Food is normally pretty good here and serice is usually pretty fast. However after our last visit we noticed on the check a 20% gratuity is added automatically with space for additional. I do not like restaurants that tell me I am going to include a gratuity that is not your right or your choice to do so, It is the customers choice. A gratuity is a statement that the customer appreciates your work and efforts for service above the norm. I will not be going to your restaurant again if this auto gratuity policy stays in place. As well there is No notice on the door, the menu or otherwise. We always tip well,but do not like being forced to do so. Ypou stated in your respeonse that the signs wereon thje doors,that was not true, 4 of us ate there ,we all commented what the heck,were was this posted and No one saw the signs, nor was it on the menus. I had a really great experience at McLeans. I'm not going to lie, I have driven past the restaurant a million times and never thought twice about it. It looks a little bland and beat up from the street but the inside was a pleasant surprise! My friend suggested that we go for breakfast because she loves their pancakes. We were sat immediately and they were really accommodating with giving us a high chair for her baby. We both ordered the pancake platter with eggs, potatoes, sausage and a side of pancakes. It was delicious and came out pretty fast! Our waitress was really friendly and attentive. I would definitely go back. Perfect example to never judge a book by its cover! Wednesday morning 3/28/18. I stopped by McLeans again after another Dr.s appointment around 10am. I ordered the Biggest Breakfast in Town. Specifically asking that I not get crispy bacon but not half raw bacon and lightly toasted toast. Well, the bacon and the toast was burnt. Grrr, smh. I was already in a rush now here i have to wait for another order of bacon and toast. The potatoes/home fries were very dry. Maybe they had been sitting out for some time, I'm not sure but they were not good. The 2nd go round the toast was perfect, the bacon was better but still a piece was burnt. I had to leave. I wanted to enjoy my experience at this place. However, a server, Jeremiah is a HUGE asshole to customers, servers, and kitchen staff. I actually heard him say "FUCK YOU" to one of the servers. He was extremely rude and unprofessional dampening the mood of the whole establishment. We did not get our food for over an hour (tables that came in offer us received their food first) to which he either forgot to put in our ticket or the cooks were purposely not filling his order (honestly don't blame the cooks again he was a big asshole.) He rudely interrupted our conversation to say he was leaving early and needs to cash us out. I could see the look of relief from the rest of the staff when he left his shift early. I understand working in the service industry is demanding but at least hiring workers who are nice to ppl. The food wasn't bad and the rest of the stuff was nice. I hope Jeremiah isn't there for long and feel sorry for the staff that has to work with him. Do better Jeremiah! read more

My second trip to McLeans this year. I ordered the Cheeseburger + LTM, with Onion Rings. Water to drink. The Cheeseburger was a plain diner Cheeseburger. Nothing extraordinary. Same for the Onion Rings. I believe they were frozen. But I ate and enjoyed every bite. Then I requested Bread Pudding. Good, but nothing to write home about. The server was pleasant and patient. The store was clean, as was the ladies' room, and the noise level was very acceptable. read more

This was a nice surprise-- a good sized family restaurant where the staff knew many of the diners. A fairly large menu with many breakfast choices. Our meals came pretty quickly and were prepared as requested. Very tasty, generous portions. There is a lunch menu that I imagine would be good as well. Parking was no problem even though the place was busy. When in Richmond, we would certainly dine there again. read more

Unfortunately yesterday was my last visit to Mclean's. Although I enjoy the food, this situation has become unacceptable. I really don't find pleasure in leaving a negative review for this place, however I feel what has happened is something the Yelp family should be aware of. While reading this review please keep in mind that I too work in the restaurant industry and I understand that things happen sometimes. I tend to be very understanding and rather lenient when dining out since I understand the struggles on the other side. I use to be quite a regular here, often coming for the same dish: The French toast platter served with bacon and scrambled cheese eggs. Although it was further than some of the breakfast places near my home, I knew I could always rely on Mclean's to be open early and serve a quick decent meal at a bargain. I gave this place a break for almost a year because I found a hair in/on my food on three separate occasions. It was easy for me to let it slide the first time and I quickly returned. After the second time I took a small break before coming back, and after the third I was beyond put off and decided I wouldn't be returning. Somehow almost a year later, I still think about stopping by Mclean's when I pass it. I often think about giving them another try. Yesterday I gave in-and only to find out that some things don't change. I found that since my last visit the only thing that differed was an updated menu with increased prices. The servers were friendly, fast and polite. The coffee was hot and the food came out quickly. I ordered my usual and I was delighted when it arrived. That was soon spoiled when I found yet another hair in my food halfway through my eggs. Seriously?? I honestly couldn't believe my eyes. I rubbed them twice and looked around for Ashton Kutcher. He was no where in sight. I so badly wished it was a joke but my eyes hadn't deceived me, there was a hair on my plate from this restaurant for yet a fourth time! In such denial I even pulled one of my own hairs to make sure I had not been the culprit. Based off the texture and thickness there wasn't a chance. There is a semi open concept kitchen allowing guests to see the cooks. From my table I could see that everyone in the back had hats on if they had hair and covers over their beards as well. Honestly though, they all had hair that was similar to the texture of mine. I don't know if this is something the servers can prevent or what, but I'm not really willing to find out. Actually, I have never eaten here before. I heard that they started serving dinner and decided to give it a try, since I heard that the breakfast is pretty good. I ordered Crab cake Dinner with Lima Beans, Potato Salad and Corn Cakes. Crab cake had little crab meat and lots of fillers and was ok (5 out of 10), Lima Beans had no seasoning what so ever. The potato salad was red skin and tasted awful. The corn cakes were sooo sweet but not in a good way. I also ordered the Catfish Meal. The fish (1 piece) was salty but eatable. The Mac & Cheese was fair (2 out of 10). The collards had no seasoning at all. pre package rolls were ok. Very disappointed. I suggest that they stick to breakdfast only. read more

However the last two time we attended we haven't had the best experience. Visited McLean's a few times in the past and the food was okay. Yesterday I go for breakfast around 8am, not crowded at all. I ordered the pancake breakfast with coffee. This was by far the worst breakfast I have ever ordered. One of my pancakes wasn't cooked throughly, I had scrambled eggs with cheese on one side of my eggs. The grits were gritty and had no taste. My bacon was soft and not crispy. Last but not least, the coffee was watered down and taste awful. They must have a new cook or trainee because I have never had a breakfast this bad for the $21 I spent. I will not be returning. The food is breakfast. Can't really mess that up-- the pancakes taste like flour tho. Also, if there is a party of two they won't seat you unless the second person is here. I think that's kinda crazy since most of the tables are the same sized and so a party of one would more than likely be seated at a table where a party of two would sit. So that gets one star. There is also zero parking, as long as this restaurant has been here they should have gotten additional parking. I'm sure they do a $1M a year if not more That gets another star. Staff has a fairly stable turnover rate as most faces seems familiar every time I come. Overall this place is THREE STARS because it's breakfast. Nothing fancy -- just reliable food. read more

New to Richmond and decided to try McLean's for breakfast this morning. Food was fine. Service was fine. Here's my issue... The management has decided to automatically include a 20% tip. While the service may certainly warrant a 20% tip, this is not for the business to unilaterally decide. I am the customer and I determine the amount of tip based on the quality of the service that I receive. I have no doubt that had I brought the issue up to management that they would've quickly removed the 20% tip but this is incredibly presumptuous of them and really defeats the purpose of a tip and moves this more into the realm of a surcharge. For this reason, alone, I will not return. read more

This is a classic example of a well-known restaurant that's lived off of people's poor taste and then give it way too many good reviews. Be aware they have implemented a 20% automatic gratuity on all checks for their servers to have quality of life. My complaint is not the service charge. It's the fact that the service does not come with the service charge. Our server could have cared less and it took forever to get anything and he really didn't want to be there. To say that the food was poor, quality is kind of an understatement, I have owned and operated restaurants and I can tell you that they scrambled eggs are used with the cheap boxed citric acid treated eggs. All the meats that we tried from the sausage to the steak and egg to the bacon were all cheap garbage. I'm not going to waste any more time to detail this place other than to say that I would avoid this. It is overpriced. The tip you're paying for does not include good service and overall you could have a better meal almost anywhere else. So why put yourself through an experience in this crap hole???!!! read more

Absolutely TERRIBLE staff!! As soon as we walked in, we noticed no staff member was wearing a mask or gloves. We sat ourselves & the waitress handed us menus with no gloves. fine. but then as we ordered and looked around, no staff member was sanitising ANYTHING! making us a little uncomfortable. we ordered and finally caught a glimpse at the kitchen staff, WHO WERE NOT WEARING ANY MASKS OR GLOVES. we didn't feel that mcleans was taking ANY precaution to make their customers feel safe so we decided to leave. Upon walking out, we let our waitress know politely that we had an emergency to leave. hahahahah THEN i guess the manager exclaimed, well your food is ready?? you can't just leave - attacking us. so we stated that we just didn't feel comfortable eating here when your staff was taking no precautions. SHE MADE US FEEL TERRIBLE! im sorry, it is NOT the customers responsibility to NOTICE that YOUR staff is not following MANDATED GUIDELINES. we even offered to still pay for our food, and she said "no whatever" shrugging us off and leaving us very displeased. absolutely appalling for both precautions and the response to our safety. completely unprofessional and will tell everyone to stay clear of this disastrous place. very disappointing. read more

McLean's is a Richmond fixture. It's always packed and it's usually always satisfying. The clientele is varied... I've seen everyone here: neighbors, friends, doctors, accountants, construction workers, young and old... I love the diversity. The decor and atmosphere is not very exciting, but really, you come here for the fast service, consistent comfort food and fair prices. "Coming right up" is more than a saying, it should be their motto. There's tons of seating and the booths are roomy. You'll see a lot of regulars here, and who knows, you may become one too! read more

My family and I use to love love love McLeans. But I must say our last experience here was utterly disappointing. There were seven of us and we came at prime time so the wait was expected. But once out food began to come out, most of the orders were incorrect and had to be sent back to the kitchen. By the time I got my food, my eggs were cold. After waiting for quite some time for your food, that's the last thing you want - cold food. However, the server and manager (I'm not sure if she was the owner or not) were very willing to fix any problem I brought to their attention. I'm not going to say that I'll never return but McLeans is no longer on our top 3 for breakfast. read more

I haven't back here in about 10 years. They're in a new building as well. As I recall from memory it was good, not nothing overwhelming. A friend stopped by my work and said he wanted to go there for lunch. It wouldn't have been one of my top 20 choices, but I just went with it. New building and the parking is a bit sketchy to say the least, but come to find out most of the cars were the customers there. This place is much larger and open then their old location. They were packed inside! We lucky grabbed 2 spots at the bar top. They have plenty of staff on hand and they're all hustling. They appeared to be very efficient. The owner ended up taking our orders. She was very personable. I ordered The Big Breakfast ($7.99). Comes with 3 eggs, choice of meat, hash browns, and toast. It was executed perfectly! My buddy ordered the Meatloaf, fried okra, and cornbread. He loved it. The owner came by and chatted with us for a few more minutes and then we checked out. I look forward to going back again.
