We did have a bit of a wait for food but we were told this prior to being seated so we just had coffee and muffins while we waited. This is the first restaurant review I have ever done. I have thought about this for about a week. The service was slow - OK it was noon. The meal was slow - OK it was noon. The meal was pricey - but decent. I paid about $12.xx for a sandwich, and my wife had a similar order. THEN I noticed on the ticket, the price for a glass of Ice Tea - $5.95 per glass. PUH-LEEEEZE !!!. By the time we paid taxes and a modest tip, it was more than $40.00. I can go to a nice restaurant where I live (Major City in Texas) and get a nice dinner (not lunch) for less than that. Next time I want lunch in Salado, I will go to Sonic or a convenience store, or maybe the next town. read more

I took a little weekend trip to Salado to enjoy some gorgeous countryside scenery and get away from Austin. The AirBNB recommended McCain's as one of the only places open on Sunday with great food. I went for breakfast and was excited to see just as many sweet options as savory. The chocolate chip pancake was AMAZING. So many chocolate chips and morsels of deliciousness. The sausage and eggs I got as a side were just ok - kind of bland, with the sausage being ok and the eggs being really plain. Added a bunch of salt, pepper and hot sauce and still not the greatest.  But the service was friendly, there wasn't a long line, and there was plenty of parking. Coffee refills abounded and they even offered fresh, full drinks to go. Lots of desserts and pastries in the case. Tempted me, but I didn't try them. read more

Had breakfast here on Sunday. Place was busy and they were a little short staffed but it was definitely worth the wait. Staff was super friendly. The food was so good. The pancakes were huge and so delicious!! They have a case up front with homemade bake goods you can take to go as well. Love this little gem. We stopped in this quaint little spot for a later lunch. I had the gourmet grilled cheese which was done on a sourdough bread and the potato salad as a side. It had a cheesy flavor but had been grilled to a light tan color which was not appealing to me and the potato salad was on the dry side. My wife got the chicken salad sandwich sans bread with a side of chips. It was served on a bed of lettuce and tomatoes was a curry color and it also was on the dry side. Her chips did not come, instead a potato salad side was on her plate. The service was so so, we were not approached after our meals were delivered to ask if we needed anything else or to freshen drinks. I'm sure they have some tasty dishes but I would not reorder either of ours. read more

This little gem is a MUST if you find yourself in Salado, Texas. So, so very good. Started with a fully loaded vanilla latte which is probably one of the best I've had. I enjoyed their quiche and a biscuit for my meal. That quiche was utter perfection. I'm a big crust girl - it can make or break a quiche and this one was flavorful and flaky. Place was very small! Walked in and just stood there for several minutes before anyone even spoke to us, just to come find out we could've just sat ourselves like 5 minutes ago... I order a cheeseburger with extra mustard, I get a burger with absolutely NO mustard... my gf ordered a BLT and got a Bacon sandwich with no Lettuce or Tomato! ‍ they only bring u ONE napkin to use, so I hope u make do with that one! They were also mixing up orders from the other tables around us, bringing them the wrong food, and they also needed napkins ! Seems like they need to tighten up in there! Not really an excuse for forgetting lettuce and tomatoes when the ingredients are IN THE NAME BLT tried to order fried w my burger and they don't even have fries... order chips and they apparently only have ONE kind! Lays original! No options ! No sour cream and onion, no Jaleno, no bbq etc. The waitress asks us what sides we want and we're scouring the menu for sides just to come find out THERE ISN'T A SIDES SECTION on the menu! There's a very tiny sentence in the middle of the menu that says "chips, baked potato or coke slaw" ... that's it... those are your options.. take it or leave it ‍I think another page added on to the menu would serve them well. Sunday Morning Coffee! This little town shuts down on Sunday morning, probably because everyone is at church, which is good, but the McCain's Bakery is open and ready to serve you. We grabbed some yummy coffee to go and a blueberry muffin that was Devine! We didn't have any grub, but it did smell delicious and the patrons looked happy. Stopped into the place the past weekend on the way back home from Austin at the recommendation of my wife. Having never been to Salado I didn't know what to expect. The town overall is small, quaint and full of charm from the few streets that I saw. Would love to make a weekend out of it. McCain's is tucked away off the main street and easy to get to. Easy parking as well. Once inside we didn't have a wait at all. The thing I remember the most is the service. Everyone was so nice and friendly. The coffee was hot and delicious(and that is from someone who doesn't really drink coffee). The food had no issues and came out right. The only thing I wish they had is like chicken fried chicken but then wait times would increase I would assume. Overall the place, food, atmosphere were all positive and family friendly in my opinion. I was not disappointed in any way. We'll be back next time we are passing through. Charming little bakery cafe. Staff were nice and friendly. They do breakfast and lunch. They have a typical small town cafe menu. Featuring items like benedict, migas, quiche, biscuits and gravy, sandwiches, soups, chicken fried steak (skillet fried), salads, pastries, coffees, pies, cakes, and, cookies. Man, that's a lot of variety. We were in Salado, and, first wanted to try the Stage Coach Inn. It wasn't open. So, we drove on and played our little game of "see it shout". Which is when we are forced to revert to plan B, the first person to see a place and shout wins. I won! Went in and were seated immediately. The chairs were quite uncomfortable, but, tolerable. We ordered the chicken fried steak (CFS) and the reuben with potato chips. The mashed potatoes that came with the CFS were real potatoes. They were good (fresh is best, right?), but were cold. Pointed this out to the waitress and she was a bit dumbfounded as how to handle it. Umm, how about just bringing out another side that is warm? The CFS was skillet fried which is a nice alternative to deep fried. The Reuben was interesting. Very poorly executed. The Thousand Island dressing was the dominating factor on the sandwich. It was a bit overwhelming. I ate it, but, would never order it again. They use boars head meat (awesome), but, the corned beef flavor wasn't in that sandwich today. The potato chips were just that. Simple and boring. I would have enjoyed kettle cooked much better. Overall just an ok kinda place. If I'm ever in Salado again, I wouldn't turn them down. read more

We came in on a cold winter day and had to keep our jackets on because it was so cold inside the cafe. The chairs were uncomfortable. I ordered a cappuccino, but what they gave me was a latte. There was hardly any foam. It was still good, but it was not what I wanted. Only a couple of their sandwiches are available for the half sandwich, half soup deal. I ended up trying the chicken fried steak sandwich. The sourdough bread was good but tasted more like plain white bread. The sandwich was interesting, but I don't think I would order it again. The sandwiches themselves were good. We also shared the potato-cheese soup which I recommend. Overall, the sandwiches were good, but I don't see myself returning based on the other issues. read more

Everyone looks lost in this place! The lady at the front cash register was unhelpful at best. We had to seat ourself and she brought us one menu. You would be putting her out to come in eat some lunch. Still waiting on my tea. O just got it. Only 15 to 20 min wait for some tea. I guess McCain has lost there central Texas hospitality. Good, but not great. Portions are humongous. Salado scramble was quite good, but it had a few cool spots throughout the mound. The eggs benedict was fine and very generous with the hollandaise sauce. The biggest blip on the radar was a coffee that was ordered but not served in a timely manner. I mean we were halfway through eating and still no coffee. We reminded our server that we hadn't gotten our coffee, but instead of something like "I'm so sorry, it's coming right up", we got "Sorry, I'm kind of busy right now." Seriously?? That really was not cool! Finally, soft drink was refilled just as we were ready to pay the bill. We'll be back and hope for better service, but the food was quite good. read more

Piss poor service. Tall slender guy with beard forgets we are there 2 or 3 times visiting. Doesn't check on you, forgets details of what you have ordered, and this last time brings the check to pay when we hadn't even been served food. We were served one cup of coffee in about 30min, then to be given our bill, and commenting "no rush". No food, no coffee refills, just the check. Mind you we have a 2 year old at the table. read more
