This is an adorable local cafe in downtown Denton. The staff was all really attentive and kind when we had questions and checked in with us often. Please do make it a point to visit this restaurant if you are close to the courthouse square. It's a favorite of our group. The eggs benedict dishes, lox and bagel (yes to caviar) and caprese sandwich are fantastic. The seasoned potatoes side dish is a must with brunch. Our server Margot made our Mothers Day brunch so special. Also we didn't realize the restaurant closed at 2:00 on Sunday. Came here last weekend for lunch with a friend. I haven't been to the Denton square in years so was pleasantly surprised how many stores and restaurants there were! We both had the chai oat milk latte (mine was dirty and her's was regular). Both were delicious, good chai flavor and really creamy. I ordered the pick two with a slice of quiche Lorraine and a cup of avocado soup. The quiche was delicious, crust was flaky and crispy. You can't really go wrong with the Lorraine flavor of ham and cheese. Good cheese and ham to egg ratio. The avocado soup was really creamy and thick. Almost like a gazpacho but not. It was just ok. I probably wouldn't get it again. It had a slight lemony taste to it, but I feel like it wasn't meant to be a soup The cafe was really cute and has a vintage vibe. Servers were cheerful and attentive. All in all would come back again and recommend coming here for a light lunch or snack. read more

I've been coming here no short of 15 years. I used to really love it and I brought so many people with me over the years. In the last two years things have significantly changed. I do appreciate the refresh that occurred inside however, much of the furniture is still greatly uncomfortable and tired and worn. I was sad that they took down the billing fabric from the ceiling because I thought it was a nice soft touch with the glowing lights behind. The space is wide open now and doesn't have a quaint feel. But most importantly the food has tremendously gone downhill. We used to come for the beer bread, they don't have it anymore. I used to come for the quiche, often times now they either don't have it or as of late told me they're not serving that anymore either. Used to come for the salad salads, but the salads have greatly diminished in their quality and presentation yet pricing remains the same if not higher. I used to come for their unique tea selections, all of which have been eliminated. I also used to come for these little tiny bites of heaven also known as homemade mini muffins that were offered to each table. More times than not I would buy a half dozen or a dozen to take home. They are no longer offering the complementary nor the purchased muffins. All in all, I am sad to say that I won't be returning anymore. Everything I ever loved about this place has been eliminated. I hope others voice their feedback so that the owners can perhaps revisit the changes that have been made and revive this place before it's too late. We need cute little tea, rooms, and bistros unless mass scale commercial chains. This was one of the good ones but has since fallen into the wayside. read more

I just went here on a whim so I take the blame for going somewhere that was not what I expected. The place was crowded and we were seated at a tiny two-chair table in a line of tables side-by-side literally about 16 inches apart. It was very uncomfortable being that close to other diners since one of them was coughing. Yeah, I know it's a public place but I don't care to have everyone hear my conversation as if I am on an elevator. The menu is mostly brunch stuff with some sandwiches for lunch. I got a French Dip sandwich that looked like they took a chunk of cold cut roast beef directly out of a Sam's pack and plopped it onto some bread. Didn't even bother to spread it around. The food was overall something like I would pickup at 7-Eleven when I am running late to a meeting. I suppose it's not fair for me to judge this place based on expectations vs what it really intends to be. I now understand that this is a light brunch tea and muffin type of place with cute decor. Just keep that in mind if you find yourself on the Square and you are trying to decide where to eat lunch. read more

Just 15 minutes after opening, the dining room was half full of hungry brunchers. The Tree is clearly a local fave. The menu is inviting. Off-menu daily specials are offered by the servers. Though I'm open to another visit whenever I'm back in Denton, I'll stick to the more traditional menu items. Crêpes Parisienne (a regular brunch menu offering) sounded wonderful. It arrived not as a delicate thing, but more as a giant burrito overfilled with spinach & artichoke dip. The flavors were good for a bite, but not for breakfast. The portion was far too large and overpowering as too much of a good thing stuffed into a rubber pancake. It desperately needed a side of chips or baguette toasts for balance. Even so early in the shift, the breakfast potatoes were cold and dry. The daily special was a chicken and waffle poutine. It sounded wonderful. The special arrived with an oil-soaked, unbrowned, waffle-ironed heap of previously noted breakfast potatoes. The chicken was flavorful, crunchy, and good enough to be shared between us. By the time we were ready for our check, the dining room was full and the waitstaff were struggling to keep up. Our waitress never returned. I knew the square offered a good variety of eateries and I stumbled on this nice little bistro. The pictures are the place exactly --- very nicely laid out with a nostalgic flair. I was greeted and seated by Cody and ordered a soup and salad...the salad was great. One of the soups of the day was Asian Cabbage...not really to my liking, but the service and ambiance made up for it. Not too crowded, but definately all ages welcome. Cutest little rustic vibe with lovely plants and cool wall decor I'd love to copy at home. Service okay. I think she forgot my mimosa. I had to ask for it a second time. Do not like they do not serve sodas. I get it's a tea house but some people just don't want tea. I did like their mimosa bar. Generous amount of champagne given and then you can add your own juice and fresh fruit from the bar. Only $7 I think for me much of its allure stops with the decor. I'll admit I haven't tried anything but the quiche. I love quiche and jump at any chance to have some. Didn't care for their Quiche Lorraine. The consistency was weird and unappealing. Not enough cheese. Bland - most of the flavor came from the visible seasoning sprinkled on top. I think my quiche tastes better and I'm no fabulous cook by far. Breakfast potatoes a bit peppery for me. Could have used a little crunch on the outside but that's just a preference of mine. Tried my daughter's crepe. The Chestnut Tree uncorked Suzanne Schneider Johnson does it again. A new creative menu. We are remiss to have not made it to one of the Uncorked evenings offered several times a week. It is small bites, mezza, tapas that are excellent. To start with there is a good selection of wine and then the "uncorked" menu. We chose: - Beet carpaccio, which is a no brainer if you like beets. If you are a reluctant beet fan, try them, they are sliced paper thin and arranged on an arugula base with toasted and salted walnuts. - Our next choice that we had served with the beets is polenta fries. Absolutely delicious , properly small that allows them to be crispy on all sides. I am a polenta fan and serve it frequently at home. I now have a goal to match these. - We next opted for potato croquettes with a basil sauce. These were so delicious that I tasted one and looked up to see Emile had emptied the rest onto his plate. - Next choice was a pork with tomatoes served on top of mashed potatoes! The perfect ending to a small bite dinner. - However, there is dessert and the above and beyond coconut rum cake made by Suzanne was perfect. - I have to give a shout-out to our server Samantha who worked to serve our food in the order we like (picky patrons suck). - Did I mention the coconut rum cake?? read more

I know buildings are old in downtown Denton, but this place feels like it's falling apart. Some may think it's cute but it's not cute to have no AC in the restaurant where they have to leave the door open and all the flies come in. The floor is about ready to give out as well. We were just at The Chestnut Tree for their Bastille Day special dinner. From start to finish, it was a true delight! We started with an amazing house made salmon spread on very good baguettes, and then had an incredible garlic spread. The next course was a remarkable bouillabaisse with an onion tart and another tart topped with cherry tomatoes. The next course was a ratatouille with mashed potatoes. Usually I'm not fond of ratatouille, but this made a believer out of me. Rich, hearty and full of flavors that just exploded on my tongue. The dessert was a croquembouche - a sculpture made of profiteroles (or little cream puffs) held together with caramelized sugar. It is hard to say enough good things about this meal, or the Tree. This was the best meal I've had in a long time, and one of the best meals I've ever had. If you see they are having a special Sunday dinner, you should go. read more

Pros: the server was super nice (although inattentive) and there were complimentary muffins to start out our meal. Cons: the food was mediocre and not worth the price. I ordered the salmon eggs benedict, which came with a side of roasted potatoes. The smoked salmon was limp, and didn't have the strong, smokey flavor that I love. Additionally, the hollandaise sauce was a little too sour for my taste. What was really disappointing, though, were the breakfast potatoes. In my opinion, it's difficult to mess up breakfast potatoes, but mine were cooked to death, super dry, hard, and unseasoned. TLDR, go somewhere else on the Square for a better bang for your buck. read more

I had a meet-up with a friend to catch up. I haven't had a meal in Denton other than the random food truck near a brewery. You have the option of breakfast or brunch items. I decided on the PSL French toast. I love pumpkin items..and the cranberry syrup made it a win. I don't like really sweet breakfast bread so the whipped butter and powdered sugar were plenty for me. I did try the cranberry syrup. It didn't add or subtract to French toast and I didn't get a lot so I settled for the bit of regular syrup to finish it. The waitstaff was very helpful and continued to check on us. The place was busy until they closed. Nice enough as I was catching up with a friend they didn't kick us out either. We chatted and a couple of tables were still finishing their meals. It's on the square so hopefully you snag a parking spot to walk right up. I love this place. I've been here twice and it's just such a charming experience. It's beautiful and lovely on the inside, and out, has a delicious menu and everyone who works there is wonderful! It's made in house. Not cookie cutter. I ended up adding a little mayo because it's vegan and I wanted a tiny bit more umph. My friend got the club. She ordered the whole sandwich and it is actually two sandwiches. One would be enough. The kids ordered breakfast and ate it all. It is a teensy bit snobby but I cannot understand why.
