However, there were only 2 steaks on the menu with various sandwiches and pizzas. There were some uniquely different items though including a burrata appetizer and edamame peas. Both of which we ordered. Additionally, I ordered the salad which included chicken, cashews, dried cherries, and mandarin oranges with a balsamic dressing. The burrata appetizer was incredible and I highly recommend it. The edamame peas were good as well. The salad however was lacking flavor. It was large with lots of chicken and toppings but I just can't recommend it. The chicken wasnt flavored either. Overall though, we enjoyed this restaurant. read more

Wedge salad was fine and baked Italian sub had very little flavor, which is odd. It didnt have any of the rich Italian flavor that it could and should. This is a really good up north bar that's worth the stop. The food is super and the service is always friendly. Instead of going into Traverse City and paying $753 for a cocktail, come to this local joint and get some good food and drinks for a fair price. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary or to compare with Traverse City restaurants (as others have wisely noted), this is not your destination. If you're looking for a quick-no, I take that back (more on that in a minute), but large portion of food and a huge selection of beers and cheap cocktails (relatively speaking, compared to CA, $5 for a Guiness?...that's a deal, and $8 mixed drinks!) you can head here. I do have to give them the benefit of the doubt that the place seemed hugely understaffed, with an entire patio of probably nearly a dozen tables with only one server. But wait, she wasn't running the kitchen, so maybe they were understaffed back there? Anyway, while we were seated promptly and our beverages came out quickly, our food took a good 45 minutes. Really? Throw some chicken fingers in the fryer, some fries, some fish and chips? How hard is it? The place was busy, but not hopping. I don't know how it took that long but the only saving grace was that it was all hot and obviously hadn't been sitting at the pass under a heat lamp (or not) and freshly prepared, and the portions were HUGE. It was all tasty and in a this-is-salty-and-delicous-and-I-know-it's-not-good-for-me-but-I-want-to-keep-eating-it sort of way. Like really good fast food. Each of our dishes, the chicken fingers, the fish and chips, the fried chicken sandwich, were enough for two. Even if you're really hungry, any of these were probably a 1,000 calorie plus meal. I'm not here to give nutrition advice, but this was just an obscene amount of food for a single human being. Generous with the fries, generous with the protein. Again, the kind server who was scrambling just to keep up with clearing tables was obviously doing her best and was exceedingly apologetic about the wait time. So the two stars off are not for her, but for the average food quality and the lack of management as evidenced by the slow food service. If you're at your leisure, looking for some everyday American favorites with most of it probably coming off the back of a food service truck but still tasting pretty good, this is your spot. I would go back, but only when I know I have at least an hour, if not more, to dine and enjoy a beverage or two. read more

Wow wow wow. I can't say enough about this wonderful place. I had an hour to eat before my daughter's performance at Interlochen and took a chance on shoving dinner in here. Oh dear! We can officially cross the cheese burger pizza off from our bucket list although it was never on our list to begin with. We were here in a large party and received many pizzas. Good for large groups, fun casual vibe - don't expect anything from the food other than, "I am feeling like a square of gelatin right now." Cheeseburger Pizza got mixed reviews anywhere from, "I think you guys would have liked it" to "Ronald mcdonald ground up in a pizza." I personally was too scared to try the cheeseburger pizza. Hawaiian is less busy than other pizzas but to overcompensate they added a fuckload of cheese. "homie dumped a bag of cheese on this thing." The cherry old fashion was solid, boozy, and overall the bar had a good variety. The salad was sub par - truck to table. They don't take reservations and they said there were only 2 parties in front of us- waited 40 minutes for a table.We were finally seated and waited another 10 minutes for a server to greet us. Finally ordered and food took 1 hour to arrive. Totally unacceptable. Server came back after 45 minutes and said 5 more minutes on your food- was another 15 minutes. Food finally arrived and it was meh. Ordered the chicken cashew salad (it really takes 1 hour to make a salad????). Traditionally, in the summer, over the last 20 years, I look forward to eating at the restaurant countless times - usually at least fifteen times a summer. This summer, I arrived and was in TOTAL SHOCK that the most iconic item on the menu - the AMAZING onion rings - were removed due to the amount of time they took to cook in the fryer. My other go to item was the terrific pizza which was also removed from the menu. EVERYONE I talked to was missing the onion rings, for sure, and, many also missed the pizza. Don't go out of your way for this place. We drove from Traverse City instead of waiting for a table. Hofbrau definitely feels like a local dive. If you enjoy good, flavorful food that tastes original, move along. It has traverse city pricing on the menu and I'm convinced that the bbq sauce they used on my ribs was straight out of a bottle from Kroger. Food wasn't horrible, it just wasn't good either. Don't use the website menu! The best part of the meal was the waitress who was very cheerful and efficient. We both ordered Cobb salads, which were enormous (see photo) and shared a personal size pizza. I chose the restaurant because the website menu linked to Yelp listed whitefish. That menu is outdated! I knew when the pony tail having, flannel wearing, tie dye having older couple took their seat, we were in the right place. Very low key vibe with high quality food and service. We had some decent experiences in years past. We went there because our favorite restaurant in Interlochen was so crowded that we decided to go to Hofbrau. We were surprised to see it was not busy. We were shocked to see the prices had about doubled since our last visit. I almost ordered a hamburger for our Anniversary dinner, but got probably the most expensive fish & chips ever. Service was bad, my wife's salmon was salty. Then the bill had an added 3% charge! I guess because of the old pandemic. Do not expect to ever go back. read more

The worst dining experience I've had in a long time. The staff was pleasant but everything else was subpar and I'd advise staying FAR away from this stop. The place was fairly empty with only a few tables occupied outdoors but there was a lengthy wait every step of the way. It took them 20 minutes just to get our waters and 90 minutes before we got our food. The water was yellow and tasted like it should have been served out of a hose. The food was unseasoned and comparable to what'd you expect from a cafeteria. Every time we camp at Interlochen State Park, we make it a point to stop in here. The first time it was for a quick drink and some motz sticks. They were great. The second time was just for a drink. This time, we saw they had a 'Brunch to Die for' so we had to check it out. Boy, they werent kidding! Three rooms of unlimited food at a decent price with coffee or soda included. In one room they had an omelette made to order station, belgian waffles, eggs, sausage and bacon, sausage gravy and biscuits and prime rib! The center room had an amazing cake and fresh fruit selection with chocolate covered strawberries. the third room was entree stuff, like lasagna, roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy in case you werent in the mood for breakfast! cant wait to go back next year! read more

Disappointed with the food, for a German-style restaurant in a town named after a city in the Swiss Alps there wasn't anything on the menu that would have matched the name or location. Portions were hearty though and they did do the beer and cocktail options justice to make up for the lack of traditional Germanic food. What a great find! I was up in northern Michigan on a ski trip last weekend and a friend I was with who is originally from the area suggested Hofbrau for an after-slope dinner. It completely hit the spot. The beer list is pretty good and the drink prices are uber reasonable, but that may just be me being used to $8 beers in Chicago. I got a 24oz mug of Labatt's for $5. The menu was pretty diverse but had the backwoods restaurant staples: ribs, steak, fish, deep fried pickles (more on this later). I had the bacon and turkey sandwich which was pretty good. Could have had more turkey on it, but it was sufficient. A friend had the breaded and fried perch. I tried a piece and it was one of the best pieces of fish I've ever had. It was INCREDIBLY fresh and flaky. So about these pickles. They are nothing short of a flavor explosion waiting to burst in your mouth (hehehe). The pickle is wrapped in ham and cheese, then breaded and fried. Absolutely unreal, like a Pickle Cordon Bleu. My only complaint was that the non-smoking section was not quite non-smoking enough. It may just be me though, I'm used to no smoking in restaurants and bars all around. We didn't get to go back for Sunday brunch but the menu looked killer. read more

We were disappointed to learn we were there about an hour before they opened and we're in our car discussing next steps when the owner came out and approached us. Sadly, I must say that Hofbrau is one of the worst restaurants in terms of the food. The environment is fun in the front of the restaurant but we were sat along a side hall that smelled a bit funny and the windows were dirty with bugs. I did not let our atmosphere get me down because the reviews said that the food was great. No else to describe it but yuck. The picture attached with the side of blue cheese for out filet (btw steak was 3 oz not 6) speaks for itself. Who would serve that. I am a nacho lover and even the nachos, which I had as a meal, were unsatisfactory. Too much cheese (never thought I would ever say that) I really think that they used the complete brick of cheese. Nachos were topped with wilted lettuce and chopped, soggy tomato's. Guac needed salt and was mostly onion. Our meal was nearly $80 for 2 ladies and a child- overpriced and so badly executed! Before eating here, contrary to Yelp ratings, reconsider and try one of other good restaurants in the area. Cheaper and much, much better!!! read more
