Shishangju (formerly Zhang Liang Malatang) -- A Fresh New Look! Located on Harvard Street in Brookline, this newly revamped restaurant offers a rare fusion of Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine -- something you don't come across often in Boston. The space has been refreshed, and the service is friendly and attentive. The biggest strength here? Honestly, it's that there's no extreme highlight or disappointment -- no standout "wow" dishes, but also nothing weird or off-putting. It's a reliable, low-key spot that's perfect when you just want a comforting meal without any drama. Harvard Street's chill hidden gem -- even on weekends, there's usually no long wait. It's like a cozy cafeteria for students and locals alike, welcoming you at your own pace. Special Deals * 10% off for online orders * Grand opening 15% discount has ended

Stopped in for lunch, Excellent lunch special options Extensive menu Order beef , green beans lunch special Came with soup hot and sour or egg drop White or fried rice Appetizer of boneless ribs Hot and sour soup was excellent and abundant of ingredients, nice kick Fried rice nice , moist Beef and green beans dish excellent flavors Now ... the boneless spare ribs were like nothing ever seen at any restaurant for boneless spare ribs. See the picture attached... Awful... ready inedible as tough, difficult to chew, dry, and longer they say... completely dried out... left half on table as inedible I would visit again for excellent lunch specials at reasonable price 13.95. Would be 5 stars but bbq boneless ribs were awful ... maybe chef served wrong item?

Try out this new restaurant with my family last night and was disappointing. The staff were friendly but the food was not fresh, dry and stale. The pork dish was dry and looks like it's been sitting out for days. Vegetables old and discolored. Chicken dish was dry and no flavor. The crawfish was okay. The worst part was the bowl of rice that came out loop warm and crumble together. How do you mess up rice in a Chinese restaurant. We sent the rice back and all the cook did was steamed our old rice and send it back to our table. This is only at 8 pm in the evening and the kitchen cannot make a fresh batch of white rice, it's a Chinese restaurant, hello. I used to work at a Chinese and upscale restaurant many years old, and was told we never sent out food if we didn't eat ourselves. Their cooks needs culinary skills. The restaurant is clean and service was good, but the food and taste is not there.

    "New dishes menu"

This is a new Sichuan and Cantonese Chinese restaurant that we by chance came upon while walking on Harvard street. It just opened a couple of months ago. The "new dishes" menu has items that we had not previously encountered such as "stir fried pork aorta". We stayed with dishes more familiar to us, sesame chicken and Kung Pao chicken. They were delicious. Fresh broccoli. Not greasy. Really generous servings. It is comfortable (booths are not cramped) and nicely lighted. The servers are really friendly; they came back to check several times after we were served. We arrived shortly before 7 PM on Saturday evening and it was empty. But the restaurant half filled while we were eating. This is a really nice reasonably priced "sit in" restaurant (you can also take out) and a welcome addition to the Brookline restaurant scene!

The staff was incredibly friendly, and I think I only waited 5 minutes from when I ordered to when the food was ready to take away, so that's pretty amazing! I ordered: Lunch special ($11.45) - The price alone here is incredible. You get a good variety of food and a good amount as well for what feels like pre-pandemic prices. I've seen a lot of lunch specials being raised to more than $15 or so recently, so the fact that this one is only $11.45 is a great deal. It also came in a tupperware with a big section and a small section, and I would have expected the rice to go in the big section and the main to go in the smaller one, but they did the opposite - so you get a really large and nice portion of your main course! The actual food I got was: Crab rangoons - These were nicely fried and the filling had noticeable pieces of imitation crab in it. I also liked the savory flavor, as some places make their filling sweeter, but this was more on the savory and salty side. Very nice crab rangoon. Pork fried rice - This was the iffy one. The flavor was on point, but the rice itself was hard and felt undercooked. It wasn't inedible, but it was definitely noticeable, though covering it in the lobster sauce made up for it. If I had ordered the fried rice alone without a sauce, I would have been pretty disappointed. Shrimp with lobster sauce - This came with 4 shrimps which is pretty standard, but it was an above average lobster sauce in my opinion. It was nice and gooey, salty, and savory, and the shrimp was very meaty. This was definitely the star of the lunch, and I had some leftover to eat with white rice for my next meal! All in all, I'd definitely come back - the price along is a great deal, and I'd like to see if the fried rice would be better on a second time around. The appetizer and main were great tasting, and the service was incredibly fast and friendly. 4/5 stars - I'd absolutely have this again!

Each of the times I remembered were tasty. The ambiance when you arrive is dramatic Chinese music in the background which makes it somewhat difficult to converse with your group. Most recently we arrived with a group of 8 for our 7:30 pm reservation without any issues. All the other tables were full but we noticed the restaurant cleared out after an hour of us being there past the peak hours. They gave us 2 containers of the standalone spicy powder so people could add on as they wanted and the less spice tolerant in our group weren't saddled with the consequences. I tried the following dishes: Lamb & Beef Kebabs - 3 sticks per order I preferred the beef texture and taste over the lamb. BBQ Lamb Ribs - they said this was the only dish that came default spicy but I didn't think it was that spicy. the smoking in the raised wooden container gave it additional flavor. I preferred lamb ribs over the kebabs. Torched Beef - one of the favorites for our table the sauce with it was also super tasty. Big Squid - challenging to cut but they give a lot of pieces and generous portion with a special sauce. Grandma's juicy pork buns - on the small side, topped with black sesame and sauce you can add on the side. it was juicy as advertised. Cucumber salad - refreshing and included peanuts for texture and flavor. Fried tofu - not too memorable but the fried texture was tasty. Bok choy - I enjoyed the sauce spread across this veggie dish. Shiitake & King Oyster Mushroom - these are 2 separate orders but I can't remember which was the skewer and which was on a regular plate. Both were overall tasty. Cauliflower - Another solid veggie option but nothing too memorable if you want to focus mainly on protein. BBQ Bread slice - one of the inauthentic cuisines and it's like French toast Kaoijiu dragon yogurt- I was expecting more dragon fruit flavor so that was a bit disappointing but it still tasted good overall. I am not sure it's worth the $10 dessert price. Overall solid food options and we didn't have any leftovers so it ended up being ~$40-60 per person depending if people also ordered drink/dessert. Worth checking out if you haven't had a chance to before they are gone forever!

Really exciting place focused on Northwest Chinese cuisine…read more The signature dish, the hand-pulled beef noodle soup, had a fairly light, but subtle, flavor. The noodles themselves I wish were chewier (got the 'flat' but probably should have gone for 'extra wide'), and perhaps it'd been nice to have some different textures inside the soup (e.g. something crunchy). The scallions in the soup were also too wide, and needed to be sliced more thinly. The beef pancake was quite decent, though the edges didn't have enough beef and the middles had too much beef. The beef was tender, though I might have liked it more flaky. The sauce inside the pancake was somewhat unevenly applied, and a bit too sweet. I wonder if a dipping sauce (maybe a vinegar?) would have helped. The blueberry with mashed yams was fascinating. It was listed under appetizers, and wondered why the dish came out last. But the dish was a bit sweet (naturally!) and so it actually worked as a light modest dessert! The wait staff was spot on after all in putting out the dish last. The stir-fried cabbage dish was beautiful! It was appropriately crunch, yet using good wok hey. The salt level was a bit high, but the spice level was good. Their spice ratings were a bit timid to what I encounter in Szechuan restaurants (the 'regular' level seemed to be more 'mild-regular'). The stir-fried cumin potato was delicious; nicely flavored, nicely charred. Some bits were a bit oily but the cook on the potato was really neat. Will revisit!!!

We've ordered several of their noodle soups and noodle dishes with regular, thick, and wide noodles that have been fine but not great. I think the textures of their noodles across the board have been too soft, not chewy enough. We've tried some of their other dishes, which have been better: my fav is the cold okra appetizer. Also, the potato balls in the beef brisket with potato are a sleeper hit. Unfortunately, the dish was mostly beef and not potato haha unusual gripe. Service is normal, efficient, on the attentive side for a chinese place. Interior is nice and new and clean. After our second try, I'm not super pressed to come back, but if we're in the area, I might try some of their other non-noodle dishes!

Starting with an iPad menu, our ordering experience with our waiter was subpar. We ended up with extra things ordered that weren't part of our initial order. In good news the food was absolutely delicious. Everything was fire and the waiter poured 5 glasses of water for 3 of us. So we could cool down without needing to flag him down. With the only non-Asian waiter in the restaurant, he struggled with basic elements of service. Inattentive. Requests went unmet (lemons for water). We sat for more than 15 mins after asking to box up leftovers and to close our check. This was all a little embarrassing, as we brought my boyfriend's father. After singing praises of the NYC spot, this was a disappointment.

Our favorites were the eggplant with spicy garlic sauce, with the chengdu dry hot chicken and the string beans. The braised beef with Napa cabbage and mapo tofu were also delicious. Ambience 3/5: super loud. It wasn't even the music, it was that people's conversations were bouncing off the walls in a small space such that it was not possible to hear the other people in my group except who I was sitting next to. I saw several dates there and hopefully they could hear each other ok. Drinks: 2/5 overpriced and disappointing. My Negroni was ok but my husband's Manhattan tasted watery like it had been shaken instead of stirred and the melon highball tastes medicine-y.
