This was by far the best BB brisket and sausage we have had in Texas! We were sad we were unable to get any ribs (they were sold out), but that will be on our list next time around! The sauce is amazing! The sides, yams, and potato salad were just so-so, but the service was great. This was a traditional down home back yard bbq experience! Probably once a month or so Dad would send roast, chicken, sausage, ribs, brisket) out to Earl's to prepare them for our family. The barbecue never failed. I give it a 5 for overall experience and quality of food. This is one of those TX old school BBQ joints worth traveling to. It's definitely off the main drag. Owners living on site as part of a boat storage business. They've been in business 50 years and three generations. The building shows it's age and history. I count that as a plus. The smoke has infiltrated every corner of ever building. There is indoor seating, screened seating and open air picnic seating. Your choice. Old beer signs and photos from the past adorn the patchwork walls. It's a family operation, and children of the owners were playing outside. Another plus IMHO. They greeted my like family and it wasn't busy so I actually got table service and my drink filled twice. It was relaxed and casual. The food. First I'm generally one who prefers BBQ WITHOUT sauce. Good smoked meat should stand alone. But my plate came drizzled with their home made sauce. And I'm glad it did. The sauce complimented the meat perfectly. I would have missed out had ordered my plate dry. I got ribs, brisket and chicken. The chicken was a tiny bit dry but flavor was perfect. Smoked chicken skin is usually tough and bitter IMHO. But this skin was great. The ribs were served onthe bottom of the pile and soaked up all the fat and juice from the other meats. The meat fell off the bone and was very flavorful. Brisket is usually not my favorite of the meats but here it was. It was chunked rather than sliced and each piece had a nice bit of the charred crispy ends. They left a generous amount of fat on too which I think makes the meat more moist. The brisket really brought the meal home. The beans were average but I really like the potato salad it was cold and tangy just the way I like it. Perfect. The whole plate was served and presented stacked. It looked really nice. Not that presentation is an expectation at a BBQ joint but it really made me excited about what I was about to partake. read more

This is an oldie but a goodie. As I understand it, Mr Early started his business about the same time that Lake Conroe started filling up for the first time. He offered boat storage, tree trimming, along with other services and... amazing, old-style Texas BBQ. Mr Early was an icon on the Northern shores of Lake Conroe. His Grandchildren have taken up the torch and continued to make mouth watering BBQ, honoring Mr. Early's original techniques. The result is fork tender sliced beef and falling off the bone ribs with a nice salt & pepper bark and light smoky flavor that is the result of a careful and experienced pit master. The sides are as good as the meat. The beans are everything you could want, the potato salad a "mashed potato" style that is both innovative and traditional at the same time. The sauce is vinegary and sweet without being overpowering, a perfect complement to the excellent meats. If you are in the area on the weekend, take the time to make the trek to Early's BBQ. Off the beaten path and well worth the extra mile to get there and a bargain when compared to Pappa's BBQ or other chain. BBQ sauce was excellent. Just the perfect sweet spicy mix. Not spicy hot at all. Brisket was perfect, the chicken very good and was not over smokey. Pork Ribs were fall off the bone excellent. And I usually don't get sausage at any BBQ place but this was a very good combination of spice and perfect with the sauce. Go drive to it. Early's BBQ is always 5-Star! They had a steady line of 3-4 customers in line, it was around 1 pm on a Saturday/Sunday. They were out of peach cobbler :-( but that just shows you how good it is! They were about out of sausage at that time too; again - that's how fast it goes. The ribs were tender and fall off the bone and the brisket was delicious as usual. Early's always tastes awesome! A little shack with smoke smell permeating it's boards, this place is nothing to look at, but the parking lot full of locals smiling and hugging, laughing and shooting the bull tells the real story--this is a local institution. Where folks gather to enjoy great food. We had the brisket (amazing), the sausage (nom nom nom), and the shredded beef (good). Their potato salad was a highlight. The ladies who helped us were very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and exactly what I was looking for. The sausage was my favorite! Lophelia, the Pitmaster is a Peach! She is the daughter of the late founder Mr. Early, who passed from a heart attack some 17 years ago while tending his pit. In other words, he went out with his boots on. I salute him in Heaven. Now to the digs and the food. Charming throwback nestled in the pines well off the beaten path on the far N side of the lake. Terrific lean brisket. Perfect amount of moisture, smoke, texture, tenderness, color and aroma. Nice bark too. Not too peppery, just right. Above average sausage. Notable ribs. They even have burnt ends, which actually made my heart skip a beat so. World class potato salad, and the beans are simply canned Ranch Style. I rather like them myself. Pro Note: The sauce is a little tangy and gooey, but still nice. Have them leave it OFF the brisket. Get it on the side. It's ok drizzled over the other meats, however the brisket needs no sauce. Trust me on this one. Lastly, they're only open on weekends. And there was some mention in previous reviews of the place being a little dirty. Didn't see that. This is one of the best BBQ places, not a lot of extras on the side, but what they do have they do well. The ribs are always tender, fall-off the bone and delicious! Worth the drive if you are coming from Houston, plus you can always make a picnic of it and go to Lake Conroe, there is a national forest nearby with lake access. My review might not be fair because I compare the BBQ to the days when Early was alive and cooking it. Now it's turned over to his kids. Honestly, it's not as consistently outstanding as it was when he was getting up through the night to check on the meat and brush it with sauce. Early was quite committed to making sure his BBQ was the absolute best around. He bought the best meat and did what it took to make it the best. I can't blame anyone for not wanting to get up in the middle of the night and do what Early did to make it the best. It is good BBQ, just not the absolute best-hands-down like it used to be. Still, I make a point to go out there occasionally when I'm passing through. I enjoy the setting and nostalgia of good memories had there. The place needs a good cleaning. read more

Well, DISAPPOINTMENT doesn't even begin to describe my feelings. 1st the lady working needs to work on her customer service skills and secondly, if you are going to bring your daughter to work, make sure she understands you are working! The food..well let's say it is less than desirable. The chicken couldn't even be cut with a chainsaw if we tried!
