This is a good place to go for people with varying dietary restrictions because the menu features various broths and types of meat, as well as vegetarian options (although more limited)! I tried the tonkotsu ($16.50) ramen with no add-ons. The broth was very rich and flavorful. It wasn't ridiculously salty but I definitely drank a lot of water. If given the choice between thick or thin noodles I'd always go for thick noodles so I was a little bummed that they only have thin noodles here. The noodles were cooked al dente and had the texture of the thin dried ramen noodle packages you can buy in Asian grocery stores. Love this spot for their innovative and fun drinks! It's always bustling and the workers are super sweet. However, as someone who has grown up with Vietnamese food for a good 23 years I have to say this spot won't provide that level of comfort you are experiencing. Personally, I wasn't happy with the price of the pho but nevertheless the portions weren't bad! If you want that real real - I recommend one of the pho restaurants in Malden or Dorchester - especially the ones with "Pho" in their name. It is always important to support local businesses - even old school. But that is just my two cents!! As for Mecha, thank you for always giving me a fun time with my friends and I. Also! Was looking for a place that stayed open late for dinner after a movie at the Coolidge and Mecha is right across the street and open until 10. Well that's not the only reason to go here - Rye and Shine cocktail was delicious and also beautifully presented with a star anise inside a lime half and a cinnamon stick. The kimchi fried rice was just the right spicy, full of flavor with big chunks of moist chicken and a fried egg with a runny yolk on top. My partner had the KFC and smashburger bao - twice as big as a regular bao and he said both were great. read more

I've been wanting to try this place ... even before it opened and so glad I did. It's a funky, modern little ramen joint in the heart of Coolidge Corner. I love seeing more Asian shops and restaurants coming to this area. So convenient for me!!! The food was actually pretty good. I was afraid that it was going to be too gimmicky, but no ... I really liked it and would go back. What's great about this place is that they have a Happy Hour Menu ... A HAPPY HOUR MENU!!! More restaurants should have this. It really makes eating out more affordable, so you can eat out more. I think this place would be a little pricey for what you get ... if we didn't go during Happy Hour. My BF and I split the Pork Belly Steamed Bao, Sichuan Cucumbers, a pho (I forget which one ... it was the "Bowl of the Day"), and the Spicy Miso. All of those items were very yummy and definitely recommend. My BF also got 2 Sake Bombs. He said that they were both pretty small, so if it hadn't been on the Happy Hour Menu, it would have been grossly overpriced ... compared to other places. A trendy spot serving up pho, ramen, and other goodies! I'm always a little skeptical when a place tries to do multiple cuisines at once, such as Vietnamese pho and Japanese ramen, but this place was pretty solid! The interior is clean and modern, and the service was attentive. I tried the KFC bao which was very yummy and the spicy miso ramen, which was great as well. We tried the seasonal special - coconut shrimp bao (this was a shrimp Patty and not a whole shrimp). This was delicious. For the 2 ramen - would rate 3/5. When I tell you I'm OBSESSED. I'm very rarely a soup person, but the ramen here (especially the spicy beef) is INCREDIBLE. The soup is so flavorful, the noodles are perfect, a good amount of brisket in the dish. The pork belly bao is also amazing, although I didn't love the other ones. I literally wanted to eat this every single day for a week. Came here for the 10 year anniversary, which was very fun. The restaurant had balloons, stickers, decorations, a wheel to get free prizes, and the offer of free t-shirts. The deal was the 1st 100 people at the Brookline location got a free bowl of noodle soup. It was advertised that they would also get a free t-shirt but the staff mentioned they would give the shirts out to the next 100 guests so the first 200 all got something, which seemed fair but wasn't what was advertised. Still, I can't complain about a free bowl of noodle soup. I got the Pho Bo Vien (with rare beef and beef meatballs) and my partner ordered the same but with a Spiked Thai Tea Boba. Pho Bo Vien ($14) - This was quite good. The broth felt authentic and there was no shortage of meat. However, a good amount of my noodles were broken up into small pieces rather than longer strands almost as though the dried noodles had cracked into small clumps before they were cooked. The table comes equipped with both hoisin and sriracha, but the service staff ended up bringing the bean sprouts, lime, and mint probably 10 minutes or so after we got the bowls of soup. They also only brought 1 serving of the veggies for 2 bowls of soup, so it felt like we didn't have a lot veggies per person. The actual pho itself did taste nice, though the $14 felt a little steep for what we got. Spiked Thai Tea Boba ($12) - We didn't actually know this came with boba, so that was a nice surprise. It tasted alright, but I couldn't help thinking that rum may have been a better pairing with the Thai tea. It tasted fine but wasn't anything too special. Nothing to do with the food, but the music was also very loud and it was hard to have a conversation. All in all, this was probably one of the better bowls of Pho in the Brookline area, but the price is slightly high for me and the service issue (late veggies) and noise level were not great. I would give the actual event a 4/4 because it was nice for them to give 100 bowls of free noodle soup and there was a lot of excitement surrounding the 10 year anniversary, but if I had to pay for the meal on any normal day, it earns a 3/5. read more

I first visited MeCha in their Connecticut location and enjoyed the ramen. It wasn't until they opened their Brookline, MA location that I realized that "Me Cha" translated to Mom & Dad and was Vietnamese. I've been here several times now. They have Asian-inspired dishes, such as pho, ramen, and baos. I love the cocktails, because they have Asian ingredients like yuzu and matcha. The vibes are great. I tried their pho for the first time the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. Because I am of Vietnamese descent, I typically do not get Pho at "fusion" places. However, the recipe was good - not like my mom's obviously, but authentic enough. I won't be taking my Vietnamese parents here for the pho, but I will definitely take my non-Asian friends here to give them a slow intro to yummy Asian food and delicious cocktails. read more

I saw that a table of 4 and a table of 2 got their ramens faster than my table of 2 even though we ordered the same thing and our order was taken first. Shoyu paitan broth is so deep and flavorful. Adding chasu was the move for sure as the put 4 large pieces of pork in there! Mushroom dumplings are packed full of flavor. Its a mash of mushrooms rather than individual shrooms so its jammed pack with mushroom flavor. Also Love the brown butter miso sauce. Please drown me in that sauce. *Takeout order review For a long time I have been hoping to try Mecha Noodle Bar because the interior is nice and I love Asian food/noodles. I had a feeling that maybe it isn't the best out there but I decided to give it a chance. I got the spicy miso ramen on Ubereats and got it because it had the thicker yellow noodles. Packaging was great (same as other ramen spots). The highlights of the ramen were the noodles which were perfectly chewy and the pork which was tender and flavorful. Not the biggest fan of woodear mushrooms and there were many but most ramen has them. I wish there was an egg or corn or something else. Broth was surprisingly good! Not the best spicy miso broth I have had (prefer Tora or Isshindo) but I give them credit for having a decent broth. It could be that the miso broth is chicken so it's not as meaty or deep in flavor, or that the miso flavor wasn't super strong. Overall, pretty solid ramen and I am glad I tried it. I am hoping to go to the restaurant sometime and try it because the baos and other snacks look really good. I give this a solid 4 stars. Not the most amazing ramen I have had but for a ramen/noodle place that seems more mainstream than Asian, it is not bad! At first glance, it looks beautifully designed and a cool atmosphere. Then when you get a closer look you realize it's a bunch of 2x4s from the Home Depot aisle. I'll give it to them for creativity with limited resources though. The atmosphere despite the lack of design was probably the best part of the meal. The food was disappointing. Bubble tea: just don't. The tapioca was so soggy and the tea is not worth mentioning KFC bao: I thought it would be more interesting but it was basically a chicken tender with pickled veggies slightly dipped in gochujang. Also the bao breads were cold. Pork belly bao: this one was better, the pork belly was tasty and crispy but a loooot of fat. Tonkatsu ramen: would never get this again. The soup is thick but very one note. The pork flavor is completely overshadowed by the taste of fat which I also confirmed when refrigerating my leftovers. It was about an inch thick for a pint of noodle soup. Also the noodles are skinny which is not my preference. It's also worth noting that every topping is an additional 1-2 dollars and the portions are small. As for service, the staff was nice (hence 2 stars) but they should be trained more. Learn the menu and the POS system. I know it's a new spot so they probably have improvements to make but I probably won't come back again on my own accord. read more

I've been meaning to come to this place once it opened and I finally did! The place is a decent size where there are a good amount of 4 seaters and two seaters, along with bar seats. I really liked how clean it was and it was pretty empty when I went there around lunch time on a weekday, which was surprising. The food was actually pretty good! The bao (I got the KFC and pork belly-- pork belly is a must) was yummy and flavorful. I don't often eat japanese ramen because of the sodium and how salty the soup usually is, BUT the tonkotsu was not too salty and I really liked it. I would recommend asking for chili oil if you like a bit of spice and it tasted so much better! The waitress was also super friendly and the service was efficient. I came as a party of three on a Thursday night around 6:15pm and we were seated right away. They don't take reservations, but it didn't seem like people had to wait too long for a table, despite the restaurant looking full for the most part. Our waitress recommended the Herbed Edamame, which we shared. It was as flavorful as she said and a good snack as we waited for our entrees. For my drink I got the Yuzu Matcha Spiked Fruit Bubble Tea. The matcha felt too heavy-handed but the boba was a good texture. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. I hate to say it because a portion of each bowl of ramen sold goes towards a charity, but I really didn't enjoy my bowl. The broth was extremely heavy and felt too creamy. Maybe I'm just not used to "hakata-style" broth, but it didn't seem like a great introduction. We were also encouraged to get add-ons, which (I admit might've been a lack of common sense on my part but) I didn't realize were $2 extra for each one. It was a little on the sweeter side but not overpowering and used red onions instead of white. They used thinly sliced chicken breast which was tender and not tough compared to chicken pho from other places. The tofu banh mi was good for the first couple of bites but then felt heavy because the tofu itself was fried and the bread was toasted in butter/oil(?). Our lunch outing was really a bao bun tasting, because we couldn't decide on one type....so we ordered four different types! Our table was filled with the pork bun, the shiitake bun, the KFC bun and a seasonal addition, the crispy shrimp bun. We also ordered some boba drinks and a general tso's shrimp. The baos were surprisingly very different than I anticipated. Each order came with two baos so we split everything evenly. First let me start with my favorite, the shrimp bao. I was very surprised as I anticipated pieces of shrimp, but it was more of a shrimp cake. The shrimp also tasted SLIGHTLY fishy, but the more I ate it, the more I was in love with it! The refreshing accompaniments of herbs and the brightness of what I assume was some lemon, was really complimentary to it. I highly suggest trying this, and that the restaurant adds this to the menu officially! Then we moved on to the next few buns that are menus staples. My second favorite was the pork belly bun, as it had good flavor, but the pork itself was 80% fat. Not my ideal cut, but it had great flavor! Next, I enjoyed the shiitake bun, as I am a sucker for mushrooms. Unfortunately, the giant piece of shiitake does not work here. I wish that it was cut up and fried better as I image the flavors would pop a bit more. Some of the shiitake was soggy, so it made for an odd bite. Last, my least favorite was the KFC bun. This one did not work for me because the chicken was SO dense. It was a weird mouthfeel to have this dense thick piece of chicken accompanied with a fluffy bao. If the chicken was as thick as the pork belly, or just smaller it could've been more successful. Last we enjoyed the tsos shrimp, which if you enjoy gochujang this is for you! It had that level of spice (which I was not anticipating, but that was totally my fault) that is mouth watering. This worth trying if you like those flavors! Food I've tried: - SHIITAKE STEAMED BAO (2 pieces - $8): the shiitake is surprisingly flavorful, and tender. The flavors were balanced by the crunchiness and freshness of the cucumber. The surrounding bao was standard. - SPICY BEEF RAMEN ($15): a good balance of spice with the beef flavors of the broth. The fat content of the broth is on the lower side, which I personally like. The tamago was perfectly half poached, and with the egg whites holding onto the marinated soy sauce. As some other reviews have pointed out, the ramen noodles were not traditional ramen noodles, as they were a bit thinner and the consistency was slightly different, yet it was still good. The beef was tender and appropriately fatty. The portion was very reasonable. - They do note that 50 cents of each ramen bowl sold is donated to the community! - I personally did not try their drinks, but I am told it is excellent! Atmosphere: - Very trendy decor. - There is a decent amount of tables, though during popular times it is quite crowded and getting a table may be difficult. - Note that you will not be seated until all members of your party are present. I was craving soup on a cold day and mecha hit the spot! It is a well-decorated bar and dining area with fun decor and personality. The drinks are definitely worth a visit except I would consider not having the hot sake be in a glass beaker because it is hard to pour and I think the sake becomes colder faster. The food was good yet I would have loved for the ramen egg to likely have sat in soy sauce longer and for the yolk to be a bit more jelly and less bright yellow and firm. Also for there to be more vegetables like bok choy, bamboo shoots or spinach in the spicy miso ramen. The appetizers were delightful especially the red oil dumpling and the baos. Overall ok!! Definitely a lot better places you could and should check out. (If there's anything you take away from this review, let it be how dry the ribs were **as seen below**) When we walked in and got seated, and the server asked if we had been to Mecha before, and when we said no, he proceeded to explain what ramen and pho were as if we had never had it before. Made us wait for 25 minutes to order and didn't even notice they did it. The people next to us got seated after us and ordered AND got their Appetizers AND ramen before we even got to order our apps. We started out with a Thai iced tea and a mango lassi. Mango lassi was good, Thai iced tea was kinda mid, the boba had minimal flavor and so did the tea itself, wasn't bad, just not super good. The ribs taste like they just threw Mae ploy sweet chili sauce and some soy sauce and called it sweet and sour.They're kinda mid, a bit dry and a bit tough. I don't like the feeling of dry meat scratching my mouth as I chew. I am writing this sentence as I've been chewing a bite of this rib for the last few minutes. I'm still chewing. My boyfriend was the one who had the mushroom dumplings and they were more like pierogies than traditional dumplings. When I asked him if he liked them this is what he said: "So... for what they were... yes. The mushroom paste on the inside was a bit too pasty, I wish it had more body. The glaze was pretty okay, not a big glaze person. I don't wanna say it's bad, it's just not what I wanted." Ramen and Pho were mid. I honestly forgot everything about them writing this after the fact but they weren't anything memorable.
