Although I'm not a huge fan of brunch, Medina just hits different. The portions are perfect and wonderfully flavored. You can't really go wrong on the drinks. We got the paella and the Les Boulettes. The service is great despite how busy they are at all times. However, if you know your order before you go in, that's best as it can take a bit for your food to come out if you order after the rush. The kitchen is a bit small compared to the size of the restaurant. The restaurant is designed beautifully as well. All in all, a 10/10! read more

We were initially told the wait would be 45 minutes, but luckily we grabbed seats at the bar and were seated in just 15--pleasant surprise! While waiting, I spotted a display of waffles that looked like a house specialty. After placing our breakfast orders, we decided to add the waffle with the sauce--and I'm so glad we did. It's a must-try when dining here! The food was clearly made from scratch--fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. We absolutely loved both the taste and the presentation. Solid brunch/ lunch spot in downtown Vancouver. The staff was friendly upon arrival. There was a 30 min. wait on a rainy Monday afternoon. I'd imagine a longer wait time on weekends for sure. 4/5: Cassoulet was delicious in flavors and textures. The focaccia was nicely toasted and worked well to soak up everything on the plate. Medina bacon was more of a thick pork belly slice rather than a thin slice of usual bacon one would imagine, but it was smokily tender. The 2 sunny eggs were cooked right and paired well with the sausages. I do have to say the London fog with oat milk was the most memorable. I'd order this again hands down. Medina Cafe is a Michelin recommended brunch spot in the heart of downtown Vancouver. They have mediterranean brunch cuisines which are so good! They don't take reservations, you have to physically go there to put your name on the waitlist. We went there on Sunday morning with a group of 7 and the wait was around 1.5hrs (totally worth it). For drinks, I tried their lavender latte which was huge and very milky with a slight taste of lavender. My friends really liked it but I thought it could've used more lavender in there. Their salted caramel latte was also pretty nice. For food, my favourite was their Les Boulettes which came with 2 Poached Eggs, Spicy Moroccan Lamb Meatballs, Roasted Peppers, Black Olive & Tomato Stew, Raita, Grilled Focaccia. I loved it so much!!! The meatballs were so flavourful and the tomoto stew really added to it. I should mention that they don't have a lot of vegetarian options, they do make some things from their menu vegetarian like their harissa burger. My friend who is vegetarian got this but was very impressed by it, it was mostly raw veggies with not a lot of flavour. Last but not the least, their waffles!! You can order individual waffles with seperate dipping sauces. We got their milk chocolate lavendar, white chocolate, and salted caramel dipping sauces. All three of the sauces were delicious and their soft fresh waffles went really went well with them. Look, all I'm saying is if you're technically having breakfast with Owen Wilson (because he's sitting 2 tables away) then you've clearly chosen the right place to have breakfast. My wife and I visited Medina on the morning of our last day visiting Vancouver. It was around the corner from our hotel and the menu looked promising. We cursed ourselves for not doing the "reservation by donation" option when we showed up early enough on a Saturday morning when we discovered a crowd and an up to 45 minutes wait. (The only way they take reservations is if you make a donation to a charity via their website.) No matter, we had time and got ourselves on the list. The wait wasn't too long and the host was very attentive to the waiting area so we didn't feel lost or ignored in the crowd. She also, after being seated and noticing our server had some delaying complications at another table, came over without being prompted and stepped in to take our order. We felt really well taken care of. Everything we had was fantastic. The Tea Sparrow English Breakfast tea service was spot on for my wife. The coffee was on point...excellent even. (Sadly, never a guarantee at breakfast restaurants...they got it right here...as strong as it needed to be.) We both ordered single "liege waffles"...Belgian style waffles just don't get better than what we were brought...they're inexpensive too...though they can go up quite about with the available add ons which are plentiful...I opted for maple syrup (when in Canada...) and butter (when having waffles...) I really loved it and could see myself gorging myself into a waffle stuper eating liege waffle after leige waffle. Thankfully I had a cruise ship to get on so we avoided that crisis over over-waffleization. (But I could easily fly back for more!) We also loved the Roasted Potatoes, Smoked Cheddar with Lemon Aioli. The potatoes couldn't have been more perfectly cooked and were an indulgent delight with the smoked cheddar they were mixed with. (The aioli came on the side which is good as I'm not a big fan of mayonnaise of any kind.) Considering the volume of available and delicious looking vegetarian options on the menu, it's a miracle we got out after only waffles and potatoes...but, Harissa Burger (vegetarian option available), Paella, egg dishes and couscous...plus the fantastic coffee and thoughtful drinks of every kind...plus the really well done design and atmosphere of this place...it's no wonder it's Owen Wilson's choice for brunch...it definitely would be ours over and over if we lived in Vancouver. read more

The tagine is so good it has me reconsidering all my life choices -- why don't I eat delightfully spiced beans, tomatoes and onion with merguez sausage and beautifully poached eggs for breakfast more often, for starters? Truly exquisite and balanced and not too heavy given how hearty ingredients are either -- the grilled focaccia helps make sure you don't miss a drop of the deliciousness and you can still walk out without being a in a food coma haze afterward, even if you finish the whole dang plate :) The side of raita it comes with is lovely too, I wish I'd tried it sooner and mixed it into my breakfast. The espresso in the iced Americano was life-giving and so good I ordered a second one -- was nice to have one to go while we waited for seat, which didn't take that long (15-20 mins) all things considered for a Sunday morning at peak breakfast hours (9:30-10). First of all, if you want to get a seat, make sure you are there before they open in the morning! Fortunately we were the last party to be seated as they opened for the day. We ordered a couple of different dishes and they were all great. Probably the highlight of the meal was the waffle, which we ordered berry compote and maple syrup to dip them in. I would skip the berry and go with the syrup, it by far goes the best. I ordered the Cassoulet and really enjoyed the meats and the focaccia that comes with it was perfect for sopping up the sauce. The short ribs in the Fricassee were ok. The first bite I got to try was juicy and tasty, but the second I had later as I finished what my nephew didn't eat, was kind of dry. So not sure it if was just sitting, or what. Overall, the service was friendly and prompt and the overall feel and vibe of the place was as you would expect. OH, and the coffee, that will put hair on even a babies chest. While not complaining, just a mention. If you don't like strong coffee, you might want to order a crafted coffee or something else. I was traveling for work and by myself so I was able to be seated at the bar right away. Bar seats are not come first come, first serve and seats are treated like table seating (assigned). The energy here is buzzing and loud and super fun. Within about 5 minutes of being seated every table and every single bar seat was full. There were about 15 people in the waiting area at any given time waiting to be seated as well. Despite how busy it was, the service was nothing but friendly and super efficient. Many of the menu items are naturally gluten-free* but they also have gluten-free bread to swap in for toast/buns. I enjoyed the frittata of the day and it was great! Get ready for a long wait. I unfortunately was not prepared for how long it would take for us to both get seated and get our food, and I got hangry. I will say the brunch selection is pretty unique though. I've never seen breakfast versions of paella, meatballs, or tagine, so for that reason and those dishes, I'd still come back. My Tagine dish was tasty and hearty but not heavy. I enjoyed the combination of spiced merguez sausage with the poached eggs and tomato. I would've liked if they gave two slices of focaccia instead of just one to soak up the spicy tomato stew, but I took one from my boyfriend's Le Complet, which was just okay. The flatiron steak was overcooked, as it was more well done instead of medium-rare. The Liege style waffle was good but not worth the hype. My friend and I first tried to come on a Saturday morning - they were really busy and quoted us around an hour's wait, so we came back on Monday. Fortunately we were able to get seated immediately (around 9h30am ish?) but it was still very busy, so be ready to queue a bit. Their speciality seems to be their Belgian waffles, so of course I had to try that. I ordered two with the mixed berry compote, greek yoghurt, and maple syrup. It was quite good, I enjoyed it overall, but I didn't really feel like it would have been worth waiting an hour+ for? In fact, the waffle itself was actually on the blander side. The berry compote was yummy, albeit a bit more sour than expected. I did love the maple syrup, though, which was SO yummy (and thankfully not too sweet in a sickly/overpowering way). Overall not bad, and also not too pricey either. My friend also ordered an avocado toast, which was pretty good too. There was such a generous serving of avocado (in this economy!) and the focaccia toast was interesting because of how flat it was (physically) which made the overall texture rather unique. All in all also a good dish. Good experience but I don't think I would have queued for this. Waited about 35 minutes to get a table for 3 a bit after lunch time on a weekday, so wait times appear to be consistently long. Once getting seated, it was quite loud inside but the interior looked very modern. Our waitress was extremely nice and checked in with us multiple times throughout our meal. Le Complet 2/5 - I was a bit disappointed in what I received. First the flatiron steak was small in portion & not very tasteful. Second the greens did not taste like there was any sort of dressing, instead it felt like it was straight from the bag. Lastly the menu claims to have caramelized onion, but it was missing from my plate. Waffles 4/5 - I got the Milk Chocolate Lavender and White Chocolate Pistachio Rosewater toppings. The waffle itself was small but was soft and tasteful. The Milk Chocolate Lavender was good, but the lavender taste was overpowering to where I couldn't taste the chocolate much. The White Chocolate Pistachio Rosewater was amazing, nothing was too powerful and everything was balanced. I found myself gravitating towards this way more often than the other topping I ordered. I'd had this spot bookmarked for MONTHS and finally pulled the trigger during our most recent trip - totally and absolutely did not disappoint! I did not mind this fee at all and was happy to donate to a good cause while snatching up a coveted table at this spot. If you don't want to do this, you can walk in but just be ready for a wait, esp with larger parties. We were seated for our reservation right on time and dove right into ordering. Frankly, a ton of the menu looked amazing, but I knew we had to get a liege waffle to end the meal or I would leave a bit sad. We both grabbed a latte, salted caramel and vanilla, and enjoyed them immensely. I got the tagine (Vegetarian) and my husband got the harissa "burger" (non-veg). I can tell you I absolutely loved my dish and it absolutely hit the spot when I got everything in one perfect bite. My husband oved his harissa "burger" which was essentially spiced beef smashed into the confines of a grilled pita. Looked delicious! And I did steal some baba ganoush from the side that was great. We also shared the roasted potatoes which were good. And last but not least, we got a waffle with mixed berry compote to share. It was the perfect little sweet treat to finish the meal and left us feeling happy and content. Service was incredibly sweet and attentive and prices are very fair for current costs and the quality you're getting here. I went here with a friend on a Friday 8:30am and we were seated immediately. It's crazy that the place is already so busy this early in the morning. Happy hour is 9-11am which is interesting because that entices you to have a boozy brunch which I did (because cocktails are way cheaper here than in the states)! We got their famous Liege style waffles and added milk chocolate lavender sauce and white chocolate pistachio rosewater. We also got the Fricassée which is a short rib with sunny side eggs, like a shakshouka. The waffles are lightly buttery and slightly sweet, and the sauces we ordered had a nice delicate floral flavor which stands out compared to overly sweet chocolate syrup. The short rib is decently tender, but a miss of the dish is that it was too tangy, from the tomato. Otherwise, it was fairly filling and the eggs are cooked perfectly over easy. I personally got 2 cocktails - the Mimouna No. 1 cocktail and the Partea one, both of which are delicious and well worth the discounted happy hour price of 9CAD each. The Mimouna is an elegant form of mimosa with some saffron, and the Partea one is very floral and refreshing. Both are quite strong so 2 was good for me. Service is excellent as they refilled water and it was easy to flag down a server, who fulfilled our requests quickly. As one of the most highly rated brunch spots on Vancouver, I had to make a stop to try Medina Cafe on my trip to Vancouver. And lemme tell ya; it did NOT disappoint. I arrived on a Saturday morning just before 10 am and had a 15 minute wait for a seat at the bar. The table wait was much longer and the place was already completely packed with a good amount of people waiting outside. It's safe to say that you'll probably be waiting for table unless you arrive at the crack of dawn. But be patient because it's truly worth the wait. When I was finally seated, I embraced the comfortable and energetic environment. The seating layout kind of reminds me of a large cafeteria. It's very open and airy but not crowded. Simple modern decor with sky high ceilings. A very sociable and lively atmosphere filled with people who seem to be having a fun time enjoying their meals and company. The bar area was super fun. Not your typical bar scene, but more like a counter space. The servers at the bar are so fun and very attentive. Their menu has a Mediterranean influence to it with lots of inspired dishes. After perusing the menu, I decided to order the Le Complet, a liege waffle with white chocolate pistachio dipping, and a London Fog. I mean... you can't come to Canada and NOT get a London Fog or a liege waffle. Both were simply delicious here! The London Fog was mildly sweet, enjoyably frothy, and soothing. I love tea but I've never really enjoyed London Fog tea in the states. It's true that it tastes waaay better here. The liege waffle was like an early dessert that I probably didn't even deserve. The waffle was so soft and moist that it literally felt like it was melting in my mouth. That, plus the white chocolate pistachio dipping sauce just took things to a whole new level. I'd be completely happy only having these kinds of waffles for the rest of my days. Let's not forget about the main event; the Le Complet. Wowza! I usually save my red meat for dinner time, but I would have this steak again for breakfast and brunch in a heartbeat! The Le Complet is a delicious plate of sliced flat iron steak with 2 sunny side up eggs, organic green salad, roasted red pepper chèvre focaccia, and Romesco sauce. Not your typical breakfast plate but that's what makes it so special. The steak was prepared perfectly and was super juicy. The Romesco sauce gave it a nice peppery taste and a mild kick. Oh em gee... that focaccia bread!!! It was so damn good! The roasted red pepper flavor was dynamite. It was also really soft with a nice crispy edge. I mean, this entire meal was fantastic. As I sat at the bar, I chatted with a few of the other patrons at the bar. Two ladies that I met were visiting from Seattle and said that they come out to Vancouver often for day trips and love coming to Medina Cafe for breakfast and lunch. I can totally see why; this place is fabulous! Also cannot forget to mention that excellent service! Everyone from the hostess to the servers were wonderful and friendly. My first pick for brunch in the city ended up being Cafe Medina, since I was curious about them being featured in Michelin guide. All in all, pretty good brunch place if you are into Mediterranean foods as the menu are somewhat more unique vs regular brunch cafes. Also, they have my favourite liege waffle so far in Vancouver. Harissa 'Burger' ($19) 7.5/10 Burger with a middle eastern twist, where bun was replaced by pita with harissa minced beef inside, topped with 2 sunny side up, grada padano cheese, and salad greens. Love their hummus and salsa but pita was a bit dry. Pretty enjoyable dish as I am a fan of these types of cuisines in general. Tagine ($21) 7/10 Quite a hearty and filling dish. The Moroccan influence was definitely there in terms of strong spices and bold flavour of the tomato based stew. Sausage had a strong peppery notes, overall the dish was mildly spicy but I'd say still safe for most people. They gave you cream cheese as part of the item to cut through the heat. Liege Waffle ($4.2) 8.5/10 Despite being known for brunch place, my favourite item to get here is actually their waffle. Slightly crispy and chewy with nice crystallised sugar inside. Came here on a weekend for brunch and we were so worried that there was not going to be seating because it was PACKED. Fortunately, there was bar seating so we just got that (table seating would have been an hour wait). Inside the restaurant, it was very loud and the tables are packed fairly tight together so be warned. However, the ceilings are high and it's very bright, making it seem very lively. My boyfriend and I got a couple of plates to share and everything was so good. We took our time to eat and enjoy everything because it was so delicious, you just had to savor the food. If I had to recommend something though is to ask the server to bring out the waffles towards the end of your meal if you want to save it as a "brunch dessert" because if it's left out for too long it gets a bit soft. Maybe we went on an off day or maybe we didn't order the right items but majority of the things we got was a let down. The stone fired bread with hummus was rock solid, the potatoes were dry and the veg skillet was the most disappointing salty dish. The saving grace was coffee and waffles. Not sure how this place got on the Michelin guide. Service was friendly. read more
