SO DISAPPOINTED! I am always excited to try new places and I came to check out Meat Hook BBQ because of all the positive reviews, but I was super disappointed by the quality of the food. My bf and I each ordered a 2 meat combo. We both got the baby back ribs and brisket. I got the chopped brisket and he got the sliced brisket. We both also chose the cornbread. For sides, we got hot potato salad, creamed corn, french fries, and mac & cheese. Baby back ribs... literally was suppose to be the highlight of BBQ! But it was so cold and so dry! The meat were not tender, and barely had any juice in it! See my pictures... the meat does not fall off the bone. It was so dry and so hard to eat. Briskets were okay, the chopped ones were more tender than the sliced ones, but the slices ones were more lean. The cornbread was also cold and not moist at all. It tasted as if it was sitting on a shelf for hours/days. The sides were all okay, the portions for the sides were very generous. The sides will definitely fill you up. We came in on a Wednesday night around 6pm, the restaurant was very spacious, clean, and empty. There weren't any other customers at the time of our arrival. So that may be the reason our food was cold? that the meat has just been sitting there?

I love some barbecue, and would consider this to be a reasonable option in salt lake. I had a 3 meat combo with ribs, sliced brisket, pulled pork, Mac and cheese, and fried green tomatoes. The meats were a little under seasoned, but great with the sauces. The Mac and cheese was definitely under salted, so easily corrected, the fried green tomatoes were good. I really enjoyed the brisket birra tacos, that was well balanced with a good flavor. I would definitely recommend giving them a try. The service was friendly, and I will definitely be back. The interior is clean, and there is also outdoor seating available to accommodate decent sized groups. The prices are competitive for bbq in the valley, but it also appears they pay their employees a reasonable wage, which is nice to see.

No hardwood, no smoke, no smoke ring on the food. No flavor. The wings look good but the bbq isn't. The place was empty so it seems like everyone already knows this.

3 meat plate with ribs, chicken, brisket, fried pickles, corn fritters, and corn muffins

Oh my. I would like to preface my review by saying that I lived in Texas for 15 years, so my standards are high. But I've come to know that these standards need to be adjusted for barbecue here in Utah, and even with a low bar, Meat Hook was pretty awful, and an expensive regret. I ordered a 3 meat plate so I could try the various offerings. It was nice to have a choice of such a wide variety of sides. But unfortunately, almost all of it was terrible. Here is the worst of it: Fried pickles: Very salty, and tasted like they had been fried earlier in the day and then thrown back into the grease to heat them up for my order. Corn fritters: Burned on the outside and too crispy. Corn muffins: Ok flavor but too dry Beans: Soooo incredibly sweet! It was like some beans were just thrown in a vat of barbecue sauce with a few strips of bacon. Fry sauce: Gross, made with barbecue sauce? All barbecue sauces tasted kind of rotten? I couldn't place the flavor. The brisket was an absolute TRAVESTY. An ABOMINATION. It was like someone saw a brisket on tv once and thought they could make it. And then, after it was made, it became all dried out due to either sitting in the fridge for a few days or being reheated in the microwave. The ok: Mac and cheese - Decent, but it was served cold. Chicken - Nice flavor, but also served cold. Ribs: Overall pretty good, but kind of dry on the underside. The only part of the meal I would describe as good was the ranch dressing, which seemed to be made in house and was quite good. Too bad there was nothing decent to dip in it. The ranch, chicken, and ribs were worth just 2 stars. The owners of this restaurant clearly put a lot of money into the building, which was quite nice. And the beer/liquor license was good too. But wow, this place will surely not survive serving such awful food. Someone needs to bring a real pit master in to fix this kitchen before it's too late. Or maybe. The owners need to try the food? At least the brisket, it's just not in a serve-able state. I definitely won't be back unless major changes are made to the food, and this restaurant made both my husband and I declare we would never eat any barbecue (outside of Benji's) in Utah ever again.

We went to try the baby back ribs at this place. After waiting 45 mins to get seated, we quickly learned they were sold out of ribs (roughly 7 pm). Since this was our first visit, we ordered a ton of food to try a large variety of items. We ordered brisket and sausage for our two meat plate combo. The quantity of brisket was really small. The quality was in line with what you expect at a BBQ joint. The sausage tasted like the flavor you get when you make homemade ground beef tacos and a taco seasoning packet. We didn't love the flavor. We also ordered the Southern Philly and the pulled pork sandwiches. Both were tasty. The pulled pork is served on Texas toast which wasn't bad but not as good as a bun/roll. They should consider making a pulled pork grilled cheese with that Texas toast. They have 3 bbq sauces. My favorite was the sweet and sassy. The original and hot had too much of a mustard flavor for my liking. For sides we had fries, Mac n Cheese, creamed corn, corn fritters, and corn bread. The fries and fry sauce were the best. The Mac n Cheese needed to be a bit warmer as well as the corn bread bites. Unlike most BBQ joints across the country, this restaurant does have servers and seemed to have limited staff so you do have to wait for a table. Half the restaurant was empty while we waited. The space is good sized and good for small and large groups. Also plenty of parking. They have several TVs in the dinning area so you can watch a game while eating.

Went to have brunch here with friends today. BBQ isn't my fave but heard them advertised on the radio so wanted to check it out. They didn't really do a brunch menu, it's breakfast until 11 and then after 11 you can order lunch instead. Bloody Mary's are very tasty! I got the pulled pork omelette which was good, but they charged $3.99 for a small cup of salsa I asked for. My friend got her breakfast burrito smothered with green chili but she didn't like the chili sauce because it was sweet. Never had sweet Chile verde before and I wouldn't want to. The food quality was really good, another friend got the wings which were really meaty and looked tasty. It's a little pricey but most places are anymore. If you love BBQ it's worth checking out.

Everything we tried was dry and overcooked. I had expensive ribs that were tough, sat heavy. Husband and daughter had chopped brisket that was tough, they didn't finish. Also had pulled pork, dry and thick pieces. This was on a Saturday night at 5; all food should have been fresh. Sides were beans; sweet ok. Macaroni and cheese had no flavor. Hot potato salad was ok. Creamed corn didn't have much creaminess. Ordered a side of mini cornbread that were dry and paid extra for butter. Staff were young and not customer service oriented. They brought food to table, no utensils, guy pointed over there. Daughter went to get. This was a $70 meal that wasn't worth it. Know they've only been open 4 months, but if it doesn't get better don't think they'll make it. I won't return.

Ordered the 2 meat combo, brisket and ribs $17.99, +$3.50 more for the brisket Service was friendly and fast. BRISKET-Very small portion of brisket for the price. Mine had a lot of fat. It was served warm, and was well seasoned and tasted good, but again, small portion for the price. RIBS - quite dry, and the rub was very salty. Pass on these, the brisket was much better. MAC & CHEESE - Nothing special, just your average Mac n cheese BBQ BEANS - These were good. CORN BREAD - Very dry, even for cornbread, and the 30 cent honey butter didn't help. One bite was too much, definitely pass on these. Overall, the meal after tip came to $29, which I felt was a bit too much.

3 Meat platter Nachos with pulled pork Banana pudding Key lime pie Sides fried tomatoes French Fries Mini corn bread muffins The food is ok but the sauce's 1 is sweet ,1 is hot , and 1has No taste, the Brisket was fatty , and was charged a 2.50 charge to cut up or slice it . The chicken was tasty the hot links or sausage's was good also the Nachos had a lot of white cheese sauce and mixed with the sweet sauce and full of pulled pork which was very dry . The Nachos made my spouse very sick also it gave me gas and diarrhea, probably won't ever go their again .

Pulled pork nachos and pineapple mule

Super cool new place on the west side. I had the pulled pork nachos and a pineapple mule to drink. The regular bbq sauce they use is so good! They have lots of parking and are located right next door to the Westerner if you're feeling like making it a late night.

    Texas Twinkies

Cornbread, wings, salad, Texas Twinkies and chicken was amazing! Very good for a bbq place in Utah! The sauce is a little different. It's got a orange flavor to it, it's a little to sweet for my liking but it's good! We will be back for brunch that menu looks delicious! Our waitress was so kind and helpful! We even got to meet one of the cooks! Mathew was his name he came and asked how everything was, it was a very nice touch to our experience! Great food and exceptional customer service! Outdoor seating looks like a whole vibe! Can't wait to come back for Sunday Morning Brunch!

It feels like the kind of place you stumble into by accident and then immediately wonder why more people haven't discovered it. The interior is gorgeous, parking is a breeze, and the service is genuinely exceptional. We went on a Saturday night and, surprisingly, were the only ones there for most of our visit. Aside from one other guest who left early, it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Instead of awkward, it made the night feel intimate and relaxed. We ended up chatting with both the bartender and the kitchen staff, who were warm, friendly, and great at what they do. The drinks were a standout. Creative, beautifully made, and delicious. The bartender even whipped up a few off‑menu cocktails for me, and the best of the night was their matcha martini, which he said he created himself. It was incredible. Even my partner, who normally avoids anything matcha, enjoyed it. We weren't planning to eat, but of course we "sport ate" anyway. The deviled eggs were great, and the small Pinsa was fantastic -- especially with the adorable little bowl of hot honey and its tiny honey dispenser (whatever that thing is called). We intended to take most of it home... and then proceeded to eat the entire thing. Overall, we had a wonderful time. Citizens is beautiful, welcoming, and serving food and drinks that deserve a much bigger crowd. It's absolutely a place we'll return to -- and next time, we're bringing friends so they can discover this overlooked gem too.
