I can hardly stand HOW good the breakfast burrito is here. I've been a few times now and all the menu items have been delicious but that breaky 'rito yo! The space is charming and quaint, the kitchen is open to the seating. Everyone is really friendly and happy to give input on your order if you have questions. When they were out of coffee once they even made us our own personal French press. They have the local paper available usually inside the shop and it's a perfect place to read and enjoya quiet morning before all the hipsters wake up. This burrito though, it's grilled so it's all crispy, it's NOT overstuffed, it has only the good things and I add avo and bacon usually. Perfection! In love with their breakfast burritos. The tortilla is perfectly warm and crunchy. If you add on a meat (I did bacon), it comes out to $10. And also beware, one of the ends is open so make sure to bite that end first :) I also purchased a choco chip cookie to go and it was delicious. The space itself has a very neighborhood feel to it, a place I could see myself inviting a friend for a casual brunch without all the brunch crowds and fussiness. There's also cloudforest across the street for some coffee/tea/chocolate afterwards. This part of town is just lovely with all these cute places! I'm not even much of a review-writing type, but MCB was so good I just had to share with the world. We got the ham sandwich with egg and the pulled pork sandwich. I wasn't even at peak hunger--maybe 7 out of 10--and not 3 bites into it (2 ham and 1 pulled pork), I literally started tearing up it was so out of this world. Both sammies seemed so simple, yet tasted so complicated. The avocado spread on the pork? The world's softest herbed roll cradling the perfect amount of ham? And for so cheap! It's practically charity. Also tipping my hat to the service. The blonde gal who took our order was charming and funny and politely laughed at our bad jokes, and to boot, when we fell quiet at the words "drip coffee," she suggested the place across the street had awesome espresso and it would be fine if we brought their drinks into MCB. I love that--they're a sandwich shop, not a coffee shop, and while they offer a small coffee selection, they accommodated those of us who needed four shots in liquid chocolate to enjoy our breakfast. I ate their pork shoulder sandwich for the first time this afternoon and it was so delicious that I decided to write this. I also made a point to tell them in the shop that it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, because it's true, and I like to deliver good news. The shredded pork was tender and flavorful, the rapini was perfect and had soaked up flavor from the pork fat, the bite of the salsa verde cut through the unctuousness of the pork and brightened everything up, while also lending a gentle wave of acidic heat. The ciabatta was nicely toasted and the aioli made it taste like garlic bread. All of the flavors here work together deliciously, and the overall taste is highly satisfying on multiple levels. And yeah, it's a little on the juicy side from all that tender pork, so it may get a little messy, but you only live once and who cares what other people think? It was our first time eating at Meat Cheese and Egg. My boyfriend and I both ordered the steak and egg sandwich but switched the blue cheese for Swiss. We dicided to eat at home instead of in their our door seating because it was too cold. We didn't even roll down our windows on the way home because it smelled so good. They were so delicious! After doing a Yelp search for sandwich places and finding one of the best reviewed we decided on Meat Cheese Bread. It is a small place but they seem to do a bang up job of getting people in and out. I had the green bean sandwich after seeing how people liked it. ( Green bean - Grilled green beans, bacon relish, soft boiled egg, parmesan and aioli ) It was excellent. What a combo, you should try it. We also had the Tuna sandwich (Tuna Salad - Oregon Albacore tuna, capers, celery, onion, green leaf and aioli on focaccia ) Not so out of the box like the bean sandwich but very good in it's own regard. I'd put MCB near the top tier of sandwich shops in PDX. I've eaten at all of them quite a bit, and frequent this one cause it's close to my place. MCB always has fresh bread and quality ingredients. I do wish they'd say where the meat they use comes from though (but I guess not many of the others do either). I've tried most of the menu and the Green Bean (now Asparagus) sando probably stands out the most. The bacon jam and egg on it really kicks it up a notch, and makes it taste 'not vegetarian.' My only complaint about this one (along with some of the others) is that they serve it on a completely sliced roll, which the second you pick it up, half of it falls out. Some of their sandwiches would be much better to eat if they didn't slice the bread/roll all the way through and served them more sub-style. Visitors I bring in also love the Flank Steak, and Pulled Pork offerings. MCB has the best breakfast sandwiches in town! The Smoked Ham is my personal favorite (with egg & avocado). The salads are a bit of a letdown, usually just a handful of greens tossed in some dressing and slopped on a plate. Overall I eat here once or twice a week and am usually happy with it. The first thing that comes to mind when describing the turkey sandwich at Meat Cheese Bread is "light." Served on Grand Central's Rustic Sourdough, the sandwich is very good, but not quite in the "great" category. Thinly-sliced real turkey (no Oscar Meyer here) piled high with a slice or two of Nueske's Applewood Smoked Bacon, a few shavings of Havarti, some sweet onion and a fresh leaf of lettuce, it's definitely a well-crafted turkey sandwich, and leaves the stomach fulfilled, albeit in a comfortable fashion. There are many other offerings on the menu, from the Spring Chicken with tarragon-fennel chicken salad to the Roasted Mushroom sandwich, and enough choices to satisfy most. But I must say, I love a good turkey sandwich and there are a few others in town that I think give MCB a run for their money. The Californian at Otto's (4138 SE Woodstock) is quite the sandwich. Served hot, it's turkey, bacon, and avacado along with all the standards when it comes to veggies and at only $5.75, a little bit cheaper than the Turkey at MTB (a respectable $6.95). Additionally, the Santa Cruz ($6.95) at Spicy Pickle (1220 SW 6th Ave) in downtown Portland is a really solid turkey sandwich on wonderful, fluffy ciabatta bread. Just too bad it's a national chain and not local, but nonetheless, they know how to make a mean sandwich. Lastly, the turkey sandwich used to be wonderful at Grand Central, that is, until they changed it up and starting adding bacon to it. What happened!!!? It didn't used to have bacon--and it didn't need it. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. That is how the saying goes, right? Long story short, I will most definitely be returning to MCB very soon, and I'm sure I will be trying out another of their 10+ sandwiches. Delicious and then some! I've been to Meat Cheese Bread several times and I'm never disappointed. This cozy little spot serves fresh, made to order sandwiches. On this particular visit, I sampled the breakfast menu. We ordered the breakfast burrito and the Maple. The former was served with a perfectly toasted tortilla, crispy hashbrowns, cheese and a green chile salsa. The perfect portion size, but I was so jazzed to order and eat I failed to notice it's served sans meat! Next time I will be sure to add the bacon. The Maple sando was also delightful, with shaved fennel, spicy cheddar and what looks and tasted like a housemade sausage patty, all sandwiched between two gooey slabs of bread pudding toast. Top that off with two cups of self served joe and my bfast cravings were easily met! It's a small place with room for perhaps 15 folks, but there are a few tables on the sidewalk. I fell in love with this restaurant pretty close to walking through the front door. It's located in the Buckman neighborhood where my mother attended school and graduated from Washington High (now Revolution Hall). She always spoke of this neighborhood in such glowing terms that I'm sure that colored my thoughts about Meat Cheese Bread. And it's ALL good. They offer equal amounts of vegan/vegetarian and carnivorous options in sandwiches, salads, and breakfast items. We ordered bowls of plain yogurt and honey with granola, sides of toast with what looked like homemade strawberry jam, and excellent coffee. Our server took the order and was friendly and fun, but when he and his two co-workers focused on the food, it was all business. We enjoyed our generous bowls of yogurt and granola very much, and the toast with jam was icing on the cake so to speak. Orders can be phoned in for takeout, and the neighborhood vibe is strong and friendly. It is a snug space with ten tables inside and several picnic tables outdoors. The ordering counter and cash register and food prep area seemed to work well for the three employees. Everything is immaculately clean, although we did not use the restrooms. Breakfast was reasonable in price for Ron and I at $23. Parking is on the street only and tight. There is a striking hand-painted mural and plenty of light coming in through the windows. The sound-system volume was a tad too high, but the music selections were bouncy and fun. I enjoyed singing along with enthusiasm (emphasis on enthusiasm), and our server danced with another customer. If you enjoy spontaneous floor shows of music and dance with your breakfast or just plain great food, this is the place for you. I know Ron and I will return.
