Also lots of cute toys (fisher price, baby Einstein, stuffed animals, TY, etc) and not to mention clothes, sizes from newborn to about kids 9. The bigger department store is also a nice stop for gifts, has a well sized men's section and ample selection for women-- not just clothing but also some thoughtful small gifts. I needed a swim shorts for summer and rather than order some online and wait for delivery, I thought "why not buy local!" Excellent choice! I say this because, as soon as I walked in the door, it was like the way department stores used to be. McCaulou's reminds me a lot of Mervyn's. Oh how I miss that store! Well, actually I should say how much I miss what retail used to be like. Even though McCaulou's is much smaller and very local compared with what Mervyn's was, it's good to have the opportunity to shop in person at a retail department store. For a small store McCaulou's has a pretty good selection. It's mostly casual and leisure attire. Yet for summertime, the store carries brands like Champion, Columbia, Still Water and Tommy Bahama. To me most of the styles are plain, yet one can do lots of mix and match for an outfit. Perhaps, because my thoughts lately have been wandering off and imagining what it would be like to vacation at an exciting getaway place like the French Rivera, I looked for a complete matching outfit. And I found one by Salty Crew. Cool, a bit contemporary but classy. I was thinking...Something to wear not only poolside but also befitting at a nice hotel's lounge and cocktail bar. Will I be able to get away to Europe this year and bask in the sun at St. Tropez? Probably not! But it's nice to be able to dress like I'm ready to go there. Did a little local Christmas shopping this year and was able to score some absolutely gorgeous Tommy Bahama sweaters for my husband and awesome skater hoodies for our boys! Also grab some gorgeous Pashmina's for the ladies in our family. The store is always clean and the staff is always helpful. Cannot get over how nice it is to have a gift wrap shop with free gift wrapping included with every purchase. Okay male compatriots this review is for you.... Like most clothing department stores this one uses 90% of the floor space for women's merchandise. And this store is jammed packed with merchandise. Go over to the men's section on the right side of this small town, small footprint store. You'll find NO hot fashion, no urban wear, no hot designer labels. What you will find are old reliable American brands like Dockers, Woolrich, Levi, Wangler... Lots of outdoor wear for hikers, campers, sailors, golfers - You know, casual clothes for sporty activities. Here's the best part, check out the carousels with the 75% off signs. There's plenty of them. You find something you like and pay practically nothing. I get my golf shirts here. Better brands, better quality than the crap I used to buy at Marshalls and Ross. Despite the dowdy appearance and small town conservative fashion selection here I enjoy the peace and quiet of this store. I've sworn off the crowds, noise, dirt and mostly bad crap sold at Marshall's / Ross Santa Rosa outlets. read more

I used to love this store. I usually shopped for Christmas presents and birthday presents here, w occasionally forays into stuff for me. Today, for the first time after using credit cards for over 45 years, I was asked to provide a driver's license to prove my identification. In my observation of three other transactions this afternoon, no one else was asked, including my sister with another sales clerk at another register for $30 more than my $72. I believe I was racially profiled by the clerk. Her explanation of "protecting me" falls flat when I'm the only person I saw being "protected". read more

I have shopped here many times and always find something I like. They have a great variety of clothing and merchandise brands and sizes. They even have a children store nearby within the same plaza! Both stores are conveniently located which makes shopping a lot easier. I don't need to go out of town to shop for clothing or gifts which is great. I used to shop here as little girl and I have a two year old who I would shop for after today there is no way! I bought some shoes on Saturday from there size 8.5 I tried them on at the store they felt fine. I came home put them on that same day walked like 4 steps in them and they felt so uncomfortable so I decided to return them today. I could not find the receipt so I was like maybe store credit ? I walk in ask if I could return them the young lady said no they were dirty and scratched from the bottom! I was in shock ok I walk out infuriated so I calm down and call the manager snd tell her what happened Nancy is her name and she said to hold she would talk to Ashley the one who turned me down. She comes back and says the young lady Ashley said she couldn't receive them because they were really scratched Nancy the manager didn't say come in so I can see for myself she turned me down as well I'm so disappointed never again will I shop here. read more

This shop is great when you need basics .Actually it is quite nice for the community of Sonoma. They have a niche for medium size markets. This type of shop is rather old school. Supposedly we won't be seeing this in the future . They have a very good selection for everyday wear . Some of the clothes are stylish too. The price range is moderate . They are located in a convenient attractive shopping center. I am sure many residents shop here. In the town of Sonoma this store fills a need. The sales people have always been helpful and considerate to me. You can get things that you really need here. They carry plenty of known brands for men and women and kids. It's not a Macy's or a Target type store, but more has its own identity. read more

I like McCaulou's and its nice to have a department store in town. I usually shop here when I'm in a pinch, and it gets the job done. I have found a a few great pieces here that I get complimented on whenever I wear it. The trouble is if you are like 25 to 40 the selection for you is kinda rough. They have great clothes for teens and early 20's and then nice stuff for older ladies, but there is this gap IMO of age appropriate clothing, its kind of strange and unfortunate. The men's selection is quite small but I somehow doubt it needs to be bigger. The staff is super polite and knowledgeable, and they deserve 5 stars. read more

I like this place because I always find something. I was there Saturday and picked up a few things and went back Sunday to get a few more but not ONE employee can greet me? No one? That's rude and it's bad customer service so I put my stuff back and walked out. Unfortunately it was the same way Saturday too and I just brushed it off but no more. Yeah, much of the clothing is for an older AARP aged group but there are smaller sections of Levi's, trendy pieces for juniors, nice handbags and jewelry. It is not a store I can do my kids school shopping at because some of the prices are more then I can offord BUT they have an AMAZING selection of Hello Kitty items, very cute rain gear for girls and the most beautiful tu tu ever. Alos thier customer service and free gift wrap(at the main store around the corner) is a nice unexpected bonus. Not the best selection for Mens clothing. In fact the mens dept feels like an after thought. LOTS of jackets, old man hawaiin shirts, and one table for t-shirts. Wow! Once again disappointing to come here (McCalous kids). I rarely shop here unless i really have to. Well it happens that today was one of those days that i needed to go in and exchanged an item. First of all, the employee here made me feel not welcoming at all. I walk in waited for a few minutes until she acknowledge that i was waiting. I was not in a rushed so i really didn't mind waiting as she was having a conversation with another customer. But, what really bothered me was after she was done and I nicely greeted her and let her know i was there to do a size exchanged. The employee did not bother in greeting me back or say a word to me. customer service was awful . The whole time i was there i felt so awkward. I always say oh i will give them another chance maybe they are having a bad day "I myself work in customer service and i know it can be stressful at times" but come on it was 1030 Am. Is not that hard to greet, and be nice to your customers. I will definitely try to avoid this place, and take my money elsewhere . read more

I am a local in sonoma i always shop at McCaulous . What thee 11 year old child commented was out of the ordinary. I was there at the time this happend. They politely ask the little child if they needed help with anything. I over heard the child say " no thank you we are just looking" I did not sense any sarcasm or rudeness. They asked other customer if they needed gift wrap and was not rude at all. I have been shopping at mccalous stores for over 20 years. And I my self had never had bad experience. Despite the fact that the salespeople are grumpy and the prices are high, I live in Sonoma and try to support local business by always checking local stores first if we need something. I recently bought a birthday gift for a child and the gift wrap lady was rude to me. When I got home I called to talk to the manager and she was rude as well. I am the eleven year old daughter of the gentleman to whom this account is registered. I often enter the doorway of McCaulou's Kids with my mother and I am happy to say that every time I enter this shop, I am greeted with a smile. My feelings for this store, (before yesterday), have been in high respect, yet they took a slight turnaround when my sister overheard the salesladies talking behind our backs. My grandmother, my sister and I entered the store at 5:33, 27 minutes before closing time. My grandmother came into the store to buy some clothes for some relatives back in Greece, and was in high hopes of finding the ideal clothes for the best price. Sadly, as we walked in, (with a "Hello" greeting from the employees), my sister heard one of the ladies say," It's okay, they're just checking, and not going to buy anything,"with a few giggles here and there. When my sister whispered what they had said under their breath, well, I was exasperated! Later on, while we were nearing the counter, not having made a selection, the other saleslady asked if we would like anything gift wrapped with sarcasm. When I gently replied,"No, thank you," she returned to the counter, and giggled with the other saleswoman. At 5:47, we decided to leave, not having found anything to purchase. I found their behavior inappropriate, unnecessary, and hurtful. Many a time my mother has purchased items from McCaulou's Kids, and we have seen these ladies before.
