Great place to visit! Coffee was prepared in a timely fashion. Plenty of seating all around. They serve burritos on the weekends which smelled delicious. Would come again Vegan friendly

We are always on the look out for local coffee spots and when a friend suggested this one I knew I had to try it. Of course I go during Turner Days, but even though the line was long the team cranked coffees, pastries, and breakfast out. I love my coffees cold and blended, but at the time they weren't doing blended drinks (I can understand this as the line was to the door!). I settle for the Hispanic Heritage month special Abuela Mocha on ice. I really enjoyed this drink! Just enough spice for warmth and so very smooth. I also partook in the special menu for Chorizo Breakfast Burritos. This burrito was the best breakfast burrito I have ever had. The chorizo was flavor and had a kick but not much (no milk needed) but my favorite part was the potatoes. They melted in your mouth. They absorbed some of the chorizo oils and flavors which made them even better. I also didn't have a lot of tortilla left at the end (you know when the last few bites are just tortilla). These burritos were packed to full capacity while still being easily able to eat with one hand. I got salsa to go with it but never tried it because it frankly didn't need it. We did stay to eat and drink as it was a bit crowded and we had errands to run. You can tell though that the environment is very homey and welcoming. I could easily see myself staying to enjoy a cup of coffee and a friendly conversation. Overall I can't wait to go back!

My first visit to Windmill today was a stop on The Caffeine Crawl. The Turner neighborhood of south central KCK is a bit out of the way and unless you are visiting the high school or Christie's for a tenderloin you probably won't be driving past The Windmil. After my visit today, I would recommend getting off the main roads and make a pitstop. The hospitality and genuine friendliness comes through as soon as you walk in. The vibe is like walking into a small town cafe on the Texas prairie where everyone is only removed by 2 degrees of separation. The namesake Windmill is the focal point of the cafe and is a 4th generation relic saved from a family farm near FT. Worth. The mother and daughter owners will tell you the story and make you feel like family. My hot and cold samples of the signature drink - The Golden Bear was delicious. Made with espresso, cinnamon, vanilla and honey. Seasonally appropriate but available and drinkable year round. The white chocolate strawberry frappe was just as heavenly. Great vibe, great people, great drinks - made with Messenger Coffee, make this an easy 5 star destination. So fun to find little jewels like this where you would least expect them to be.

Went back to my old high school stomping grounds today and checked out The Windmill KC. This place does not disappoint, they have it all. You have your small town warm vibes and locals but you also have high quality coffee and food. The offer many warm breakfast options and pastry options from Scratch Bakery but they also make their own chorizo burritos and biscuits and gravy. The biscuits and gravy are incredible. They serve Messenger coffee and they do Messenger proud. Drinks are made properly and coffee is fresh. I could have lingered for hours. The owner is so sweet and truly wants to know her customers. She is in partnership with her parents. Her mom is the yumminess in the kitchen! This is the place to go.

However, entering this store one is transported to a totally different world. Almost like walking through a wardrobe! Clean, asymmetrical decor, a pleasant and welcoming smile. Several regulars came in and confirmed the positive experience is not out of the norm. But of course, the main point is and should be the coffee and food. The donuts (made locally) were tasty, if a bit too sugary. If you have a sweet tooth ache make sure you get one. The coffee was very good. The latte wasn't overly hot, and not bitter nor sour as is often the case. And the fact it's a non-profit purely designed to direct all profits and proceeds back into the town it's operating in, very cool. Although it's not the very best coffee I've had, it's quite good enough, and tasty enough that I'll be coming back here again on my next swing through Kansas City. And you should too.

The coffee shop is a pretty good size with a good variety of comfortable seating. I really liked the decor and the whole vibe was very friendly and relaxing. There is not a lot of parking on the side of the building, I was able to get the last spot available at the time I was there. I will absolutely come back and try some of their other items. They have some bakery goods and I asked if they had gluten-free and they do but they were sold out when I got there. They also have a lovely and clean bathroom.

Everything flows. It's organized chaos done right. The seasonal drinks are consistently creative and actually good. Not just pretty for Instagram. Balanced, thoughtful, and well executed. And the bakery? Dangerous. The display case is pure temptation. Cinnamon rolls, pecan twists, danishes, cookies, scones. Everything looks like the right choice, which makes choosing impossible. They also have solid brunch plates and sandwiches if you're trying to pretend you're here for something other than sugar and caffeine. Now for the one miss. I ordered the pepper jack breakfast burrito, and unfortunately, it didn't live up to the rest of the experience. Flat flavors, mushy texture, no real identity. The hot sauce was doing most of the work. It felt out of place in a spot that clearly cares about quality. Thankfully, the bakery and coffee saved the day. The pecan twist was flaky, buttery, and just sweet enough. The seasonal latte with cold foam was smooth, balanced, and dialed in. Overall, McLain's is a Kansas City staple for a reason. Efficient, welcoming, and consistently good at what they do. One menu tweak away from being near-perfect. Solid 4-star spot. Would happily come back.
