Loved my visit today. The park bench was to die and the staff was so friendly. Vegetarians, did you know that your new favorite sandwich might be at a restaurant with "meat" in its name? I think that their portobello mushroom sandwich (RIP) is the best thing I've ever eaten. Worth every dollar of the $8 it costs. The sandwich involves cooking onions and the portabello with oil and red wine vinegar, pulsing some blue cheese with milk, and topping it with a bitter green. Bring it back!! Minus one star because they no longer carry it. Also, they seem to only employ men. Kind of weird. Fantastic sandwiches! Anna and her team are great, I've used Meat Cheese Bread for some light catering at open houses and the sandwiches go off without a hitch. For $60 or so, you get a great assortment of sandwiches ranging from vegetarian to the usual suspects, meat, cheese, and bread. I'll up the review a star if they bring back the brie-apple-frisee sandwich, which was as unique as it was divine. On my second visit, the sandwich was gone, to my chagrin. I tried a flank steak salad while my boyfriend had the Park Kitchen. The salad was good enough--lots of meat, fresh greens, but a little bland. The sandwhich was about the same thing, but on delicious bread. The menu was pricey for sandwiches and the selection had a little to be desired--it seemed there was something on every item I didn't care for (egg, blue cheese, etc.), when I usually don't have a hard time settling on something I'm excited about. I am really torn between a 3 or 4 star rating. If I just had the chicken salad sandwich I probably would have given it the 4 but I had the tomato basil soup as well. The soup was not bad but it was just an extremely basic tomato soup. The sandwich however was a delight! First it was on some amazing sourdough bread that was toasted at perfection. The chicken was fresh and loaded with flavor and it was folded into what I assumed is a tomato paste, it has onions and red bell pepper and a very light coat of mayo on the bread. The staff is friendly and Portland weird but it goes great with the atmosphere. The price was a little shocking at sixteen for the soup, sandwich & tea. I have nothing bad to say about Meat Cheese Bread. I came here for the first time today for lunch. My sandwich was delicious. Rarely when I'm eating do I say things out loud like "This sandwich is fucking delicious" but I did that today. I couldn't hold it in. I also had a fantastic hand crafted soda and a peanut butter honey rice krispie treat. To top it all off, they had art hanging on the walls that was so cool I contacted the artists about buying one of the pieces. I'll be back very soon. P.S. Really good ones, they do cold ones too and soup, but why would you order that? Perfect lunch time bags of kettle chips for under a buck. They're the right size and everyone, ONE SERVING. Half the size of the one's they sell at New Seasons. Those bigger bags of chips are running you 20 grams of fat people! At MCB I can have my chips and my sandwich and not feel too guilty. This is the perfect example of what i love about Portland. This small little neighborhood sandwich joint has a cool atmosphere, really intersting, creative, and delicious sandwiches, it's casual, reasonably priced, quick, and just all kinds of awesome. On a recent trip to Portland, my girlfriend and i split and pulled pork sandwich with a jicama slaw (which had some interesting twist that i can't remember) and a sandwich with asparagus, bacon relish, and soft boiled egg. There isn't a whole lot to say here. I'm always a fan of the chalkboard menu. It's a no-frills sandwich shop that smells like smoked-pork Heaven when you walk in. They have vegetarian options but it's obvious that you aren't going to be getting the same bang for your buck if you aren't down to eat a little meat. I had the egg salad sandwich (in about 2 minutes flat; I am undeniably what Anthony Bourdain would refer to as an "egg slut") and it was hands down the best one I've had. And I've had some good'uns. I'm rating myself as a fan even though the git in front of me bought out ALL the bread pudding. Not the restaurant's fault and one more reason to go back. I had the Cuban pulled pork and the only complaint is that there is so much going on you need a fork. Good flavors and great bread. I went here for brunch with friends a month or so ago and it has haunted me ever since. Their food is GOOD. Really good. I had cravings for their food just devouring the menu. We ordered the Greenbean as a salad, the Maple breakfast sandwich, a pulled pork and the roasted mushroom sandwich... wow. Oh and two bread puddings - also WOW. First off, these flavours are incredible and can range from delicate to rich. I ordered the mushroom and it was SOO good I almost didn't share with my boyfriend. But he had the Maple with fennel sausage, so my stomach conceded the logic of the situation with ponied up half. It was not a disapointing trade merger and my stomach left very happy and VERY full! Secondly, the portions are big and filling. Sharing is a good thing here, people. Especially if you want to leave room for the bread pudding - trust me, you do. I plan on getting the Egg salad next time, because although I'm not usually a fan I developed a craving for it the moment I saw it on the menu and even as I write this review. Your mouth is want for sandwiches. I think anything worth doing is worth repeating. The ham and cheese with an egg can, and will appear more than once in a week if you let it. I have. I have had trouble distinguishing between days, because this place is so damn consistent. Consistently delicious. Because I'm a creature of habit, I've yet to try everything on the menu. But because I'm a compulsive person, I'll try everything on the menu. They serve Heart Coffee here, which is damn good too. This little eatery is only about a five minute walk from my front door, so I find myself there pretty often. My husband discovered it soon after we moved to the neighborhood and then thoughtfully shared it with me. He is a lover of all things burritos, and their breakfast burrito is spot on! I have never visited and it not be busy, about a 15 min wait for food. Of course that is just about always on the weekends. The menu is easy, hot and cold sandwiches, salads and breakfast. Most sandwiches can also be salads, just btw's. I, again, love the breakfast burrito. Feel free to modify it too, the guys always give a funny look when I do, but I personally like my version the most: hold the hash brown and cheese, add on some avocado and steak. Made in a warm grilled tortilla with a house made salsa. Be careful though, they are super drippy. Not a good eat and drive situation. The space is pretty cool; I am a fan of the mural. No too much seating inside, but they keep everyone moving at a decent pace, so you should be able to find something relatively quickly. There is also seating outside, plenty of it. Just make sure you can hear them call your name when you order is up. The service is good too, I mean, it's an order at the counter, pick it up from another and bus your table sort of places, but they do everything quickly and efficiently. Probably not going to venture too far into the menu outside of the burritos, but I would encourage others to. The husband has ordered other sandwiches, and I guess thy have a dampness problem too. I've yet to try anything else on the menu because as long as that damn breakfast burrito is on there I find it very difficult to pass up. I thought about docking MCB a star because they are closed on Sundays (if they were open on Sundays I would have given them twice as much money as I have at this point... (Sundays are the only days that work for me for going out for breakfast) BUT! that burrito is so effing good that I couldn't bring myself to do it. MCB would literally make a killing if they were open on Sundays, but for one reason or another they aren't. Yes, I am upgrading Meat Cheese Bread to an otherworldy 5 stars! I recently had their B.L.B. which seriously blows the ratings off the charts! OMFG, if I had to eat one sandwich for the rest of my life, it would be this one. The B.L.B. consists of tantalizing nicely salty Neuskies smoked bacon, golden beets, lettuce, and aioli on toasted sourdough. Such simple ingredients and the subtly sweet golden beets pairs perfectly with the saltiness of the bacon. I cannot stop thinking about this sandwich!! I take a sewing class next door and I'm not sure if I take the class just to have a good excuse to stop by this place. I can't wait to try their asparagus sandwich next week!! read more

My wife and I grabbed some sandwiches before a hike. The place was empty at 11am on a weekday so the process was effortless. This is a small, hip shop with a handful of tables both inside and outside. I got the green bean & egg sandwich. It was a weird-sounding sandwich but I figured it was put on their permanent menu for a reason. My wife got the pork sandwich. After hiking a ways into the gorge, we sat by a river and were delighted by our wonderful sandwiches. The green bean sandwich was wonderful. I was directed here yesterday by a sign on the outside of Bunk Sandwiches. They were closed because of a leak in their roof. I figured if they recommended this place it was worth checking out. Man I'm glad I went. I was pretty wet from biking in the rain all day so I wanted warmth. I tucked into a cup of chilli ignoring for the moment the hot ham sandwich I had ordered. The chili was great. It was full of hominy which made it really hearty. When I did finally bite into the ham sandwich I was actually stunned at how flavorful it was. The roll is house-made and the innards are thinly-shaved shaved smoked ham, gruyere, and aioli. When I first ordered it I thought the gruyere and aioli together might be too much but its balanced really well. Every bite was as satisfying as the first. It was the Fourth of July and we were trying to find somewhere to eat lunch. This was our 4th (get it?) or so choice and it turned out to be pretty good. With my birthday being July 4th, it gets a little old not being able to find somewhere to eat a good birthday lunch or dinner. So, this place gets bonus points for being one of those places (they were closing early, and I do recognize the value of giving employees a day off for holidays, it just was still nice). I expected the staff to be a bit pretentious, a bit stereotypically SE Portland, but I was pleasantly surprised. The guy that took our order was patient and friendly and I didn't feel out of place here. The sandwich I ordered was way overpowering when I first bit into it, but once my tastebuds adjusted, I was really impressed. The only complaint I had is that they use Grand Central breads, and I've never understood what the hype is about their bread. It's fine, not great. There are so many places to try over here, so I'm sure it will be awhile, but I'll be back. Oh, I almost forgot. There wasn't a single piece of steak that wasn't tender and perfect.
