I would have preferred the salsa to give me a harder punch in mouth, but it also had pieces of bacon so my mouth could not complain. Mouth too full. There were also brownies and fancy-pants candies, including a very tempting bacon and maple chocolate. Now I wish I had picked it up anyway. How did I pass up chocolate and bacon? I just like the fact that this place is near the "vegan mini-mall." Also, the Park Kitchen roast beef sandwich was good. I went here after a hard day at work and I just happened to want meat, cheese, and bread. Therefore, it was natural that I ended up eating those things ALL AT ONCE. Some folks call it a sandwich, but I call it lunch. However, unlike nearby Bunk, I was actually able to go there after I brought home the bacon (though they have plenty of that at MCB). About that sandwich I had: tender steak, blue cheese mayo that wasn't too overpowering, vinaigrette for that added zing. We split the Park Kitchen and the Spicy Beef. While the presentation was great, the sandiwches were overwhelmingly okay. The PK was not bad, but a little bit bland. Sure, the name they have now is pretty descriptive. But I think a more accurate name might be "Dope Ass Sandwiches", because that's what they serve. Or to be even more accurate, "Dope Ass Sandwiches And Damn Awesome Breakfast Burritos!" Yeah, that sounds right to me! I am fortunate enough to live just down the street from MCB, and thus far everything I've eaten has been more than solid. The breakfast burritos are one of my pre-hike staples. The default option is stuffed with hash browns, egg, cheddar and green chili salsa and sells for $7. I typically add a protein (usually bacon) and avocado, which bumps the price up to $10, which does make it a sort of spendy burrito. To me it's worth it, but I firmly believe that it's not a meal unless it has meat. Bottom line, either way you get it, it's gonna be damn tasty. That shouldn't overshadow their lunches. I've gotten just plain nasty with a couple of their sandwiches, including their Pulled Pork (roasted pork shoulder with grilled rapini, aioli and salsa verde) and the Sausage Marinara (served with smoked provolone, parmesan and herbs on a toasted primo roll.) Most recently I ordered a barbacoa special. All of these have been messy, but all have also been stupid delicious. I do think the price at MCB is a bit high, which is my only real complaint. I wish the sandwiches came with some sort of side. their pasta salad is reliably delicious, but even a simple side of chips would make me feel like my money was better spent. I've said it before, I'll say it again...sandwiches are the shit. It's the truth and you know it, so just don't try to fight me on this one! Meat Cheese Bread makes a good sandwich. They write the names of these sandwiches and other things (like "toast" and "breakfast burrito" and "potato salad") upon giant chalkboards in nice colors for you to order from. What I like is that the sandwiches aren't overly fancy. There are 8 of them. 4 hot and 4 cold. They're not overloaded with 9 pounds of meat, the ingredients play well together, and what you end up with is a delicious sandwich that makes you happy to eat. There's one with flank steak. Think about it. They also have a breakfast menu (including toast, granola and a breakfast burrito) and sodas and chocolates, and when I was there there was also some sort of fudge brownie w/ vanilla salt (seems appropri) The dudes were friendly and a lot of their signs were written killer graffiti-style. "Yum." That was about the only thought running through my brain throughout the duration of my dining experience at MCB. Oh believe me, I was TRYING to look around, soak up my surroundings, read the menu board, check out the other patrons, watch the flow of traffic, observe the guys behind the counter... you know, all the stuff we do as Yelpers when we're dining alone and thinking about what our review is going to be. But alas, all I could think was "Yum." The hot smoked ham and cheese sandwich on house made bun (some doughy flavored bun (I happen to be a HUGE fan of doughy buns for some reason) is very, very tasty, and not too bad of a deal at $5. For $8.45 I got myself a smallish but VERY FILLING sandwich, cup of decent potato salad (a little on the vinegary side, but thankfully un-mayonnaisey) and a Mexican Coke (in a bottle). Not too shabby, when I have to pay that much just for a sammich and chips at Bunk. The space is small, with nice solid wooden tables, some cool Klutch artwork (also seen at Pine State), a traditional looking ordering counter, and a large back area that also houses Xocolatl by David. The atmosphere is cozy, bright, and welcoming. I bet it's really nice in the summer with just the screen door going. The service is friendly and prompt. The menu consists of a handful of cold sandwiches, the same number of hot ones (mine was hot), and some soups and other various edibles. They have a fun soda selection that includes fun stuff like Moxie and Mexican Coke. For a funky-drink slut like me, that's a total plus. So maybe next time I stop in (and oh yes, I will be back to try more of the sammiches), I will be able to think something other than "Yum", so I can write a more thorough review. I wish Meat Cheese Bread were my kitchen, so that when I wake up in the morning and scratch my behind while pouring cat food into Nadju's bowl, I could turn around and find those awful nice people smiling at me and encouraging me to order. I like that you're not going to find garden-variety breakfast and lunch here, and there's no pretension when the guy behind the counter gently recommends the green bean sandwich. Green bean sandwich?! You just have to trust it. It works. The menu changes according to what's available, with sandwiches and salads and inventive breakfast items seducing you with their haiku descriptions. They're all amazingly wonderful. My sweetheart swears by the breakfast burrito, which seems so straightforward but must have magic potion folded in with the eggs to make you flip your lid every time. Last time I got the maple, an elusive bread pudding, sausage, spicy cheddar, and shaved fennel sandwich thing (it changes you as a person, ordering something like that.) that completely blew my mind with its weirdness and perfection. You just gotta trust it. They know what they're doing. I came to conquer 7 days worth of restaurants in Portland during a 3 day business trip. I started by having requisite lunch alone at Clyde Common, where the person next to me (Portland is apparently super friendly - you'd think everyone would be pissed off since it's always raining, but this is somehow not true) was kind enough to write me a very thorough list of Portland's necessary restaurants on the backside of a coaster. Meat Cheese Bread was the final one on the list, and I think it may have been his restaurant, but on the last day I hauled ass in my rental car and got this sandwich on the way to the airport. I had to. It was goddamn magnificent. It was braised pork shoulder on baguette, with salsa verde, grilled broccoli rabe, and some type of aioli. It was unreal. I can't really pinpoint why. It seemed like an unassuming sandwich. This didn't feel overpriced or excessively hip to me. Maybe it's because everything costs $10 in my city, and I have built up tolerance for all the doucheitude that happens in that town. I have paid way more for lunch that doesn't touch my sandwich here with a ten and a half foot pole. Also, it's a big sandwich. I miss it. I resent the local place on the corner for not having it. Meat Cheese Bread, you are my SE artisan sandwich shop of choice. Why is that? Because you aren't so in love with pork and beef that you alienate everyone else that might not be so into that. On my most recent visit, I had the Turkey sandwich even with it having a few things that I'm ordinarily not into, i.e. onions, sourdough, bacon. They were more than willing to substitute avocado for bacon, the onions were sweet and bit spicy. The sourdough was sour, but not overbearingly so. The inside soft and pillowy, the outside crusty and delicious. I was so glad that I went in and tried this sandwich because now I know I'll have to go back to try more of them. I've also had the breakfast burrito, which was great with added avocado as well. My only complaint was it seemed to go away too fast. Otherwise green peppers and I don't always get along to well, digestion wise, but they taste so good in this burrito I don't even care. So, great sandwiches, great breakfast, and what else? Really good fresh baked cookies and locally made artisan chocolates that look out of this world. They have really cool art on the walls and the people are friendly and fast. I love the idea of a BLT. It's got bacon, and bread, and some stuff to help you poop sometime this month. But the BLT itself is usually a disappointment. It's tasty enough but it's over so fast, and an hour later you're hungry again. When the BLT (with a Mexican Coke) is $13, the disappointment ratchets up about a star's worth. So I'm opposed to ordering the same thing as my companion. And so when he chose the flank steak sandwich I had to reevaluate the situation. The turkey sounded good, but fairly average, and so I settled on the chicken salad, due largely to the caramelized onions served on it (they're like candy for grownups!). So we waited a few minutes. I noticed the employees looking and pointing at me. It was kindof weird, but they didn't come over to confirm order specifics, so I continued reading my paper and thought nothing of it. Then came the sandwiches. His was TASTY. I envied him. Why do I have such an aversion to copying, I thought. Mine...was alright. There was some chicken salad. and some bread. and some lettuce and tomato and avocado. But where were the onions??? Perhaps if I didn't love caramelized onions the way I do it would be no big deal. But I never would have ordered chicken salad without the promise of those sugary, heavenly threads. I was bummed to say the least. Luckily the boy is crazy nice and offered to go halvsies with me (or maybe he just anticipated that I wouldn't be able to finish two halves and he'd come out ahead either way) so I got to have half the flank steak. Point being, make sure you get the "accessories" you order. And the boy mentioned that the flank steak, while good, didn't taste natural or organic in any way. Maybe they have some kinks to work out still, but had they mentioned that they were out of caramelized onions, I would have changed my order and probably loved what I got. This may seem a tad over-dramatic for onions, but those fuckers are tasty and I was feeling pissy. Bottom-line, if you say something comes with a certain ingredient, ether make fucking sure to include said ingredient, or confirm that a substitution is ok, don't just leave the tastiest part off. read more

Don't get all up in a hissy fit, because I've said it once, and I'll say it again: I'm not really into sandwiches. It's probably some weird psychological thing that started some time during my childhood when I got jelly sandwiches for lunch (I hated peanut butter), and then as I grew up letting it slide as all my friends made me go to Subway with them for a piece of nasty, nasty brown-lettuce-flavored air. To this day, when someone asks me what sounds good, my easygoing self quickly proclaims NOT SUBWAY! And I usually make that extend to NO SANDWICHES...UNLESS THEY'RE AWESOME. And friends, I'm here to tell you that Meat Cheese Bread is that very piece of awesome that I will open my sammy-hatin' self up to. My turkey sandwich was crazy-awesome, and contained the following: turkey (meat), havarti (cheese), homemade rustic sourdough bread (bread), sweet onion (for nice breath), lettuce (for your health), bacon (to counteract the lettuce), and avocado (because I said so). I didn't even need any sides...this was plentiferous and deliciousful! My friend is pretty much obsessed with the mushroom sandwich, which I tried, and was also pretty awesome. Why I love this place: They had free bumper stickers next to the cash register when I went. I took one with the cute little drawings of meat, cheese, and bread (their logo) and I have it on my water bottle that I carry everywhere. Everyone asks, "where did you get that?"... "did you draw that?" And I tell them, "Meat Cheese Bread, sandwich shop on 14th and stark..." they ask "oh I've been meaning to try that place. is it good?" I say "not worth it. they're out of these stickers now anyway" Why I say that: I had the breakfast sandwich of ham and cheese "bread pudding" with mixed greens and a fried egg. For a place called "meat cheese bread" those three ingredients were not at all the stars of the show. the bread pudding was very firm and band. The ham and cheese were pretty subtle, and the most flavorful component was actually the spring greens in the middle.... go figure. For a modest portion at a rather high price, I haven't been inspired to go back. However, after reading other reviews I might be inclined to try another menu item with another visit. Meat Cheese Bread has a well edited menu of four hot sandwiches, four cold sandwiches and a couple of salad options. The BLB (bacon lettuce beet) is worthy of trying to recreate, which is what I'm going to do. The sweet roasted beets coupled with the salty, smoky bacon is a great combo. Panzanella salad is spring on a plate. Grilled asparagus, coutons, radishes, pickled onions, salsa verde and croutons all work well together. Food is about a 3.5 overall. It's generally just above average. The quality is usually good, but I have gotten bad greens in my salad on more than one occasion. Where sandwiches are concerned, assembly and portion size are inconsistent, which I think is kinda crappy. If you're gonna charge like $10 for a sandwich, don't serve me something that's 80% bread, looks like a complete mess, etc. Ambiance is very "portlandy": colorful murals, very loud music, additional outdoor seating, etc. I feel like the space has a lot going for it, but needs to be zoned better. The shop front is small and poorly organized, and there isn't a distinction between areas for the line, pick up/waiting area, and restaurant seating. The result is an absolute clusterf*ck of people, even when it's not especially busy. On particularly bad crowd control days, I have literally seen people's asses hovering over strangers tables while they eat their meals... Although I guess that could make your meal more or less appetizing, depends on how much you like asses. My biggest gripe with MCB is their front of house staff. I've been here probably 20 times, and I've only had a pleasant experience at the till once! There are two guys in particular, who constantly act like they don't want to be there. For the customer, this translates to a condescending, abrasive 'tude, and an overarching feeling that they want you to go the hell away. This is a sentiment that I see echoed in a lot of the other reviews here. I honestly don't understand this part of the business model, but it's almost comical. Like why would you willfully put people who are assholes as the front line for customer interaction...unless you wanted to convey to customers "Yes! We ARE assholes!"? I just don't get it. Driving by my favorie sandwich place, Bunk Sandwiches, I notice the line snaking out the door, at least 20 deep. Damn! I screwed up and didn't get there at my usual 11am ordering time. What to do? Well, unbelievably there is supposed to be another great sandwich joint within a few blocks of Bunk. Better skeedaddle over and see how it is. Not a big line at Meat Cheese Bread. Menu looks great. Ordered the flank steak with blue cheese sandwich. Oh, baby, it's good. Tender, rare flank steak with that perfect bite of blue cheese infused into the mix. Very nicely done. Read a review that complained about the expense...mmm, I dunno, these are real quality ingredients at work here. Not yer' 5 dollar foot long fare schlunked together by disinterested monosyllabic knuckle draggers.... These guys are passionate about their food, it seems. Any place that has Double Mountain Brewery beer on tap is a plus in my book, too. Only thing I wasn't overwhelmed by was the potato salad. Was somewhat drier and a tart taste to the whole deal. I am a more stodgy traditionalist when it comes to my potato salad, but theirs is at least interesting and creative. I was going to say that when the line is long at Bunk, come on in here, but when I walked out of Meat Cheese Bread, the line was about 12 deep. But they move pretty fast on the orders. I went here last week for lunch. Enjoyed...Any business that has ALL DAY BREAKFAST scores extra points with me. I had the breakfast burrito and I was amazed how something so simple can taste so good. Their breakfast burrito is a green chile sauce, eggs, cheese and old-fashioned shredded hashbrowns. My mouth waters when I think about it. I think it may have something to do with their ingredients - I don't know why but everything tasted so fresh and flavorful, I was having multiple mouthgasms - no joke! I think the key here is to toast the tortilla. That really put me over the edge. I think this would be a good place to go if you have vegetarians and omnivores in your group, because there is something to satisfy both tastes on their menu. Nice staff too - and good looking! The sandwiches are good but way too pricey for what you get. The soups are good too but again, quite overpriced. I ordered a veggie sandwich which they said had chopped chick peas in it but was actually hummus which would normally be great but it had way too much. Yes, you read right...Nik Z is actually saying a sandwich had too much hummus. It made everything soggy the flavor overwhelmed it. The sandwich didn't come with cheese, which was funny given the name of the place but they were nice about adding it. My husband pretty much said the same thing...that his sandwich was OK but overpriced for how many ingredients were actually in it. If I am paying that much for a sandwich I want a lot of veggies. Lots and lots of them so that I feel like I am full after. My husband is the same...he wasn't really looking for tons of meat but a lot of veggies would have been great. Lunch on a sunny Saturday had me searching for something new. I had heard about this tasty sandwich spot from a few folks so I ventured on in to give it a try. The joint is small. They have a few picnic tables out front for good weather. Umbrellas provided at each table. Walk through the old screen door with a well used squeezing sound as you enter. There is a nice large chalk board with their special sammies on the left where you order. Drinks for sale are out on display. They had two tasty beers on tap. I got a nice lager from Hood River. There is a small kitchen on the right side of the place with two hard working sammie ninja masters. The seating inside is small and cozy. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with aioli and broccolini. It was amazingly full of flavor, juice like you wouldn't believe, and it was a total mess of yumminess!!! Loved this one but you may not want to get it on the first date...it was all over my plate and falling off into the plate. Two little girls were with me for a lunch date that day and could not decide on a sandwich to split. The guy said they only do full sandwiches and so although one wanted the chicken salad and the other wanted turkey they both agreed on turkey. When we got the sandwiches they had made them each a half of what they originally wanted. One of the Sammie ninja masters said he overheard our conversation and wanted to make the girls happy. It was really nice of him and the girls were stoked. They told me they would give a five star review :) and that the sandwiches were sooooo good! Win -win for all!!! read more

Oh my.......were we impressed!!! We were just driving around looking for a bite before enjoying the sunny day and found that this one seemed to be well liked on yelp...here I am to agree. I didn't get anything crazy...(sometimes you just want a good ol sandwich). so I enjoyed the turkey which included bacon. I added some mustard to it because it needed a little help and im a mustard fiend..ha. And it hit the spot just right. My boyfriend got the steak and egg sandwich which was amazing! The egg was cooked just right (not too runny or hard) and the meat was very savory. This is also one of those places I wouldn't go to if you're in such a hurry because good food takes time! So grab a beer next door at their sister shop rightfully named "BEER" and enjoy the sun while you wait. Im looking forward to trying their breakfast burrito next because it seems to be quite popular (sad I didn't try it this first time because I was really craving one) but even more reason to go back. read more

so after experiencing the sandwichy goodness, which is Bunk... I decided to see what else was out there in the world of celebre-sandwhich shops.... bringing me ( and my lunch buddy donovan ) to Meet Cheese Bread ) Easy parking on a weekday... VERY pleasant space.. clean, neat, and not at all piled with food and restaurant supplies... about 6-10 tables ( I wasn't counting )... lots of natural light... ... so it's a nice place, enough said about that. friendly folks behind the counter, took my order.. sat down, got my food about 7 minutes later ( this is important if you're working and have limited time )... I ordered the park kitchen ( flank steak, lettuce, blue cheese ) and some kind of roasted tomato soup. The soup was ridiculously good.. the sandwich.. not so much. Like one of the other reviewers says... "Meh". I'd eat there again, but only if I were passing by and starving... it's just too close to bunk not to make the effort to go there. read more

Mmmmm, green bean sandwich.... I have been here a few times and I love the green bean sandwich. You can see why that sandwich was featured in Portland monthly. I should try the rest of the menu, but naah. There are so many places in PDX to try, so whenever I come back here, a GBS is it. Ok, this time, it was an asparagus sandwich. I almost walked away crying, but it was nearly as good. It was by far the best preparation of asparagus that I have ever experienced. The only dings I would give it are the fact that it is too small sometimes and I have been there when angry rap was playing. It is hard to mark down a place for the rap since I was listening to some pretty hardcore punk last time. Call that a wash, but 4 stars it is. But the green bean sandwich will change your life. The atmosphere here is warm and casual, the kind of place you might easily drop into on a whim during lunch hours. Such was the case for me. There isn't much room inside (at best, enough for you and one or two more), so it made sense to get my sandwich to go. I grabbed the BLB (Bacon, Lettuce and Beets) without the aioli or butter on the bread (to suit my tastes). The sandwich was simple but delicious, with thick strips of quality bacon in between two pieces of sourdough bread. The beets were a new twist for me, but were a fine addition (I expect I may even mimic this when I make sandwiches at home from now on). On the downside, coming in at just under $10, the sandwich certainly wasn't cheaper than if I had made the meal at home. On my budget I can't see myself coming here every day, as much as I may want to. Overall a tasty experience; nothing to write home about and not necessarily the most economical choice, but nothing to regret. You'll likely find yourself returning. read more

Instead of Meat Cheese Bread, this sandwich joint should be called Dank. IMO its better than Bunk. Thats saying a lot because Bunk is dank but Meat Chease Bread is the dankest of dank. read more

I hate to give this place such a low review, but I just wasn't impressed. I ordered. Turkey Swiss avocado sandwich and I don't know why I was charged so much? 8 dollars? Am I missing what's special about this place? My bread was flavorless, everything else was dry, mayo was no where to be seen. I was just left feeling like it was something I could of made at home, who knows maybe I ordered wrong? read more
