Hideous service. Ordered online for pickup. They called and were out of 50% of the items I ordered. I asked them to cancel the order. Their response? "We can't cancel the order and refund your credit card without getting your credit card number again." When I protested, they hung up on me. I called back and spoke with the manager who was dismissive and condescending- and not at all professional. This restaurant is very poorly run. We just stumbled upon this place while checking out the shopping mall. The best decision ever! We are vegetarian (my wife+I) and we ordered pretty much all the veggie options and the total was aroun $30. The food was delicious and the service ever faster! Although the seating was a bit tight making it not ideal for big groups. Would definitely be coming back whenever I'm in town! read more

What an awful customer service experience. I walked in and 3 girls were behind the counter. They weren't busy: one table of customers. I stood there for 5 minutes before one acknowledged me and said "are you ready to order?" I asked for a taste of soup. She got soup in a little cup and handed it to me and walked away. No spoon. I asked for a spoon to taste the bowl. I looked at the people waiting behind me and we shook our head. Then young worker says "is something wrong?" I said "yes, I've been waiting here for 5 minutes with no acknowledgement. She said "there were 2 other people you could have asked for help" I said " I'm the customer-why are you not asking me how to serve?" Obviously she could have cared less about the customer. I left without ordering a thing. The taste of soup was also cold. She was so rude and shouldn't be in a customer facing position. read more

I usually don't write restaurant reviews online, but I have to do it today! I don't mind McAlister's Deli at all, in fact, I enjoy going there and grabbing a sandwich and tea for a quick meal. It's not the best in town, but it works for me. However, today my mom and I wanted to get a quick meal to go so we could have dinner together and she wouldn't have to cook in this hot heat. I called to order our food and it rang, and rang, and rang. I waited 5 min! I even called back and let it ring another 3 min. or so, and got NO ANSWER! I will not be back there again. I hope mgmt. reads these reviews, but from the looks of things they don't! Soon to be an out of business store in less than a year! I bet ya!! read more

I would like to give 0 stars but Yelp wont let me. Today was my first and last time eating here. A previous customer did not like the New Yorker and I see why. I blame Chef Mike (microwave). Microwaved corned beef and pastrami! What a terrible idea. The pastrami was chewy and tough. The corned beef was hard on the edges due to being microwaved. Ordered sandwhich with no mustard but apparantly Chef Mike doesnt know what that mean. The mustard along with the juice from being microwaved made the bread nice and soggy. $10 for a sandwhich I cant eat. How is this place still open? read more

The food at the Okemos version of this place was barely passable, and it is not really a deli in the traditional sense of the word. This is just a chain soup and salad and sandwich shop. I can't begin to express the frustration we felt here. We sent only one dish back, but decided that we would not likely ever return. The only true deli I know in this region - and one that rates very highly in my experience there and elsewhere - is Roma of Cedar Street, Lansing. read more

tried yet again to order a spud was charged for xtra sour cream. had the girl check my bag and i asked if there was extra sour cream and she said"no let me grab you an extra one" what she didnt do or tell me was there was never any sour cream OR butter to begin with so her "extra" one she gave me and i got charged for was what should have actually came with my spud.they honestly have the HARDEST time getting such simple things right! i all but lost faith and gave it one more shot but im done with this place. terrible. read more

My first visit here. They were so busy I thought it would be a good choice. My order got lost in the shuffle resulting in a 35 minute wait for my food. I order the horseradish roast beef and cheddar with a cup of soup. The sandwich was soggy and seemed thrown together, probably in the rush to deliver and I've had better soup from a can. Save your money or go somewhere different. Not a great first impression and I will not return. read more

They were out of 3 things that we ordered but didn't tell us about 2 of them until they brought out the order for the whole table. We asked very politely for a substitute or compensation and were treated rudely. The staff didn't think it was out of the ordinary to be out of several things on the menu. I had visited the Eastwood Town Center once years ago and remember not being impressed with it (the cashier told me the sandwich I ordered wasn't very good, and she turned out to be right), and I had pretty much forgotten about this place. But after seeing another one pop up in Okemos, and they appeared to be popular, so I decided to give this one a go. well, let's just say, I should have trusted my first instinct. the cashier was not very friendly. asking for my order as I was still obviously looking at the menu, and appearing to want to be anyplace but where she was at.. I doubt the reason for her rudeness could have been from being overworked as there was only one other party in the restaurant at the time. I settled on a turkey sandwich, and sat down at a table to wait for it. The chair I sat it was easily the most uncomfortable I have ever sat in, it was very hard and not helpful to my back, as I have occasional back pain. My turkey sandwich came and it was 2 of the thinnest sliced pieces of turkey you can imagine. I knew that, and the dinky little cup of coleslaw I got as my side was not going to fill me up, so I ate about half of it and threw the rest in the trash, and headed over to Wendy's for a chicken sandwich and a frosty. The cost for the puny, paltrid turkey sandwich, dinky cup of coleslaw and a regular drink was more thant $8 if memory serves. it's a pretty rare event that I'm dissatisfied with a restaurant, be it fast food or a nice, sit-down restaurant, but McAlister's managed to be one of the few in the category. avoid this place. read more

It was a dark and stormy night, and I was trying to figure out a restaurant that was a suitable place for my family, my nephews, and my parents to eat dinner. It was a school night, so reasonable quickness was an issue. My parents do not at anything that may possibly have been stored in the same cabinet as a grain of pepper in 1999, so no Chinese, Indian, Thai or Mexican. Rob and I are carbophobic, which makes it hard for us to make good choices at places like "Oodles of Noodles." The kids needed something fairly simple, which made it unwise to eat anywhere with "creative" soups or plating involving a swirl of cardamom oil. I refuse to eat at The Olive Garden, just because. As if in a vision, the idea of a quick soup-and-sandwich kind of place came to mind. My friend Ted recently conducted an informal poll on Facebook concerning whether Panera was "fast foood," and the consensus with which I agree, is that it is "fast" but also ell prepared, and very healthy if one makes wise choices. Panera was a viable option, as was The Grand Traverse Pie Company, a more regional restaurant offering counter service and a wide assortment of freshly made soups, salads and sandwiches (with pie for dessert if you aren't me. I remember it fondly). I like both of these places a great deal, but since I had never tried the third option, McAlister's Deli, I asked my mother if we could eat there. New horizons and all that. The take-home message here, is that new horizons are to be avoided at all costs. Oh, the humanity! The place was unprepossessing as restaurants go, resembling most closely a sports bar with the "bar" and "sports" removed. This was not a big deal when dining out with assorted children; we had not been expecting Philipe Stark furniture and a chandelier. We were greeted at the counter by one of the two high-school aged women who were the only visible employees, both of whom elevated sullenness to an art form. We gave our orders to the blonde (hereinafter "the blonde") who was clearly not happy to see a party of 7 that included children, drummed her fingers on the counter when orders were not forthcoming quickly enough, and asked questions in a way that indicated that, if you had not memorized the intimate details of their menu, you should probably go home and study. To whit: I requested a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with a slice of Havarti, dry. "You mean you want the 'Be Choosey?!'" she asked in a tone that was the equivalent of "Duh." Apparently I did, but I had tragically failed to distinguish between the "Be Choosey" and the flashier options, say, the "Smoked Turkey." The side choices were kind of a problem for the carb-challenged; I could choose from chips, potato salad, mashed potatoes, "seasonal fruit," or cole slaw. The menu on the internet includes steamed vegetables, which I did not see at the restaurant (possible my bad, maybe because I felt compelled to order as if giving a recitation at the closing ceremonies of the Evelyn Woodhead Speed Reading Course) and a side salad could be had for an additional $2.50. I ordered the fruit, figuring that I would give it to the kids. After all, I reasoned, I'd get a big sandwich and it would be a light, filling dinner. I even considered the fact that if, like Panera, the bread was too thick for my carb intake, I'd have to open the sandwich and pull out some of its insides. I needn't have worried. As the food was brought to the table, it became apparent that no human was actually cooking anything. My son and nephew received bread bowls, one filled with soup, and one with chili. When Sam, who really isn't a complainer, told us that the bread was stale, we all took a taste and agreed that it probably was not actually "stale," but "bad bread;" it was the kind of airy, flavorless bread that is often euphemistically labeled "Italian" at grocery stores. It did not have, if you'll forgive me, the cojones to stand up to a ladle of hot liquid, and our kids, who have had terrific bread bowls elsewhere (again, Panera comes to mind) were bitterly disappointed that they could not, or rather would not enjoy the ritual eating of chunks of soup-soaked bread as part of their meal. When my mother called one of the employees to the table to let her know that Sam was unhappy with his bread bowl, (we'll call this one "the brunette"), she looked skeptical, said she was "really sorry," and walked away. It later occurred to me that she was presented with a customer service conundrum that perhaps exceeded her experience or interest level: when you have made an error in the kitchen, you can offer to replace the food with an improved version. When your food is just not good, there isn't a lot you can do by way of an upgrade. (Gift card to Panera, perhaps?) My sandwich was a small portion of turkey and a slice of Havarti on store-bought whole wheat bread. I tried to make it last, but there really just wasn't much to work with.
