If you read my two previous reviews, you note that I stopped in to try, arguably, the best burger in the area, but ended up getting other things. Yesterday, with blinders on, I would not be sidetracked. The CB was excellent. Perfectly cooked w a nice charbroiled taste. The bun held up it's part of the bargain. It was lightly grilled and didn't fall apart (this is very important). Sauteed onions rounded out the experience. The burger was in my top 12 all time, and I've tried them in hundreds of places around the country. Fries ok, nothing special, but at least hot. Prices very reasonable, barmaid Cathy a fixture (and personable and efficient). Lots of friendly locals. Anyway, so many great choices on the menu, and daily specials. Don't you just love a good Irish bar/restaurant!! The atmosphere, the Irish decor, the noise and laughter. Ireland would be proud of this gem! The apple sangria was tangy, sweet and well balanced. Really went down well. So well I had a second one-to ensure it was as good as I thought. It was! They ran out of the prime rib special (it looked amazing so I'm not surprised). I got a French dip sandwich which was tender and well seasoned. Loved that the roll and the au jus were still hot when it arrived. The garden salad had fresh crisp lettuce and lots of veggies. so we tried this place for lunch recently, and i think everyone else did too as it was very busy and a waiting line just to get in on a weekday, but we waited and were glad we did, service was pleasant, a little slow perhaps as the waitresses were pretty much running around, food was very good, clam dinner and a tuna melt, drinks were good and a nice pour, service though really busy, very pleasant, great busy place!!!! read more

This is a popular spot for locals, so be ready to spend some time finding parking in their tiny lot. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Their burger is sourced from a local farm and from what I was told, it was delicious. As for me, I got the prime rib. There was a decent amount of fat, but still lots of meat. This is not on the daily menu, I ordered off the Saturday specials menu. The roasted butternut squash was okay, some pieces felt undercooked. I stop at McCarthy's Pub once or twice a year on the way home from my vacation house. I am always satisfied. Tonight I had bbq chicken wings for an app. Well sauced, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Nicely done. I had the fish and chips for an entree. The fish was crispy and fresh! The shoestring fries could have been a little more crispy, but they were house made. I liked the cole slaw because it included a hint of horseradish. I had never had that in cole slaw before, but it totally enhanced it. Service was great and it was a busy, hometown, local pub atmosphere. It was also nice to watch football on the various tv's. My wife wanted to take me out for prime rib for my birthday. We opted to go to McCarthy's Pub since they were close and had prime rib at a fair price $21.99. The reviews on the internet were average so we opted to give them a try. The place was quite busy. They do not take reservations so we were optimistic that if there was wait it wouldn't be long. Now it is a pub so set your expectations lower than a steakhouse or fine dining establishment. It is stereotypical Irish pub with all sorts of Irish themed signs and other knick knacks. We were told to seat ourselves and picked the cleanest table we could find. I give them low marks on cleanliness- the table was sticky and the chairs dirty. They serve free popcorn as a means to encourage drinking. The floor was filthy and strewn with popcorn. The young waitress took our drink order and disappeared. Never came back. An older waitress who seemed to be more in charge came by an checked with us. Retook our order, a Guinness stout and an iced tea. She also took our order. Two prime ribs (medium rare), one with baked potato, one with corn chowder. I also ordered a side salad. The salad was average, my wife's corn chowder tasted like clam chowder and had a thick almost dried consistency. Eventually she said she could taste corn, it was like the two chowders got mixed. Our dinners were served with a side of au jus and horseradish mayo. The meat was the proper doneness. About 25% of my prime rib was a glob of pure fat. Very unappealing. The au jus was very strongly flavored, not sure with what. My wife's rib was good. We skipped dessert. Overall the meal was just okay and for $75 was an appropriate value. Will we eat there again, probably not. Would we recommend for dinner, probably not. If you are in the mood for local pub fare, this place is okay. read more

Stopped in for the first time the other day for lunch. Service was friendly and fast. We really enjoyed our meal. We shared the mushrooms app, I got a burger and fries, and my wife got the reuben. We also had some chili. Safe to say we had plenty of leftovers to take home. Looking forward to this being a regular destination for us as we are new to town. read more

Honesty first! we relaxed and settled in. our drinks were refilled and lunch arrived! Come here quite often as it's a five minute drive from me. I honestly love it here. Whether you come for drinks with friends, date night, or dinner with family you can't go wrong. My favorite meal is the leprechaun burger with a side of sweet potato fries! Sooo good! They have free popcorn and peanuts you can go grab if you want to. TVs everywhere and at the tables so you can always count on catching the game if you're looking for one! Good beer selection. Honestly the only reason it's not five stars is that sometimes you can wait a while (which isn't always bad, unless you're in a rush) if only one server is on. That and the bathrooms are suuuuper tiny. Not trying to seem rude but I feel like some people wouldn't fit into them so that's kind of a bust. Great atmosphere and fantastic food and drinks! We stopped in for a late lunch on NYE and were not disappointed. I had one of their martini's, a hot toddy and the turkey dinner and all came out wonderfully. The turkey was moist, veggies were fresh and the mashed potatoes were delicious. The hot toddy was made extra strong, which was appreciated. My husband had the drunken pastrami sandwich and enjoyed that too. Just tried this spot out for the first time, as my accomplice's business brought us to B'town. It was fine! The beer is cold. Plenty of shamrocks and Irish accoutrements to look at. Was really hoping for a good experience, since this is the closest bar to our new place. Unfortunately, service was slow (20 mins to get a round of beers), nearly an hour for food to come out. I went here with a good friend, right around dinner time. The place was packed to the gills. The parking lot is almost painfully tight, especially since we were in a pickup with the plow on. Inside, the place is a little tight as well, but feels comfy and homely. The food was pretty good, but a little under seasoned. Shepard's pie was good, but needed salt, and had a lot of oil on the bottom. I think maybe 85% or 88% lean ground beef would have improved the dish. My friend got an appetizer as his meal, and he seemed kind of unimpressed. It was all freezer/fried food. French fries, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, etc. But in fairness he knew what he was ordering so that's his own fault. I think it would be fun to come with more people and get a couple drinks. read more

McCarthy's is a pleasant bar for the most part. The servers and bartenders take the time to get to know you. Food is surprisingly good, especially the seafood. Beer is cheap, cocktails on the pricey side. A double vodka drink costs at least 10 bucks, which is kind of a shock in Belchertown. Similar drinks in Amherst or Northampton are generally $6-8. Sometimes the crowd gets a little strange when you have families with small children mingling with the rowdy drunks. This is simply a local pub in a small town that is a comfortable place to go in, watch some sports on the big screen, grab a bite of pub food or irish fare, and and a decent selection of beer. I have eaten here a few times, mainly burgers, and wraps, and had the Guinness Brats yesterday, which were excellent. Disappointed in being served cold garlic mashed, though.. It wasn't enough to bring me down. They used fresh green beans, which is good in a pub (usually you get canned garbage in most places!). A friend ordered the prime rib special, which he was more than happy with. During the summer a lot of bikes stop here as it is right on 202 which is a popular route for motorcycles (which is the reason I stop here as well). Waitstaff are always friendly with a smile. This is a local hot spot for my main-squeeze in his hometown of Belchertown, Mass., and I've been here a couple of times now on trips to see the family. It is a very standard Irish Pub that serves standard pub fare... but I must give major props to their wings. Seriously, those wings are a knockout.
