I can only give a solid 4 but would love to give higher. Where else today can you get "that" cut of meat that you want or grew up eating? Seriously? You can go to Walmart and get steaks my dog literally wouldn't touch. I'm being serious. Nobody cuts meat anymore but this place has gotten me EVERYTHING I have requested. I've even bought entire strips and cut my own steaks. It's a local shop and even though struggling like the rest of us. We have to support our communities. It is so funny how the mind works. I've never really needed a plumber or an accident lawyer, so I don't really pay attention to the commercials. But if ever I do, I'm sure a jingle I've subconsciously heard for years will pop into my head instantly. In the same way, passing a brick n' mortar business for years can also get stuck in your head. [ THE SCENE ] Butcher shops were commonplace growing up as a kid in my hometown of Chicago. Our family favored buying "freezer deals", which was enough meat to fill our 6-foot long deep freezer with a 6 month vacuum sealed supply. But families don't cook as often as they did when I was a kid and butcher shops have nearly become extinct, most people preferring the convenience of a grocery store chain. My mom is in town, and she asked if I could find pork ribs & tips at a butcher shop. I've been thinking about trying my hand at making stewed oxtails, so her request was timely. Although I've never shopped at the Meat Man before, he was the first butcher to come to mind since I've passed his place for nearly two decades. So I called to make sure he was still in business, and after receiving confirmation, proceeded to drive to the location. However, my mind remembered a different location and I had to call back for the 'new' location. "Yeah, the city took that store from me" he replied when I asked if my memory was correct on his previous location. I arrived feeling confident and said, "So how long have you been here?" thinking it was a recent move. "13 years" he said, as another customer burst into laughter. I had to laugh as well, but in my mind it really didn't seem like 13 years had passed since I saw his sign outside the old location just a few clicks away. Again, it is so funny how the mind works, but he was grateful I remembered him at all. [ THE EXPERIENCE ] It reminded me of the butcher shops of old. Nothing fancy, a little worn down, but friendly service and GREAT meats! On the shelves were a few grocery items and in the freezers were some frozen veggies. The owner carefully trimmed off the excessive amount of fat on the oxtails and cut the tips off our St. Louis pork ribs... a Chicago tradition. He then cut the tip into pieces as I listened with kid-like excitement to the band saw make quick work of the meats. If you've never had rib tips, you are missing out on a great BBQ delicacy. What impressed me the most was even though I bought an entire ox tail, he didn't weigh it for pricing until after he'd trimmed the fat... which was probably more than a pound. I really appreciated the honesty of that, especially since I assumed, I would be charged. He wrapped each item and had them ready lightning fast. I honestly didn't even notice him wrap the ribs & tips. [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] I left the Meat Man feeling a tad guilty that I'd never shopped there before. It was an incredible feel good experience to not only support such a local business, but also brought back a little nostalgia from my youth. I have googled a recipe for Jamaican-style oxtails and plan to cook them today while my mom makes her family favorite ribs, potato salad, mac n' cheese and creamed corn. Because of the rave reviews, my mom and I came to check put Meat Man. It's not too far from where she lives. She always heads to Duluth to buy her meats at the Asian grocery stores. It's located next to a gas station. We saw a lot of people coming out of the store with bags. Good sign! Walking in, it's smaller than I would think. No one really acknowledged our presence, which is fine. we looked around. We felt the prices were more than what we would get at our usual spots. I was looking for ribs and chicken but didn't see any on display. We walked over to the fridge section. Most of the packages were out from the freezer. You can tell. Hmmmm, $3.99/lb for dark meat chicken? Nah. The 5 packs for $25 sounds good but that doesn't justify the small amount you get. Still, no one welcomed or acknowledged us. I've been coming here for years, however, I feel it has taken a change for the worse. The "fresh" produce is always rotting and attracting gnats. Today, the gnat infestation was absolutely ridiculous. The store itself is also not as clean overall as it used to be. Very disappointing. read more

It has gotten to the point now where I buy all of my meat packages here each month. They have different packages with different prices depending on how large of a meat package you want. They will also substitute a meat or 2 on your package with something else if you don't want that select meat on the package. Near Dacula I've pretty much adopted this place to get my meat packages from as the other ones are much of a further drive. read more

I drive past this place a lot until one day I decided to drop inside. It's a mom & pop shop for starters. The prices on the meat are very reasonable and there's a 5 packs for $25.00 deals on any kind of meat. I noticed the store is kind of old and out dated. I also think the refrigerators are not cold enough for the meat. The temperature seemed a little warmer than expected. It's set up is like a farmers market in the 1920's and it didn't really seem sanitary. read more

It's been a while since I have been here. What's wrong with me! The meat which we purchased was chicken (best I ever bought), a roast (yum) and ground beef (which was also delicious). I didn't realize that meat could taste so different than what I purchased at a chain grocery store, but it does. Well worth a visit!!! read more

This guy has got great reviews and he's been in business here for a long time. This is why I came to Meat Man in the first place. The chops I bought were great but the ribeye steak, while not overcooked, was rather tough. So, on my second visit, I mentioned this to Michael and, though he replaced the steak at no charge, he assumed a defensive attitude and all but accused me of being disingenuous about the issue. This, despite the fact that I never asked for a replacement or refund. To smooth things over, I asked whether he had any frozen American shrimp. He said that he did; Gulf shrimp. I took a bag. When I got back to the car, I found that the bag said the shrimp were a product of Indonesia. I have to assume that he thought I wouldn't check the label carefully. I had to take them back inside because my wife refuses to clean western Pacific shrimp--they're just too full of you-know-what. Well, that really ticked the man off so I've decided to not trouble him again. What do you think? read more

The prices are competitive, and the staff are nice folks. They are happy to cut meat for you if you want a specific quantity or weight, and they can recommend a specific cut (say for a stew or shish kebab). You can get meats that you rarely see in grocery store chains, such as ox tails and rabbit. They have frozen seafood too, such as shrimp and crab legs. I usually go to the Meat Man when I want steaks and hamburger for the grill, but my kids love their bacon and their hot dogs. I can get what I need and get back to my car as quickly as any convenience store. I have always found the meats to be fresh, good quality, and a good deal! We were looking for a local meat shop, and this one came recommended from a local restaurant owner. We couldn't have been happier. While the store is small, it seemed to have everything we were looking for. The staff was very helpful in assisting us in deciding sizes that we would need, and even the best meat for jerky. We ended up walking out with weeks' worth of meat. Oh, and one of the biggest selling points for us is all meat is grass fed and come from local farms. We will definitely be returning. read more

Very helpful staff and excellent meat and prices. We bought 2 very think porterhouse steaks to celebrate our sons birthday and 2lbs of hamburger meat. The steaks were very tender and at 3.38lbs for both and hamburger meat was right at about $50. I recommend this market! read more

I've been going here for years, even before they moved to this location. I drive past Publix and Kroger to get the top quality meats. I have never seen anything but top quality meats, and incredible service. They do special cuts for my beef jerky, or will cut what I want if it's not already out in the case. They do have some special deals with wide variety for everyday. The fresh stuff in the case may cost a little more than the grocery store special, but definitely higher quality - even on things like stew beef - just look at theirs side by side with Kroger - no comparison.
