This place has great food at a reasonable price. It's the kind of place to take my parents to breakfast when they're in town. If you don't live near it, it would be a great place to go as a destination after a long drive on Poole Rd., or some other country road with a peaceful 45 MPH speed limit, and no bungholes from New Jersey tailgating you like they would in Chapel Hill, Cary, and Raleigh. Not my favorite country-cooking restaurant, but they have a to-die for hot fudge cake and ice cream that we will sometimes get to-go. We've not had the best experiences dining here the two times we've been(maybe those were off nights), but I know other people who swear by it. Party of four and each of us left disappointed. "Hey shug and baby" is how we were addressed. I strongly believe in respect and professionalism and it was not displayed. Small proportions for an average $8-10 per plate. Beef tips appeared to look and taste no different from Campbell's Chunky and the rice was over cooked and mushy. Mac and Cheese were watery and nowhere close to what was described in the menu. Collard greens were the only thing on my plate that were editable. Waitress was extremely "chatty" at other tables so we had to wait about 15 minutes before she chatted her way around to us. read more

Found this place RANDOMLY following google plus and yelp review on the way to Roanoke Rapids, NC. Great breakfast/lunch/dinner items. Reminds me of some good ol southern cooking. They also have a sports bar attached to the restaurant, ask for the Bootlegger, some good stuff. read more

Great find on the way back from playing disc golf at the park. Service was fantastic and the prices are great for the amount of food you get. Only thing we missed was the breakfast buffet which ends at 10:30am. Great find in Zebulon. read more

Great southern comfort food at an affordable price, there chicken livers are some of the best around!

I've been in Wendell for 6 months and just found this place. So so good! I have loved chicken livers since I was a kid and haven't had them in so long. They were delicious and the portions are perfect for a farmhand which means I have lunch tomorrow! My husband got seafood and enjoyed it very much. We will be back!! read more

HUGE portions. My husband and I shared an entree and an appetizer and were full. We got a child plate for our daughter that was, like at most places now, much too big for her. The waitress was great. Not worth the hype. Server put in our order wrong so bought the wrong food. There was a dollar difference and she kept saying what a good deal we got.....then she brought the wrong food to the neighboring table and again laughed it off. I used to live in the area and this was the best bar/restaurant in the area. It's a little difficult to find. It's located behind a small supermarket and auto parts store. However, once you do find it you won't be sorry. They have live music on the weekends and a very nice bar area. The owner and staff are supper friendly. Food is cheap and very tasty. These guys rock...had a last minute change of plans for rehearsal dinner I was hosting. Being from outta town I had only 12hr to come up with a back up plan due to a catering company that misrepresented themselves as competent. Called Mcleans last min...they quoted me 250 bux less then the other company. Food was amazing everyone was super happy about the food. I grabbed 4 of there homemade pies on the way out. Cracker Barrel but smaller and more cozy. Come here for your southern home style cooking. Just stay away from the creole dishes.

This is a nice small town dinner. The good ends there.. Unfriendly staff, lousy food.i walked in one day for lunch, was a few minutes early.i was rudely greeted to go away, they said they don't open for ten minutes.i mean I would've waited.. Tried this restaurant based on the reviews. Cisco chicken was yummy. Was told the pancakes and omelet was tasty. We received great service.

My wife and I have eat at McLeans many time and have found that their food was very good. They have what is called comfort food. I have ordered several different foods and have loved them all. One of my favorites is meatloaf. Great tasting meal is the meatloaf with your choice of tomato sauce or brown gravy and two sides. The help is very good and courteous. I would recommend McLeans to anyone that wants good food and good service. read more

We eat at McLean's Ole Time Cafe frequently and usually the food is great. Tonight...not so. Shrimp and Grits is my favorite but tonight it wasn't as good as it usually is. It was mostly grits and not much shrimp. The waitress messed up both my wife's order and mine. Instead of a BBQ sandwich she brought my wife a BBQ plate. I was supposed to get two sides, fried okra and butter beans...she brought me string beans and sweet potato casserole. By the time I got the correct sides I had already finished my shrimp and grits. About twice a year my wife and I come from the Charleston, WV area to visit our son and his wife in Clayton and my brother in Wendell. Last night my brother suggested dinner at McLean's. FANTASTIC!!! It was hard to decide what to order from the extensive menu, but I opted for the beef tips and rice, collard greens and cabbage. Great food and plentiful. Without going into what everyone ordered, suffice it to say, everything was great and no one left hungry. In fact, the other three took leftover boxes home. McLean's Ole Time Cafe will definitely become a regular stop on our future trips to this area. read more

So amazing!! I would highly recommend to anyone within a 20 minute radius. It is true home cooking (so not exactly healthy), and the price is great! Only negative I have is that they only make their famous banana pudding on Sunday's, and I live pretty far away (I just work nearby), so I haven't gotten to try it yet. read more

Staff was friendly, food is good. We have a great experience when we go. I usually get the grilled chicken wrap (fried is good too) and my boyfriend gets the grilled chicken with Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. Delish! Their breakfast is tasty as well. read more

Very rude staff, especially the hostess who seats you. Food is to expensive for what you get. Waitress even said most of the food is store bought and not "homemade" like they claim. When we first moved here a year ago McLean's was one of our favorite places to go, but recently it has started to go down hill. The food that once fresh and home cooked has started to become more and more prepackaged. For example my wife ordered country fried steak the last time we dined at McLean's and we could tell it was a pre made uniform frozen patty, and the gravy was from a packet. I don't know if costs are forcing them to go to cheaper ingredients, but it is really has killed the experience. read more

I loved eating here until tonight. Our waitress Landy was terrible. I would say out over every bad restaurant experience this by far was the worst. She was so rude and no where to be found when you needed her. She dropped some of the food off my plate and said oops I will get you more.... and never did. Asked for honey mustard 5 times. I placed my cut near the edge of the table so she could fill it without reaching over my plate. She asked would you like a refill. I replied sure thank you. She only had a cup of diet Coke in her has and nothing else. She said well can you hand me your cup... I don't like leaving bad reviews but she was horrible. The food was find but a little over priced. I spike with a manager and he apologized and offered to take money off the meal or free dessert or a gift card.
