I have been coming to Mei's for many years. She is skilled at what she does. I am always pleased with her alterations. Her turn around time is reasonable and her prices are more affordable than another tailor I have used. In addition to tailoring casual clothes she also specializes in bridal alterations. In addition, she also sells bridal gowns and formal dresses, and dress shoes. There is street parking in front although limited. I can't parallel to save my life, so there has to be a lot of space. Sometimes I'll park in the residential neighborhood around the corner or in the shopping center in front of her shop. I will always choose Mei to tailor my clothes unless I'm in a pinch as I live in Howard County and may not have time when I am in Montgomery County where I work. I was looking for a qipao for my tea ceremony and didn't have much luck with the stores in Chinatown, NYC. Compared to those stores, Mei's was a much warmer experience and she was patient and flexible. She had a variety of samples I could try on and I was able to make customizations to the collar, sleeves and buttons! Since I came before new years, she was able to get me my dream dress straight from Hong Kong with all my changes without additional shipping charges! She also did not charge for altering the dress. Mei's is wonderful! Mei, the owner, has an assortment of sample size Mora Lee wedding dresses (up to 60% off!), bridesmaids dresses/evening gowns, and a lot of Chinese qipaos/cheongsams. I came in for an alteration for my mom's more casual qipao for an engagement photoshoot and the pricing was very reasonable ($50 for hemming, $35 for taking in the zipper part on the back). I also ended up purchasing a more traditional qipao as she had a few limited assortment. The pricing on the qipaos were also reasonable (around $300) and she says that I only need to get it altered a week before my event, and can always exchange for another qipao if I'd like. I brought my bridesmaids dress for my cousins wedding in to get a hem on May 26th and was given a date of June 7th to pick it up. This was fine timing because the wedding wasn't until July 7th. I went to pick it up on June 14th because I was out of town for work and tried on the dress to make sure the hem was right. Hem looked to be how I wanted it, however there was a small stain at the front of the dress near the legs. I brought the dress new with tags to get the hem and explained that this stain was not from me. However, I was told that it must've been from me and I didn't see it because the dress was wrinkled before she steamed it. It was not wrinkled to the point where you couldn't see a stain. The person working there would not work with me on how to get the stain out, dry cleaner recommendations, nothing. I then took it to my reputable dry cleaner (Apple Cleaners in Gaithersburg) for them to try to get the stain out and had to pay $25. There was no compensation, apology, or remorse about the situation I was in from Mei's alterations. I am going to be in pictures and standing up at my cousins wedding and wanted to make sure I looked as she intended the dress to look. I will not be returning to Mei's due to their rude, accusatory, and remorseless behavior toward a really special time in my family's lives. read more

They even offered suggestions without pressure when I wasn't sure of the length and other details. My wife got her long Chinese dress for our wedding banquet, and we were both very happy with the dress and the service. There were only about 10-20 dresses on the rack, which was good so we weren't overwhelmed with options. Alterations were included in the dress price. Mei did the alterations for my July 2013 wedding and I highly recommend her to any bride who wants to have a worry-free alteration process. I had two dresses, one white gown and one traditional Chinese Qipao that had to be altered. The white dress was a beautiful one shouldered La Sposa organza dress that I purchased as is (which was a size 8 and I'm a size 2 petite). Mei did an amazing job with taking the dress in and making it shorter, and into a strapless gown instead of 1-shouldered. Her work was impeccable and it fit me like a glove; I could never tell that the dress was altered. The Chinese dress was custom made in Beijing, about 1.5 year before the wedding and of course I lost weight so it had to get taken in as well. There wasn't a whole lotta material to work with, and silk doesn't hide any mistakes, but of course Mei was able fix the dress and fit every curve on my body, like the dress is suppose to. I would never recommend this alterations location to anyone. There are three main reasons why and they will be listed below. 1. They do not consult you with what you want for alterations. The seamstress started pinning the hemm of my dress and only explained why after she spent 20 minutes pinning my dress. I was surprised with the cost at the end of the appointment. 2. After I got my dress back it didn't fit properly and they changed the look of the dress. The dress covered my bust completely and was loose in different areas. 3. After I took the dress home I looked at the tulle hemm line and they butchered my dress. The hemm line was originally even and now there are areas that are completely uneven. There are a couple zigzag cuts. I started crying when I saw this. I tried on my dress and tried so hard not to cry. I now want to buy an entirely new wedding dress before my wedding. I loved my dress prior to the alterations. I am so upset and am sad that of all the details I have to take care of my dress is now something I am completely unhappy with 15 days before my wedding. They charged me 320 dollars and ruined my dress. Please BRIDES BEWARE!!! read more

I didn't buy my wedding dress from here, but used Mei's for my alterations. There is a little bit of a language barrier, but she was so friendly and took the time to explain everything. She pinned up the bust area, taking into consideration the "tightness" I wanted the dress. She also showed me what an over bustle and under bustle would look like through pins. She provided her opinion on what she thought would look good, without being pushy. I honestly did not like either of the bustles when I tried the dress on in the store, but looking back at my pictures, Mei had recommended an under bustle for my dress, and it looks great in the pictures! Looking at the dress, you can tell that she is a quality seamstress. She even steamed my dress and veil before my wedding day (I didn't buy my veil from there either). I spent much less than I was expecting on alterations too. My sister also got her bridesmaids dress altered here and had a great experience. I was looking for a Chinese qipao for my June wedding and came upon Mei's on Yelp. I was surprised at how open, classy and clean their shop was for a Chinese owned shop. They had a lot of different type of qipao for the bride and qipao for mothers too. Their alternation discount for when you buy their dresses is pretty kind too. they also sell wedding dresses and it's custom made from NYC. I am still shopping around for my wedding dress but am leaning towards buying a dress I found there. Their prices are reasonable and afforable. I recommend those buying a qipao to try it on before buying it. The fit for each dress is just so different. It also helps we spoke Chinese with each other. Among many things a bride has to plan for her wedding, one of the most important things is to ensure that her wedding gown & bridal party dresses are the right fit, color, etc. With that in mind, maintaining good time management by a vendor is also critical. The bridal party's dresses came out great, HOWEVER, it seemed as though they did not rise to the occasion when it came time to make alterations to the bride's wedding dresses. To provide further insight, here's a description of our experience: The dress fitting before our last & final fitting, we made an appointment weeks in advance for 3PM. We waited for about an hour - and of course, we realize there are unforeseen circumstances but this was so inconvenient to the bride and bridal party! If that wasn't bad enough, we felt rushed during our time and that may have contributed to the oversight on her dress. The specific alterations needed were not particularly fulfilled, even with ample time given to do so. As the wedding day is a couple days away from today, the follow up on Mei's Bridal has been less than stellar as the bride experienced many failed attempts upon calling the shop and was told that they were "very busy". Imagine having your wedding day only a couple days away and not knowing the state of your wedding dress?!?! It's safe to say that every bride wants her dress to be 100% satisfactory and done according to her specifications - this was not the case! In the future, we now know to take our business elsewhere and to a company that can handle requests well and timely. read more

I chose Mei's Bridal because even though they weren't many reviews it was the type of review the suited my needs. My appointment was lovely, the boutique is very relaxed, private and comfortable. Mei quoted my at very reasonable prices and pinned me up so I can see what all needs to be done to my wedding dress. She showed me what a bustle looks like and pinned the length I wanted with my dress and shoes on. I was very excited leaving the boutique. I strongly urgent anyone NOT to come here for wedding dress alterations. I got my dress from BLHN, roughly $1,300 dollars. I was between sizes so I was advised to order up and have it altered down -- it needed to be hemmed and tightened around the waist. Mei hemmed it once and I explained it was too short, that I was wearing flats and that I wanted the skirt to cover my feet. I was very clear in what I wanted. After the first fitting, I came in for the second fitting. Mei was rude and unprofessional, she was resistant to me trying on the dress again and wanted me to simply take it home. I tried it on in the store and was devastated to see that it was 2 inches too short and she cut the fabric so no hem could be let out. The bustle she made was uneven and ugly - the weirdest circle of buttons and bulky folds in the back. We took the altered dress to a second seamstress and she was appalled at how badly it was altered. she explained that the bustle for this type of dress is never made like Mei did. she also explained it was unfixable since Mei cut the fabric with no extra fabric under the hem. Mei ruined my wedding dress, losing my mother $1,500. she was incredibly rude and unkind, accusing us of trying to cheat her when she was the one who made the mistake. do not trust her with your wedding dress or any clothes that you care about. her work is sloppy and her way of conducting business deeply dishonest. I now have to look for another dress with only 2 months left before my wedding. this woman has terrible customer service skills, was incredibly unkind to my mother and me and cannot be trusted with bridal alterations. read more

Mei's was the only place I found in the DC area that had Chinese wedding dresses. I brought my western dress to Mei's to get altered as well. I found her a little pricey on both the new dress purchase and the alterations (though buying a Chinese wedding dress from her at least includes the alterations) but she did a fine job. Mei and her assistant were very sweet helping me try on dresses. Mei also kindly offered to number my bustle fastenings even though she didn't have to alter them. Although I did not purchase my dress at Mei's, I came to her for my bridal gown alterations. She honored our appointments and was pleasant during my fitting. As a prepared bride-to-be, I came with the undergarments and shoes that I would wear on the big day. When I came back several weeks later, after alterations, to try the dress on, she had cut the dress way too short. I was very upset by this since I had done everything, on my end, that I was supposed to do. Instead of the special heels I had purchased, I ended up have to wear flats for my wedding. When we asked her about this, she would not lengthen the dress or admit to any mistake. The other parts of the alteration fit nicely (which is why she gets a 3 instead of a 2). I came to Mei's for bridal gown alterations. I bought my dress online and it was too long (as I expected it would be). After looking on yelp for a reliable and reasonably priced wedding dress tailor, I found Mei's. All of her reviews instilled confidence in her skills. I am SO HAPPY that I brought my dress here! The process was easy, she double checked what I wanted (only a short train since my wedding would be outside), and the outcome was beautiful. The dress fit like a glove the alterations were beautiful, and I got so many compliments on it all night! Specifically, since I had the bottom hem taken up I want to specify that the length was absolutely perfect, just brushing the floor in the front with the small train suitable for an outdoor wedding that I wanted. Mei and all of her staff are very sweet and helpful and the turnaround time for alterations was a quick 2-3 short weeks. My dress came steamed and the staff also offered to steam a couple of days before the wedding for free if I wanted them to. I ended up not bringing it back for the extra steaming since I own a steamer myself, but I thought this was a nice touch and definitely appreciated. The price was very reasonable and I think a great value, very fairly priced (even on my grad student budget). I would definitely recommend Mei's Bridal to other brides and/or bridesmaids who need alterations, in fact I already have in person to some friends also getting married in the area.
