This has been in my bookmarks for a while and I finally had the chance to go try it. I don't live too far from here so it wasn't hard to get to the place. It's in downtown and shares the same kitchen/shop/building as Osaka-Ya. Parking can be in the neighborhoods or surrounding streets. No dedicated parking lot. There are a few spots right in front, but those are usually taken. I ordered online for pick up and was 30 minutes late to pick up (thanks work), but the gentleman assisting me was nice and has great customer service. I did get my food to go. The sandwich itself was nice. I would say above average. Maybe next time I'll try it fresh, but it did lose it's crunchy texture due to my late pick up. I got the Jtown sando and it does come with chili oil, which will pool at the bottom of the paper wrapping if left for too long. I also got the cookie, which was thin, but huge. The edges were crispy while the center was gooey. So good. Overall, good food and great service. I'll try to come back.

This egg salad sandwich was almost EGG-celent. The texture was amazing! Soft bread, creamy inside. BUT super bland! I wish they would add a little bit of salt or spices to give it some flavor. It tasted like nothing. The furikake added a little saltly flavor, but enough wasn't provided for my taste. We also tried the loco mucho (hambagu katsu, golden curry: gravy, kraft, fried egg, scallion). Honestly the katsu hamburger patty wasn't my favorite. It wasn't even crispy under all the gravy. So I think it would've been the same if it was a regular hamburger patty. It was still pretty tasty though. Service was quick! We got our order in about 15 minutes on a Saturday. We used a QR code to order through their website. Theres no inside seating, just a window. A few tables outside!

Finally found a scallion pancakes here in Sac! This is My absolute fave. Miss this when i was in taiwan and now got to taste their breakfast scallion pancakes. They have a variety of choices you wanted to put. They only have pick up every friday since it sells fast! Its a huge servings so you will really get full or you can share it as well. Will come back and try their other menus.

I've been craving sandos for so long so when I found this place, I had to check it out. What I didn't realize was that it shares the same store next to Osaka-Ya, where they sell the shaved ice! While waiting for the sandos, it was easy to just walk into the store next door to buy some onigiri and mochi I ordered a Cluckin Katsu Sandwich and my friend ordered a J-Town Hot Chicken Sando. I wanted to order the Tamago and seasonal fruit sando, but they were sold out by the time I got there. It turned out that the Cluckin Katsu Sandwich was more than enough for me too haha. I ended up saving the other half of the sandwich for dinner. As others have mentioned, the chicken is HUGE and the egg salad is a great complement to the softness of the meat. Bread was soft and the sauce they used was so gooood. I think it's worth the price! Be aware that there isn't a lot of seating outside though so maybe worth ordering to-go.

I'm so glad I stopped by! They are serving out of a window attached to Osaka-ya. You can order off of your phone and then they have a few tables out there where you can wait. I got their Takoyaki Fries ($14) and J-Town Hot Chicken sandwich ($16). The fries were loaded with flavor and were a huge portion! The Chicken sandwich was also huge! They give you a huge piece of chicken and the flavors were so good. The chicken was nice a juicy and can easily be split between two people. I will say, I think they use a hot chili oil to make it a little spicy and so it is pretty messy. I felt like it was a little too much oil for me but totally personal preference. I would definitely still get it again even with all the oil. They're open Wednesday - Saturday 11am-2pm or until they sell out. I would definitely recommend stopping by and I want to go back to try more of their sandwiches.

I love Japanese Sandos so when I saw this shop I knew we had to check it out! We ordered the Kinokodon, Spam Musu Mi, Cluckin Katsu and Much-O-Fish. Hubby's don he shared with baby was incredibly flavorful and mouthwatering! So much so that I may have taken more than 1 bite lol! The popular fish sandwich is only available on select days, so he was excited to try it! My eldest didn't like the katsu, so we swapped sandos and she ended up loving my spam! I thought the katsu had a decent flavor and the chicken was nice and tender. Mecha Mucho is conveniently located inside Osaka Ya, next to Osaka Shaved Ice! Come early, place your order at the window and grab a seat before the line fills up! Nice staff! We'll be back to try more next time we're in Downtown Sac! 4/5 stars! SYOY! :-) *Song Credit: Secret Sauce by Jeff Kaale

Great place to get a quick bite! We ordered the egg sandwiches, yakisoba pan which was stuffed with noodles, egg, and spam goodness! We also shared the katsudon which was flavorful. I also love that it's connected to a little convenience store that sells other Japanese goodies. Also fresh mochi!!! I definitely want to come back and try more of the mochi and get some shaved ice next to it.

I wanted to try this place for awhile but their hours are pretty limited. Made it out on a Saturday morning. This spot is located inside Osaka Ya. J town hot chicken sando: A- I've only had sandos a couple times before and they were lacking in filling. This one however is PACKED with freshly fried up chicken katsu that is super tender, plus a good amount of veggies and sauce. It's wrapped tightly so it holds together pretty decently.

Ordered at the window. Service was excellent. Poor tall guy had to bend down each time to take everyone's orders. I didn't order ahead, but the wait was reasonable. A couple of bistro tables out front to eat... pretty chill. Temperatures not too hot yet, so it was enjoyable outside. We ordered the Cluckin' Katsu and Tamago (Egg) sandwiches. Tamago was my fave, especially with the crunchy "pot furi" topping served separately to stay crunchy. I imagine the corners of the bread were a little chewy from being refrigerated. I was hoping they assembled it fresh. Minus a star for that. 3.75 star. Cluckin' Katsu sandwich taste was ok. The bulldog sauce must not be for me. Not bad, but not eye popping. Chicken portion was good, extended beyond the edges of the bread. Nice. Overall, worth a try!

Great service, quick preparation, and delicious food. 5/5 recommend! If you're new, you order inside and can do pickup outside if you ordered ahead. The guy who took our order was super friendly and added some Hi-Chews for us as a little ending treat, which was fun. The staff here are super fast as well. As I was finishing my payment, they already completed my order and had it packed for pick up. Cluckin Katsu - Hits the spot when you crave a katsu-sando. Crispy chicken, generous sauce, fluffy bread. Crunchy on the panko but tender on the inside. MM Cookie - Black sesame and chocolate chip? Sign me up! The cookie was huge and made a great dessert. It's not too sweet due to the sesame and salt and was very enjoyable. I'd order another one if I wasn't so worried about my blood sugar.

WOWOWOWOW!!! I need to try more like asap lol. The bread was so soft and buttery and the filling was perfect! So creamy and flavorful. Glad there was like no chunks of green onion or other stuff in there it was just solid egg and creamy goodness! Loved that the side of like crispy garlic(or onions?) was like not mixed in already! So it was still crispy when you ate it cause you add it yourself. Giving it the perfect crunch to softness mix. I picked mine up from Osaka-Ya in their cooler since it was a Monday. Will def be going back when they have more options available!!

    Katsu sando
    Suzanne C.

The best katsu sando in town! Went in on a Wednesday afternoon. This shop is definitely worth the hype. Their service was superb, informing customers how long their order would take since the katsu is fried per order. I appreciated the information . The sando includes the lightly fried katsu, a slaw, and egg salad. It marks all the boxes for the different textures and I enjoyed that it wasn't soggy which is my ultimate pet peeve. They have a few small tables outside but definitely a to-go place. Not a place for a large crowd but would be good to do a big order for a larger group. They share the same bldg as Osaka-ya. Can't wait to go back to get the sandwich and try other items.

    J-Town Hot Chicken Sando
    Cheryl K.

Yummm! Placed my order the night before for an 11:30 pick up, they were right on time! I had to try the Friday Mucho Fish Sando, it was perfectly fried and perfectly seasoned with pickled cabbage, pickled cucumbers and an amazing tarter sauce. There was a crunch with every bite! Loved it! I was also able to taste the J-Town Hot Chicken Sando, not overly spicy with a good portion of chicken. I would say the J-Town Sando was a little messy to eat, the bread fell apart from the sauce and fillings. The chicken was definitely good enough to eat separately! Give this place a try if you're in the old J-town neighborhood of Sacramento. Portions are big enough to share.

I tried their sukiyaki set, both wagyu and seafood. I wish they had given some instructions on the approach or order I should eat the sets of food. It was a little chaotic trying to figure out how I could submerge all the ingredients in the broth so they would cook evenly. The tempura is perfectly crispy, but the rice was a little brittle and got dried really fast. The texture was more like Vietnamese broken rice, and it caught me off guard because when I tried their sushi a while ago, they used very high-quality rice. As is typical with sukiyaki, the broth becomes very flavorful at the end, absorbing all the flavors from high-quality ingredients, but my udon got a little dry while waiting. Since I tried both set, the wagyu sukiyaki broth became a little too sweet at the end. My favorite is definitely the seafood sukiyaki broth. Would I try these pricy sukiyaki again? Probably not. Would I go back to Azayaka again? 100%. This would not discourage me from going back there any amount.

Came here for dinner a couple of times, the first time I ordered the rainbow roll ($15) which is my barometer for sushi at restaurants. Decently sized, the fish was fresh and the roll was filling. Daughter ordered the ramen ($18) with the red option, which she enjoyed with the plethora of toppings. Dinner the second time, I got the teishoku set with salmon ($21). Two decently filets of salmon came with rice, miso soup, salad, deep fried egg roll and salad. You also get a choice of either croquette or chawanmushi. The chawanmushi was a highlight for me! I missed eating this savory custard when I used to live in Japan. Their version did not disappoint! This has spot has become a rotating staple for me and am looking forward to trying out more of their sushi rolls.

*** Vegetarian Review ***…read more Would I come back? Yes, friendly service. They can accommodate their broths for vegetarians. If you can handle it, always ask for a medium spice level. Tips for first-timers: 1) Plenty of free parking 2) They accept reservations The Food: Vegetable Tempura ($18.95, Grade A): I like how they cut the vegetables--not too chunky. There is nothing worse than a chunky carrot that isn't cooked to its core. The tempura batter doesn't pull off when you bite into it, and it isn't oily at all. Yasai Ramen ($17.95, Grade A): Asked for a water broth to make this safe and vegetarian-friendly. You would think it would be tasteless, but it was surprisingly packed with flavor. The medium spice level definitely helped, but even for people sensitive to heat, this would be a tasty dish. It says water-based, but it still has a deep, eye-appealing dark color. The noodles have a great bite. Not overly mushy. And they stay that way for the entire meal. Broccoli, zucchini, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms, and cabbage. The cubed tofu is fresh and wasn't spoiled which often happens with tofu in restaurants that a lot of people don't order daily. Jungle Roll ($14.95, Grade A): Avocado and cucumber, topped with a seaweed salad. Most Japanese restaurants fail to understand that vegetarians also want a fun roll! We asked if they could include a vegetable tempura inside the roll so there would be a good textural component, and added a drizzle of teriyaki and spicy mayo. Good news--they were able to do it, though having to check with the sushi bar is always an adventure ($1 extra for each request). Sidenote: Why do all Japanese restaurants need to ask the sushi bar? One-hundred percent of the time, we eagerly have to wait for the sushi court to give a "rolling." (Ruling if that was too vague). The rolls are made fresh and many meat-based rolls include a tempura element rolled inside. I could understand if we're asking to deep fry the roll, but just adding a tempura and a drizzled sauce? Ok, hopping off my soapbox. Bottom Line We've been coming to this place on and off for over ten years. It's been at least 2 years since our last visit, and there are some noticeable changes. Portions are smaller; the ramen bowls used to be the size of a food challenge. The restaurant itself is looking older and not quite as cared for, but the flavors remain excellent and the friendly, attentive service is completely unchanged.

Apparently the security cameras weren't functioning as he wouldn't look at the footage. The manager wanted to charge the missing payment to the person who used a charge card for her payment and the group told him that was not acceptable. The dispute went on for 30 minutes and customers at a near by table kept turning around and looking at us. The manager stepped away again and returned shortly with the missing payment saying that he found it under the cash register! There was no true apology, no effort to compensate the group for the embarrassing behavior and accusations. Clearly it was the waitress' mistake and she didn't apologize to the group. This is unacceptable behavior from the manager. Knowing this happened yesterday, I will no longer dine at Akebono. Very poor customer service.

It's the kind of place that quietly becomes your favorite before you've even finished your first dish. ‍ Service That Feels Like Home From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm, enthusiastic "Irrashaimase!" The hostess was exceptionally engaging--personable without being overbearing--and guided us through the sake menu like a seasoned sommelier of umami. Her thoughtful recommendations led us to a beautiful tasting journey featuring three types of sake: * A classic hot sake for comfort, * A crisp cold sake imported from Japan, and * A smooth and unexpected bottle from Vernon, CA (yes, Vernon--who knew?). Although the tall glasses were emblazoned with Orion Beer branding, we stuck to the sake. No regrets. What We Ate -- A Love Letter to Flavor Every dish was visually stunning and bursting with freshness. Here's what we devoured: * Truffle Hamachi Carpaccio: Thin slices of hamachi bathed in a rich truffle soy, topped with microgreens and salmon roe. Silky, aromatic, and sublime. * Shishito Peppers: Perfectly blistered and dusted with spice. A simple dish that delivered big on smoky flavor. * Sake Nigiri & Tobiko Gunkan: The sake (salmon) nigiri was melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and the tobiko gunkan had just the right briny pop. Clean, classic, perfect. * Negihama Roll: Yellowtail and scallion in delicate harmony--refreshing and elegant. * Spicy Tuna Roll: A fiery flavor bomb, dusted generously with shichimi. Spicy but well-balanced. * Jade Roll: Wrapped in seaweed salad and sesame, this one was fresh, crunchy, and full of herbaceous notes. A standout roll. * Cucumber Sunomono: A palate cleanser and a beautiful contrast to the richness of the fish. Light, crunchy, and seasoned just right with sesame. Ambiance Kumi Sushi's atmosphere is refined but intimate--dim lighting, soft jazz playing in the background, and warm wood tones throughout. It's got date-night vibes without trying too hard. Final Verdict Kumi Sushi is everything you want in a neighborhood sushi spot--just elevated. Thoughtful service, stunning presentation, fresh ingredients, and a sake list that deserves its own night. Whether you're a seasoned sushi snob or just looking for a delicious evening out, this place delivers. 11/10 would truffle hamachi myself into oblivion again. Highly recommended.

The chicken karaage was very juicy, and both me and my kid really liked it. We also ordered oysters, salmon sashimi, camila roll, and phoenix roll. Everything tasted very good. The camila roll was a little bit dry, and I think it would be better with a little more sauce. The service was fast and very welcoming. We will definitely come back again.

It was nice that they had some vegan rolls that weren't just avocado rolls. My sister was happy to be able to order at one place with us. I'm not sure when the grand opening was, but the sign was still hanging up when we got there. The Uni pasta was good, but I wish I had it fresh. I think I would have loved it more. The rolls were decent and we had a little bit of variety. I always cautious going towards 29th St. because of the limited parking but was really happy that they had their own parking lot. I was also able to walk down to Pushkin as well. Inside the restaurant there wasn't an abundance of tables. I hope they get busy, because I think they previously took over this restaurant.

There is a designated parking lot across the street, so it's easy to grab a spot and walk over. Just be careful because the parking spots in the lot aren't well marked and it's easiest to just park neatly next to other cars. We like to sit at the bar if there's just two of us, and will grab a table when we have friends. If you want to make sure you have a table, you can make a reservation ahead of time, but we usually don't need to wait too long. Our favorites are the brussel sprouts, karaage chicken, and their nigiri. We also really enjoy the sukiyaki, it's really flavorful and perfect for cooler or rainy weather. We still need to come by for brunch, but we've heard good things. The team here is always friendly, and we've been in enough that some of them recognize us now.
