Mein is a solid Cantonese restaurant in Chinatown, Houston especially if you have some guests that are in the mood for trying a variety of Asian cuisine. Service is also attentive and friendly. The ambience is modern, although a bit loud making it difficult to not yell across the table in order to be heard. The food comes out piping hot and fresh, which is always a plus. Our favorites were the eggplant and Japanese tofu. The one downside was the small portion size, which I wasn't used to especially after previously going to other Chinese restaurants in the area. The tofu was silk smooth and not oily, but the six pieces for the $$ paid was not worth. :( Not sure if it was just this dish, though, but I'm definitely used to a larger tofu portion size in other restaurants. The service is super quick and the staff is friendly, but the food here is mediocre at best and came out warm. I came in with some friends on a Thursday night and the restaurant was not too busy. From the outside the restaurant looks pretty dim lit, but upon entering it is very bright inside. The space itself is pretty large with plenty of seating. We ordered the sansai egg tofu which mainly tasted like thickened soy sauce. There was no other flavor profile to it. The texture of the egg tofu was good, though the outside could use a little crisp. We also ordered the calamari--this was the best dish we ordered. It was super crispy and you could customize how much salt and lime you wanted on it. We also got the beef flat rice noodle, which ended up being pretty bland. The Garlic Yu Choy was also good, but it's difficult to make this dish improperly. The chili oil here does not have much flavor, but it packs a kick! As for the complementary rice, rather than giving enough for the table, one bowl was given per entree. For dessert we got the lava toast. The lava toast tasted pretty similar to a french toast, but the insides were filled with salted egg liquid-y goodness. I do wish the outside was crispier, but the inside was still good. A group of 6 of us tried this restaurant out for the first time. It's best to come early because it gets really busy during lunchtime. All the food we ordered were delicious: snow pea leaves, squid ink fried rice, yeung chow fried rice, firecracker chicken, and char kuey teow. The staff was very accommodating. Nut allergy warning - many dishes contain nuts, but the restaurant does a great job of labeling and I had no cross contamination issues. Mein is a very, very popular Chinese fusion restaurant located, as other reviews note, in a small strip mall that is difficult to park in. Some of my other favorite restaurants are also in this plaza. They do not take reservations on weekends, unfortunately, and are not great at accommodating large parties. That being said, we showed up with 20 people on a Saturday night and were very lucky to get two tables of 10 each without a wait. Here was our order for the entire group of 20. It was nearly perfect, a small amount of leftovers. We went for dinner on a Friday around 6pm and there was no wait for a table. This restaurant shares the lot with several other restaurants along with a grocery store. Therefore, it might not be easy to park directly in front of the place. We had clams, crispy duck, and beef flat noodle. The food is definitely Cantonese style and when someone asked for chili oil, it had to be brought out from the back. Staff is proficient in English. The clams in black bean sauce had a lighter, brown sauce and its taste was good but not as sharp in black bean as other places. The clams were fresh and meaty. Did not have much sand and the sauce was not overly seafood tasting. It was light and balanced. The crispy duck came with cucumbers, green onions, sauce, horseradish, and two wraps. It was enough to enjoy as a meal for one person or an appetizer, as mentioned. Very crispy and delicious if you like duck. The beef flat noodle was one of the best I have eaten because the beef was soft and tasty and the dish was not overly salty. The flat noodles were large and did not stick together. The atmosphere was fun with great decorations that created a 1930s feel. Great for groups and eclectic decorations that made you feel like you were eating in the street. Very fun. My best friend Allen suggest we try this restaurant and I am very happy we did! First and foremost the manager, Victor is doing an absolutely great job running this establishment. He stopped by our table and gave us a brief history on this restaurant as well as nighttime restaurant next-door. Are used to go to nighttime Thai before they close down now. It's a Ramen restaurant. Still the same name but they took the Thai out of the name as they sell ramen now. Victor is very personable and is doing an excellent job here. We had a great conversation with him. Turns out he manages quite a few of their properties and we're going to go and give them all a try. Thank you again Victor for just a top-notch experience at your restaurant. Food : the food is absolutely amazing. I got the scallion beef dish and it reminded me of a dish that I had at nighttime Thai restaurant before. Absolutely amazing. Grilled to perfection, the beef and seasoning along with all the flavors is simply top-notch. My girlfriend went with the firecracker chicken, which was exceptionally good as well. We shared both dishes and kept complementing each other's dish. Once again, the food here is top-notch. Their menu here is quite extensive so we will definitely be back to try several things off of their menu. I can only imagine everything here is simply top-notch. Adding this place to my list of Chinatown favorites! We arrived with a party of five around 12:30 on Sunday and were seated right away. Their menu has a great variety of dumplings, noodle dishes, and traditional meat you would expect at a Chinese restaurant. Hard to pick a favorite because I would honestly recommend everything we ordered. The garlic butter lobsters were a seasonal item and I highly recommend - they were so delicious and very reasonably priced ($60 for two lobsters)! The red oil dumplings made a great appetizer. The beef satay hor-fun is exactly what you would expect, a savory beef noodle dish that everyone enjoyed. We also ordered the squid ink fried rice because it looked so interesting - I couldn't really tell the difference between regular fried rice but it was still good. Had a really nice meal and time. Came in understanding that this place is popular and has and would have a bit of a wait. When we arrived parking was pretty full through the whole shopping center so watch out as it could take a minute or be a little struggle for a parking spot at peak time. Saw a security guy walking around so that was nice to see in the area (or not if he wasn't legit lol). When we arrived we got our name on the list, waited about 10 minutes outside in their outside seating, and got seated. The restaurant has a pretty standard but cool vibe. All around brightly lit, open space which made a little bit loud, but nothing wrong with that for a casual dinner date, just not an intimate spot. Our table was a little awkward 2 top where a lot of the staff walked by but was also nice if we needed anything they were right there. Our waiter, the host, and everybody were quick and friendly. Definitely liked the staff here. Not overbearing or checking all the time which is nice. For our food we ordered: - Crispy Duck (3/10) - Shaking Chicken (7/10) - Dry Beef Hor-Fun (7/10) - Squid Ink Fried Rice (10/10) - Lava toast (7/10) The crispy duck came out and was their take similar to what a lot of places have for their duck bao. The duck being fried ended up being really well done and kind of dry. I'd compare it to a Chinese buffet's fried chicken. It was ok, but I'd try something else next time. The shaking chicken was a nice chicken and rice option. Good flavors and pretty standard fare. The dry beef hor-fun was a good beef and rice noodle dish. Again a good flavors and pretty standard. Nothing special but nothing wrong with it either. I did really enjoy the veggies with this one as they just seemed to carry the flavors of the dish really well. The absolute star though, the reason to come in my opinion, was the squid ink fried rice! I've had squid ink paella at BCN, MAD, and in the Mediterranean. This was better than all of those. Just so good. Will come back for this one and highly recommend. We finished off with the Lava toast. A molten buttery sweet French toast with custard at the center was very yummy. The custard was just a bit grainy as a texture but otherwise very nice. Just the right amount of sweet. Nice end to a good dinner. All in all of definitely recommend giving Mein a go. Overall a good place to go for a fun dinner. Highly recommend the squid ink rice it was smooth and had the right hint of umami from the squid and chinese sausage. We also got the shaken chicken and dry beef noodles which were good but nothing exceptional. The lava bread is a mix of french toast with egg custard inside which is good to try once. Don't get the crispy duck appetizer, the duck was really dry and hard to eat. Service was great about refilling waters. The restaurant can be pretty loud inside and they seated us in a table that was in the middle of the room which felt like we were in everyone's way. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants for big groups. Ample seating, big food portions, and good service. I had the twin wok, salt and pepper squid, firecracker chicken, and char kuey kak. All the dishes were so tasty, and good. The twin wok dish was a good mix of thin noodles and flat noodles. Best of both worlds in a dish. The salt and pepper squid was crispy, salty, and little peppery. The firecracker chicken wasn't spicy despite the dried chilies on the plate. The char kuey kak had to be eaten with the chili sauce provided for the perfect taste. I would come back here again and again and again. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Mein!! We've been here a few times and have been pleasantly surprised by the food and service each time. Special shoutout to the manager, Victor who made our most recent experience amazing. He's gotten multiple positive reviews on yelp already. He went above and beyond to make our visit wonderful. We arrived for a late dinner on a Friday evening. We were initially seated on a bar table due to lack of seating, but we were happy that they let us move to a table (with chairs with some back support) after ordering food. Once we mentioned we were vegetarian, they pointed out that most items can be modified to made vegetarian by replacing meat with tofu. Victor mentioned that some noodle dishes may not taste the same if modified to be tofu dishes and some cost additional to make modifications. Our favorite dishes are the shaken tofu (comes in a delicious sauce), garlic eggplant, and lava toast for dessert. We were feeling adventurous and tried the shrimp hor-fun as a tofu dish for an additional $5. We were not fans of this one as the sauce was bland/lacked overall flavor in comparison to other items we have tried. Overall Chinatown restaurants are not usually vegetarian friendly and I am happy this restaurant is willing to make modifications to add variety to the options offered for vegetarian/vegans. read more

What a disappointment! Used to be such a dependable hot spot. Stoped in for lunch today. Pan fried dumplings were not edible, mushy oils soaked. The braised duck looked nothing like the menu picture, just chunks of random duck pieces. Garlic eggplant was very good but didn't offset the flat noodle dish that came with no sauce and was for the most part tasteless. Very pleasantly surprised by the experience I had here for lunch! It gets busy around noon so coming a little before that is better. The vibe here is different from other places in Chinatown. The decor is more modern and people are usually communicating in English rather than Chinese. Menu is pretty extensive, mostly with Cantonese dishes, and everything I tried was really good. Tried the Yakult Yuzu, which was like a Yakult slushy, super refreshing and they crushed the ice right when I ordered. Red bean slushy was also tasty, full of coconut milk and different jellies. The oil chicken (葱油鸡) was savory without being too salty and the chicken was so flavorful. Very authentic! Flat beef noodles (干炒牛河) was excellent, the noodles are bouncy and the beef they use isn't the usual cheap cut, it was higher quality and very flavorful. Clams in black bean sauce were on the specials menu- decent portion size and full of black bean flavor. Salt and pepper squid was like elevated calamari. The pieces of squid were big and every piece was full of umami flavor. Wait staff is very attentive, they clear out trash and dirty dishes quickly and you don't have to wait too long for food. It was still busy but luckily not a line to wait in yet. Looks to be small family owner restaurant. Food variety is good. Lots to select from. Good Garlic Eggplant - very flavorful, could have been eaten with some rice but over all yummy! Really wanted to like this place based on what I've heard about it. We came with a large group before Christmas and actually got seated quickly. It's located in a small plaza on corporate and parking was slightly tough due to the limited parking spaces. The interior is pretty spacious and clean. The restroom situation is a bit interesting; there is exactly one male and female toilet so there was always a line of people waiting awkwardly. The only thing about waiting for the restroom was to take your time to read Allison Cook's review and praise of the food here... The group at our table ordered quite a few dishes and here are the ones I remembered. The service started out great and then we constantly had to flag down servers to help us refill rice/ drinks as the restaurant filled up. Food great! I was able to find Char Kueh Kak a very Malaysian dish. Taste wise on point albeit a little sweet and oily. I'm guessing they are using the Malaysian dark soy sauce- that will explain the sweet flavor of the dish. Pan fried well and full of wok hei. Would love if they can reduce the sweetness and oil. Portion is noticeably smaller than the bf's beef flat rice noodle. The beef flat rice noodle was equally good. The bf said it's great but he too complained the dish is a little oily. The appetizer of fried dumplings with chilli oil is forgettable. Will pass on that dish next time. Substitution is not welcome. I asked if they can take out the meat in one dish and sub it with tofu instead. My server responded with a YES but there is an up charge of $5 to add tofu to the dish :( so tofu is more expensive than beef ???? Aside from that snafu, service was great. Our server was attentive. Many others help out and keep refilling our iced tea and soda. The place is nice and clean. The AC was amazingly cold despite the 96F heat outside. Fancy looking Cantonese restaurant with great decor. I'm used to more hole in the wall places because most nicer looking canto places are banquet hall type but very cute for a date night in Chinatown. We got some takeout so didn't get to eat things at peak freshness but still very good. The beef flat noodle is exceptional - perfectly qq rice noodles lightly seasoned and silky beef. One of the better renditions of the dish in terms of pure noodles bliss. The egg tofu dish is also very tasty, albeit a bit expensive for 6 coins of tofu. Peking pork ribs are also really good here, would definitely recommend. All in all, it's a bit diff from the rest of Chinatown but definitely worth a stop. read more

Then I went as told that the $90 worth of food we ordered wasn't enough to get 4 bowls of rice for 5 people. Wow just excellent. This is great excellent delicious chinese food in Houston Chinatown and compares so highly to even other Chinatowns of America. The Char Siu is fantastic. The xiao long bao is very porky and soupy, not too salty, just the right classic taste. Beef and bitter melon came out with tender beef and delicious bitter melon thinly sliced. Food: best Chinese food in town. Start with delicious fried wonton, crab soup and juicy xiao long bao. Continuing with very tasty fresh lobster ($55 for 2 lobsters - about 3.5 lbs). Then get stuffy with very tasty XO fried rice. My kid love the fried rice so much. We also enjoy the jalapeño prawn and stir eggplant with white rice. The service was great! There wait staff was frequently walking around the room removing any empty plates, refilling drinks, and offered to pack up any leftover food in to go boxes. The food was ok compared to other restaurants in the area. It was not terrible but not spectacular either. The food came out quickly and was hot. From the outside looking in, the restaurant lighting looked warm and inviting. When you walk inside it's surprising how bright it is. I would've liked the lights to be more dim. This was a pleasant surprise. What a new feel for what I'm used to seeing on Bellaire. The quality of the food was great and a decent price for the size of our group for a late Saturday dinner. They were friendly and hospitable even for when it was just take-out food. If you're waiting to get a table or waiting for your order, there are some fun places adjacent that you can visit - like a karaoke bar, a pastry shop, a korean restaurant and a boba shop. It's a fun hidden corner that I never knew about but the quality of the food hit the spot that night. The family was pleased and we were surprised when we picked it all up to bring home. Very close to Korean version of Jajangmyeon. It even came with a side of pickled radish and onions with black sauce(if you know, you know). I appreciated the noodles, it was perfectly cooked, not too starch or yellow..o I am not a big fan of yellow noodles... Jajangmyeon sauce was good, smoky, not too salty with big chunks of onions. I love onions so I didn't mind but if you are not a fan of onions, you might not like that. I personally thought diced pork chunks were too big and some of the pieces tasted too much of pork when took a bite. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. My favorite comfort food place! This place literally has so many options of Chinese and Asian fusion, and every time I try a new dish, it easily becomes my new favorite! My bf and I started off with the Banh Bot Chien that we always order when we come here. It's a nice change to the usual presentation of banh bot chien, and it's so flavorful and delicious dipped in their sriracha sauce. One of my absolute favorites and essentials to order is the Shrimp Pineapple Fried Rice. I love anything shrimp and pineapple-related so this Thai-inspired fried rice really resonates with me. It's full of flavor and I really can't recommend this enough LOL. We also had their Red Oil Dumplings, which is super crispy and delicious as a shareable appetizer! My bf also picked out the Firecracker Chicken, which was such a hit for us. The chicken is juicy and flavorful with dried chili and onions. I was feeling adventurous with my drink option and decided to try the Yakult Yuzu! It comes with Yakult, yuzu, fresh lime, and ice. The most amazing Chinese food I've ever eaten. First time eating at Mein and we had no idea of what to order. Our waitress, Angelina, recommended a few dishes that sounded amazing. The Red Oil Dumplings for appetizer , main dishes Dry Beef Hor-fun, firecracker chicken, shaking beef, XO Sauce fried rice and a Thai tea. Our plates were left completely empty and our bellies full.
