Have taken multiple vehicles there for several repairs over a several year period. Cheaper than the dealership, but a little expensive. Normally quality workmanship, but a couple of small problems with the last two visits. Rear wheel lug nuts were torqued to, probably, about 200 lbs. Almost unremovable - wouldn't have been able to remove roadside for a flat. And rear tire pressures were dropped below mfr's recommendation. read more

I had thought about bringing my first Benz to MBI a year ago and decided to go somewhere 'cheaper' thinking I could beat the system by paying less to get quality work at a shop that doesn't specialize in Mercedes. I will never make that mistake again now that I've experienced MBI. I recently bought a 2006 c230 Sport for a questionably good deal. In short I knew she'd need some love. I brought her into MBI two days before her scheduled appointment for an inspection and to address the whine under the hood. They took her in, provided me with a priority list of repairs, changed the alternator, tensioner and belt and replaced the coolant reservoir. Why I will 100% choose MBI moving forward: The check engine light came on an hour after I picked her up. Not their fault, a completely unrelated issue. I called Kevin and he told me to bring it back as soon as I could. They took it in, diagnosed the issue and installed a sensor in just under two hours. Because I had just driven my car off their property after paying for the alternator repair, Kevin charged me only for the price of the sensor and waived the labor. This is customer service, folks. Rarely have I been so impressed with a shop that I would be compelled to write a review but that is the case with MBI Motors. I'm a bona fide "car guy" and collector as well as a perfectionist. When I finally decided to have a few things repaired on my older SL, I turned it over to these folks. It DID take a few days before they were able to actually get to the car but it was worth the wait. I received a good assessment of needs and a run down of expected cost. I know a bit about older cars and when I questioned some of the recommendations, I was actually able to discuss the pros and cons with Brian the technician one on one. He spent more than 30 minutes explaining it all. Brandon and Kevin the service writers were excellent and kept me well informed. The car was well cared for the entire time it was there. When it was completed, Brian again took the time explaining things. I also noticed a myriad of little things that I never requested that they simply fixed at no charge. The car was returned to me "detailed" at no charge including the engine bay. I was impressed. The shop rate here is about 175/hour...probably comparable to other shops but the level of quality makes it worth it. MBI took care of this car when it belonged to the previous owner and I have been taking it to MBI since I purchased it 15 years ago. My first Yelp review. MBI saved my 02 ML320. The motor mounts were worn and affecting the engine (vibration), transmission (bad shifts) and the starter was giving me problems (bad starts). They did a honest and thorough inspection. Replacing the mounts and repairing the engine power and ground wiring. They could have done and charged me for the starter. How would I have known. But they did the wiring as a first step and they were right, it was the wiring. I had been going to 2 other shops (much dirtier shops) with slightly lower rates after going to MBI initially. During a long road trip, one of my brake lights stopped working. Since I thought it was due to a bad circuit rather than a bad bulb, I went looking for a shop to help me out. I called MBI Motors and although they couldn't do any larger work for me during my stop in Portland since they were booked two weeks out, they did invite me to drop in so they could look at the brake light and hopefully fix it quickly. Quick it was! They had it fixed 2 minutes after I had walked into the shop. It was just a bad bulb after all, and I appreciate they didn't make me feel stupid for not figuring it out myself. I wouldn't have blinked if they had charged me $5 for the bulb and $10 for labor, but instead they just did it absolutely free. They seem like absolutely stellar folks! As a side note, I was impressed by how absolutely pristine their shop floor was; it was like something out of a stock photo. I think that speaks to a impressive commitment to quality. read more

I always try to get a second opinion when dealing with mechanics, so I did just that and the other shop said it was only the left cylinder that was bad and it cost over $1500 cheaper. read more

Excellent shop for old mercedes. Ours happened to break down in Portland, 3 hours from home, and the first shop we pulled into recommended these folks. They let us leave the car there while it was being fixed, and kept it for several weeks while we scheduled a trip to come pick it up. I don't know much about cars, but I felt that they were fair, the prices seemed reasonable, and they were very matter of fact about what needed to be done. I took it to this shop Monday morning, and within an hour and a half they confirmed what I thought it was....3 hours later I had my car back. And he's running beautifully. (Yes. I said he. It's a bit cliche to call it a she...so I went against the grain. :D) Clean, fast, courteous and professional...this was the best experience I've had with my limited time with cars. And the prices are fair. When I got my bill, it worked out to in between 50-60$ an hour for labor. You cannot touch that in this town! I was referred to MBI by an old friend and owner of a local german based used car boutique many years ago. Since the referral there has been a change in ownership and with the change we lost the warm, accommodating, trustworthy and genuinely sincere mechanic. The old has been replaced with smug, not friendly whatsoever, higher priced and an almost make you feel bad vibe for being concerned or question about the cost. The first visit the new owner was nice and a little used car swarmy but I thought nothing of it. The second and third visit I was flat out ignored by the owner. I spent a little over 5k in 7 months and a simple smile and hello would suffice. In fact, they were able to keep me from buying a lemon E350 that had a used engine switched out from the East Coast, which had been in a major accident not listed on CARFAX! Yes, there is a new owner at MBI. Its always scary when things change. Particularly when something is as good as MBI. I have a 1980 diesel with well over 200000 miles on it. I drive the heck out of it for my business: all in town miles-up and down the west hills and short highway drives. I use biodiesel which means keeping track of rubber deterioration in the engine. When I take it in they note the miles, then help me keep it running and safe. I have my do it immediately list, my next time list and my wish list. The prices are not beyond the norm and I trust these people. I've been using them since I bought my car in 2004. They don't talk down to me and I appreciate that. My daughter also uses MBI for her 1984 diesel wagon. She calls Brandon and he makes sure to get her in when its an emergency (more than once!) and makes sure her car is fixed and safe. they have been very kind to her and I know they make sure her car is safe. I love my old car. Thank goodness for MBI. I wish I could find the same kind of trust for a mechanic for my 86 CJ7! read more

The service here is excellent in my experience. The prices are well below dealership cost (though some of their parts have high markup) and they seem quite honest and straight forward. I've only once had to return my Benz (a 2000 ML430) for an incorrect repair and they were quick to resolve it. They have crappy looking (but quite reliable and functional) old loaner cars, but hey, they're free and it's better than nothing. Their shop is *super* clean and tidy, filled with laser alignment beams and laptop computers and whatnot. When I recently got an oil change, they also checked all sorts of other stuff on the car, including the transmission fluid, and gave me a nice typed up (not hand written, thank god) summary of issues found, on my final invoice. Very thorough and professional. On a final note, they once refilled my AC compressor during the hottest week of the year, FOR FREE, just to be nice. They also gave me a free computer diagnostic check, free headlight installation and a discount on cleaning my sunroof gutters, since it didn't solve my water leak. They even cleaned my brakes to get rid of the squeak, without me even asking. Nice! This is the only shop my Mercedes will be going to from now on. Best in town, hands down. read more

Employees are mostly former Mercedes dealership repair peeps but I'm pretty sure they are treated better here because they stay here. I've been dealing with Sig and the crew at MBI for many years, so I was a little apprehensive about the changes that new owners might bring about. Pleased to say I have no concerns now. They are very, very thorough. While there was some initial sticker shock when they showed me the laundry list of repairs my older diesel needed, it quickly became clear that several of the items on that list were things that had been missed or ignored under the previous management and really should have been dealt with sooner. Some were even things that had been repaired by MBI 1.0 but were still clearly not right. If you're like most people, you might rather have several slightly larger repair bills over many years than one giant one, but the folks at MBI were very good about showing me the specifics of each item on the list on the car and helping to prioritize and break down that laundry list into manageable chunks. Those repairs that were completed were 100% in line with estimates, done quickly, and darned if she doesn't run better today than the day I bought her. I'll definitely be back. read more

Great job overall! I was in a pinch as over the past weekend I had discovered my alternator had given up it's ghost. So I called in early Monday morning in hopes of getting a spot for getting my repair done. Not only did they fit me in. But also as I asked for any rental car options they may suggest, they offered me a loaner! Service was completed at what I felt was a fair price. Also had my oil change and fuel filter replacement while I was there. I noticed the shop was very well manicured and staff was friendly. Service manager was helpful and understanding of fitting in what I could within my budget. Staff was very knowledgeable of common issues with my model 2002 Mercedes C320 wagon and helping me plan a roadmap to keep it running in great shape. I have a Mercedes and have used Rasmussen (Portland Downtown) Mercedes and Wilsonville Mercedes for years. I was told good things about MBI and thought I would try their services because the auto dealers seem to me to be higher priced and more aggressive in terms of pushing for other services which makes me uncomfortable using them. When I walked into MBI, Kevin from Portland Downtown Mercedes was at the counter and has moved to MBI. Since I always had great service from him, I felt instantly more comfortable. The work I had done was professional, well explained, and done at the quoted price although the actual work ran about $60 more for parts. I respected they abided by the original estimate. A good thing just got better at MBI. I've been going to them for a couple of years now, and the new ownership is outstanding! Quick example: I had an ongoing rough idle and check engine light issue. I took it to the dealer for a free recall repair. The dealer did $900 worth of work without my authorization and after some back and forth they ended up not charging me. Regardless, it did not fix the issue. Annoyed at the dealer for living up to their stereotype, I took it to MBI and they instantly diagnosed a common problem on this vehicle. I did my research online, and, sure enough, there is a design flaw with this particular engine. Sadly, the flaw meant I needed the cylinder head rebuilt (compression was 70 PSI on cylinder 3 vs around 180 for the others).. I like MBI, but I figured I'd shop prices: Dealer quoted $4,500 (after all sorts of concessions), MBI quoted $3,500. Given a) MBI knew the car well enough to know this was a common issue, b) they were $1k less AND c) they had the same service warranty as the dealer, I trusted them to fix it. Boy am I glad they did. When I came to pick up the car the bill was $840 LESS than their quote. They explained they didn't need to do as much work as they had feared. Now, I don't know about you, but I have never been undercharged by a dealer like that. If a dealer quotes $3,500, they take it ALL and often ask for more. MBI continues to win my business again and again. This is just one example -- I've had many other great experiences and can't recommend them enough. I hope this helps someone! read more

I made an account on yelp just to post this!!! I am so upset Its going to be hard for me not to use any four letter words to describe MBI. My car finally had a problem I wasn't sure how to fix so for the first time in the twenty years I decided to take it to a mechanic to diagnose the problem. From what it seemed like MBI was the best place to take your Mercedes Benz here in Portland. To make a long story short they charged me $85 to "diagnose" my car although they claimed they checked the injection pump and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I don't have any proof but when I got the car home I realized my rear taillight was cracked! I guess that would explain why they were acting weird when I went to go pick up my car. I ended up talking with some people on Benzworld.org and diagnosed the problem myself. A piece on the injection pump was in fact faulty which I ended up replacing myself. In summation not only did MBI waste my time, take my money and not fix my car, there is a good chance they cracked my rear taillight. MBI I hope you die a slow horrible death. read more

When I first took the family '81 300SD to MBI the first time years ago, I had my doubts, they were soon all squashed into myths. From their immaculately clean shop, to their well stock parts department, knowledgeable people working everywhere, to thier beyond welcoming customer service desk, to their more than understanding management team, probably my idea of a well functioning business. I had an issue with the 300SD it was kicking Hard on the down shift into 1st and 2nd. Child in arms took it in super late no appointment on a Friday (not recommended) as I entered their front desk busy. a passing by mechanic, asked if I had the black one or the cream colored benz, I told the cream one, he immediately said "it's down shifting hard, feels like a mule kicking you in the back?" With out a doubt nailed it. Told me to bring it in to the bay and he'll take a look, 15min later came back tossed me the keys and said you owe us a review. Turns out it was a psi problem in the softener for the transmission. Just the fact that happened was a miracle, little did they know I had no money at the time to even pay for a quick fix, I had my child asleep in my hands and I was beyond stressed out. What they did for me that day was give me a little hope. And that's worth way more than any kind of wealth. I've been taking my car there for years now, my brother paid for a lot of work on the the car through MBI, truly a great place to have work done on your car. O MBI. I'm so sad. I have been a loyal customer for many years. Most of the employees know me AND my dog by name. I have always felt so well taken care of each and every time I bought I my tired old and much loved Mercedes into the shop. They have fixed things for me for free when they probably should have charged me, walked me through the process of how to fix certain things myself and always treated me with respect. All of that changed this month when I bought my car in. I noticed when I called that there were some small differences, but I chalked it up to a new employee or something minor. When I got a call back from that new voice telling me the repairs would be almost what I paid for the car, I began to panic. I did some research and found out that MBI was recently sold. I went to pick up my car to think about my next move and immediately saw that things were different. There were fancy new computers and charges for things I never would have been charged for before. The warmth and family style experience were all gone. I left dejected. Where would my beloved car get repairs? What if I never saw Brandon or Sig again? I called Omega Motors which I had heard some wonderful things about and not only did I get the family feeling back, my car was repaired for a third of the price MBI quoted me. I have a stately mid-1980's 4 door Mercedes. These nice people have put the old dear in tip top shape for a very fair price. They have kept me informed during the process. No surprises. I bought a 1980 300SD diesel about 8 months ago. The car was serviced at MBI by the previous owner. When I bought the car the previous owner told me that water was still leaking into the trunk after MBI had resealed one of the taillights as well as the trunk seal for $300. It had been over a year since the work had been done but I called MBI to see if they would stand behind their work. If it lasted 30 years the first time it seems it should last longer than a year the second time. I realize I didn't bring the car in originally but they weren't interested in doing any follow up work under warranty. They would "take a look but no work will be done for free". Fair enough. I decided to take it elsewhere. Months later I brought the car in for them to inspect the throttle linkage because it had fallen loose while driving (fun). I wanted to make sure I put it back together properly and that it wouldn't happen again. The front desk guy was very nice and courteous. They adjusted the linkage and transmission modulator and the car ran much better. They charged me for an hour of labor which seems totally fair. But while they closed the hood my right latch was bent and broken. They didn't offer to replace it but just suggested I order another one. It was backordered to Germany and they said they'd call when it arrived. I never received a call. The next work I had done was to replace the ignition tumbler. They had suggested at my last visit to have it replaced for a little over $100 before the key gets stuck and the job becomes a $700 one. No problems. Turned it around very quickly. Later that night I started it up and my dash lights weren't working. I checked and the fuse had blown. Not blaming them at all it's just always annoying when something like that happens. The most recent work was to have my brakes bled and the fluid replaced, replace a fuel hose, and replace the glow plugs. During this visit is when I asked if my hood latch had come in. "Uh, yeah it did, sorry about that". Again, no real BIG deal, just annoying. So I asked them to install it along with the other work. I got a call later that them throwing it on for me has turned into them have to bend the frame of the body next to the radiator where the latch catches. That cost $76 plus the $26 latch means I spent $101 because of their initial mistake. When I picked the car up I was pleased to see they had washed it, including the tires, and it looked great. But I got pretty bummed when they pulled it out for me and it wouldn't shut off. I just kept saying, "I've never had this problem". The tech started checking my door locks, heater, etc for vacuum leaks. Then he popped the hood and looked around. Then he went back inside to get somebody else. When he walked away I leaned over and noticed a vacuum hose was disconnected. I plugged it back in and the engine stopped. He came back and asked what happened. When I told him he said he didn't see that. No, really? So if they pulled the car into their lot after the work was done and it shut off fine, what happened from then until they started it to pull it out of their lot? The fuel hose and brake work was fine but they installed the glow plugs improperly. Two times after I got it back the car started VERY rough with knocking for about 20 seconds. Then my glow plug light started flashing for 30 seconds. I called them immediately after the second time and made an appointment to have it checked out. In the meantime I checked the resistance at the glow plug relay and noticed that the #5 plug measured incorrectly. I then looked at the glow plug and noticed the nut the holds the wire (the electricity that makes it work!) was not tightened! I could spin it several times by hand. I then tightened it with a wrench and presto, problem solved. When I received a call from them to confirm my appointment to have the glow plugs checked out I told them that I found their mechanic's mistake and fixed it myself. So, yes, the place is spotless, they have state-of-the-art technology, a nice waiting room, loaner cars, close to plenty of food and shops on Hawthorne, etc, but for $95/hour, I don't want any fishy business or inept work. I shouldn't have to finish their job, pay for their mistakes, or be the one to diagnose the problem correctly before them. Sorry to babble... hope this review helps. read more

Since Sig left MBI has received a face lift and an attitude change. I have been pulling wrenches on MBs and other cars for over 50 years but at 70 I am not in the mood for crawling under the car any more. The last time I took my MB diesel in because of a noise in the front end and an electrical fault the service manager made it clear by his ignoring me that he did not value a thing I was saying. I used MBI for many years because of their proximity to where I live and then Hartmann Motors because of their proximity to my past job. I am beginning to think the extra drive to Hartmann is not so bad to be treated like a thinking human being who might know a thing or two about cars. Three stars becauseI have no complaints about MBIs work (that is five star) just their new attitude (that is about one star). read more
