Finally tried out the legendary Ann Arbor staple after hearing about it for a long while, and let me summarize it quickly -- the bagels live up to the hype! One clarifying note -- this location is now a small pickup only spot, there are no seating options inside the store. I believe the photos on the page that show seats are from a prior location. Back to the good stuff, the bagels! We picked up bagel sandwiches on jalapeño bagels one morning and I kid you not when I say these were some of the best bagels I've ever had. I will certainly be back for more! We also tried out the legendary Fragel -- it's definitely an interesting taste and more of a dessert option, but still worth a try. For me, I'll probably stick to a donut if I want something sweet in the morning, but options are always nice. Overall, good food, good service, and solid prices! My family and I came here to buy some fragel bagels. They are amazing. They are soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. The bagel is dusted in sweet sugar and it is warm. There are some raisins in the bagels but I don't really taste them which is great for me. I am not a big fan of raisins. It is messy to eat and there is no seating inside. Be prepared to eat outside of your car and get a little sticky. The staff are young, sweet, and quick. Parking is free and out front but no shade. I've been here twice now & have been satisfied both times. My go to after work (night shift) comfort meal (especially when it's a rough shift) is always a bagel. Their cream cheese flavors are like nothing I've seen before in Michigan. Please go here before you go to any chain bagel shop. Today I tried the chive cream cheese on a poppy seed bagel & it was a phenomenal combo. Last time I tried the dill garlic (my 2 fav seasonings) and it was so unique but the garlic was stronger than I was expecting. For later I got a salt bagel w/ a small side of bacon shallot cream cheese & also a small side of artichoke parm cream cheese. I am so excited to try these new flavors. For me, the fragel is not a reason to visit... It's the veggie cream cheese. Seriously! It's the BEST! I love the chunks of fresh veggies. The bagels are good (not the best, but still very good). The cheddar jalapeño is a new recent favorite of mine. I am not crazy about their egg sandwiches. I keep trying them sporadically , but for some reason, they always seem really oddly dry to me. It's just...an institution. And for a reason. Fragels are unique and amazing -- put skepticism aside and just try one -- it's like a chewy, amazing, cinnamon sugar donut. Nothing to dislike about them. Their bagels are great. Their cream cheeses are great. The selection is great. The prices are awesome, too! We lived on the other side of town for years and were Barry's regulars, but BF has them on quality and price, for sure. Not going to bother with Barry anymore, especially when we're in the mood for a lox bagel sandwich (which is often). Pretty good bagels. I like the asiago one the best. Tried some of their breakfast sandwiches few times which were pretty good. The fragel was kind of too dense for me. I am new to town so trying to find a new go-to bagel spot has been tough! I have two go-to orders, one savory and one sweet. An entree bagel and a dessert bagel, so to speak. The first bagel I ate was the jalepeno cheese bagel with plain cream cheese. The bagel itself was a 3. It tasted like a plain bagel. No taste of the cheese and very mild hint of the jalepeno. There was no crunch from the cheese being toasted. It was overall soft and a good bagel (if I had ordered a plain). The cream cheese was the carrying star of the show! The cream cheese made the bagel less disappointing. The second bagel I ate was the vanilla cinnamon with the honey walnut cream cheese. This bagel had the flavor! Definitely tasted the vanilla and the cinnamon. The cream cheese was also delish. Had chunks of walnuts in it and it was sweet. This bagel overall was exactly what I was looking for in a sweet bagel. So my experience was a hit and a miss. I guess it depends on what mood you're in for when choosing this bagel place. If it's for a sweet bagel, yes. Savory bagel, probably not. read more

My "fragel" journey started about a year ago when I was looking for foods unique to Ann Arbor and learned of the fragel--a fried, sugared, cinnamon raisin bagel. I originally went to MD Bagel Fragel that time, but unfortunately I stopped by too late and they were already closed for the day. This year, I planned my arrival a bit earlier and was finally able to land a fragel. At 3 for $5 (tax included), it was plenty good value for what's essentially a food item that's got the exterior of a donut but the soul of a bagel. I was delighted to see that they were freshly fried and made, and I highly suggest eating it ASAP as it will get hardened over the day and become less delicious. If it does get hardened, I found that microwaving it for a bit less than a minute can help soften the bagel again. The fragel itself is definitely an interesting experience -- tasty for sure -- and a New Yorker (a group famously finicky for their bagel taste) gave an upstanding recommendation that "you know, that's actually not bad". read more

I follow the Twitter handle DamnArbor & they tweeted about distinct Ann Arbor foods & said all that they could think of was the Fragel. That singular tweet sent me down a google search vortex and I was sad to learn that they closed about a year ago. Then, this past week - a headline emerged that MD Bagel Fragel was reopening at a new location. I knew I HAD to go and check out this Fried Bagel (Fragel) for myself! What is a Fragel you ask? "It's raisin packed dough: deep fried and covered in cinnamon sugar." So, basically it's kind of like a donut meets a cinnamon raisin bagel. This is also the ONLY way you'd ever be able to con me into eating a raisin donut haha. It was chewy, sugary, and delicious. I didn't even mind the raisins! I don't know if this is typically consumed with cream cheese or not as the woman working didn't ask and I didn't feel like it needed any extra pizzazz. It's a small shop with no seating. At one point, the line was out the door! Although they have 23 different daily varieties, they don't have my favorite -- the egg bagel. But, when in A2, a Fragel is definitely worth a try! read more

Go before noon because bagels are made fresh daily so quantities are limited later in the day. Small store front, fits about 4 people social distanced. BAGELS ARE DELICIOUS. These are top notch bagels. Chubby, thick, soft bagels and a variety of flavors. Sandwiches and many cream cheese flavors. Fragels are deep fried cinnamon raisin bagels. The woman that works there (maybe owns the place?) is very short and to the point when taking your order. No funny business. I've been going to bagel fragel for over 20 years now. Since elementary school! We had bagel sales every Friday at my school and it has always been very dear to my whole family and all of my friends. Even after all these years, the friendly service and staff has remained constant and the perfection of the fragels and all the other bagels they carry have too. Cant say enough about this place. Super friendly, easy parking, quick service. Ideal for picking up a breakfast sandwich or something for lunch. I had egg and cheese on a jalapeño bagel and ordered a fragel to try as well. Needed to taste what all the hype has been about. Conclusion: the fragel is delicious. I don't recommend eating it in the car since the sugary coating does have a tendency to go everywhere, but in all honesty, it's worth the mess. I ate part of it immediately since it was hot and fresh. The other part, I tasted several hours later and while it was still tasty, I'd definitely recommend eating it while it's still hot and soft. The bagel sandwich was filling and probably one of the tastiest breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. The bagel was soft and had just the right amount of flavor and spice to it. The regular bagels are very good, too. I grew up in New York bagels, and they're pretty hard to match, but Bagel Fragel gets darn close. You should just know that it's counter service only with no place to sit. To be honest I've not been to this store but used to go to the Bagel Factory all the time when I was in town. I just read that this store is actually kind of a rebirth of the Bagel Factory, so I can't imagine that the fare wouldn't be just as tasty as before. The old store was always crowded but you could always find a place to sit and enjoy your meal and maybe the company of a stranger. We plan to drive out west soon and we definitely will swing a little out of our way to visit these folks again. read more

Awesome small business, they recently moved to Washtenaw from Plymouth rd. I am so glad they were able to reopen, I love every bagel, I have tried from them, my favorite is the everything and spicy blend bagels. I really their jalapeno cream cheese and for sweeter bagels their honey walnut is outstanding. They also make good sandwiches my wife enjoys their bagel lox sandwiches , they also have deli meat sandwiches and egg and meat sandwiches that are very good. This is one of my favorite local breakfast spots. They are famous for their "Fragel" which I think is a cross between a bagel and a doughnut with cinnamon & sugar. I only had it once and it was super delicious. They do sell out really fast so if you're interested in trying it, get there early. It reminded me of a thick, chewy elephant ear from the fair. There are no tables it's not a dine in place; it's basically a counter, you go in, place your order and leave. They have so many fresh bagels to choose from. They also make breakfast sandwiches which is what brings me in. My favorite is the bacon, cheddar cheese, and egg on an asiago bagel. Divine! Don't go here if you want a raisin bagel -- there are very few raisins. Not unusual to get ONE raisin in a half a bagel. I requested that they put more raisins in, but the owner said some people complain that there are too many, so they try to "go down the middle." I suggested that people who want a raisin bagel want to find raisins in it. People who want a raisin bagel with very few raisins can pick out the raisins they don't want. Seems to me that makes more sense than trying to please everyone. The owner kept interrupting and talking over me; I finally asked her to allow me to finish my sentence. She simply couldn't/wouldn't acknowledge my point. I'll be buying my raisin bagels elsewhere. Not being from Michigan I had no idea what a Fragel was, finding out it is a sweet fried bagel, I HAD to have one. On our way home from Ann Arbour this was the last stop, since I had no idea what they were I pointed to the cinnamon bagels and asked if this was a Fragel. He told me the Fragels were over there. In a hot glass case filled with cinnamon, sugar and raisens they were nested to stay covered and warm. The taste so simple, so good truely yummy! For my taste too plain, not greasy or much more than a regular bagel but a great treat and nice experience nonetheless. read more

I'm so happy that they reopened off of Washtenaw. My girlfriend was so upset that they left their Plymouth Road location because of new landlords. So, when I tried them for the first time, my expectations were SUPER high (which is usually a recipe for disaster). It did not disappoint! Their cream cheese is some of the best I ever had, their bagels ARE, perhaps, the best I ever had (and I grew up on NY bagels). Their breakfast sandwiches are out of this world! My ONLY note is it would be cool if they had some sort of system set up to order online (phones are often busy/unanswered) and so customers know exactly what bagels are in stock. read more
