I stumbled upon Medium Rare and got my reservation. The place was "packed" when I got there but the service and food both exceeded my expectations. Great service and very attentive servers. We did a takeout on a Monday evening supper time. The food was ready fairly quickly and that's where everything good stops about it. I'm unsure how and why food tasted so cold in such a short amount of time. I am suspecting putting cold key lime pies right between the fries and the steak did no justice during transit. The steak was hard and chewy despite ordering them rare and medium rare. The fries were salty, stale, and soggy. The salads were small and nothing to write home about. The two $11.00 key lime pies we ordered were small and nothing really special. I think I'll be okay with not getting takeout from them again. The drinks are "bottomless" but they didn't come back around too often to ask about refills, but both the mimosa and screwdriver were good. There are just a handful of brunch options. Each entree you can order a yogurt, fruit salad, or salad. The salad was super fresh and tasty. I had the eggs Benedict with steak which is far from traditional. The steak was like stew beef in a gravy and was not enjoyable, and the secret Hollandaise was really thin. The steak frites were good. Just left this restaurant. Unfortunately, service was lacking and borderline unprofessional. Server was unattentive, took us forever to get our meal (and second portion...which was barely a portion). We had to clear our own plates out of the way when courses did come. And we had to ask for utensils. Not being petty...just giving examples of how to have better service. Server didn't even know what a "cosmo with Titos" drink was and just brought a Tito's on the rocks because they were "out of cosmo vodka". What??? And a woman who appeared to be the manager tonight just spent most of her time checking on one large table and making sure they had everything they needed including large second portions. Heard the brunch was good here so decided to try it--it wasn't bad! ... Everything we ordered was just too salty and over-seasoned. We had the Benedict from the brunch menu and the steak from the dinner menu. The Benedict was good, except the bread was a bit burnt. Also, it was way too salty. The steak--we ordered it rare--came out perfectly cooked, and was good with the sauce and the fries at least for the first few bites. Again, all of it was too salty. I want to say the fries were less seasoned than everything else--I used it to help relieve the burning sensation from saltiness of the steak and sauce. The bread was probably the best part of the whole meal. It was warm and had the perfect crunch in the crust and the middle was soft and airy. The butter paired well with it. Fruit salad was standard, if I had to pay for it separately I wouldn't recommend. I do recommend it over the yogurt parfait though! The yogurt was a little watery and the granola lacked crunch. If you prefer Greek yogurt like me, I would choose the mixed greens or fruit salad. The mixed green salad was pretty fresh, but the dressing was overpowering (surprise surprise). I am ... being generous with my rating. We came here for Mother's Day -- which of course was quite an event with reservations out the yin yang. Nevertheless, they somehow haven't learned from their prior reviews that days like this get really backed up and so we ended up waiting over 30 minutes past our reservation time before we could get seated. Once at the table, the waiter quickly took our drink orders! Great, right? No, for some reason he decided for a party of seven that he could remember them. Guess what, he took our drink orders twice. The second time writing them down: Waters all around, some orange juices, a mimosa, a tea, diet coke, and a cappuccino. Some considerable time later, the drinks started to trickle out. First the mimosa. Then a few minutes. Then four glasses of orange juice. But wait, we only ordered three. Oh well so much for that iced tea. Aha, there's the diet coke. And much, much later ... my cappuccino. Did it come with sugar? No. So I asked for it. A substantial time later, they arrived with another diet coke. Uh. Sure? I guess we'll take that? And a few minutes later several kinds of sugar scattered across a small plate. No spoon. That's fine I'll use my fork to stir the now-lukewarm coffee. We ordered food. This was an event in an of itself. Primarily because we couldn't hear the waiter and the waiter couldn't hear us. Between the relatively loud music and the absolutely packed restaurant with noise-reflecting surfaces ... audio basically didn't work unless you were screaming. Especially funny when my wife asked for hollandaise on her eggs. Turns out the waiter had never heard of it. Nevermind that it's on the menu. Eventually the food came out. Since nobody could hear what anyone else was saying there was a lot of juggling to get the right food to the right people. If you've worked in a restaurant, I assure you each seat had a number - the waiter always took orders from seat 1 onwards ... but that didn't seem to translate when the food came out. The food itself? Mediocre. My wife's was surprisingly salty, apparently. I asked my daughter how her benedict was ... "just okay" ... though my father got the same thing and felt like it had a texture like liver and didn't seem to have much in the way of promised portobello. My steak, which I ordered medium rare (why wouldn't you when it's the restaurant's name) came out small, thin, and well done. And clearly I don't mean it was done well. Did we get refills on drinks during this time? Inconsistently. Someone did show up with a carafe of orange juice at one point. Quite eager to get out of there I asked for the check. I got an affirmative nod. My wife then asked for the water we'd ordered at the start of the meal since we hadn't gotten any and nobody else had gotten any refills on drinks. Good experience for the price point. I went to Medium Rare for brunch on a nice Saturday early afternoon. We were seated right at the beginning of our reservation time which is always a plus. I enjoyed the vibes and decor - open face brick walls and an open kitchen are always winners in my book. They have bottomless mimosas and entree/appetizer for $28. They started us off with bread, then brought out our choice of fruit parfait or garden salad, followed by our steak entrees. The bread was warm and fluffy but I'm not a fan of fruit or salad so I passed on that option (my friends said both options were good though. The entree was really tasty, but a little on the small portion size. I ordered the steak frites and fries - my steak was cooked well, the fries were solid, but the real star of the show was the sauce. The accompanying brown steak sauce was savory and delicious - perfect for dipping both the steak and fries. I wish I had more steak or fries on my plate; I ended up leaving a little hungry. My friend recently posted pictures from Medium Rare which intrigued me into going. I usually read up on restaurants before I take my first trip, somehow I didn't for Medium Rare. Imagine a nice sized restaurant in one of the highest rent districts in the entire DMV and the menu only has ONE MEAL to choose from. Then imagine my surprise when my friend (Katrina L) didn't tell me this before I came.. Lol!! LUCKILY I LOVE steak and fries, good thing, because that's all you getting. Oh yes, you'll get bread and a salad, that's it! The chef has to be the happiest man alive in the chefs business. All he needs to know is, how do you like your steak...lol! They do have several dessert options however, I generally don't order dessert. The service was excellent! They probably enjoyed the deafening music; us not so much. As a result of the crowds, our service was a bit of a mess-- food coming out of order (mushroom appetizers arrived with desserts), long pauses between courses, promised water/bread/coffee refills MIA. Worst was the second service of "medium rare" steak which was all well done and dumped on the plate by a server who didn't understand our request for medium rare (ironically given the name of the restaurant.) Had to request the pitcher of mimosas vs the waiter bringing them out because he seemed to be the only person serving the whole patio. They're a one trick pony, slices of steak and skinny fries which get cold too quick , Nobody told me you get steak refills if you hang around. The steak is pre sliced thin like Gyro meat. The only other option is Portabella mushrooms, sure would like to get chicken or a crabcake. Also would prefer traditional steak sauce as an option. Previously scheduled brunch plans kind of fell through, but opentable came through with a reservation for Medium Rare's bottomless brunch, priced at about $28.00 per person. The food options are limited(no small unlimited tapas style brunch options like say Cava or Ambar) but sometimes that comes in to be a positive rather negative. You get better quality of food when smaller plates are not being churned out like conveyor belt items. It's the drinks that are bottomless in this case. We were promptly seated upon arrival. The brunch comes with an option of fresh baked bread, either a garden salad/house salad or a yogurt parfait and of course your choice for mains. I went with the yogurt parfait and the Medium Rare chopped steak benedict option. My friend got the steak frites. I think our server forgot our order or entered them incorrectly because when he came to our table with food, it was definitely not what we ordered. But it was fine because we had been eating the bread (best warm baked bread oh gosh) and I had been eating my yogurt granola parfait (which they served before the main.. honestly I found that a bit odd since it seemed more dessert than appeteizer?) Once we got our food though it was excellent. My eggs benedict was really good, although I feel like the egg could have been poached a little longer than it had been. It still felt too runny and uncooked at bits. But the chopped steak was melt in your mouth good. And make sure to ask for an extra serving/cup of the secret sauce because it really does amp up the flavors of the steak and the fries and everything else. Our servers made sure to keep our drinks glass refilled, but one thing I did not like was having to ask the servers to clear our table of plates/glasses that were done being used. I've been here a couple of times with my colleagues. The first time I got sick,after eating the steak and frites. But the second time, I got sick again, making me question the hygiene and the quality of food. Not to mention when speaking to the manager (CARMEN) to request a birthday dessert for my boss. I've been a fan of Medium Rare for the past couple of years, only going for brunch. However, my recent experience was wholly underwhelming. First, the service was fine. I have zero complaints. The waiter came around sufficiently to make the bottomless drinks worth it. The food was the issue. Before I took a bite, I noticed the sauce/gravy was different. It looked darker, thinner, and lacked the peppercorns that usually accompany it. Despite the differences, I actually enjoyed the gravy more than I usually do. However, the steak was atrocious. It was room temperature and chewy (ordered Medium). It was disappointing. Tasted like it was frozen and then sat under a heat lamp after it was cooked. I expected better.
