It is what it is: A great authentic Punjabi (North Indian) place. Judging on food alone, this is one of the best North Indian Restaurants in Berkeley. They have a different philosphy in cooking than their neighbors across the street, Breads of India. They both offer great food. Mehak is a better value for the money and in some ways more authentic and less pretentious than the guys across the street. Mehak is not going to win awards for ambience or having a line of people waiting to get in. In fact the restaurant seems a big grungy and in need of a remodelling. They don't offer beer or wine on their menu, although I believe you can bring your own . Important info: They DO off "home delivery", in addition to "carry-out" if you dont want to eat in their restaurant - The carry-out menus are by the door, if you happen to eat there pick one up. Mehak's great. I've never actually been there 'cause my friends and I found out we could order online and haven't looked back. At least for delivery, they've got big portions and delicious curries. Spices and flavoring on all the dishes we've ordered is perfect. You know, not unspicy but also not too hot at all. Only minor complaint is that they don't have paneer tikka. Which is weird because they have chicken tikka. I don't actually know anything about India or Indian food, though, so maybe my complaint is unfounded. Anyway. Delivery's always really quick. The best thing on the menu - Chicken Tikka Masala with either rice or naan. The lunch buffet doesn't offer a very good selection. The Rogan Josh's lamb is gamey. The Samosas are overly starchy. I order delivery from here about twice a month, and the food consistently arrives within 30-45 minutes and is piping hot! They ask if you want your dishes hot, medium or mild - I used to say hot, but after a couple orders of tongue-scorching spiciness, I now stick to medium in order to enjoy all the other non-chili pepper flavors in the dish. The amount of meat they use fluctuates with each order. Samosas are flavorful, but a bit greasy. Punjabi chicken curry is just like how mom would make it if she were from Punjab, I'm guessing. The cream sauce of the chicken tikka masala is pretty divine. I love the chana masala and dal makhni, especially when it gets combined on my plate with rice. Mmm! The tamarind chutney was better, but still watery and odd. The service was fine, though a little haphazard, and the rest of the food was unremarkable. Also, I was the only Indian customer, which always makes me suspicious in an Indian restaurant (especially since the place across the street was packed with them). I think the best thing about this place is the fact that it delivers! Other than that, total and complete hit or miss. Portion sizes on delivery are enough to serve 3-4 normal sized people, or 1-2 flufflupsocious people like my gf and I. Prices are decent, delevery time isn't bad eithier. The food itself, meh. My gf really digs the fried cheese things, and I really dig the rice. Sadly, they don't have the butter chicken that is my happy place in Indian food. What is really fasicnating is that the food, no matter how many times we order the same thing....has never tasted the same twice. I love this spot! I love take out cause I'm soooooooooo lazy and never have time to go grocery shopping and I also loooove Indian food - I found these guys on grubhub and have ordered from them a handful of times now. I usually order chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, and bangan bharta. All entrees come with rice which is nice. I've also had their naan and kheer which are super tasty. The portions are always big and I always have left overs for a few meals. Good prices. I ordered some food tonight and wrote a note asking to make the food a little less spicy today and they totally paid attention to it. yay! Delicious and super cheap! Delivery is fast and so awesome to have after a long day at work. We usually get the chicken tikka masala and vindaloo or tandoori chicken. Their chicken naan and samosas are also bomb. Don't go here expecting for a flavor explosion, but it is tasty/spicy and we haven't gotten sick (knock on wood). Their mild is MILD so ask for spicy if that's what you want. We're able to get two entrees, two orders of naan and samosas for under 35 (including tip and delivery) ... kinda spectacular. This is my favorite Indian place in Berkeley and Oakland. I have loved everything I've ordered from this place, my two favorite entrees are the saag paneer and chicken tikka masala though. All of the naan's are tasty, garlic is always my favorite but the cheese one is a close second. The dahl soup is my current obsession, so tasty and comforting. I get delivery from them all of the time for lunch, it rarely takes any more than an hour. Really cheap Indian food! Their menu is a little tiny, but it's so cheap it's worth it. I like their tikka masala and saag. We usually order with Chicken, but as usual other meats and a vegetarian option are also available. All the dishes come with rice and naan. Their naan....seems to taste better when we do take out. The one time we ate at the restaurant the naan was more crunchy than fluffy, but it was still ok. Also the portion sizes seem a little larger when we do take out. But again, it's so cheap, I can't complain! It's just down the street from where I stay in Berkeley when I visit, so it's super convenient and again, it's SOOOO cheap. I love this place for delivery. I've never been inside, though. Great coupons (3 for 2 special) and delicious food. I typically get the Chicken Tikka Masala (delicious) and a paneer. The eggplant is good, too. I decided to get on Yelp and write a review after a good customer service experience--I ordered by telephone without the benefit of a menu, and when they delivered the food one of the dishes wasn't what I wanted. We ordered chicken tikka masala, chicken curry and cheese naan. IT WAS ALL FANTASTIC! TIP: We ordered both dishes at a medium spice level, the chicken curry was SPICY but I liked it, so if you don't like spicy things maybe go light on the spice level for the curry. The food here is sub par to other Indian restaurants I have eaten at, but this restaurant was the only one that offered to deliver to my location at work as I'm in the hills of Berkeley. Not to long after I placed my pre-order on Eat24 so that it would be delivered during my lunch hour, I get a call from the restaurant saying that unfortunately they are unable to proceed with my order due to the fact that their driver was saying my location was too far and did not want to make the drive. I've ordered take out or delivery a number of times over the past 2 years. I have not been disappointed yet! I ordered my go to comfort meal which is Palak Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala (not super authentic but comfort food nonetheless). Placed my order just about an hour before they closed for delivery. Everything arrived in the time given, hot and freshly made! Really appreciate having a restaurant that is close by and doesn't get upset about delivery when I'm technically in walking distance but feeling lazy. I found this place on Groupon and decided to try it. It was amazingly good! We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Curry, Madras Chili Chicken, (all medium spicy) and Naan. They were all delicious. I used to live close to Mehak so went there all the time. They have a much larger vegetarian variety of dishes than Breads of India across the street. I think the food is good and I have always been able to find a parking spot within a block. Service is pretty fast...but the place is cold--bring a coat. This is the spot. I get delivery from here pretty often, and have eaten in a few times too. Their food is always flavorful and delicious. They do a great job with delivery. It's often way faster than the estimates, which can be great, but keep that in mind if you're thinking of taking a quick shower or something! Once we went to call them to try to add another dish to our order, thinking we had just placed it maybe 15 minutes before, and it had said 40 minutes estimate, but when we called, the call literally got interrupted by the person knocking on our door. But who's upset if their food arrives super early? Blessing in disguise. Everything is packed to travel well too, and arrives very hot. Eating in has always been a fine experience. The interior of the restaurant is nothing special, but that's not why I go to Mehak - I go because their food is top notch, very consistent, and super affordable! read more

If you like setting your money on fire while also being very hungry, this is the place for you. In all other cases, do not bother with this place. I ordered delivery even though the estimated delivery time was 60-70 minutes. Eighty minutes later, still no food. So I give them a call. They are reasonably apologetic, tell me things have been very busy and that I'd get my food in 20 minutes. Yet another 30 minutes later, still no food. So I call them again, only to be told that it would be ANOTHER 20 minutes. "Next time" I would get some complimentary items. I guess it's a money-saving strategy on their part--as if I would order their food ever again. I told them to cancel my order, and they refused! After repeated complaints, they offered a 25% "courtesy" refund, which leaves me paying 75% for cold food that I didn't even need anymore (naturally, we had already eaten by the time the food actually arrived). Had Veggie Samosas and Aloo Gohbi here and both were very good. I recommend ordering them spicy, as the spices they use are really good. They have a lot of flavor and it turned a dish that can sometimes be bland and boring in to something much better than I've had $50/plate restaurants. Service was good and friendly. I was the only one doing sit down dining, but it was clear from the constant flow of take out drivers coming through that the locals realize what a gem they have in this place. DISGUSTING I went in at 2:00PM to get take out from the buffet. The tandoori chicken looked scary, totally dried out with deep cracks in it. Then I checked the chicken curry dish. There was a large volume of heavy curry, the consistency of gravy, but there were no chicken pieces in it. I mentioned it to the waiter who said to wait just a minute. Then he disappeared. The curried lamb looked much the same. Because I was exhausted and hungry, I made the poor choice of not asking for my money back. I waited one minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes. Finally the waiter reappeared and brought boiled chicken which he added to the gravy. He didn't restock any of the other items. I had some curried chicken, curried lamb, and some veggie dish. The curries were awful. I don't understand how other reviewers give 4 or 5 stars to this place. I will never return there. read more

My Chilli Chicken was dry and stale, so dry that the chicken was scraping the inside of my mouth. Unlike the usual chinese inspired sauce, this chicken tasted like tomato puree out of a jar topped lazily cut huge bell peppers. The rice were cooked well. The samosas were filled with the potato equivalent of pink slime: Bland, oily, obviously stale and refried after sitting in the back of Mehak's freezer. The kheer (rice pudding) was delicious! I ended up eating it as my main course :D I wasn't expecting a michelin meal delivered to my doorstep but even for a cheap delivery, my dinner was very disappointing. read more

I've ordered from Mehak a couple of times via GrubHub for lunch when I'm desperately craving Indian food. It always hits the spot, though the minimum dollar amount for delivery means I end up with way too much food. (But hey, leftovers are half the fun.) They do a great job on my standard favorites: lamb saag, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan. I ask for medium spicy and have not been disappointed yet. Delivery speed can vary, but of course that is natural depending on time of day. I think I tend to hit them during the lunch rush, so it can take awhile to receive the food - sometimes upwards of an hour and a half - but everything always arrives nice and hot. read more

Got delivery with the Elf from this place, and the raita was a bit on the soupy side, and their idea of "spicy" was pretty clearly "gringo spicy". This is our go to Indian Restaurant. The naans, chicken tikka masala, and eggplant dishes are all wonderful. It's never too crowded.

Food was, in the beginning, inconsistent (very greasy and/or --skimpy on content or sometimes very very good)--especially if you go in & sit down. They managed to raise their regular menu prices from when they first opened. I'm not sure if this is because Breads of India charges so much (so Mehak figures it can go a little higher). I think after they raised prices I was a bit more reluctant in paying so much for hit/or miss food. Sometimes it's fabulous, other times its just meh. [UPDATE 11/06: they're getting a boost to four stars from me for the added delivery service. They're one of only a few Indian/Pakistani places I've found who delivers--and that's something special, along with their Saag Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala. Their quality consistency has been very good lately, however I usually get take out rather than the buffet/sit-in.] [UPDATE#2 4/07: OK, they're losing a star for the hit or miss delivery service. twice now we've had to wait a good hour and half/2 hours for delivery. The only non-pizza delivery you can get around the emeryville area, although you have to order a minimum of $15 to have that option. I've only ordered them through delivery.com, which is convenient... but can have their downsides too. The last time I ordered online, it took the restaurant 30 minutes to call me and let me know that they no longer serve the cheese fritters.
