It's a really nice place overlooking one of the Grand Traverse golf courses. If I could give them a 3.5 stars that's what I'd do but since it doesn't work that way I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt! Looks like a nice bar area with plenty of games on the televisions for patrons to watch. The food was good. I especially dug the tomato bisque soup - probably the best I've ever had, I just wish it had been served hot vs lukewarm. The lettuce wraps were solid - a little sweeter than I usually like but still really good with lots of tender chicken and perfectly sized Romain leaves. The meat loaf was really good - the beer battered onion rings they put on top were fire! The meat and gravy with mashed potato's were good although I prefer my meatloaf a little less well-done. The server was young and I'm sure still figuring things out. She didn't know how stuff was prepared and I had to ask her to refill my water. I was disappointed that my entree was brought out just about two minutes after I got my lettuce wraps and soup. Timing or communication with the kitchen still needs a little work. Our server was so sweet, I wish I could remember her name but she was the epitome of hospitality! We split the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp and Risotto Bites. MMM. Great sauces that paired with each. I absolutely loved my Short Rib Stroganoff - delicious red wine cream sauce, mushrooms, and plenty of Short Rib chunks. It was hard to decide what to order with all of the interesting offerings. The atmosphere here is upscale, but without pretensions. It's got a positive vibe to it and makes you feel welcome. I ordered the Smoked Gouda Chicken Pasta ($26). This is pan seared chicken, bacon, asparagus, portobello mushrooms, and a smoked Gouda cream. I didn't like the mushrooms, however once I moved the mushroom strips aside the meal was splendid. I highly enjoyed it. I didn't at first think the portion size was very big, but I was satisfied afterwards. The person I was with got the same thing and highly enjoyed the meal including the mushrooms. The service was very friendly and helpful. Didn't understand the wine menu, but went to ask in a cheerful manner. Overall a 4 and a half star review. I have no real complaints or issues so I'll round up to a full 5 stars. Would I return? Driving home from traverse city this was one of the better rated restaurants on our way. But I gotta say, skip it and go elsewhere. Olive Garden would of been better or any other chain restaurant. We were a larger group and got seated right away...place was pretty empty. Food was not good at all!!!! For the prices they got, absolutely not! I got the cod, it was soggy, and way over cooked. Coleslaw was old, as the cabbage has already changed its original color. The fish itself was chewy and very tough. The fries that came with it were okay...but the menu said they were supposed to be truffle fries...nope they were just regular fries no truffle flavored to be detected whatsoever. The chicken pasta was okay but very very heavy sauce, and add in the bacon it was just too heavy. Calamari were okay as well and so was the French onion soup. Probably the only things that id recommend if you decide to go here. The crispy chicken sandwich was crazy!!! Sauces dripping all over the plate the buns were literally breaking apart because they got so soggy from the sauces. The bbq and honey combo were wayyyy too much, too sweet, too much sauce and overall just didn't work together at all. Maybe get the sauces in the side but wow way over dressed with sauces. The ribs were possibly the driest ribs to exist! I'm sorry just no! Don't go here, find something better. I'll never return that's for sure. read more

We had about a 15 minute wait for a table on a Monday night. We had a 14 oz. Rib eye ordered medium rare. Was delivered medium rare! Also ordered a French dip, very good. Also, a chicken Cobb salad. The room was quite loud and made conversation a little difficult. But, since some restaurants are closed on Mondays I understand why they were busy. McGee's has good food. I don't know that it's as bad as some of the reviews here state, as everybody in our party enjoyed what they had. The two biggest drawbacks are the customer service when you first walk in, and the prices. Nothing worse than a host making you feel unwelcome, but this one was unhelpful and unfriendly. Maybe she was having a bad day, and the other people we interacted with made up for it, but first impressions mean a lot. The food is also expensive. 45 dollars for a steak that was fine but nothing special is kind of asking a lot. That steak was probably 25 dollars anywhere else. I really didn't want to post this but am still thinking about how bad this meal was 24-hours later. My wife and I visited for my 70th birthday. I called the restaurant and was told they didn't take reservations but have seating for 300 with a wait staff ready to serve. We asked for a booth and the front staff said they could put us in a bar booth as the three open booths I could see were "reserved". I said I called and was refused a reservation! We were then seated near a window overlooking the golf course so great! We selected the lettuce wraps which actually were very good and plentiful. I was disappointed there was no steak on the menu other than a tenderloin for $47.00 so asked the waiter about the $37 "short ribs". He assured me they were good and he wouldn't "steer me wrong". I was expecting nice sizzling beef short ribs w a side of carrots and mashed potatoes. What I received was a bowl with mashed potatoes in the center topped by what was essentially a couple of pot roast chunks and absolutely the whole thing smothered with some kind of brown sauce which overwhelmed the meat and potatoes. There were haystack onions on top and carrots but just little chunks in the sauce. No bread, no side salad. The entire bowl looked like something that happens after a bad night out with too much alcohol. Disgusting. I had to ask specifically for a refill on my tea which was obviously sitting empty placed at the edge of the table and the offer for a second refill never came. No enhanced wait staff presence just food set on the table and whoosh a quick walk away. My wife's plate consisted of two small over-encrusted pieces of walleye vs. one nice large piece of perfectly breaded delightful fish. The mass of wet spinach was inedible. The invoice arrived at $99 if paid by card with a 3% deduct for cash. We left cash including a 25% tip on the table and quickly left without further interaction with the waitstaff. Honestly a total disaster of a meal and zero value. To their credit we had very much enjoyed a lunch at this same restaurant in the fall and were really looking forward to a full dinner. Finally, there was missing an initial inquiry by the main waiter of "what brings you in today..." I guess special birthdays don't grant a gratis sliver of desert anymore? We were seated immediately upon checking in, had to move tables three times. 1. Put us in a dark dreary room with one other table occupied when there was seating in the main dining room. 2. Seated in main dining room at a table in the entrance of the room, awkward place to sit 3. Finally seated in a booth at a window, much better and a view. I wish the fireplace would have been on. One of the hostesses came to fill up our water glasses, put water in the sprite glass instead but did replace the sprite, then spilled water on the table and just took her hand and wiped it off onto the floor, I thought that was odd, lol. Would I recommend? Probably not. Would I say not to go there? Probably not. Every restaurant deserves at least one chance. The dress is casual. Went there for the first time with kind of a large group. Called ahead but unfortunately they don't take reservations, even for a party of 14, so we had to wait a bit, which is to be expected. If you show up between 6 & 7, be prepared to wait, even with a smaller party. They have a decent bar to hang out in and wait. Good views of the golf course too. Once seated, service was prompt. Waitress took drink orders right away. Food came out pretty quick. I had a burger that was pretty good, fries were good too. A few people had salads and they said they were pretty good too. Overall everyone seemed happy with the food, but no one said anything was to die for or anything like that. Tried their old fashioned, was good but a little different. Food was amazing, and the service was incredible. To show up with 10 hockey families and have a table available last minute was incredible. They need to raise their prices, 4 people, appetizers, and drinks for $150 is wild nowadays. If the food was terrible i'd still give it five stars based on the service. Great hangout for the locals. In the summer the "horse people" show up from around the world so you are apt to meet some pretty fascinating new friends. The ambiance is pretty average steak house vibe and the dress trends more to the casual side. I mean, it sits on the golf course so I wouldn't expect any more than casual. Probably THE BEST onion rings I've had since I was 16 years old. You MUST order them. The French onion soup is phenomenal and my kids are crazy for their burgers. I'm not a big eater but enjoy their fall salad with chicken and my husband has had some excellent prime rib there, although the pieces have been MASSIVE. Great views of the color on the golf course this autumn. I enjoyed my fish tacos, my dad enjoyed his chicken club. We shared some chicken wings (good sauce, wish they had stayed hot longer, we should have eaten them right when they came out).
