This is the spot. I get delivery from here pretty often, and have eaten in a few times too. Their food is always flavorful and delicious. They do a great job with delivery. It's often way faster than the estimates, which can be great, but keep that in mind if you're thinking of taking a quick shower or something! Once we went to call them to try to add another dish to our order, thinking we had just placed it maybe 15 minutes before, and it had said 40 minutes estimate, but when we called, the call literally got interrupted by the person knocking on our door. But who's upset if their food arrives super early? Blessing in disguise. Everything is packed to travel well too, and arrives very hot. Eating in has always been a fine experience. If you like setting your money on fire while also being very hungry, this is the place for you. In all other cases, do not bother with this place. I ordered delivery even though the estimated delivery time was 60-70 minutes. Eighty minutes later, still no food. So I give them a call. They are reasonably apologetic, tell me things have been very busy and that I'd get my food in 20 minutes. Yet another 30 minutes later, still no food. So I call them again, only to be told that it would be ANOTHER 20 minutes. "Next time" I would get some complimentary items. I guess it's a money-saving strategy on their part--as if I would order their food ever again. I told them to cancel my order, and they refused! After repeated complaints, they offered a 25% "courtesy" refund, which leaves me paying 75% for cold food that I didn't even need anymore (naturally, we had already eaten by the time the food actually arrived). Had Veggie Samosas and Aloo Gohbi here and both were very good. I recommend ordering them spicy, as the spices they use are really good. They have a lot of flavor and it turned a dish that can sometimes be bland and boring in to something much better than I've had $50/plate restaurants. Service was good and friendly. I was the only one doing sit down dining, but it was clear from the constant flow of take out drivers coming through that the locals realize what a gem they have in this place. Mmm. Kashmiri Naan. Delicious. Cherry, raisins, coconut and nuts. The best naan I've had anywhere. Although, as others have stated, the decor is a bit bland, the food more than makes up for it. I have introduced several people to Mehak, and all have loved it. Delivery is also a plus. It comes fairly fast, and is always hot. Wheelchair access note: While the facility is accessible, the front door will require assistance as they do not have an automatic door opener, and the angles on it probably make it hard to open from a chair. This location seems like a lucky one. I've been eating here since it was Bangkok Tai Cuisine (now located at 1459 University) a few decades ago. If you need Tai food, I'd recommend them. read more

I really had high hopes. Someone had mentioned this place for their buffet over at Chowhound. I was looking for an altenative for Priya which while not the best, i think is one of the better Indian buffets. go here today and note they have a very small lunch buffet. not a big deal if the food delievered, but it really under-whelmed. First off, the food was almost cold, a bit under room temperature. I understand that maybe if a place does not have a lot of turnaround, turning down the heat will keep the food from drying out. BUT, this buffet has smaller countainers of food than most. Their tandoori chicken looked bland, had no marinade on it. Was it worth $6.99? I guess, but I would never see the need to ever go back as I can think of many other ways to spend $6.99 on lunch. read more

Since I moved back to the Bay Area 6 months ago, I have been in search for the best Saag Paneer... and finally- I found it! It is so delicious and the texture and consistency is just right. Their vegetable samosa dipped in tamarind chutney is to die for and the Tandori Chicken is fresh and perfectly spiced. I highly recommend this place to everyone. Dave is here man! Everything here can be made how you like it and the buffet is good value. The chai is actually a little spicy which stands out because most places make a bad flat black tea chai instead of masala chai. One star lost because of parking, but they deliver so five stars anyway. Update: still consistently good, always hot chai and naan, good chaat, and large buffet. Little effort has been made to brighten up the restaurant. My bf & I have been loving Mehak and rooting for its success ever since it opened. Way more friendly than Breads of India right across the street, way tastier and much larger portions too-- we order two entrees and bread and there's enough food for two dinners. Or like us, you save the yummy leftover curry sauce, throw in some veggies from the fridge and you have a 3rd meal! Best dishes: Tandoori chicken-- very juicy & tender, finger lickin' good! Lamb korma-- lots of garlic & lots of tender lamb cubes (they used to skimp on the lamb but it's much, much improved), incredibly creamy & decadent. Onion kulcha-- forget boring ol' garlic naan, this is the way to go! If you want pretention, presentation and overrated food, go to Breads. Sitting across the street in the shadow of Breads of India, this place doesn't get the patronage it deserves. My girlfriend and I always would eat at Breads of India and would wonder what this place was like. A month ago, we tried it out and were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent, even if the ambience is not all that great. If they dimmed the lighting just a tad, it would be much better. We both got veggie options, I think I got the Malai Kofta and a curry and it was flavorful yet not too spicy. The nan was excellent. I know my Indian food and this place delivers. The place deserves more customers and I recommend people to try something different and give this place a chance, you will not be dissapointed. read more

And the portions were huge for the price. 2. Chicken tikki masala: the sauce was so thin, like water. The flavor was bland and the chicken cubes were dry. I'm used to my CTM being thick and creamy. This was not. It came with rice, which was meh. 3. Raita: super sour, but still good. It's cheap but I think it's easy to get better quality around here. I've been using their delivery for about 10 years. It used to be a 5-star place, but lately the quality has been hit or miss. I usually get the chicken tikka masala, which used to be the best in town. Now, it's sometimes really good, sometimes average. They have $15 minimum order for free delivery. Lately, whenever I order my usual, which amounts to $15.50, they have told me that I need to order more than $16. I decided to not order any more directly from them, but rather use eat24. This place was very disappointing, unfortunately. Maybe we ordered the wrong things? Or maybe this is more of a lunch place? Maybe the regular chef doesn't work on Saturday night at 7 pm? We had the cucumber salad, green salad, prawn vindaloo, and chana masala. Both salads were just okay. Both were dusted with some sort of spice powder. The prawn vindaloo tasted like it was made with some very old prawns, and that bad flavor pervaded the dish making it unenjoyable to eat. The chana masal tasted like what you would get in one of those ready-to-eat foil pouched meals. Everything tasted like it was made with powdered spices. I don't know about you, but when I go to an Indian restaurant I expect the food to be made with actual ginger, chilis, and garlic, not powders. The best tasting thing on the table was the naan. This place serves pretty reliably good food. The samosas are excellent. I usually spring for the Mutter Paneer. I think some of the dishes (aloo / cauliflower curry, for example) are a little bit on the bland side, but the breads are excellent and so are the portion sizes. A Monday night with cheap Indian food in mind and an Entertainment Book coupon spurred our decision to eat here. There was no one else eating in this place, but we could see several couples dining at the Indian Bread place across the street. First thought- why is this place so empty? After strolling in, we noticed the atmosphere was definitely lacking, but we were in no mood for visual distractions. We were hungry for some yummies. We ordered my two standard dishes that I use to compare all Indian restaurants: Saag Paneer and Chana Masala. I had to order the raita and spicy pickle on the side, but they were cheap (about $1 each). We also couldn't resist the Garlic Naan. When the Saag came out I noticed right away that it looked incredibly average. The spinach was overcooked and overprocessed- this was definitely not Udupi Palace. The Chana Masala, however, looked quite appetizing. We ordered our food medium-spicy, which turned out to be enough to just numb our tastebuds a bit, which was a little unfortunate since the underlying flavors of the dishes were actually good, despite the soggy spinach. The garbanzo beans in the Chana Masala also seemed extra-soft, but actually I liked the way this texture played out. The Garlic Naan came out hot and steamy, and was just what you would expect out of a place with a tandoori oven. There was something about the garlic on the Naan that seemed a little artificial, and I couldn't quite place what it was. It could have been my eyes deceiving me, since they appeared to use tumeric to color the garlic (it was bright yellow). I couldn't believe they would use anything but ghee, but I also thought I detected flavors reminiscent of margarine. Nevertheless, the Naan was good, and I'd probably forego the garlic next time. I'm going to make my rounds through all the Berkeley Indian places before I go back here again. If I go back, I'd try some other dishes, or perhaps hit up the $6.99 lunch buffet I saw advertised in the window. read more

I have never been to the physical restaurant, but we have had delivery from here several times. The people delivering the order have always been friendly- the last guy apologized for a delay that still put him at our door 30 minutes ahead of the estimated delivery time. The food is good. Sometimes the seasoning level, particularly salt, is hit or miss, but we can fix that at home. The kofta were dry last time, but the sauce was fantastic and well spiced. I cannot believe this amazing place has 3 1/2 stars. I have come to this restaurant for about 10 years now and it is some of the best Indian food I have ever had. I strongly urge everyone and anyone to try the Chicken Tikka, the Mixed Veggi, the Channa Masala and a couple different types of their yummy naan. The family that runs this place has been there since before the gentrification of this neighborhood and work diligently to counteract it while also keeping their prices incredibly low. Mehak is OG Bay Area. Mehak is my Home Room and my late-night Gordo run. Their food is nostalgic and their naan is the basis on which I judge all other naan. If you're still reading this and you're curious to know more, and you don't care for a swanky experience, Mehak is my #1 recommendation. If not, there's two Indian places nearby that might be more your speed. read more

Worth ordering: naan, the apricot chicken (hyderabadi); the saag; and the pakora are THE BEST. The service is nice and friendly and it's generally a good deal for the money. Not worth it: the tandoori chicken is too dry for my taste. I've also had bad delivery experiences - I would swear it's not the same kitchen. There's no parking lot, so it can be dicey to park on Sacrament or Dwight. I've gone fairly often and never had a problem getting a table. The portions were large and the food was decent (I had saag paneer and tried the plain naan, the garlic naan, and the cheese naan), but definitely not the best Indian food I have ever had. The dishes (as well as the raita) were very soupy so we ended up with a high rice/dish ratio to avoid needing bowls and spoons. My saag paneer was well-spiced (I got it medium), but the spinach was a soupy puree and the chunks of paneer were large and few. I would order from here again in a pinch, but I would investigate other Indian restaurants in Berkeley first. read more

Probably the best deal on good Indian food that I've had in Berkeley so far. Other places I've eaten at charge extra for rice, but it is included with the curries here, and the naan portions are generous as well.
