I was genuinely blown away by the difference. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome. I had the Alfredo and the rigatoni, and both were solid. The pizza wasn't my favorite part of the meal, but the bread with the dipping oil and the rest of the food more than made up for it. They also have filtered regular water and filtered soda water, which I definitely appreciate. Somehow that small detail always tells me a place cares. The next time I'm back in Monterey, I'll definitely stop here again. Also, just a heads-up I had a better time here, made better memories, and still spent less than I did at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. At least here, the food was actually worth looking at.

We used to drive to SJ/ SF area just to get borsch or piroshki, and now we can order all this from Sofia's. For our first time, we ordered lamb rice pilaf for 6 people, vinaigrette salad and sweet strawberry cream cheese pie. It was a real feast! Not only it was yummy (the lamb was melting in the mouth and the pie was better than the ones I tried from the local bakeries), the portions were huge, so we still have some pilaf left in our freezer. The communication was very easy and we even requested the pie off the menu. Our friends and family really liked the food (even though they never tried Russian dishes before). I highly recommend this if you want to try good quality Russian food. It also a great service for big parties, holidays or as an easy meal prep if you are enable to cook/ have children .

I might even say that Mama Sofia's food surpasses some of the food we've had in restaurants. We picked up from their home in a quaint neighborhood - it took a minute to wait for the food to be packed up to take home, but it was worth the wait, as most of it was still warm from just being prepared. A couple recommendations on what to get: eggplant/tahini dip, borscht (perfect flavoring and ratio of beets/cabbage to soup), blinchiki (beef, chicken), pastry with cream cheese and strawberry jam (but make sure you have people to share this with!)

We were seated directly next to the kitchen where the grill was located. Throughout our meal, embers and ash from the grill were constantly blowing onto our table. Our drinks, table setting, and surrounding area were covered with ash particles. I have allergies, and the smoke and ash caused me to become severely congested. I politely explained the situation and asked if we could be moved to another table because of my allergies, but my request was denied. Once my allergies flared up, I completely lost my sense of taste. After the first bite, I couldn't taste any of my food or even my drink, which made the entire dining experience a waste for me. It was especially upsetting because this was supposed to be a special birthday dinner for my husband, and he was also disappointed with where we were seated along with how his steak came out. I expected much better customer service and accommodation from a Michelin-star restaurant. A simple table change could have made all the difference. Unfortunately, what should have been a memorable celebration turned into a very disappointing and expensive experience. Definitely won't be coming back.

They were kind enough to sneak a couple onto the grill for us, which was an amazing gesture. The hot dogs were absolutely delicious, served on a high-quality bun shipped directly from the East Coast (the same ones they use for their Philly cheesesteaks). It was a fantastic, flavorful surprise. As you can see from the photo, my wife thoroughly enjoyed diving right into that massive foot-long! The service was top-notch, the food was spectacular (such great quality and flavor), and they truly care about their customers. We will absolutely be returning and highly recommend this spot to anyone in the Seaside area! Thank so much, its really a pleasure to find a crew that love their trade !

3.5 STARS HELLO,…read moreMEAT SWEATS! Escaping the 4th of July warzone in The City, we headed to Carmel for a quiet staycation. The Carmel food scene tends to be mid and overpriced so I was in search of more affordable, local gems in Seaside and Marina areas. And...TikTok brought me to The Meatery, a boutique butcher shop and eatery. BUTCHER SHOP Array of ethically sourced meats - amazing looking marbled steaks, pork, veal, and handcrafted sausages (Mmm, blood sausage and fermented garlic sausage!). They also have house-made sauces and spice blends, condiments, compound butters, duck fat, and more. There's even fresh dog food (e.g. beef sirloin, brown rice, and blueberries) which I bought for my dogs. EATERY Made-to-order sandwiches and BBQ (brisket, pulled pork, ribs, etc) in the hot case. House-made sides (potato salad, mac salad, and kimchi) are available in the cold case. Bottled drinks including beer available. You can order ahead online but we ordered in-person. Note: Check Toast for the most up-to-date prices; the online menu has the old prices. There's about 6 tables for dine-in. Self-serve water. Bus your own tables when finished. F O O D * 18 Hour Smoked Brisket Sandwich ($18): https://tinyurl.com/rceamucw - Requested mix of wet/moist and lean brisket A signature item, the brisket sandwich was sorely disappointing. While I enjoyed the fresh, soft bun, tangy cola-cola bbq sauce, and acidic pickled onions, the lean brisket was very dry and tough (at opening time). * Calamari Steak Po'Boy Sandwich ($18): https://tinyurl.com/yn7zsvz6 The unique coastal twist on a New Orleans classic sounded promising on paper. The sesame roll was light and fluffy, and the slaw had a delicious creamy tang. Unfortunately, the thin, fried calamari steak was dry and chewy, while the heavily salted breadcrumbs overwhelmed its delicate flavor. * Dino Beef Rib ($21.50/lb): https://tinyurl.com/j8dsxnvc Eyeing this on another table, we decided to order it after trying the sandwiches. Def the highlight of our meal - the beef rib was rich, tender, and deeply savory. Not overly fatty with a crispy bark. Light on the seasoning and smoke so the tangy BBQ sauce came through for a boost of flavor. * Wedge Fries ($8) Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the wedges were dusted with their house seasoning mix (savory w/ a touch of smoky flavor) and served with a side of their fermented chipotle ketchup. * Kimchi Cucumber ($7.50) A blend of napa cabbage and thinly sliced cucumbers, the kimchi was mild and tangy. The perfect acidic in-between bites. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly service. Food came out fast. Overall, maybe we visited on an off day for the eatery. I can see why The Meatery is a local fav for their butcher shop tho. I mean, if I lived nearby, I would be all over 'em sausages! P.S - 3.5 stars rounded up for a small business.

You can tell they really care about their customers and their food. The menu had so many amazing sounding options that we couldn't decide... so we didn't, we ordered three different pizzas and I'm so glad we did! Every single one was fantastic. The Sophia was a dream if you love white sauce pizza -- creamy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced without being too heavy. The Golden State was one of the most unique pizzas I've had in the best way possible. Every bite had something interesting going on and who knew pizza and potatoes just work so well together. But the absolute star for me was the special "La Bomba." WOW. The Calabrian chili gave it the perfect kick and depth of flavor. It was bold, a little spicy, and completely addictive. I would honestly come back time and time again just for that pizza alone. They have a unique crust was perfectly cooked crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside -- and you can tell they use high quality ingredients. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully put together, not just thrown on a pie. The place itself has a great vibe, good service, and the staff makes the whole experience feel welcoming and fun. Whether you're dining in with friends or grabbing a pizza to go, this place checks every box: great service, creative menu, amazing flavor, and pizza you'll be thinking about long after you leave.
