine cookies. They were always so beautifully decorated I couldn't decide which ones to buy, and always came out with more than I planned!. But this year???? Yuck. Do they have the teenagers decorating them? Damnit..I'm telling you, my customer just wants me to be a fatty! She surprised my coworkers and I with a HUGE box of freakin' ginormous cookies. One cookie is literally bigger than my face. She bought 18 cookies, and it was season decorated! Leaf cookies with the colors of fall, and just giant m&m chocolate cookies...mm.. The cookies itself were decent. Seeing as most of the reviews are for the cakes, this one is about the delicious pastries Mayer's bakery offers. I was walking from the grocery store to TJ Maxx and spotted this bakery out of the corner of my eyes. Walking by I saw how good the desserts looked and popped in to have a closer look. The girls working were super nice and answered all my questions, "whats this? mmmhhh and that? and so on. Seeing as I wasn't really hungry, deciding between the oversized chocolate croissants or the equally large almond topped, raspberry filled one, I went with a simple pecan pastry instead,$3. Very good, fresh, soft, not too sweet, made me wish I had bought more. The store reminds me of a german bakery, kind of dark, very simple, no decor or frills, just simple but perfectly baked goods, sometimes it's nice to not fall for the hype of crazy names or colors and enjoy some simple baked goodness and that is exactly what Mayer's delivers, I'll be back for more when I'm in the area again! read more

Mayer's is a PV institution... well, it was while still owned and operated by the Mayer Family. Where as the baked goods selection is still pretty good and tasty, the current owners seem comfortable with turning it over to a couple of teenagers (at least on Sunday morning), with no real people skills and no idea what they are doing in front of an espresso machine. Suggestion #1? Hire a barista (or anyone who's worked at Starbucks for a week). My son and I came for brioche buns and decided to have a casual coffee and croissant. I ordered a cappuccino with a double shot of espresso and what I got was tantamount to something you'd expect from 7-11, weak, no froth or flavor and to top it off no raw sugar to be had... who doesn't have raw sugar in LA? My son order a red-eye with a double shot, and it too was bilge water. I won't get into the cost of this swill.. Maybe they don't care about the 10+ empty tables, while other places are packed with Sunday morning coffee drinkers, but if it were my business (at a time when coffee has become an art form) I'd want to capitalize on a portion of that business. My coworker used to bring these wonderful donuts and danish trays -- I don't know what the danish is called but it was like a foot long and topped with pecans. It was so good that I jotted down the bakery name. I was finally in the neighborhood and dropped by. The danish was as good as I remembered. But they had no donuts!! I got some plain and almond croissants instead and those were great. But I really miss the donuts. Fresh, light, fluffy. Please bring back your donuts! Mayer's Bakery is my childhood bakery. My family would always get cookies and cakes from Mayer's for special occasions. It's our family tradition to grab a piece of fruit cake from Mayer's during the holidays. I am home for the Thanksgiving holiday and decided to stop by for a breakfast donut. The donuts are pricey at $1 each and the chocolate donut I purchased was very well-done (meaning, almost burnt). I wasn't very impressed with it. It was the last chocolate donut in the case so I'm sure the good ones were all sold out. Regardless of the quality of the donut, I feel like the size of the donut was decent; the donut was fluffy. I'd come back for a donut another day and maybe I'll try the cakes too. I'm sure the quality of the baked goods have changed since I was a kid so I'll update my review at a later time. The highlight of my childhood was heading to Mayer's for fabulous cookies and cupcakes (clearly it takes so little to make me happy). And through the years, all of my birthday cakes and even my wedding cake came from Mayer's, and they were all fantastic. Mayer's is now a shadow of it's former self. Homey bakery that's usually staffed with pleasant high school students, especially during summer. I tried a bit of the Nutella Croissant, which was very light and had a good schmear of Nutella. Almond Raisin Roll, topped with sliced almonds - If you're a raisin lover, this might be for you. There were lots, around a good tight handful, of raisins inside. This roll itself was okay. Not too sweet, which I appreciated, but the raisins would make it sweeter. I liked the soft and chewy texture. Hazelnut Tart, covered with a hardened chocolate drizzle and topped with chopped hazelnuts - This was very enjoyable, with the soft semi-crumbly cake having a mildly sweet nutty taste. The crust was so good! Perfect crunchy complement to the cake. The price point was still a bit high though; most of the pastries are not made fresh daily, but are still good overall. I thiink some of the cookies are baked fresh daily, though. There are more savory offerings as well, including soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. read more

Absolutely worst customer service I've ever experienced. Ordered a purple Elsa cake and the frosting was the wrong color (blue). I asked if there was anything they could do to fix it or maybe add some purple frosting flowers on to the cake as it is my daughters favorite color. All she asked for was a purple Elsa cake. I showed the receipt that said I ordered a purple Elsa cake. The owner came out and told me the cake is in fact purple, then after arguing he admitted it's not purple but said they don't have purple frosting. It was ridiculous and degrading. I ended up grabbing a display cupcake off their counter with purple frosting on it to call out his lies and he still didn't apologize. At that point I went from mildly disappointed to enraged and asked for a refund. He said no problem but pulled the cake away from me as if he was going to keep it. I had just bought a brand new elsa Barbie doll that was in the center of the cake. I went into the situation calm, hoping we could come to a simple solution and left just furious. Twenty five years ago, Mayer's did our wedding cake and it was fabulous. My husband had complained that the only piece he got to try was that which I hand fed him after the ceremonial cutting. All these years later, I ordered the same cake for our silver wedding anniversary. I requested light pink or light mauve coloured decorative roses, but instead they were a garish pink with bright green leaves. The French butter cream frosting had a very waxy texture that sort of stuck to the mouth and was a challenge washing off of the plates and utensils. The cream cheese filling and ivory cake did not taste fresh. It was by far the worst cake we had ever tasted and an embarrassment to serve our guests. One good thing came out of this. My husband said, "I now don't feel so badly about never having had a a slice at our wedding." Ironically, after verbally giving the person taking the order my credit card information, a charge for over a $1,000 fraudulently appeared on my account. Highly suspect since all my other purchases were through secure websites. read more

They have just celebrated their 40th year in business at this family owned & operated location in Palos Verdes. Their "mayhem week" anniversary celebration rolled the prices back to the sixties, resulting in the consumption of 20,400 donuts and 19,248 brownies at 14 cents each, and 5,005 cups of coffee @ 10 cents. Inside Mayer's are 2 sections: the colorful bakery, with seating, and the wedding cake studio in a separate room. Samples of baked goods are abundant & if it were organic, it would be four stars. The custom cakes are impressive. Their slogan: "If you can imagine it, we can create it - on a cake." 102 Miles Round Trip. @ 31mpg = about $15.00 for gas. Another $15 for a smaller than average pie. Total Cost: About $30. Is it worth it? OH YES! Their cookies are okay. Their donuts are pretty good (though a bit heavy on the baking soda). Their muffins and cupcakes are nice. A bit too sweet for my tastes. All are worth about 3 stars, BUT.... BLUEBERRY PIE is the way to go here IMO. I came here for a cup of coffee one day and saw their blueberry pies. Crust with loads of giant blueberries dumped in. That's it. I was impressed at how real and unaltered it looked so, being a fan of blueberries and my better half being a huge fan of blueberries and sweets, I order one to be made fresh that day and will be picked up by 5pm. $15 dollars???!! Are you F-ing kidding me?! *ugh* I paid it and went to work. At work, I don't get out until 7pm so I had my pie sitting there, waiting for me to fetch it and all I could do was look longingly through the window into the refrigeration case, the box with my name printed large and clear on the side. I went home sad and empty handed. I work in RHE and live in Anaheim and I wasn't due to return to the office until 2 days later. When I placed my order, I asked how many day the pie would last since it has no preservatives added. The woman said 3 days. I return to work 2 days later and get my pie and take it home. 2 days old and I'd say it was STILL worth $15. We finished it in less than 24 hours. I can only imagine how good it would have been had I picked it up on time when it was fresh. I've paid less for freshly made pies and they can't hold a candle to what Mayer's delivered. Best pie I've ever had. Granted I'm not big on sweets and haven't had many pies in my life but of what I've experienced, this place will be where I go for pies. If you're lactose intolerante and have violent pains and massive intestinal evacuations when you drink milk but you're going to have the below listed items, be ready to have a giant glass of milk. It will be 110% worth the aftermath. Chocolate Eclairs are orgasm-worthy with an outstanding bavarian cream. Chocolate Cupcakes with dense dark chocolate cake, ridiculously thick dark chocolate fudge (not frosting), and dark chocolate shavings are better than any guilty sweet pleasure. Chocolate Torte is the sinfully bigger version of the cupcake. Everything else is fine and good and with comparable quality elsewhere but if my Mister wants blueberry pie after work, I'll drive the 2 hours round trip for this one item alone. read more

Their baked goods are ok with decent selection. The problem I have is with Meyer's bakery staff. I came in during Valentine's Day season and I asked if they could add additional Valentines decorations on their regular cupcakes like adding pink and white sprinkles. And of course I would pay extra for it. Immediately one staffer said "no" we don't have that. I am thinking to myself, you are going to tell me that have those colors are available. She could have offer pink, orange, blue or yellow sugar sprinkles which they are on their themed sugar cookies. There wasn't any solutions to accommodate me. It was sad because I have been coming to this place for years. And over the years I have noticed the customer service has been declining. I am not going to waste my time coming here anymore. I walked into a time machine here, I'd not been to Mayer's Bakery for around 20 years (something like that) - and I'm not sure much changed. They have a large variety of baked goodies, cookies, cakes, pastries, donuts, etc. They have seating if you would like to come in, get coffee and eat any of these sugary treats. I came for the cake pops, which was a request for an 11 year old birthday. They make two flavors, chocolate and vanilla. No complaints out of our group! The service was friendly and the box was ready when I arrived. I suggest you call in advance, but they do have a lot of 'things' for walk in orders so there are always options if you don't order in advance. read more

The lettering they put on the cake looked awful, they completely did the color wrong, then claimed that they did exactly as I had requested.
