Great sandwiches, even better salads. This place is very small which is the only reason I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars. It's great that they are so busy, but it makes it hard to find a place to sit without feeling like you are in the way of the people coming in to order. I have not been disappointed with anything I have ordered and I've been there several times. My top choice would be The Park Place either made into the sandwich or the salad, it's very tasteful and worth the price. The staff is friendly and fast. Again they are very busy, but they still give good service. Another solid choice is the turkey sandwich, the turkey is moist and they don't skimp on it. One of my favorite lunch places! read more

I really really want to give this place five stars, because the food was AMAZING. I really really want to go back and eat all of the things. The reason I won't anytime soon is because of the staff. I totally appreciate low key interactions with waitstaff and cashiers. I don't need to be smiled at and to be waited on hand and foot, but these guys were beyond rude. I felt like i was intruding on their time as I waited for my to go order. It was really uncomfortable, and I'm USED to aloof hipster waitstaff. If you don't mind extremely unhelpful waitstaff and want amazing food, then you should totally go here. I am really torn between a 3 or 4 star rating. If I just had the chicken salad sandwich I probably would have given it the 4 but I had the tomato basil soup as well. The soup was not bad but it was just an extremely basic tomato soup. The sandwich however was a delight! First it was on some amazing sourdough bread that was toasted at perfection. The chicken was fresh and loaded with flavor and it was folded into what I assumed is a tomato paste, it has onions and red bell pepper and a very light coat of mayo on the bread. The staff is friendly and Portland weird but it goes great with the atmosphere. The price was a little shocking at sixteen for the soup, sandwich & tea. First: the sandwiches and salads are delicious. I love the food here and feel fortunate these guys are close to my home. I also really enjoy supporting their business. I took away one star due to the underwhelming service provided by the cashier. I have a feeling his grumpy "I don't give a sh**" attitude is some sort of persona he works pretty hard at. Doesn't really come across as his natural disposition. I don't let it get to me at all - in fact I rather enjoy coming in and playing up my bubbly, blonde, overly friendly persona. It's good fun. I totally recommend this shop. Just expect minimal interaction and grunting when you order at the counter. Since MCB is in the neighbourhood where I work, we go here sometimes for lunch. Yes, their sandwiches are amazingly delicious! Love them! But, I agree with some of the other lower-star reviewers that it feels a bit pricy for a sandwich. Been here a couple of times and I love it each time. What I really like is they are a gourmet sandwich shop with great ingredients (high quality) but are still accessible. I tend to be a picky eater and they are happy to leave off items that I cannot eat on their sandwiches. I have been to other gourmet sandwich shops that have some elaborate choices and no changes allowed so I can't eat there. Never had a bad experience here. I know most Portlanders would say Bunk is their favorite sandwich place (and I do love Bunk), but Meat Cheese Bread is my go-to place for sandwiches. The smoked ham sandwich (which was moved to the breakfast menu but is available all day) is my favorite, and at $5, is the best deal there. The bun is house made and lightly toasted, the aioli is tangy but not too mayo-y, and there is SO much ham. I find myself craving this sandwich. The turkey sandwich sounds pretty basic (turkey, havarti, bacon, onion, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, which I skipped, on sourdough), is quite filling and delicious. The chewy sourdough and crunchy bacon add good texture, and it's high-quality turkey, not your average slimy, ultra-thin, deli turkey. I've also tried the pulled pork sandwich, which is definitely more a knife-and-fork endeavor. I like the juicy sauce is and the hicama slaw, it's just really messy to eat. Egg salad on croissant - lots of flavor! Very rich. There's also always some sort of locally made and house-made desserts that are quite good. read more

Everything I saw coming off the counter looked amazing.The name Meat Cheese Bread does not do justice to what you'll find inside. In fact, I fell in love with something that wasn't even on bread... it was on a tortilla. We got the breakfast burrito which, as I was wolfing it down, was praying that it would just keep going. When it ended, I considered getting another for the road but the shame of eating two in one sitting seemed like too much to bear! We also got a BLT. Something about the bacon and the sauce blew my mind. Juice big slices of tomato - definitely would get this one again too. I can't wait to go back and try their other breakfast sammys. I love all things porky with creative flair, artisanal bread, hell even the throng of wanna-be hipsters outside didn't bother me. But I really just did not like my pulled pork cuban sandwich. Poorly cooked pulled pork and not enough of it drenched in a watery citrus based sauce, with a lackadaisical slaw piled on top. I had the green bean, which was one of the more unique sandwiches I've ever had. Great bread with crunchy string green beans, balanced by a soft hard boiled egg and the oddly delicious bacon relish. The onion aioli was okay, I was hoping for a stronger onion flavor. On the side I had a pickle. As someone who loves pickles, I did not like these at all. I will be coming back to Portland for the food. It is AMAZING here.... It was my birthday weekend and we were planning to hike up Mt. Hood but there was snow and it prevented us. We bought a sandwich for the hike but ended up not eating it. The next day I bought it home with me and had it for lunch at work in CA....it was super tasty still. 19Sept18 @ 11:45am. Small storefront with a few tables inside and more outside. Vintage screen door entry. A couple of large painted murals inside. Order at the counter in front of the kitchen. We had planned to eat there but the loud metal/thrash music forced us into making our order to go. Who the heck wants to eat with noise. Are they filtering customers? Too busy so they are making it difficult for people to sit and relax and digest their meal? We must have arrived just in time because they gave us a 15 minute wait time on our order and when we returned there was a longish line. We had the park kitchen and the green bean. Both sandwiches were better than average with nice fresh bread that held up to the fillings. The pickled onions helped differentiate the tastes and textures of the park kitchen but there didn't seem to be much blue cheese mayo in there. The flank steak on the park kitchen was tender and there was enough of it to add to the taste and texture. The warm eggs and aioli on the green bean stood out and the green beans seemed fresh and not over cooked. Good food bad atmosphere. read more

I got the Smoked ham, it had way too much ham on it, so much that you couldn't really taste anything else. The bread looked really good but unfortunately the sandwich completely fell apart before I could really enjoy the bread. The sandwich was unbalanced and pretty much like eating a handful of ham to put it simply. I am quite sure there are other things on the menu that are much better. Who knew the simple combo of scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon (extra $) and green chile salsa could be so good? Yummy! I have to say I get a little intimidated by the menus at some local restaurants, but not here. Although some of it is a little fancy for my tastes it was wonderful. I can be pretty simple when it comes to a sandwich, but the pairings that they have here are perfect. I went with a simple turkey sandwich, but at "Meat Cheese Bread" it is far from simple. They pair the turkey with a Havarti, put on some aioli, pair it with their rustic sourdough bread and sweet onions and you're in heaven. No sides needed. They do not skimp on the meat, trust me, the sandwich makes the lunch. All this for the price of...less than a foot long at Subway! Now that's what I'm talking about.
