McKays is the best breakfast spot in Bend, hands down! The ambiance, service, food and drinks and impossible to compete with. Be prepared for a wait, especially during weekend brunch because it is the place to be. There is a nice outdoor seating area while you wait, complementary water & coffee and the option to order other drinks while you wait. I've come here to celebrate my birthday on 2 different occasions and they always make it festive with a birthday cinnamon roll! The pastries are too die for and the cinnamon roll is so soft, fluffy, cinnamon filled and topped with an amazing frosting. The mimosas are beautiful with the little strawberry! I came here Saturday and had the most amazing server, Meadow. Not only did she provide excellent service, but she was friendly, personable and made everyone in her section feel special! I ordered the eggs Benedict with the quinoa veggie patty which made it stand out from others I've had. The hollandaise sauce was so creamy and there was just the right amount. The potatoes were perfect and I appreciated the Portland ketchup and hot sauce. I also had my first Bloody Mary and it was honestly a bit too strong, but presented beautifully and pretty tasty. Remembered I had a good breakfast here about 7 years ago so a return when I was in town was in order. The daily special was a carnitas hash so that was the order. After drinks ( small carafe of coffee)were delivered the waiter dropped off their standard butter scone. Meal came up not quick not slow. Looked great, tasted better. Almost too big for me, and I have a hearty appetite. Quaint space...remodeled old house? Service was attentive. Ok, so this place is delicious! It was in walking distance to my hotel so I took on the adventure. Sidewalks made it safe. All of the staff I encountered were very helpful, nice and polite. I was seated right away in the tent. I was surprised how warm it was in there. I was served water right away and asked if I wanted anything else to drink so I ordered their seasonal mimosa that was a Moscow Mule mimosa. It was delicious and very dangerous. It was light and felt like a nice bubbly water that you wanted to keep drinking. The raspberries really settled in and infused the drink very nicely. To eat I order the Smith Rock Benedict with a side of avocado and wow, delicious! I wasn't a fan of the potatoes though. To my liking they were a bit too thick which made them hard to eat and not seasoned enough for the size of the pieces. They were a bit hard which made it also hard to eat. Their smoky ketchup made them easier to eat but just for a little bit (I don't eat that much ketchup) but some my find them delicious and to perfection. Overall this place is in my "must come back" when I'm back here. Do come and try all of the different dishes they have. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. read more

We drove into Bend for the first time ever and found the best breakfast place in town! Thanks to Yelp of course!! There was a 30-45 minute wait but Bloody Marys by the fire pit outside on a beautiful sunny morning was the perfect wait. We met some wonderful new friends around that fire pit!! Service is very friendly and attentive and the food is delicious and fresh. The atmosphere is open and folks were chatting with neighboring tables as if we were all one big family! I visited McKay's with my partner and his family for the first time last week. It is a solid place to go for breakfast/brunch. As such, be prepared to wait as there are no reservations. The nice thing is though, that the waiting list is online so you can see where you are in line and you can order drinks while you're waiting. There are also multiple seating areas to wait in so that you aren't just standing in the parking lot or waiting in your car the whole time. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with potatoes and my partner ordered the stuffed French toast. The servings here are large - I took half of my plate home and ate it for a second meal. The biscuits and gravy were really good, there were large pieces of sausage in the gravy and the potatoes were crispy. Will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Bend! read more

We were leaving town Sunday morning and wanted a good breakfast, and after reading reviews I decided McKay Cottage was the goal. They were booming around 8am when we pulled in, filing in from the packed lot into both the outdoor seating area as well as inside. We ordered take-out from an extremely friendly and courteous gentleman, opting for 2 All Americans with specialty scones, bacon, and coffees. The food was ready SHOCKINGLY fast, especially considering the amount of business they were doing. First off, everything was hot and made to order. The potatoes were the star...very crispy and lightly salted perfection. The bacon was also cooked crispy and just right, not undercooked and soggy like many places. The eggs were cooked well, although slightly too buttery for our taste. The scones we could've done without. We'd paid for specialty items, apple toffee and Marion berry, and we were pretty underwhelmed. Flavors weren't there and the berry one was quite over baked. We found the service to be exceptional. The portions were great...we were definitely not left hungry. We'd return for sure, but would just skip the extra cost of the speciality scones. read more

What a terrific weekend brunch idea! We were visiting from out of town and picked this restaurant off of yelp and was pleasantly surprised. We sat outside on a brisk Saturday morning to be met with blankets and a fire pit in the middle of our table. Our fur-baby was treated with a fresh bowl of water and a biscuit that was huge! There was a wait for the food but they bring out your pastries early while they are processing all the orders. Food was delicious and many, if not all, of the items are made from scratch and have a homemade taste to it. The pancakes were soft, moist and had flavor. The chicken sausage seemed freshly cooked and not in a microwave. They really must use fresh ingredients because my intestines were not giving me hell as they usually do when I eat greasy, processed heavily sweet items. At the recommendation of our waitress from the night before (and backed up by these reviews), we stopped by for breakfast on our way out of town. I thought we had gotten an early enough start for a Sunday, but it was already packed well before 10a with an hour-long wait. We opted to order for takeout and eat it on a bench in the parking lot as we couldn't wait that long for table service. I ordered the huevos rancheros and my partner got the Newport omelette. The staff were super friendly despite being slammed, and the cashier in the bakery even personally filled up our water bottles. We got our food after only about 20 minutes. The bench we had planned on sitting at was now occupied, but I saw some picnic tables at the back of the restaurant that were unoccupied (or perhaps were staff break tables). We explained that we were only passing through and didn't have a place to bring our food back to, and they agreed to let us sit there with our takeout. Shortly after, they realized they needed to accommodate a large party, but let us sit at the patio tables that were a little further behind the restaurant. They even went so far as to clean off the tables and chairs for us, which was above and beyond for people who weren't getting table service! The food itself was actually pretty underwhelming for a restaurant that was voted Best Breakfast. My eggs were really underseasoned and actually fairly bland. My partner enjoyed his omelette enough, but wasn't blown away by the quality. McKay Cottage was still worth a stop, but mostly because the service was so dang good! read more

Invisibly hidden down a side street below a dental office pet shop parking lot, with terribly little parking of their own, MacKays is sustained by quality of food, polite service by a well TRAINED staff. My most recent visit, however, revealed another truth, success happens.... To the best of them. We had brunch on the pavers, not the grass, with dozens of others, under a huge permanent tent. Our mimosa was fresh and bubbly, and the bruch was tasty. But, unbeknownst to the current generation of brunches, the soul of the place had faded, maybe from overuse, over love. The Benedict's were uneven, some lacked more than a dollop of that gorgeous sauce. The house potatoes were there, but dry and lifeless. The crown is slightly askew, no longer sparkling, but with a sheen. Keep on you new generation of fans. You won't know the difference. We visited McKay Cottage Restaurant for our first breakfast in town and I would say it was one of the best breakfast I've ever had. There was a 30 minute wait but they have benches and shade and will take your drink order while you're waiting. We were seated on the patio which is very shaded and comfortable. My group ordered the Strawberry Crepes with vanilla yogurt, Baja Chicken Hash Stack and the Special Hash with a berry scone. The crepes were filled with chantilly cream and topped with fresh strawberries and were delicious. The vanilla yogurt served with them was amazing. If you have anything with fruit this yogurt is the best compliment. It has a custard consistency and just tasted so good. The stack was really good too. It's made of corn tortillas stacked with pulled chicken and a ton of other stuff like poblanos and potatoes. Then it's topped with poached eggs and hollandaise. We added some of their hot sauce and it was the perfect combination of flavors. And the serving is huge if you're a big eater. The special was a potato hash with applewood smoked bacon, poached eggs, hollandaise and avocado. It was very tasty. We added the berry scone which was a huge piece and delicious. Everything we ordered tasted amazing and the service was excellent. Our waiter was great. Make sure you check out the pastry case inside. I also got the special scone of the day - huckleberry peach which came warmed up. Our other order was a three stack blueberry pancakes with the blueberries inside the batter (you can have it on top if you want). The pancakes were good, but even the plain buttermilk pancakes had a lemon essence to them. I enjoyed the lemon taste, but not everyone in my party agreed. The portions were huge! I think this is my new favorite brunch place ever. The food is incredible and the service even better! We ordered the chai, drip coffee, McKay cottage potato scramble, and the cannon ball Benedict. We also ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes, but they forgot it. It worked out perfectly tho bc we were so full. They ended up giving us a free single pancake, and omg it was amazing. If you like crab, you have to try their cannon Benedict; it has big shrimp and crab all throughout the dish. It also comes with this delicious butter scone with marionberry jam. The little fruit cup was so fresh, and worked well to cut through the heaviness of the dish. I also strongly recommend the chai. I'm always hesitant to order chai at restaurants bc I'm so disappointed when they're tasteless. Not the case here; really delicious chai that has distinctive flavors and satisfying creaminess. If you're covid conscious, rest assured that they have plenty of outdoor seating. I definitely struggled with my review and maybe if I had been seated somewhere else, I would have ranked this restaurant higher. I stopped by here on a Tuesday around noon and was told the wait would be about half an hour. There were a lot of people waiting, sitting on the curb or wherever they could. We were seated in about the time we had been told, and our waitress came to the table with menus immediately. She asked if we needed time or if we were ready. I asked what she would recommend and was only able to list one of the options before she cut me off and said that was a good choice. The interaction felt rushed and like she was trying to move us along, but I ignored it. I ordered the west coast Benedict and it could have been good, but the turkey had kind of an old lunch meat flavor to it (and I would not have been surprised if that's what it was). Because of where I was sitting, I could see behind the pastry counter. I was glad I hadn't gone with my other option, which would have included a "fresh" scone on the side....which basically meant a scone that they threw into the microwave to make it seem warm and fresh. Also, the scones were really close to the ground (right below the microwave and left out in the open....so fresh with germs). Toward the end of the meal, my friend and I talked about getting some scones to go and when I walked up to the case, there were flies sitting on several of the items or flying through the case. Needless to say, I passed. This place needs to slow down and clean up. read more
