This place is an old school no frills tavern but has tons of character. Great old long bar lots of old photos and signs and always a local favorite. The food is simple and served dive bar style on styrofoam plates but it's affordable and good. I love their egg salad sandwich although wish they would upgrade the bread. I stopped in here for a beer tonight. It's a throwback to the forties and proud of it. I sat down to order a beer. me: What kind of beers do you have on tap? bartender: Budweiser, Miller lite, Coors Lite and Dab. me: What is Dab? bartender: it's a German Ale me: Is it hoppy? bartender: No. it's a German Ale me: Um, okay. I'll have one of those. Then later I had a taste for something salty me: beertender, what do you have that's salty? bartender: ...pretzels. (as if everyone in the world knew that) me: what else? bartender: Potato chips me: Anything else? bartender: he points to the sign that says "When it's Meier's, it's burgers, tots and Dab." and says "we have tator tots." me: okay,,, I've got the Dab, I might as well have some tots. (they were underwhelming). Not amazing food or stimulating conversation but there is just something appealing about a place that has zero pretense. They are unapologetically who they are. Old school! Place was pleasantly bustling on a Saturday afternoon. This place is appealing because it's obviously been here awhile and is comfortable with zero pretension. I had a tuna melt - it was luscious. I'd just had two fillings and couldn't eat anything real crunchy, so our waitress' suggestion was genius. Really great tuna melt too, I just didn't eat the crusts. Not because they weren't good, but because of the aforementioned fillings earlier that day. No crunchy! However, the vodka sodas I drank to wash away the anxiety about those fillings were welcome, frosty and tasty. I'll look forward to returning for one of those burgers! read more

Went here for nostalgic reasons and was appalled at the condition of the place. The bathrooms are atrocious. Mold & filth on the floors, walls, ceiling vents and around the sink. Gas stations are cleaner than this. Some wall panels in the dining area are coming off from either water damage or rotting. This can't be up to code. Bar tender was old and angry. Cash only is sketchy. Someone must have a connection with the village to keep this dump running. read more

Just tried this place after passing by numerous time - it's adorable. Laid back, good service and unique atmosphere. Will go back for sure.

Still serves your food on a styrofoam plate, (an upgrade from paper plates?). Still has the ketchup and mustard packets on the tables. Still offers tater tots for no stupid 'upcharge' that I've complained about in other reviews. Still offers giant steins of Dab beer. Still has great burgers at a great price. Still has egg salad sandwiches and liver sausage sandwiches. Still go to a deli if you want a reuben. Still is packed on most days for lunch and dinner. Still has the same old tables and chairs and the windows are open in the summer. Still has servers with a little edgy attitude and a smile. Still is cash only. Still hasn't changed much if at all in my time on this earth (I think it's called 'old school' now :-), which has been a long time, and I hope it doesn't. This place is authentically old but modern enough. It's like stepping back into your grandparent's time. The surroundings will hold your interest. The food was good......not great but good. I had a good reuben and cole slaw. Others in my party had burgers, a french dip and a club sandwich. All said they were good as they woofed them down. The beer list is short but the Dab beer caught everybody's attention. It was.......good. They also had Berghoff Root Beer in bottles. I was told it was good. The service was friendly and.....good. I've been coming to Meier's since I was a kid. DAB (when I was old enough), Tots and a burger have always been great. People need to talk more about how good the burger is- greasy and delicious as it should be. No frills here as other people have said, but I really needed to post my own experience to combat the mediocre average Yelp rating this place has. I thought it would be acclaimed, but I guess some people can't handle an old school tavern with old school options. I hope they never go out of business. read more

Giving Meier's anything less than 5 stars says less about the establishment, and more about the reviewer. This place is authentic, unapologetic and completely transparent. Saying that it is dated is obtuse, it would be like saying Target is too red. If you want a 6 page menu with 100 choices, go to Cheesecake Factory, you'll get a great meal. If you want a good beer, with a solid burger and tots and want to remember what it was like when times were far more simple, then go to Meier's. I've been coming to Meier's for almost 30 years. Have eaten here off and on for 30+ years. Burgers are okay. This time we ordered fried fish (cod) which again was okay. I asked for a slice of onion and had to ask twice more after the dish was served. A simple beer order required two requests. The service (or server more accurately) was lackluster. I'm going to make this short... The tuna melt was delicious and filling but I could have had more tater tots. I don't mind my food served on a styrofoam plate(paper would be better for eco friendly purposes) but the plate wasn't big enough to hold more tater tots(not that I'm whining about it). Other than the good sandwich, yummy tater tots and decent beer/wine selections, the place is super outdated and even if it's a non smoking restaurant/pub, the whole place smelled like cigarette smoke. They only accept cash because they still use the old cash register when you pay at the counter. They do not have a dessert menu although they sell chocolate bars by the counter area for 99 cents each and they have beer cans and cigarettes for sale there as well. I've passed by this spot a zillion times and thought that the number of cars in the parking lot can't be wrong. My instincts were correct - I'm just not sure what has taken me so long to visit. This is definitely a no frills spot - the perfect example of a dive. Seating is first come, first serve. There are no napkins on the table and no silverware. Plates are of the interesting plastic blend variety. I asked for their white wine options and was given...one...a chardonnay. What the hell...I'd try it. I have no idea what it was, but it was tasty and at $3.75...it was reasonable for whatever it was! I had the cheeseburger with tater tots. I love my burgers - seriously - and this is one fantastic burger. It was juicy, not greasy and had great flavor. You can choose to get grilled or raw onions (I chose neither), along with tomato, lettuce, pickles (good ones at that) and quite possibly one of the best burger buns ever. Delicious - I finished every bite and could have licked the plastic-ish plate! Don't go to this spot if you are looking for fine dining - this is a casual, laid back, delicious burger joint (no menus - it's on the table!). Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Well, it's an old-school dive bar in the middle of the suburbs. That should tell you all that you need to know. But you have to respect a place that is soaked to the bones with history, a trait which is not at all common these days. Based on the architecture and the proximity to 94, it looks like this place started as a late-19th-century inn. How cool is that? The inside maintains the same appearance that it probably had in the 1950s and 60s, except for the flat-screen TVs above the bar. "What beers do you have on draft?" "DAB, Budweiser, Miller Lite, and Coors Lite." Oh dear. Well, DAB it is, I guess. But they serve it in a big, chilled, faceted mug, and they serve it with a smile. And four of them cost $19.75 (I have no idea how this math works). There are two types of dive bars: those where they love the regulars but treat everybody else like shit, and those which seem to welcome everyone. Meier's is the latter, so between that factor and the character of the building itself, this is a great after-work watering hole despite the limited beer selection. read more

I took my family for lunch today and we were immediately seated and drink order was somewhat prompt, considering the waitress was busy. I asked if they had lemonade and ice tea, which I was told they did, and I asked for an Arnold Palmer. I was brought a lemonade. Then we waited and waited. I watched the owner/manager look directly at our table and walk away to behind the bar. The waitress, who was the only one, was asking multiple, already served tables for a second round of drinks around us. She proceeded to clear tables around us as well as talking with the patrons. Note there was no wait for seating. After 23 minutes from receiving our drinks we decided to go somewhere else since it didn't look like the waitress was going to take our order. As my family was walking out, the waitress asked us, oh you're not going to order food? I asked for check. As I was leaving I told her and the owner/manager that it was unacceptable service and that they need to a better job. There was never an apology and I was charged for 3 of the 4 drinks, which I refused to pay for my lemonade. Enjoy your $10 we will never go back again. Why don't more restaurants look like an old house? Why don't more bars have Parliament Lights lights? Who knows. Some things are not as they should be but Meier's is. Went here with my wife and a family friend for lunch. It had the ambience of an old style tavern. I had a cheeseburger that was good. My wife had the philly cheese steak and she ordered it with no onyons and cheese. When it arrived it had onions and very little cheese. I was kind of disappointed about that but my wife did not want to wait for another one to be made. A friend also had a cheeseburger that was good he said. At the time you we K then they were busy with all the tables filled were we were sitting. It did seem that the waitress was rushed when taking order that is probably why it was wrong when it came out. Meiers Tavern looks and feels like it was loaded onto a truck in Milwaukee, employees and all, and transplanted to Chicago's north shore. Of course, this is because this place is a relic from a time long past and places like it are a rare find in Chicagoland. Wisconsin still embraces this kind of place, which is why you'll find them all over Milwaukee I suppose. A great neighborhood tavern with an inch of dust on everything, really tacky (in a good way) beer signs from the 60's and 70's on the walls, bottles of booze that must be forty years old, cheap beer, and cheap eats served on paper plates. The menu consists of burgers served on grocery store buns, grilled cheese sandwiches on white bread (add ham if you'd like), and other basic stuff all served with fried tater tots. German DAB beer on draft is perfect way to wash down all of this no-nonsense picnicky pub grub. If you're feeling thirsty and want to grab something for later, Meiers also sells booze, beer, and wine to go from their little liquor store section by the main entrance. A great place that still manages to survive in the midst of corporate crap bars taking over Chicago. I highly recommend a visit to this great slice of Americana while it lasts. read more

Drinks over 2 ingredients are discouraged. Did I mention the cheap beers? It really is like stepping into the twilight zone of dive bars past.
