Booked a meal for two at Medium Rare for a special occasion since we needed something pretty last-minute and not too fussy, just wanted a fun and easy night out. We booked for a weekday evening and the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived but filled in as the night went on. It's a pretty big space so I imagine they have busier times - the brunch with 25-cent drinks seems like it would draw crowds. The menu consists of pretty much a single option - a three-course meal consisting of bread, salad, and steak frites - and all you have to do is say how you like your steak cooked. Of course, I had to get medium rare. I felt like every component of the meal was solid, not perfect, but still enjoyable. The bread was high-quality but cut a bit too thick and toasted a bit too long which made it hard (literally) to bite into. The salad had tender butter lettuce, but the dressing wasn't quite punchy enough to my liking. The steak came with a really nice peppercorn gravy, but the particular cut is lean and somewhat tough (it has to be a pretty affordable steak, all things considered), so a cook on the rarer side helps keep it tender. No notes on the fries though, those were delicious! One fun and generous aspect of the meal is that a server comes around to give you a second serving of steak and fries partway through your meal! It's not as much food as it sounds since the steak portion is on the small side, but it's still very welcome. My second steak serving was cooked a bit more than the first despite both supposedly being medium rare. Didn't bother me much, but I did prefer the first rarer serving. Since I had indicated a special occasion on my reservation, our server gave us a complimentary sundae for dessert with a very dramatic sparkler on top! Loved that touch and our server Cody was great and friendly throughout. Overall, Medium Rare won't exactly blow the minds of hardcore foodies, but it's a nice way to have a meal out that isn't too casual or too fancy, doesn't induce decision anxiety, and has an incredibly streamlined menu that should satisfy just about any palate (minus vegetarians and vegans; there is supposed to be a mushroom alternative to the steak, but I'm sure you can do better elsewhere). From the moment we walked in, the service was outstanding. The staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive, which made the whole experience even better. The unlimited bread and butter was absolutely delicious--we couldn't stop asking for more! It was warm, fresh, and the perfect way to start the meal. My favorite part of the meal, though, had to be the French fries. They were cooked exactly how I like them: crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. The steak was tender and cooked well. While I've had steaks that were a little more flavorful elsewhere, I still enjoyed it and had no complaints. For dessert, we tried the carrot cake. It was very moist and clearly baked well, but it was a bit sweeter than my personal preference. We came to celebrate my best friend's birthday, and it turned into such a fun night. I had been wanting to try Medium Rare after hearing great things and having several friends recommend it, so I went solo to the Fishtown location. Unfortunately, what should have been a great dinner became one of the most uncomfortable restaurant experiences I've had in years. I initially sat at the bar for what I thought would be quick service. The bartender greeted me after a couple of minutes and said he'd be with me shortly. About 10 minutes later, he apologized and explained that he was behind on making drinks. I completely understood and waited patiently. After roughly 25 minutes without being served, though, I finally spoke with the manager. To be clear, I did NOT complain about the bartender personally. He was obviously overwhelmed, and I don't blame an employee for being given more work than he can reasonably handle. The manager was helpful and moved me to a table. After finishing my first serving of steak and fries, I asked my server how much it would cost to order more steak. She explained that the meal actually comes with a second serving, which I was excited to hear. After waiting about 10 minutes, I politely asked whether I needed to request the second serving or if it came automatically. She appeared irritated by the question and told me I just needed to sit and it would come. Eventually, my second plate arrived, but the steak was extremely well done and dried out--nothing like my first serving. Because my server wasn't around, I mentioned it to another employee. When my server eventually returned and I tried to address it with her, she responded dismissively, "Yes, you already told my coworker." I didn't argue or make a scene. I simply waited for the replacement I was told was coming "right out." Another 10 minutes passed, then another. She continued making rounds without updating me. After roughly 25 minutes, she finally returned--not with the replacement steak, but with my check--and said, "Whenever you're ready." I was genuinely confused and asked what happened to the replacement. She told me I had already received my two servings and that was the entire meal. Yes, I had technically received two plates--but one was the improperly cooked steak that I had brought to their attention and had specifically been told would be replaced. I spoke with the manager again, and this is where poor service became something much more troubling to me. The manager told me that my server claimed I had raised my voice at her. I did not. As a Black man, that accusation bothered me far more than slow service or an overcooked steak. I'm a master's-level clinical therapist who works with children; maintaining composure, emotional regulation, and de-escalation are literally part of my profession. Despite becoming increasingly frustrated, I remained conscious of my demeanor throughout this interaction. I cannot tell anyone what was in my server's mind, and I won't accuse someone of motives I cannot prove. But there is a very real history of Black men being perceived as more aggressive or threatening than their actual behavior warrants. Because of that history--and because of the consequences those perceptions can carry--being falsely characterized as having raised my voice is not something I consider trivial. That was the moment this stopped being simply a bad restaurant experience for me. I also want to be completely fair about what Medium Rare did well. The properly cooked steak, fries, and salad were genuinely delicious. Based strictly on the food, I understand why my friends recommended this restaurant. Unfortunately, the experience surrounding the meal overshadowed how much I enjoyed what I ate. I also give the manager credit. She listened to me, attempted to rectify the situation, offered me dessert, and ultimately comped my meal. Earlier in the evening, I had actually complimented her service. I appreciate that she made a genuine effort to salvage the experience. However, I made it clear that I did NOT come there looking for free food. I fully intended to pay for my entire meal and leave a 20%+ tip. I would have much rather paid full price, enjoyed my dinner, and become a returning customer than have my meal comped because the experience deteriorated this badly. Restaurants have bad nights. Bartenders get overwhelmed. Servers get too many tables. Kitchens overcook steaks. I can forgive all of those things. What I have a much harder time overlooking is being treated dismissively, being told a replacement was coming only to have my check dropped in front of me instead, and then learning that I had been portrayed to management as someone who raised his voice when I did not. The unfortunate part is that the food was legitimately good. I came to Medium Rare expecting a good steak. I left feeling like I had to defend my character and demeanor. Finally got to Medium Rare after it being on my list for months!! With all the snow, we had a bit of trouble getting up there, I called to let them know we'd be late and they we're incredibly accomdating and understanding. The space is huge with countless tables and a large bar area. Depending on where you're sitting, you can see right into the kitchen which is a fun touch. Our server, Macey, was lovely! She explained how everything worked and was super attentive and fun. The food was awesomeeeee. I expected the steak frites to be the star of the show, which it was, but the starter salad was shockingly good. Our steak was cooked perfectly and so flavorful. If you're not into a peppercorn sauce, make sure to give them a headsup as the first round it comes on the steak. Such a fun touch that they come by with more fries and steak as you need it. We booked a table on open table and with fingers crossed and bated breath we braved Fishtown. Parking: horrendous- even with handicapped plates. We found a spot four blocks over with 2 hour parking so lingering over our meal or grabbing dessert was not an option. Ambiance: Loud, tightly packed tables. Both indoor and outdoor dining, clean and industrial. Slightly off that some of the prep area was accessible by patrons. Service: Polite, attentive - orders are written on the table - there is a quite limited menu so the likelihood of an error is difficult Food: a full five stars on the frites and eggs - they may have single-handedly ruined scrambled eggs for me forever. Light, fluffy and plated so perfectly in a cute little ball. Fishtown chaos is a special kind of purgatory; Medium Rare makes it heaven on the other side. Medium Rare, a prix fixe steak house, had some good points and some oddities. We spent much of the meal trying to figure out who Medium Rare was created for (decided it was for those who preferred a casual, quirkier steak house at a lower price point), why the "wink wink" attitude toward seconds (it was in the Inquirer, so it's not a secret), and why was the table (and our orders) diagrammed on the table (initially we thought it was so the server/bus people wouldn't need to interrupt conversation to serve, because they would consult the diagram, but that didn't turn out to be the case) The house bread and butter was great--nice crust. The salad was fine. The fries were terrific--cripsy and well-seasoned. The steak was cooked almost to the temperatures requested and came pre-sliced and drenched in a steak sauce. I prefer my steak to be allowed to speak for itself: salt-and-peppered with a hard sear. I suggest that the sauce either be served on the side or each diner asked if they wanted sauce. Likewise, instead of automatically bringing seconds for everyone (I was leaning toward not having seconds in favor of dessert), it'd be more cost effective if the server asked who wanted seconds (and of what, perhaps only fries or only steak) and then brought out plated seconds (rather than having a bus person squat next to the table to tong-serve pre-sliced steak and then fries onto each diner's plate one grip at a time). The desserts were good: the "Matilda" chocolate cake had the most praise--upsold a scoop of vanilla ice cream to cut the chocolate. The key lime pie had a nice flavor. The ice cream sundae looked impressive, but was mostly whipped cream, and the toppings needed to have been applied more evenly--one side was hot fudge, the other side was walnuts, so no bite was equal. Five stars. This place is incredible. I got the steak frites and my girlfriend got the steak and eggs, and both were amazing. Definitely recommend getting the steak medium there's just a perfect amount of pink and it comes out great. The drinks are affordable(25cents for brunch), the vibe is awesome, and the whole staff was super friendly. Seriously loved every worker here. Yikes. In a city full of good restaurants where a family of four can easily dine well for $200 please don't waste your money on this chain. We honestly wanted to like it, even allocating a key holiday evening to the attempt, but it was a bust. The signature meal = a mediocre piece of bread, a decent small salad, and cold (yes cold) sliced steak in a tasteless sauce with some excellent French fries. The wine list is overpriced and mediocre, and the desserts rely on being extremely large and sugary rather than actually good. The staff try, but often leave you hanging waiting for water for long spells, don't even look over to check between courses, and are limited in their options for steering you towards the better food because there aren't any options. Yes, we got a 20% discount and free dessert for the cold steak, but that hardly makes up for the remaining $200 wasted on dinner. read more

Medium rares "secrete sauce" is a straight up gravy sauce and a sloppy version of steak au poivre. Salad is old and poorly massaged, vinagret was weak. Don't expect anything special as it is a 35 dollar "3 course meal" you're better off saving your money and cooking steak yourself. The music was awkward went from 80s rap music, jazz, to 90s pop. Lastly the service was mediocre and misleading regarding to the menu. As we were served a "2nd round" of steak and the menu was presented as a single "round" of steak. read more

This has been on our list since it opened and finally. Cozy ambiance on a rainy night and friendly service, combined with a well-presented prix fixe menu. The prix fixe consists of bread, salad, steak slices and fries. The actual food isn't really that special. The brown sauce on the steak is tangy. The sliced steak serving sizes are relatively small, but come in two rounds. Our party of four was still hungry and ordered three desserts - ice cream and whipped cream, key lime pie and double chocolate cake. The desserts, especially the double chocolate, just might have been the highlight. Glad we came, but will probably look at other neighborhood options next time. read more

We were excited to try this place and left disappointed. We sat inside. It was roomy and nice. The outdoor seating in the rear of the restaurant looked cool. Staff were friendly. We came on a Friday night. It was busy but far from packed. Their menu is pre fixe which keeps things simple. For $32 you get salad, crusty bread w salted butter and meat and fries w sauce. They also offer one appetizer which is a portabella mushroom. I thought the salad as pretty good, the Italian style bread was good, the fries were delicious and the steak was decently tender but for something is the centerpiece of your brand it wasn't that flavorful. Also it took forever for our food to come. It's not a complicated menu. The waiter apologized several times but had no explanation. And we weren't offered seconds as advertised on IG and honestly we waited so long we wouldn't have risked waiting more. I'm just very confused as to why we waited 30 minutes for our last course when it's the only thing on the menu. We thought the portabella was ok. It was just one mushroom sliced this w a char on it and a light red peeper sauce for $11. Totally not worth it. Before our meal we discussed dessert but they were out of the choc cake and the carrot cake would have been our second choice - here's the wierd thing, we sat at the table next to the dessert station and during our long ass meal we watched them cut and serve the carrot cake. It was iced all over per usual. Once it was gone they brought out another carrot cake- this one only had icing in between the layers and on top. Not in the sides. I guess they ran out of icing? Food consistency seems to be an issue (which I now see as I look at the pictures from others) There was potential for this to be a great place but waaay too many misses. It's a shame. read more

I was afraid the steak would be dry, the sauce wouldn't be to my liking, the fries would be awful, and that it would be too stuffy as a new restaurant. So relieved that I was wrong about everything! My group emptied all of our plates, including the second serving of steak frites. It's pretty casual - paper covering the tables and funny bathroom decorations. I had been looking forward having dinner at Medium Rare. It was highly recommended to me. It did not disappoint. The steak is delicious. The fries were perfect. The key lime and apple pie were incredible. Service was outstanding. Drinks are spot-on. It's a very comfortable and attractive setting. The value is amazing. They serve a large meal and then give you a bigger second helping for about the same price that an area deli will charge you for a pastrami sandwich. And brunch is outstanding. Thank you! read more

Immediately welcomed and seated at our table. Our server, Brandon, was FANTASTIC from the start. Started with cocktails and salad. Super crisp and love the secret dressing on it. We opted for the traditional steal frites and the mushroom. So freaking good! The gravy on the steak....I could bathe in it. Our server brought us extra for the fries. The steak was literally inhaled and I had told my husband...wow I could totally eat another one. Lots of surprises here and will absolutely be back. read more
